I just got my t-mo dash yesterday. I installed active synch and everything. I dont have a data plan or anything but i thought that if i plugged my dash into my usb port with active synch running, it would use my regular internet over the edge. Can i do that?? I dont want to run up a huge data bill. Also on the top center of the phone i see a 'E' in a box. What does this mean?? does this mean i'm connected to edge?? Thanks in advance.

 The "E" symbol let you know you are using the Edge data speed network, but T-Mo is getting ready to change according to the FCC, because they have applied for use of 3g phones, still they will be backward compatible with Edge.!:D

If you are connected to your computer directly, why would you want to use the Dash to surf the net? Might as well use the computer no?!

The E in the middle means you are in area with EDGE service. If you are actually connected to the net and using EDGE service, which means you are being charged, you will see a smaller E on the signal strength indicator.

You can try stopping so that it doesn't show E. Go to Comm Manager there would be an icon in center with phone image (at number 5 on my dopod). This should be enabled. Select this and it goes off. Not sure if this will affect call placing/taking capabilities or any other service on your phone. If you have automatic update of your emails or any other services which connect automatically to Internet, you will see this E icon coming again on your phone.

I think you misunderstood. From fully reading his post, it appears he wants to make sure he isn't using Edge and incurring some sort of 'ala carte' data charges from T-Mobile.
If you're not paying for a data plan, you're not accessing the net via Edge -- so you're fine... Edge carries both voice and data services. (that is if you're a US T-Mobile customer, not sure how it works in other countries)
