If you search, there are several alternatives.
Personally, I use ContactManager for a finger based contact manager: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314048
You can find more in the general development and hacking section.

Here's a second vote for contact manager. It's real slick and does what it advertises!
another tool is called iContact v2.0

It's pretty awesome. There is a new version out last I checked, 0.10, and it works better than 0.09. Also, on the author's site, he explains how to remap your default config to use this as contacts instead of the original application. So that means in your phone, when you hit contacts, contactmanager will open. It uses around 1 mb of ram running, but like daclothe said, it's slick :)

Actually that one isn't developed anymore. The new version is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320544
But I agree... Very slick. I saw this on a 8525 today (or something like it; not sure of the name) and had to have it.

The last time this topic was updated it was still the latest version :p
Anyway, yeah, the new version, PocketCM, is a native version rather than a .NET version, which makes it load quicker and use less memory (doesn't rely on the .NET Framework). Works great!
