Is there a way to get cheaper Internet access than T-Mobile USA's "Total Internet" at $29.99 per month? For example, I do not need their HotSpots, but they say I cannot remove it without removing the rest of the data plan. Any ideas?

I did a little shopping around. And it appears that the T-mobile Total Internet is the cheapest unlimited plan. The $30 internet is the reason why im moving from Cingular to T-Mobile. If i kept my existing voice plan with Cingular and added their unlimited internet id be paying $110/mo. I can get t-mobile voice with unlimited internet for $70/mo and have 300 more anytime minutes than with Cingular. There may be better deals out there or promotional packages but this was the absolute best ive found so far.

Aaahhh, the times when we could pay $6.99 for blackberry plan... OK, I guess I'll give up. Thanks, Shane.

you can log into u're t-mo account change u're phone to a blackberry and switch to the unlimited blackberry add-on $20 and switch u're phone back to the MDA. TADA.....you have unlimited internet for $10 cheaper.

I switched to that, and now I cannot send or receive emails (I use push email if that matters), and cannot browse (with Opera or with IE).

When I click Start - Settings - Connections - Connections - Manage Existing Connections, under there I have "wap.voicestream.com" for "Access point name". Do I need to change that to something else to get T-Mobile Web to work for me?

with tmobileWEB $5.99 you can only use the web browser because tmobile blocks all the ports but 8080 (if you have the proxies) which is used for http. If you want to use email and other apps then you need to go to your account @ tmobile.com and change your current phone for a blackberry, go to plans and services and select the $20.00 add-on internet and your done.

yes, the reason you dont get internet is because you havent setup the proxies. if you just want to use the internet then under connections click on manage existing.. and click on the proxies tab and check the box where it says this connection uses proxies (i think thats what it says) and input this in the space provided under it 216.155.165.50 and go to advance and make sure http is set to 216.155.165.50 :8080

I switched to the $20 Blackberry Internet add-on, and everything seems to work fine now. I just need to see if the bill will be for the $20, and I am all set.

Thanks a bunch, Andyjs.

right now i have total internet so either one is an improvement... so i'll try the tmobile web ($5.99, with correct proxy settings, i assume it allows for unlimited data usage) but is it the same "EDGE" speed as the blackberry add-on for $20?

Here's a thread on HoFo about this:

I found these directions via another post.
I have the 5.99 plan...I used this for a few mintues of internet browsing and yahoo messaging...gonna wait for my bill to see what kind of charges I may or may not have accrued.

1. Open up your keyboard and get out your stylus because it will make it easier
2. Start menu --> Settings
3. Go to 'Connections' tab
4. Then click on Connections app
5. Select 'Set up my proxy server'
6. Select the 'General' tab
7. On the general tab, name it "WAP" (or anything, really, that's just what I used) -- if you haven't messed with this before, it will say "My Work Network"
8. Select the 'Modem' tab
9. Click on New...
10. Name the connection "Tzones" (again, that's what I used)
11. Under modem, select 'Cellular Line (GPRS)'
12. Click Next
13. Under access point name, type "wap.voicestream.com"
14. Click Next
15. Leave "User name", "Password", and "Domain" blank (not a space, but blank)
16. Click on Advanced...
17. On the 'TCP/IP' tab, ensure "Use server-assigned IP address" is checked and that nothing else is checked or filled-in
18. On the 'Servers' tab, ensure "Use server-assigned addresses" is checked and that nothing else is checked or filled-in
19. Click "ok" in the top right corner (or press the OK button next to your space bar)
20. Click Finish
21. Select the 'VPN' tab and make sure there is nothing here
22. Select the 'Proxy Settings' tab
23. Check the box "This network connects to the Internet"
24. Then you can check the box that says "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet"
25. Then type into the Proxy server box: 216.155.165.50:8080
26. Click on Advanced...
27. Click on "HTTP"
28. The server should read 216.155.165.50
29. Change the port number to 8080
30. Leave "User name", "Password", and "Domain" blank (not a space, but blank)
31. Click "ok" in the top right corner (or press the OK button next to your space bar)
32. And do the "ok" thing again
33. And "ok" one more time
34. Notice 1: at the top of the screen, it should say "WAP" (or whatever name you chose in step 7)
35. Notice 2: where before it said 'Set up my proxy server' now it should read 'Edit my proxy server' -- just FYI, don't touch
36. Click on the 'Advanced' tab
37. Click on "Select Networks"
38. Under both drop-down boxes, choose "WAP" (or the name you chose in step 7) -- I'm not sure the 2nd one needs to be the same, but what the heck, it worked for me; feel free to experiment
39. Click "ok" in the top right corner (or press the OK button next to your space bar)
40. And do the "ok" thing again
41. Push the "e" on your MDA to launch Internet Explorer
42. Make sure you're not connected via the USB cable
43. Go to "Favorites" and choose one of the sites listed there and see if it works
44. If it works, congratulations! Stop here.
45. If it doesn't work, go back to step 1 or ask for help (but I'm no expert, so I think I'll leave it to others to help you)

Until i see the bill i can not confirm, but due to the fact they are wide open and you should be able to have data with out paying for it. I am basing this on the fact that like most companies their parameters are set from what is set up. hense the ability to simply tell them you have a black berry and your charge changes. The system does not set up your phohe it is simply a billing and database mule. With that being said i believe that if you have no data set up on your plan and you get the right proxy you can have full blown internet. I have a phone running full t mobile data but i have no data account. Have not seen the bill yet. My interests are not in the free data it's the voip over the gprs through the satellite.

Again we will see.

i currently am paying the $30 for the internet plan.. and i hate that i have to pay for a hotspot plan that i NEVER use.. does anyone know if theres anything we can do so that t-mobile seperates the internet plan from the hotspot plan.. like maybe a petition or something???

I called about the Hot Spot as well, it is a complete waste of money.

The only reason I have the $30 plan is because I use the browser all the time. Other than that, I don't use email, nor the hot spot. Would the 5.99 plan work for this? Has anyone seen extra charges?

Wow, I followed the 45 step program, and I'm able to browse and update weather and all that good stuff, and I don't even have a basic ($5.99) TZones account. Nowwww, we'll see what's on my next bill.

that 45 step program is detailed instructions on how to enter the information for GPRS on t-mobile USA. you will get charged whatever your data plan is for it's use. if you don't have a data plan, i think you get charged per kb used...

that's what im on. the 19.99 plan. Seems I could do better but so far I got no complaints.

I would like to make sure they aren't sneaking hidden charges in. I cabt say I inderstand the difference between the GPRS CONNECTION and the EDGE connection. guess the first bill should enlighten me.

My Internet is not working after doing these 45 steps. I can get and send emails, but no browsing in Opera. SPB Weather does not update either. Below are some details. Does anyone have an idea what I need to fix? I am on the $5.99 T-Mobile USA plan.

>> 25. Then type into the Proxy server box: 216.155.165.50:8080
I do this, but the port number is not saved for some reason - I go back, and it is not there. However, under "Advanced... - HTTP, the server does read "216.155.165.50", and the port does say "8080".

>> 35. Notice 2: where before it said 'Set up my proxy server' now it should read 'Edit my proxy server'

On my MDA it still says "Set up".

Thanks in advance for any help.
