View Full Version : Peripheral Compatibility Listing for Athena & WM6...
LTxda
7th July 2007, 03:11 AM
I want to start this thread and have everyone submit information for peripherals that work on the Athena but are made for PC's. We can even add devices which we know do not work. I've already spent a few dollars testing out several Bluetooth mice and I wouldn't want anyone else wasting money, etc. For devices that aren't compatible I would recommend more than one person test in case it was improperly installed/configured/etc.
What do you guys think of this?
To contribute, test and let us know what works and doesn't.
Also, please provide an outline of the specs like with the items listed below.

For reference, I purchased the Logitech V270 BT mouse around april 15, and I have been using it for 50 business days straight (with average use) until now on it's first set of batteries without any visible signs of battery depletion (blinking led indicating an empty battery).
It supposedly has built-in battery saving features, and honestly, I don't see how it would last this long without those features.

Im still waiting on my usb host cable so i cant add anything as yet - sorry.
I would very much like to know if anyone has tried out some powered/unpowered hard drives for compatibility. I have strong suspicions that wm6 will have a lot more usb host functionality and that devices which didnt work under wm5 will now be properly recognised.

I remember seeing something about this within the forum somewhere. See if you can search and come up with something. People were trying HD's and USB drives via the USB connection.

Can you post some of the specifications like I did for the mouse I recommended so I can edit my post and add more info for others?
I think I may go out and buy the mouse because of the battery life you reported. I'm still testing the one I have in regards to battery life.

Do you need the 4-in-1 cable to use it? Or is it BlueTooth?
Pantaloonie

It does require the 4 in 1 cable to plug the usb receiver into (or the dock), so I guess you could call it a wired device.

Just tested The Belkin Wireless Desktop from my tower pc on an Ameo and it works superbly. Seemingly cursor support is embedded into WM6 as all I had to do was pair and I was away!
It works a treat: I'm sending this post using it now. It actually makes the Ameo really feel like an Ickle mini pc.
Hoping that USB devices run as smoothly as this as I wish to use Bluetooth Dun and a keyboard and mouse at the same time - doubt the bandwidth of BT would support 3 devices symultaneously, though I may give it a try tomorrow.
Just remembered - the Belkin wireless desktop's supplied bluetooth dongle is plug n play - when my 4-in-1 arrives I'll give it a test with the Ameo - if it works then it'll expand my bluetoothing potential.

That's great. I tested the Logitech Mouse from my desktop, Mx900 and it works with the athena and WM6 also. I'll post the details later. Meanwhile, when you get a moment...let me know the details of your device so i can update the thread. Thanks for the feedback and help! I'm sure others will find this useful if they are in the market to buy PC accessories for their athena.

it's just called a bluetooth wireless desktop as far as the packaging is concerned. There's one on ebay on the link below if anyone wants to see a picture. Both the mouse and keyboard work perfectly on the Ameo: there's no delay or jerkiness. They give the device a great 'feel' (for want of a better word). Im still on the lookout for a small, affordable keyboard and mouse combo to use though. I'd prefer USB, in part for the purpose of conserving power.
For the record, Ive tested a bluetooth connection to the mouse, keyboard AND bt DUN on a 3G phone simultaneously tonight, and the result was.....it worked perfectly.
so the option to use BT peripherals and other BT services at the same time IS there, but I'd rather keep my attached devices to a minimum.

I tried my usb 250 gig fat 32 drive, the Ameo eventually found it, and I could see the folders, "couldnt before" but still way to slow to access anything on it. its way quicker to just use it as a network drive.
Anybody any luck with a usb drive.

Of course:
BELKIIN B/T Mouse - F8T043
B/T K/BOARD - F8T040.
The 4-in-1 does not support the bluetooth adaptor supplied with this desktop set as there is no relevant software, although the blue light DOES blink.
Have also tested a wired USB optical mouse: Genius M/N:GM-04003A XSCROLL from Maplin @ £5.99; works fine.
AND
a cheap as chips wholesale PS/2 keyboard with USB adaptor @ £2.99, model no. KB-1807
a BCL 3D mini optical mouse with retractable cord. Tested with standard USB and supplied ps/2 adaptor
It would appear that most input devices work, some requiring a restart.
I have tested a 1pound USB 4-port hub from poundland (yes, get em while you can!) and this works perfectly with multiple devices, although my Ameo seems to get confused if you switch ports.
Also tested a poundland USB multi-card reader (call me a cheapskate, but if cheapo devices work then it bodes well for others) and this again works perfectly - blinking USB lights et al. Tried an XD and MicroSD with SD adaptor and both were read perfectly fast. Opens up the device as a useful backup source for digital camera photos/videos.
Tested a FIRELIGHT 80GB USB powered HDD which didn't power up (unsurprisingly), however it also takes a power adaptor for giving it extra bite when used with USB 1.1 devices so I shall give it a whirl later and see what happens.

