View Full Version : Updated HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml file for HTC Touch plugin

Avatar28
7th July 2007, 07:54 AM
I have created an updated version of the HH_0404_WeatherCities.xml file for the HTC Touch plugin. All you have to do is download this file and drop it into the Windows folder on your device. No need to stop the plugin or anything. Once you have replaced your existing file, tap on the city name on the weather tab of the plugin to bring up the list. All cities have been verified on the HTC Accuweather server and the codes taken from there so everything should work correctly. As usual, if you have any questions or requests let me know.

List has been expanded. It should now include every city in the US that is in the HTC database with the exception of few in California.

NOTICE: If your city is not in the list then it is almost certainly because it is not in the HTC database. Therefore there is NOTHING that I can do to add it to the list. Well, I could add it but it wouldn't do you any good because it will not be able to pull any weather data for you. So please don't ask. You can use the following link to to see if your city is in the database.
http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=NAM|US|TN|NASHVILLE
Replace the state code (TN in this case) with the two letter postal abbreviation for your state and the city name (Nashville) with your city. Capitalization doesn't seem to matter. IF you use this link and find that it DOES return weather information for you city and it isn't in the list THEN post a request. I will try to confirm it and if it is, indeed, valid, I will try to get you added to the list.

Enjoy!

Edit: 7/27/07
I have now uploaded two different versions of the file. The version you need will depend on the version of the HTC today plugin that you are using. If you have the older version with only 3 tabs (home, weather, and quicklaunch) then you will use the three tab version (obviously). If you are using a version of the plugin with four to six tabs then download the 4+ tab version of the file.

I have found a small bug. A few of the lines are missing a > at the end of it. This results in the plug-in hanging when you try to click on the city name to choose your city. I will take care of that in the next revision which should be done later tonight.

*points up* Yeah, that's what I said. I just didn't change the file since I expect to have an updated, expanded version up by 9am CDT this morning anyways. I am going to change the organization in it a bit so it will work better as I expand it and make it easier to find your city. Thanks though.

I tested it and it works fine for me. Are you sure it's not your connection? Can you get another city to work?

contentryder (http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=328231), I expect Baton Rouge will be there.

eboy44 No, I'm sorry. None of them appear to be in the list. So far it really only seems to be cities in excess of 150,000 that I've been seeing on the list. With the exception of a couple of cities, the smallest I've seen has been in the 200,000 range.

Avatar28
7th July 2007, 04:14 PM
I have updated the list and am up to 110 cities now (for those counting). That will likely be all for the weekend and I will work on it some more next week. With a couple of exceptions (mainly California), I have gotten all of the included cities in every state. The threshold seems to be right around 100,000 people at this point, though I have had one or two lower and a few higher. I got tired of doing them for Cali after about 20 or so but I did go through and make sure that some of the smaller ones that didn't seem to have another larger city in their county on the list already were included.

I will also try to work on Canadian support next week. I might try adding other countries too, if there is enough demand and I can find the correct abbreviations for them.

I can't take credit on this but just want to share - I saw it on a post here but cannot find it now.

HTC Weather uses a smaller database from accuweather.com so not all the cities available on accuweather.com can be accessed from the phone. To verify the cities you are looking for is in HTC Weather database, go to this link:

http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=ASI|JP|JA001|NAGOYA

and replace the city code. If you won't get a legitimate return, you are out of luck.

That's because it wasn't in there last night. I added it especially for you just before I posted the updated file this morning. :-) I haven't made it to Louisiana yet. It is my intention to have more or less every supported US city in the list (excepting maybe California). For the most part, it looks like that is going to be probably every city of more than about 100,000 people. I've had a couple of exceptions that were slightly less that made it and a couple that were slightly more that didn't, but at this point I can comfortably say that the cutoff seems to be around 100,000 population for the city to appear in their list. So if your city is more than that and you're in the US, you will probably be in there eventually.

Every single one of them should work. I am using the url that clia mentioned to test these so the code for every single one was copied from their server.

Problem is it's more northern to other PA cities so the temp is 4-6 degrees farenheit different.

Sorry, I'm limited by the cities that HTC chose to include in their database. The limit seems to be right around 100,000 people. If there are more the city will probably have an entry, less, it probably won't. The list at this point pretty much includes every city in the US that is in the database.

