View Full Version : New Dialpad Skins... [UPDATED 6/20/2008]

7th July 2007, 12:30 AM
I downloaded and installed the HTC Touch dialpad, and it worked well but was pretty plain.

I've spent a few hours reworking the graphics it uses and came up with a new skin based on a wallpaper I downloaded from www.pocketpcscreens.com. I've got portrait working well, but haven't done landscape yet...

Here are a couple screenshots. If anyone would like to use it, let me know and I can post links here.

And SmartDial still works!!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/neonstorm7/Dialer_BkgdP-4.png

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/neonstorm7/Dialer_BkgdP-5.png

To install it, you'll need to install the HTC Touch dialpad (Wizard_reTOUCHed_Dialer2.zip), then download the background zip of your choice. Copy all of the image files from the zip into your device's Windows dir, and overwrite any files it prompts about. Soft reset your phone (or stop cprog.exe then reopen the phone) and enjoy!

This has been tested on my T-Mobile Wing w/ WM6. I haven't tested it on any prior versions of WM or other devices, so maybe someone can chime in whether it's OK or not.

If anyone wants the raw png's to make your own, let me know and I can attach them too...

I also attached a corresponding 'Rocks' WM theme and images for ContactsManager and Slide2Unlock for a nice uniform look.

I'm not too sure about the technical aspects of the dialer... You may want to check the thread where the dialpad was released. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311225&highlight=retouched) This is just a graphical update I did for it...

Enjoy,
Ryan

Update - here are a few other's I've come up with recently:

Blue Drops (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1744365&postcount=134)

And really, what could be so special about the number nineteen? Mystery Number, indeed.

Hmm. Seems there is a problem with a couple of files. I'll upload a corrected version ASAP.

Sorry!

Uploaded wallpapers and misc images for Slide2Unlock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314703&highlight=slide2unlock) and ContactManager (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314048&highlight=contactmanager) in post #1.

No screenshot for Slide2Unlock because, well, the device is locked. :) It's the same wallpaper but not as dark, so it looks nice and vibrant.

Is it possible to get a video call button at the dialpad?

Thanks for the compliment! Unfortunately, at my current "skill" level, no. :( (notice the 'airquotes' around skill.)

I'm not really up on actual programming, this is simply a graphic overhaul of an existing skin.

If anyone out there can help me modify the actual layout, please feel free to chime in!!

Sorry!

@Dax:

I got the email notification of your post, then checked the thread and saw your reason for retracting it. :)

Just for curiosity, is there something I can spell out better in the (admittedly vague) instructions? I know they probably skip a lot of 'read between the lines' steps, so if there's something that'll make it clearer please let me know!

Is it working OK for you? I don't think I've gotten any feedback yet that anyone else has it working, and I'm curious to know if it does.

Your post did help, because I noticed that the landscape theme background doesn't quite match the landscape dialer background. I've worked hard to keep them all uniform and avoid the wallpaper jumping up and down when you switch screens... :(

That's it. I must be officially dumb; I cannot find any information anywhere about how to apply a separate skin to the Touch dialer.

I was already using the PhoneBoost Lite (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=305707&highlight=phoneboost) with the Eten skin. Is this the same thing as the reTouched dialer you linked? (Again, I can't find any information linking the two)

Thanks,
Dax.

neonstorm
11th July 2007, 06:28 PM
Nah, don't feel dumb. No problem at all. They're not related - I got the Touch dialpad from here. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311225&highlight=useful+touch+files) I got it simply to get rid of the horrendous T-Mobile dialpad. After I installed it, I wasn't overly impressed by the looks of this one either, and realized that all of the graphic elements were simply .png's in the Windows directory. I used the old dialpad as a reference for size and layout and created a whole new set of graphics to use instead of the default Touch ones. There's no coding or software manipulation at all on my end, it's all strictly graphical.

Hope it helps,

Ryan

hey, just a quick question, what kinda smart dial is there in the touch dialer...is it the one from microsoft that is inbuilt in wm6 or is it the one from HTC...I personally liked the htc one better as it it showed me the number of the contact without having to press a key on the contact...

neonstorm,

Thanks a lot for such a nice dialer! I'm really digging it :D.

Now, even though I like the grey theme, I'd like to use it with a different background, but no matter which one I pick, the dialer always shows the "Rocks" one on it. Is there a way to keep and use your dialer and its nice transparency with any other background pic?