Johnwalk, is your drive 2.5" or 3.5"? How are you powering it? Does it have a brand name?
For info, I'm trying to find a storage solution and to date have tried an !Impulse" 100GB 2.5" USB2.0 drive without sucess.

I am looking for a very portable travel keyboard and mouse solution for my Ameo, which I will shortly be upgrading to WM6.
I am interested in the views of the posters on this forum as to which recommended peripherals have the right balance of portability and ease of use. For example, I like the concept of the Bluetooth rollup fabric keyboards, but would be interested in hearing from people who have used them.
My preference would be to minimise wired connections so I would like to know if I could use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse simultaneously. Failing that I could use the 4-in-1 cable but I would prefer to avoid having to carry a USB hub as well so would welcome suggestions as to which one (mouse or keyboard) should be wired.
Thanks for the input.

3.5". external usb. from maplin. its a maxtor hd. but fortunately it also dubbles as a network drive if I plug it into my wireless router. I have a 60 gig 2.5" with external powder from maplin also. but I've not had a chance to try that with wm6. as im upgrading my own pc. it didn't work with wm5.

Wireless mini desktop from Maplin works perfectly. No clutter from wires (obviously, and aside from the 4-in-1 cable).
The keyboard is about 30 centimetres wide and less than 1.5cm deep, it has a tiny usb receiver (at about 3.5cm long/1.25cm wide) which doesn't add too much bulk to the 4-in one and it works better than ANYTHING I've yet tried.
This set complements the Ameo perfectly, and yet would also look good with the black Advantage as it has a silver/black colour combination.
The mouse is particularly well built, with a very responsive trackwheel and a small yet comfortable build, and the feedback on the keyboard keys is responsive and pleasurable to use.

The Think Outside (iGo) keyboard and mouse work with their latest drivers on WM6 Athena. The mouse works without the driver, but you have no way to control the cursor speed.

I just got my 4-in-1 Cabel. So I gave it a try. Here we go:
Apple USB Keyboard (german, white)
- works perfect
- it has a usb hub with two ports build in. They work fine as well. I connected my usb Mouse to them.
Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0
- works
- as far as I can tell only Left Button works
- the scroll wheel works kind of. It dosn't scroll, but steps through entries, like if you use the little stick on the top left side of the Ameo.
Kingston DataTravaller II 2.0 GB USB Stick
- dosn't work
Using the Ameo with the Apple Keyboard and IntelliMouse is great! I used it with RemoteDesktop to connect to my office PC. You can actually do work on that setup :)

Apple Pro Bluetooth Keybord
- 2aa batteries required
- A pain to pair up (you have to type the key on keyboard and hit return)
- When paired, works perfectly. Great for typing on the Athena.

I just tried using a USB mouse with the 4-in-1 cable for the first time, and it worked great unless I was connected to my PC via ActiveSync when it would cause ActiveSync to crash immediately. I had hoped that I could work with the mouse while connected to my computer so that I would be able to charge the battery at the same time. Is this possible? Will a BT mouse do away with this problem, and if so, can I use a BT mouse and keyboard at the same time? I checked the forums and could not find the answer. It would be great if this could be addressed in the WiKi when it is up and running.

Thanks. I will look forward to your reply when you are able to check it out. Any workaround for the USB mouse problem with ActiveSync to anyone's knowledge?
Update: Can now use a USB mouse even while connected to ActiveSync. Had to connect the 4-in-1 cable without the mouse attached first, and then the USB cable to the PC to launch ActiveSync. Once my Athena was connected I plugged in the mouse and it has been working fine since then.

