Unlocking the phone will make a number of options available to you such as using a different network SIM card etc. If the phone has been blocked by the network (usually - but not allways due to theft or it being reported lost) - there is very little you can do with it - Mike

I unlocked my German MDA Compact III With imei check some months ago and it worked perfectly. Now SIM Free and i installed the official german O2 WM6 Image without any trouble and without using USPL or anything like this.

you should always be able to install the official roms without using USPL. but then again, if your phone is SIM unlocked, it's also CID unlocked and doesnt need USPL anymore (at least that's how i understand it :D)