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

If you post a portrait and landscape wallpaper (240x320 and 320x240) I should be able to do it. I've designed the graphics to make it pretty easy to replace the wallpaper and keep the transparency...

Or are you referring to the default Touch background I showed?

I would like to use it with more than one background, so what I'm looking for is something like a nice "standard" (plain-ish, but nice) background for the dialer, say, in a dark color or something, still keeping the nice transparencies.

Maybe I'm being too picky... but since you have the "skill" (and yes, you do!), I'm sure you can come with a couple of ideas :D.

I really like the last few that you have added. I have an 8525 on HTC rom and have a video button I have no use for. I was wondering if you can direct me to the exact link I need so I can download your dialers and put it into my phone? I'm a newbie so if you can put the directions a little more clearly it would be great.. Thanks so much and great work..- Bryan

I'd like to use the one on the far right of the three you posted with the dimpled wall image or grill thing, Kinda looks like a golf ball close up but its pretty classy and the blue one of the pairs you posted, the grey looks nice as well but the blue just pops out more...

Check posts #1 and #2. I've changed the way this works a little. There's one default set of button images, and then you download the background of your choice.

I also added the 'Blue' dialer and theme and the 'Holes' dialer and theme. BTW, the 'Holes' image is actually a closeup of a phone handset.

I should be able to get the grey one out soon...

Here is a black dialpad skin... It's a little different from the first one I posted because I got a cleaner result with this one.

I also attached the raw png's if anyone wants to try their hand at it. To do this you'll need an editor capable of handling layered png's. I use Adobe Fireworks. Basic apps like MS Paint will not work... All you need to do is insert your background at the lowest level (i.e. behind the other elements). You can also change the font face/size/color. Remember: save them as a 'flattened png' which will greatly reduce the file size. This not only saves memory, but if you don't the phone app will be very sluggish.

If anyone comes up with something, please post here for us to see!

@greg3d:

I'm not sure, but I assume at the worst you could just uninstall the dialpad and delete the images from \Windows. I have heard of problems with other dialers that cause the loss of SmartDial, but not so far with this one.

I don't know if it's just depth perception but something seems to be missing on the touch screens...take for example this zphone skin (which won't work for us folks)..the text is sharper and looks engraved...I'm no graphics artist so haven't a clue what terminology to use....

Another Dialer I used to use was the JPL4 Vista Black but it doesn't support smartdial...I enclosed a screenshot too for comparison.

I use linux so maybe I can play with gimp and see if I can steal elements from these for ours.

Ryan, Would it be possible to steal the buttons and History from the vista black to use on one of ours?

Thank you Ryan! Question..is there something special you have to do to use a pic for a background because when I try to use the black raindrops one as the background of my main page it shows up as light gray...like it has an overlay...it's not dark black like the picture but other themes show up fine as dark black. I ask because you had matching themes for several of yours. ( I would like to know what I did wrong AND I'm kinda hoping you'll include a matching theme. :P )

Also thinking out of the box..for those who have their sounds turned off is there a way to indicate button push? I know on the eten dialer the edge of the button flashes red...on another the button would go from black to a light gray when pressed. I also noticed you didn't emboss the history and arrow...did they give you problems?

I'm gonna open these up in Gimp (linux graphics editor similar to photoshop) and see what I can do...I am not an artist. ;)

How about something like this..I know this is not lined up correctly but it gives the basic idea...I did not have a flatten option and the png was to big to upload to xda.

neonstorm
26th July 2007, 05:48 AM
Hmmm... I got so wrapped up in the inlaid emboss on the letters/numbers I forgot about the call log/BS buttons. I'll fix them too...

As for the 'pressed button' feedback' that's actually my next plan... you read my mind. I'm toying with a few ideas:

1 different color button
2 different color font
3 border or highlight

I'll try them all and see how it looks... Bear with me a little longer, I think this will be cool. ;)

As for this the Today image not displaying correctly, I have them same problem using an image as the background. You have to actually make a theme with the image. I use a pretty good freeware called ThemeGen CE. I'm definitely going to cook one up for the 'black drops' too...

@famewolf, neonstorm, I can answer the question of today pic not displaying correctly..Basically when you select a today image thru today settings page, WM automatically sets the transparency settings. Instead go to pictures and videos and select the image from there and choose set as today background fromthe soft key menu. Then you are also provided with a transparency option where u can set it to whatever u want..

