View Full Version : How is your HTC Touch on the AT&T network?

I am a huge HTC fan and was debating on the HTC Touch or iPhone. I really need the WM6 productivity but I am worried about the Tri-Band for Cingular/AT&T. I know AT&T is 850 and 1900 but I need some clarification on EDGE/GSM performance going with a Tri-Band. Has anyone here tried the HTC Touch on AT&T? If so, what are your thoughts? (Bandwidth speeds, response time, call quality, etc.)
Any technical feedback would be great.
What I use my phone for is Calendar, Contacts, Email, and some very light web browsing. I DO NOT do media, movies or MP3's.
FYI - A very good HTC Touch and iPhone comparison. (http://www.wmexperts.com/reviews/smackdowns/htc_touch_vs_iphone_part_2_vid.html)

I sent my iPhone back today. It is a great device, but for me a WM6 device is a better choice. I ordered a Touch on Friday based on information that I read on this forum and confirmation from two vendors in the US that the touch is actually Quad-band. I don't think I would have "tried" the iPhone had I known the Touch would work on 850.

I have searched everywhere, eBay auctions, HTC web site, PDAdb.net, etc and I have never seen a Quad-Band version. Can you please let me know where you saw this? Links would be great.
Thanks -

There is no such thing as a Quadband version of the Touch. It's officially listed as a 900/1800/1900 triband phone; I read somewhere that at least one online store that advertised this phone as a quadband phone has been asked by HTC America to change the ad to listing it as a triband.
However, as 2manyphones said earlier, many users have reported that somehow the Touch manages to work on the 850 band (check out this thread at Howardforums (http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1193844) for a discussion on this topic). Having used a Touch on AT&T in the New York and Philadelphia area for the last 2 weeks I can also confirm that it really does work like a champ - I haven't noticed any differences in signal strength between the Touch and the Cingular 3125 (is it called AT&T 3125 now?) and Samsung Blackjack that I used before switching to the Touch.
I haven't noticed any difference in call quality, for better or for worse...then again, I never really had any qualms with call quality, so this was not something I've been paying much attention to. I also don't do much browsing, and for the few occasions where I did go online, EDGE speeds have been ok. Google Maps, which I have been using fairly often, does work nicely.
Hope this information helped - and that we may welcome yet another satisfied Touch-owner amongst us soon :).

I've done all I can to test the touch for 850 and post my accounts as I use it all over Arkansas in 850 only areas. The touch works everywhere and even has better coverage here with a stronger signal that any recent ppc phone I've used (ie Treo750, 8525, 8125, p3600, etc...)
If you get one, be sure to post your results with your signal strength....mabey even on howard forums too....so we can continue to document. I am very doubtful this phone is only triband.

After reading all the comments here, I decided to order a Touch from Mobileplanet. While speaking with the sales person I mentioned I was using Cingular. He said the phone wouldn't work with Cingular. I told him about the users who were able to connect on 850 bands. He said that was a glitch in the first batch of phones but the new phones would not connect to 850. He then suggested I look at xda-developers to see if there was a way to turn it back on. So far none of my searches have found anything in any of the posts.
Is this something that can be fixed with a radio rom?
I then called Cingular tech support. The person there told me he would guess I had a 90% chance of the phone working in my area but they wont even guarantee the phones they sell will always work on their network.
At this point my 8525 finally decided to show up so I canceled my order for the Touch. I still want one. I still want one bad, but I guess I can wait.

Very long time Sprint user here, my most recent phone was the TREO 700p - needless to say I was sick and tired of the constant resets, poor phone quality and carrying a phone as thick as a brick.
I fell in love with the form factor as well as GSM flexibility of the Touch, so I made the jump to AT&T and other than a few isolated incidents, the call quality (here in the San Francisco Bay area) have been good.
My only hesitation was the soft keys but using the PCM keyboard - I don't miss the hard keys I grew accustom to on the TREO.

I can't say this isn't true. However, I can say that I've yet to read about anyone who gambled on the Touch and lost.:) I've had mine for almost three months and I live in an 850 only area. It easily gets better reception than any of my other phones.

WMguy where did you get your phone? I am wondering if it might have come from the first production run and if it did could we ID these phones from serial numbers.
Either way I think I will order one today.

Can someone post picture of phone with cingular sim? I want to see bars! This phone is the iphone slayer and I want it. But hesitant like others, I just want hard proof of usability on ATT/Cingular.

Like the title says I just got my touch and it had 4 bars right off the bat. One bar better than my cingular 8125. Of course according to the coverage map I am on the edge of a 1900 area. I will monitor it and post my results. As for a picture it will have to wait because I am way too busy playing with my new phone.

If you really need proof (doubting thomas....lol), I did a video review of this device several months ago on howard forums. I did it in an 850 only rural area (my house) and have 2 bars.......

Well it has been a couple of weeks and I am still happy with my reception. I just took a trip to see my mom and I intentionally hit the back roads that are supposed to only have 850 coverage.
No problems, noted. I don't know if the sales guy knew what he was talking about when he said there was more than one version of the phone or not. Either way, I am glad I didn't believe him when he said the phone wouldn't work.
Now I just have to build up my nerve to flash the ROM. I had good luck with my 8125 but I hate to fool with my new toy too much.

I am currently using HTC Touch with Triditional Chinese version of WM6 installed. and I am very happy with it. I was on the Tmobile network when i first got my device, and i had nothing but trouble with their network. The tech support from Tmobile stated that their network does not support chinese devices, but after I switched to AT&T i was able to utilize the full function of my HTC Device. I LOVE IT!

I can confirm my "Tri-band" HTC branded Touch works like a champ in all of the areas that a phone that did not have the 850 band should not work.

Yeah, I bought the Touch Dual a couple months back and posted a real quick / stupid little video on YouTube showing it working on the AT&T Network, BUT (and that's a big BUT) since then I have noticed a lot of area where I don't get ANY signal at all. I live about 45 miles West of Chicago and have noticed various levels of Signal. In Chicago, it works Great; in the Aurora / Naperville Area it works great; Random spots West of me and in and around my area-- No Signal at All...
Check the link for the video...

It's an Awesome Phone, I just wish there was a way to force it to work or something.

Great forum.
I just bought a Touch and I'm getting a strong phone signal in the Baltimore area. I have Internet working though Wi-Fi but I don't have the settings for the ATT network. I think I need data settings, Internet settings and MMS settings.
ATT's device configuration pages are not any help.
Thanks for your help in advance.
