Do you need to unlock sim/cid prior to upgrading to wm6?

yes. you should only flash over USB.
I got my 8525 last week.
Started reading the forums and wiki making sure I understood the process.
I successfully unlocked, installed Hard-SPL and vp3G ROM within a few hours. :D

i should be receiving it via fedex today sometime. i'm going to power on the wm5 and make sure i can make calls, etc.

i want to:
1. unlock sim/cid so my friends and use their sim on my phone if they wanna'
2. update rom to latest wm6.
3. install codex to play divx/xvid/h264 files from my 4GB sdhc

the problem with each is:
1. i assume i install ruu on my wxpp and it'll just help me unlock the phone? i haven't even done this yet.
2. which wm6 should i use? there's so many!!! i'm assuming the latest build is the greatest, no?

also, if i customize options/settings, does upgrading rom change all my settings back to default? do i have reset everything once i upgrade from wm5 to wm6 or in the future from an older wm6 build to a newer build?
3. i'm a huge multimedia nut. i wanna listen/watch everything off the phone. flac/ogg/h264/divx/xvid, etc. it'll all work with proper codex yes? i haven't seen many links to it... where to get all these things working?

oh yeah, i luv gaming to. any tetris/etc. can you run emulators on this thing? love to play everything arcade from sonic hedgehog through mario through etc.

oh and is it possible to install apps onto the SD card or not?

oh, is it possible to get different skins for the UI? i'd love to have a star trek theme, i can finally have a real trek COMMUNICATOR+tricorder!

To check if you have a SuperCID device issue the bootloader command 'info 2'. This returns the CID of your device (check the wiki bootloader page if U have question).
To check SIM, just put another SIM card in it to test.

it's awesome. everything worked unlocked.

i also upgraded to sleuth's wm6 and i'm using the 4GB sdhc card. this really rox =). i really like sleuth's version.

now i have to find which codecs to install for divx/xvid playback on the phone.

got tcpmp 0.81. pretty interesting but 90% of the video files i've tried so far don't play smoothly.

i got an older version of coreplayer 1.0 or somn, it still doesn't play 90% of the videos smoothly. i've been using psp/ipod videos.