Is the default dialpad the same as the image I posted earlier on this thread? If so I guess it would... Just keep in mind that this overwrites the files. You may want to back up the original images first just in case...

By the way, I've gone back and removed all the old versions. See post #1 for the new downloads!!

Thanks for the tip! I'll try it out... Always wondered why that didn't work.

Hey neonstorm, do you mind posting a psd (if you can) of the layered template for these skins? I'd like to do a few (and possibly help you out if there are more than you can handle.)

Here they are. I just ask one favor in return for all my hard work...

Let us see what you come up with!! ;) I included the .png's I've been using, and saved them as .psd's. I don't use Photoshop so hopefully they work...

It should be relatively easy - just drop an image in for the wallpaper, send it to the back of the pile, and flatten it. You can then keep the plain 'window' image (indialer) or copy it from your flattened image to give it a transparent effect as well.

Lemme know if you have questions!

ANy way to convert these .zip's to cab files? We know we want them installed to \windows. I'm using Settings Savior to help restore my settings when installing a new rom..I already have it auto installing the dialer but currently have no way to auto install the theme on top of it.

Sorry to be a pain and resurrect an old thread!

I downloaded the blackdrops dialskin and think it's lush!

I don't suppose you have the image file to use a today theme that I can pinch?

Many thanks for a lush dial skin!!

EDIT - Apologies for this - just find the image and the rest of the detail in the post - thank you all and sorry to ask a dumb question!!

I use this theme..plus this wallpaper (go through pictures and video in start, programs and click on wallpaper and choose set to today background so you can set the transparency to 0 because it defaults to 65% which makes whole screen look grey)

Hi folks,
i've made a few changes on the first skin of hma4.
But now i see that there is a much better way to skinn the dialpad.
Anyway i changed all pictures for port and land.

Nice background! My goal with the total redesign was to get rid of the square button layout and come up with something more pleasing to the eye (to my eye at least) :) So I set out to redraw the whole dialpad using the same general layout as the default.

As it stands, it's actually very easy to insert your own background. All you need is an editor capable of handling layered images, like Photoshop or Fireworks (which I personally use).

The buttons are already laid out and set for transparency in the background image. You slide the background behind them, save it, and copy it to your device. The individual 'up' button images are completely transparent so there's no need to change them. The 'pressed' button images are solid and highlighted so they work with any background also.

Couldn't be much easier!

If anyone has any backgrounds they'd like, my offer stands: post them here and I'll make a dialer out of it! Famewolf posted a nice one that turned out very well!

Well first step would be telling him WHAT zip you used..where you got it from...attaching it to your email so he can check it...trying ANOTHER zip like the black raindrop one he posted for me...you do know you have to soft reboot for the change to show up yes?

Don't make Ryan do all the work in helping you solve your issue. Early skins had seperated background and button zips...later ones had all of it in one zip. Did you install an integrated one or unzip two zips? Did you reboot after you unzipped them?

Yes, as famewolf mentioned please let me know which of the dialers you installed.

If you aren't using the current ones that I updated last week, please take the new image file and copy it to your device.

Then let me know how it goes, and specifically which - if any - button(s) still aren't working. I'll do my best to help you solve it!

@famewolf,

I've been fiddling with a .cab editor and I think I have the solution worked out. Should be much simpler. I've also got a landscape version of the dialpad nearly finished. (Not that anyone really uses it... do they??)

Some folks set their entrie phone to landscape..even going so far as to have a theme landscape based with the buttons setup to work that way so go figure. ;) If you get a simple process for building a cab could you draw up something explaining it? I have some registry entries and I'm told I can build them into a cab to make installation easier but when I searched it all seemed very confusing on the cab building. I did modify a mortscript which I use when installing a new rom that first installs the wizard retouched dialer then unzips the skin to the windows dir before rebooting the phone....makes the process simpler and automated.

I was told that GIMP which is a free image editor (open source) and runs on both linux and windows can do the "layered" technique needed to make the dialpads....something about starting with a psd and making 3 layes to make the png file..I still need to research it further but for those wanting to try making a dialpad thats a shove in the right direction...oh there are tutorials for GIMP on http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

Just a little stuff... maybe you can help me.
On the phonepad, everything is showed correctly but the number you're composing is black on dark background, so really hard to check for correct typing.
I have installed it twice from scratch but the results is always the same. Can you suggest me some tricks to have it white? Or is this stuff only mine?

Never mind!!! :(

I found the solution somewhere here in the forum...

Change the following registry address:

HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin\DIALER\landscape(portrait )\text
HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin\PROGRESS\landscape(portra it)\text

And change for TextColor Key (changed in FFFFFF for white)

The touch dialer does have some issues with Mogul. I believe you lose some functionality such as ## functions to get to certain settings screens. It is also a knon memory leak, because it is based on a GSM phone, not CDMA. There is a dialer very similar to this made specifically for the mogul over at pdaphonehome.com

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6800-xv6800/91652-sprint-native-big-button-dialer-theme-here.html

since the layout is about the same, you can use the graphics of neonstorm's dialer with that dialer. Read the whole thread and you will know what to do.

Soft reset phone and don't call up the dialer. Use total commander to copy the files.

Sorry I've been away for a while, had a lot of work and personal issues going on. I'll try to get everything outstanding updated:

Hi Ryan

I am attaching the portrait and landscape pics of the wallpapers that I am currently using

can U pls make a dialpad skin for this ..

Done! See the First Post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1352791&postcount=1) for the download.

I am unable to change my default dialer.I Installed the dialer, copied the themes into my windows directory, i restarted my device but still no result. Is there anyone who can guide step by step how to make it possible??? plz

Hmmm... not really sure. Did the default dialer install and display before you copied the images over? As mentioned earlier, all I've done is rework the graphics so I'm not really sure about technical issues. You may want to check the original post for just the default dialer (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311225&highlight=retouched) for more help there...

I didn't check the size of the dialer itself once installed, but the .cab is 288kb and the images are about 920kb so 2.5mb seems a little high... ???

Being that your device is VGA (640x480) and this was designed on my QVGA device (320x240) I would say probably not... Nice device though!

Make sure you extract the image files to your device's \Windows directory. They must be copied there.

I am using hTC ELF XL and having the same problem as you. I downloaded the zipped files, unzipped and tried to copy those to the Windows folder right after the soft reset but Touch system does not allow to do that.

The files just go into your device's \Windows directory. If you're exploring thru Active Sync, just go to the highest directory level in your device (the root dir) and you should see the Windows directory. Open it and paste them there...

Running a stock XV6800 w/ WM6...great phone, but I wanted a dialer that had bigger buttons and showed the contact pics larger...

I've tried a few different dialers, though I think most are based on a template built by PaulyA...

The dialers work fine. The problem is that as soon as I install them and soft reset the phone, the connection arrows light up and never extinguish. It seems to slow the phone down, too, though I have no empirical data to support that.

I'm wondering: a) why would a dialer have anything to do with keeping the connection constantly on? b) how do i fix this?

I really like the big buttoned dialers, but i don't think my battery or patience can stand a constant connection. Help!

Hey neonstorm,

Could you make the transparency a little lighter? Also, is there any chance you could make a template for pressed versions as well as a landscape one? I know I'm asking a bunch of things, but if you get the time, it'd be really sweet.

Try these on for size - the zip file has just the white buttons, so you'll need the base dialer skin first. I can't test them right now, so copy the desired dialpad to your Windows dir (unless you already have it), then copy the white buttons below to your Windows dir, and soft reset. If they don't work, recopy the original images and soft reset.

Let me know how they look!!

Yeah, I'm using the template you posted a while back. The portrait is the version with the rounded buttons, but the landscape has square ones. I was hoping you could make a landscape one with rounded buttons so that there's more uniformity. Also, when I place the template over a light background, it really makes it quite dark.

The other thing I was asking for in my original post was a template where the buttons were pressed. It'd mean of course that we'd have to cut out the individual ones and rename them to the appropriate files, but it'd be nice to have some graphical feedback when I press a key.

Which backgrounds/wallpaper is it? I thought I'd updated them all, but I'll double check the one you're using. The newer ones now all have the rounded landscape buttons also, as well as a feedback indicator (the buttons darken when pressed.)

As for the lighter buttons, do you just want the layered 'template' lightened or a specific dialer skin lightened?

Ryan

oops, just realized the landscape doesn't have the feedback images... have to get back to work...