Avatar28, you say in Post #1 to "..drop the file into the Windows folder on your device..." I can't seem to do that, because the phone won't let me..something to do with administrator rights or the phone equivalent, I guess. I'd most appreciative of any ideas you, or others may have.

Also a second question (and I did search the forum!): Does anyone know how to change the date format to mm/dd/yy, as opposed to dd/mm/yy?.

Are you running Windows Vista? If so, that's likely your problem. Windows Vista locks the Windows folder of your PPC. You have to go into the settings for Windows Explorer and set it to show both hidden and system files and folders. If nothing else, drop it into the My Documents folder or your minisd card and then copy it over to the Windows folder using your phone directly.

Due to a change in the the format of the XML file, the previous version of this file was not working with NBD 7.6 and likely any other version using the same version of the HTC Today plugin. I have updated the file to work with them but at this point I have no way of knowing if it will still work with the older versions. If you are still using the three tab version of the HTC Today plugin, please give this updated file a whirl. If it turns out not to work with the older versions, I will maintain two versions of the file to cover everybody.

When you tap and hold for a moment on the city name, what does it bring up? Just a blank list? Also which version of the today plugin are you using, how many tabs does it have? Also was the plugin included in a custom ROM or did you install it through a cab file? If you installed it through a cab, send it to me and I will see if I can pull your original file out of it and have a look.

Wade, I don't believe it works through T-Mobile's data right now, it gets hung up in the proxy. Supposedly they are working on the issue but for now you will only be able to use it through activesync or wifi.

There are no cities to tap and hold on. The entire list is empty.

I'm not sure what you mean by "how many tabs." The plugin has "ATT" and the date at the top, then a big digital clock, then three options, one for mail, one for text messages, and one for the call history, in the home section. Then there is the weather section, and then there is the launcher.

I installed it from a cab file. Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311225

Try using the other version of the file I posted later in the thread. Or check back, I will re-up them with renamed zip files to better differentiate the two versions. I got the blank list when I used the wrong version myself. Oh yes, and it seems that with the newer versions of the plugin, you have to stop and restart the plugin in order to get it to properly accept the new file. Basically, go to your today screen settings and uncheck the HTC Home plugin and hit okay. Copy the file over if you haven't already, then go back into today screen settings and recheck the plugin under items.

My question is what do you have against California?

Absolutely nothing. I just got tired after about 20 or so cities, especially since it seemed that many of them were all in the same county. I suppose now that the list is otherwise finished for the US that I should probably go back in there and add the rest of them now. I was just impatient to get the list finished previously. Ha, then I can start adding Canada to the list.

Believe me when I say that I checked it. If it were large enough to be in the HTC database, it would be in the file. Only cities of more than about 100,000 people are included. Flagstaff is only about 55,000 and thus too small.

Sorry, Charleston is borderline but doesn't quite make the cut.
Here is the link you can use to see if your city is in the list; just replace the Next to last field (SC in this case) with the two letter abbreviation for your state and the last field with the name of your city.

http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=NAM|US|SC|CHARLESTON

I have updated the first post with both versions of the file. Be sure to use the one appropriate for your version of the plugin.

I'm not sure I quite understand the question. The weather plugin does support areas outside of the US, I just have not updated the list to include any. I'm thinking about adding Canadian support if I have time soon, though. Things have just been a bit hectic lately.

As far as Gainesville, I thought it a bit odd too. Perhaps it just wasn't spelled correctly in the database?

Very very possible. though gainesville works on the reg accuweather site. I wish they could release to us their entire database... bleh...

Yeah, the two databases are completely separate though. More than likely the file that comes with the NBD ROMs is probably the whole database, it's just not as nicely organized as mine is. Here it is if you want it, though.

When you go to the screen where you choose your city, click on the options over the right soft button. You can set it in there.

I'm using htc touch so i downloaded the 3 tab download you provided, but for some reason it still doesn't work. I selected IL-Chicago, and did a soft reset. Still no success. Yes, i did install into windows folder.. Not sure what it could be. Please help..