Update: After playing around with the COM ports, I now seem to have both keyboard and mouse working together. The keyboard is now set to Outgoing COM1, and the mouse was automatically assigned. In answer to Pyrofer's question about ease of use, I would have to say that it is actually not bad in that I can touch type while looking at the screen instead of the keyboard. I cannot type too fast, but fast enough that I can live with it given how bad the HTC keyboard is. I am a bit concerned about the driver -- the keyboard drops its connection when not used, presumably to save power, but once when that happened I had to do a soft reset. I will be comparing with an iGo Stowaway and will post additional comments then.
=============================
Well, the good news is that I have found two great travel input devices for the Ameo. The bad news is that I cannot get them to work together.
I cannot use the keyboard if another input device is paired already. Turning off the mouse alone will not do it, I have to delete it from the list of BT devices. I would be interested to know if anyone has found a workaround for this, but I would imagine it is a limitation of the BT for WM.
I have not tested the keyboard extensively, but it seems to work well enough, and it certainly is easier to use than the magnetic keyboard.
I have attached photos that give a good idea of how travel-friendly these devices are. I just wish I could use them together. The keyboard does, however, work with a USB mouse. So that is probably the compromise solution.

The Think Outside (iGo) keyboard and mouse work with their latest drivers on WM6 Athena. The mouse works without the driver, but you have no way to control the cursor speed.
I am on radio version 1.47.51.00 on WM6 Rom version 2.20.405.1:cool:
Can you tell me if the iGo mouse reconnects easily after being powered off? The Bluetake one I am using right now does not, and I have to delete the pairing and reestablish it after I have turned the mouse off, which I will want to do occasionally to avoid draining the batteries. I do not have a problem with the Athena connecting with the mouse after a soft reset -- it finds the mouse without a problem.
Update: Ameo connected to mouse after I switched the mouse back on, but now it is not finding the mouse when I power on the Ameo. Must be an issue with the WM6 Bluetooth HID driver. Has anyone had better luck using proprietary mouse drivers? Pairing the mouse every time I use it is not appealing.

I bought an Anycom Bluetooth Mouse after reading this thread. I can pair it fine with my Windows XP PC, but when it comes to the Athena, it starts pairing, but then it asks for a PIN. The "Next" button is greyed out, so cannot continue. The instructions say no PIN is required. HELP!!!!!

I had the same problem at first with my Bluetake BT500 Bluetooth mini-mouse, but after several attempts I was finally able to pair it with the PIN "0000". I still sometimes get an error message saying the PIN is incorrect, but it eventually works. I have also just tried the ThinkOutside Stowaway Bluetooth mouse by iGo, and even though the installation is a bit of a pain it is probably better in the end because it does not rely on the pre-installed Bluetooth HID driver, so is easier to connect and reconnect after a poweroff. It is also designed to use the same driver as the Stowaway Bluetooth keyboard, another plus.
Note: If installing the ThinkOutside Stowaway Travel Mouse be sure to download the latest drivers because the one that came on the CD did not work on the Athena. You can find the latest driver here: http://www.thinkoutside.com/support/Download.asp?did=-1&pid=-1&ver=&file=Think%20Outside%20PPC%20En.zip&link=/support/Download%20Support/PPC/En/dr/Think%20Outside%20PPC%20En.zip

The default pin for most BT devices is typically 0000 (four zero's). Give that a try. Mine worked without any issues on several devices. Hope this helps.

Bought this today, from maplin £14.99
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=259568#
its a wireless calculator and mini mouse. mouse works ok with the Ameo, the calculator works only with the numeric keys, I dont know why the Plus minus ect dont work, it was the same with a usb numeric pad i bought. Maybe someone has a fix for this.
but this is ideal for me because I use spread sheets for work, so you can input the data, then one quick press on the calculator and you can navigate with it also.
this means that i can control Audio manager with it also, but then I could also use the mouse.
Just thought id let you know
John
the calculator is really good at controlloing tcpmp