Oh, I wasn't talking about a specific skin, I was just referring to the templates that you had posted a while ago so we could make our own. Could you release your updated versions of the templates? I've wanted to have the dialer skin match the default winmo6 backgrounds (the bluish ones attached), but the overlay was too dark, there was no pressed version, and the landscape wasn't same as portrait. I was just planning to do it myself with the templates, but if you want to go to the trouble yourself, I wouldn't tell you not to ;)

I'm just curious if anyone has been experiencing an issue with the contrast???

I have been having an issue with contrast ever since I first got my phone:
when the screen light turn off, I can barely see the buttons. this sucks if you have to make international calls using a calling card; or deal with banking; or anything else that requires you to turn on the dial pad. also it is a problem in bright light. i usualy have to press the power button twice to get the light going again.

can anyone here make a bright/ contrast version??? like a white background with black text/numbers??? is it even possible to change the color of the numbers?

Is the default dialpad the same as the image I posted earlier on this thread? If so I guess it would... Just keep in mind that this overwrites the files. You may want to back up the original images first just in case...

Or you can try completely deleting all the subkeys at HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin\ AND AT HKLM\Software\HTC\Phone Canvas). (This is the long way).
Once you do that, install the dialpad of your choose. THEN restart/soft your device. Hopefully this will work.

All of these dialers are part of the New Vouge / Big Button Dialer / Blue Frog Dialer.

Those with out cab's need to be installed via copy and paste to the /windows directory followed by a soft reset.

The rest should have cab's.

Remember to uninstall any other dialer if it is none of the one's I mentioned above first.

Here are some screen shots of some of my dialers.

update:

for the matrix dialer you will need to import the history and erase buttons manually after you installed the cab.
The cab does not include the buttons in the screen shot. I had to make those separate.

I just stumbled across another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=372098) with some deviations on my original work.

Check it out!

Hey Carlos... I just installed your vista dialer.. which looks great. However, on my phone (HTC touch - Vogue) The dial pad buttons dont show up. Just the original HTC dial buttons. The Background, erase and history button are in the vista theme while the dial buttons stay dark grey. I looked through the files and it seems like the actual dialpad button pngs werent included.. Maybe this is on purpose? When I have installed dial pads before there were always replacement button files named "NmBtn0dn_Land" etc for each button on the dial pad.

If this was done on purpose and the background is just supposed to go through is there anyway I can correct it so the grey buttons dont show? OR.. Could you post a new zip with the number buttons? I realize that may be a pain.

Thanks!

Aaron

I am assuming you soft reseted your phone.
But if it doesn't work after it is because this isn't the original Touch / Vouge Dialer.

This is a substitution ( Blue Frog / aka new vouge )

The original Vouge / Touch dialer needs more files then the Blue Frog does.

If you want a custom dialer let me know.
You can describe how you want it to look or upload a reference picture.

To all other user. If you want a custom dialer, Specify whether you are using a Touch / Vouge or if you need the BlueFrog Aka New Vouge dialer.
The only difference is that the Vouge / Touch dialer needs extra files when it is being created.

Hi,

I did do a few soft resets haha.. But yes if you dont mind at all.. I'd really like a visa theme one like you posted a few posts back.. the vista reanimations. I use the Touch Vogue so I guess I need those extra pngs like I had said in the last post.

Thanks!

Here is another Vista Dialer specially made for the Touch / Vouge.

It includes the files but even better a installation CAB.

I am searching since days for an answer and found this threds. Sorry for disturbing here, because I have a Toshiba G900 with WM 6.0 and 480x800, but I try to skin the dialpad too. This is no problem for the dialer_background because there I could find a picture file in windows directory.

It is called dlrback_port.png

I do not have a file for the progress background, but I need it very urgent. I tried with prgback_port.png, but this did not work :( Now it just shows the dlrback_port.png as the progress backround too and the grafic does not fit!

Perhaps someone here knows the filename for WM6 for the progress background?

If anyone has any backgrounds they'd like, my offer stands: post them here and I'll make a dialer out of it! Famewolf posted a nice one that turned out very well!

Ryan

I'd like to take you up on that offer. Here is my speaker grill BG I'd like to see made into a dial pad. I currently have the Holes Dialpad on my Touch. If possible could you make it with all separate key buttons as well as the 4 rows of buttons so I can compare. Not sure which one I like. I'll gladly buy you a beverage of yer choice for the effort. Thanks in advance.