What, exactly, happens? Also you might try the other version of the file and see if it works any better. It's starting to look like the number of tabs is set by the registry rather than the version of the plugin. You might go ahead and try the other version and see if it works better for you.

They should. I tested every single one of them against the HTC server and they all validate and they seem to work for most everyone else. You're not, by any chance, on tmobile are you? Tmobile blocks access to the server through their proxy, you can only access it on wifi.

Same response.. I now tried both versions, still says "Unable to retrieve data, etc.."

Who is your service provider? I know some of them (t-mobile at least) block access to it at their proxy and you can only connect using wifi (and active sync if you have internet access set up that way).

No way that I'm aware of at this time. Supposedly they're working on it, though. I would try asking in some of the touch files threads or threads like for the NBD or black diamond roms. Or, heck make a new thread for it.

Hi Avatar28

I tried with your .xml file and it works great for me, but i had an issue. My home base is Bogota, Co so i wish to have it in my weather plugin with the code <city name="Bogota, CO" locationcode="SAM|CO|CO011|BOGOTA" /> that i had extracted from accuweather.com, but it said "unable to retrieve data for selected city." Do you know what can i fix this?

Thanks again for this great work !

It's possible that the city isn't in there. The closest I could find was this

<city name="Santa Fe De Bogota, CO" loca="SAM|CO|CO000|SANTA FE DE BOGOTA" land="Colombia"/>

If you have total commander, browse to the Windows folder and see if the existing hh_0409_weathercities.xml is flagged as being a rom file. If it is, you won't be able to overwrite it.

Can you give me the URL you used to check Sherman Oaks? Cause when I checked it I got an empty page (http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=NAM%7CUS%7CCA%7CSHERMAN%20OAKS) which tells me it's not in the data base. It's population is only about 60,000 too, which puts it below the threshold to be in there.

I am currently using TNT.1437 with the 6 tab home plugin. I tried pretty much all the links on the first page and none of them would work. I overwrote the weathercities.xml in the windows directory and now it is showing up as totally empty as if there were no Cities at all... Any ideas?

I did have problem with Weather Panel so I decided to go with the HTC Weather and is working just fine. You don't have to modify XML file, click on weather end select your city. I did notice that the HHCv10b5.CAB can mess your data but not all ways.I'm attaching the XML (Kansas is there) file try this way if no luck try with the CAB.

Sorry the file was to big, so there is only for Kansas, you can give it shot
(change ext.txt to xml).

My city was not listed on in the file and it would not work with the link that was posted to test for a city. However I would like to thank you for your time and trying to make this work for everyone. Keep up the good work.

Heres a question boggle your brains.

I live in the Scotland (UK), by default on my plugin, i have a few major cities listed including Edinbrugh london etc. On the accuweather.com website, you can of course search for weather by state or city within america, theres also a link to UK & ireland search whereby i can find my local town, (Paisley)

Accuweather.coms information for Paisley, Scotland, UK (http://www.accuweather.com/ukie/index-forecast.asp?postalcode=PA1%201AA)

is there any .xml files or anyway to set this plugin for specifically UK & ireland locations? so i can get my local weather in?

If my city shows up on accuweather.com, does that mean it should be working in HTC Home?

http://www.accuweather.com/us/or/bend/97701/city-weather-forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&u=1&traveler=0

However, when I manually edit the "weathercities" file, it still doesn't pull down the information...states not found.

Any ideas?

Thanx.

For everyone who hasn't read all of the HTC weather threads: not all cities are available. There are quite a few existing threads that discuss this issue - if you Google this forum for HTC weather, you'll find them.

If you want to find out if your city is listed, try this:

I cannot replace the xml file on my HTC Touch because it is in ROM and it is read only. I have used many programs including Total Manager to remove the read-only attribute, but the attributes return to read only no matter how many times I try. I cant edit the xml file to add these cities either as I am only able to edit 64kb files and smaller. I also Cannot delete, move, rename or overwrite this file with a new one. How are all of you guys getting the new cities into the current .xml list?

Copy the HH_409 file to the desktop, then edit, and replace.
Make sure you save a copy in case of errors

I live in bumfuc* alabama. I used the htc home customizer and you can add pretty much any city with it. Go to the weather tab and select custom database to add your city.