OK, having just come back from a holiday where I relied exclusively on a JustMobile (Eleksen) fabric keyboard and a long train trip where I used an iGo (formerly ThinkOutside) bluetooth keyboard, I can now say definitively that the iGo wins hands down in terms of ease of use and stability. While the fabric keyboard was an improvement over the magnetic keyboard in that I could touch type, I could not type very fast with it and it frequently cut out and I often had difficulty reconnecting it. The iGo keyboard feels like a real full-size keyboard, and the numerous smart keys (programmable and preset) make it a very powerful device that has turned my Athena into an indispensable road tool. The iGo combined keyboard and mouse driver seems to work much better than the JustMobile keyboard driver in terms of maintaining a connection, but it will really only work with an iGo mouse since it requires disabling of the built-in BT HID driver. Having said this, reestablishing a connection with the iGo mouse is much easier than when I used another BT mouse and the HID driver.
I first used the iGo Sierra BT keyboard because I wanted five rows, including a top row for numbers so that I did not have to set Numlock to input integers. Unfortunately, the folding design of the Sierra makes it very fragile, and within one day it cracked when I unfolded it, sending a screw flying. I returned it and got the Ultra-Slim Sonoma keyboard instead. This has only four rows but it is much thinner when folded and (so far) seems sturdier.

Just been on a private beta session with v1.2 from Teksoft BlueMouse. Everything works well now with my Athena device and Stowaway package ( BT mouse and keyboard). I just got the email that confirms that it has also been released to the public.
It now works with my girlfriends Logitech V270 BT mouse also without the previous bugs.
The guys have also published a long list now of supported manufacturers.
It is way better than the built in buggy and limited drivers.

Situation: I bought the I-tech Virtual Bluetooth Keyboard, sometimes spelled as VKB or VBK, and it worked quite allright with a little hassle on my HP2210 (WM2003) with the appropriate driver.
Problem: Then I bought the HTC Touch, known also as HTC Elf or HTC 3450, and I wanted to use my VKB on this little baby also. Not much helpfull information on the Internet or at any forums otherwise than that it should work on WM6 using the HID.
Solution: After hours of desperate trials and errors, once more I resetted the VKB, paired it with my Touch, had both services (input unit and serial port aqquired), started Word on the Touch, selected Keyboard (screen bottom) and started typing on the laser keyboard. No additional software or driver installed, just make sure you have your bluetooth on, the devices are paired, both services are ticked on on the HTC, keyboard are selected as input method in Word and start typing.

I guess it's an old thread but a bit more info:
Stowaway BT Mouse and Keyboard are working OK on Athena with WM 6.1 with their drivers - it's not 100% - mouse doesn't connect always and sometimes the cursor just disappears. Also Opera Mobile 9.5 beta doesn't start if mouse is working in ENHANCED mode - you should use SAFE mode.
I actually managed to connect both mouse and keyboard also through standard BT stack, but next day I couldn't reconnect and I even couldn't repair the mouse - strange.
What else - I have tried Lenovo USB desktop keyboard (KU-0225) - works fine through docking cradle, just like the no-name portable USB optical mouse.
I have also tried few USB hard drives (1.8" 20GB and 60GB and 2.5" 160GB all USB powered) - through powered USB HUB or directly through docking cradle. None of them worked when formatted with NTFS - I then reformatted 20GB 1.8" drive to FAT32 and it shows in explorer (if connected directly to cradle) but then the device freezes if you try to go there or copy something - useless.
I'll try to get a flash drive to see if at least that is working...
Oh, and I also have some USB-to-Ethernet adapter that actually has CE3.0 and CE.NET drivers on the CD. I tried it, and the device is detected by the system - demands drivers - gives error - I'll probably try to play with it a bit more over the weekend to see if there is something more that can be done...

Hello all,
I thought I would restart this thread by asking if anyone has up to date info on any HDD that works ok with the athena? Also it would be good to get some up to date info on any other peripherals that work well with the athena. Its been a while since it was updated now, I can add the Keysonic ACK340BT keyboard with mouse pad as a great bluetooth add-on.

Yes, everything works fine. It has the laptop type D pad on it with finger scroll. To pair up you search as normal, you set the code (0000) on the athena then enter, follow with (0000) on the keypad and enter on the keypad, but once paired it needs the esc key pressing a few times to show the screen arrow for the D pad. After that its fine.

There is a new Athena Project Redux ROM coming and some of us requested an update with USB hosting which may solve the problems with connecting Athena to digital cameras, external hdds, high capacity flash disks (and other powered devices)
The developer/s are just asking for a little donation so that he can buy the 4-in-1 cable, which is essential for the USB host update development...
If you are willing to donate a little on the project pls. do so, so that we can enjoy using the Athena with our portable storage media....see here:
