View Full Version : T-Mobile Wing Battery HUGE Drain When Radios OFF?

you guys are such geniuses here, maybe you can help me with this:
has anyone notice that on the TMOBILE WING, if you TURN OFF ALL RADIOS (phone, bluetooth, wifi) at night when you goto sleep (flight mode), battery at 100%, the next morning when you wake up the battery will be around 50-60%? ironically, if i leave my cellular radio on, the next morning the battery will be at 98% or 99% even 100%... does anyone know what is wrong? I've heard a few other users complain about this issue... this is a serious bug
call me paranoid but i rather have my phone off completely off at night, we get enough radiation from wifi, cellular, bluetooth daily already lol
THANKS

can someone please reply and let me know if their wing loses a big percentage of the battery overnight when cellular radio, wifi, bluetooth are all off?? if this is only my phone then i need to get tmobile to send me a replacement asap...
cnet review had the same issue when they reviewed this phone a few months ago and they said it was a bug that should have been fixed already by wing's release date.

Most be something with just the wing. My Herald does not do this.

got my new unit from tmobile today, funny thing, the wing and battery now both says MADE IN TAIWAN. the original one i got from tmobile 2 weeks ago is made in china, so was the battery. hopefully this is the cause  will have to leave it overnight with the cellular radio, bluetooth and wifi all off to see if the battery still disappears

...if you use any push mail service (exchange, windows live), but disable the radio, your device is trying to connect to the mail service on and on and on. so if you use any of that services, make sure you disable them too in your comm manager settings as soon as you switch the radio stack off...
cheers, lutz

you make an excellent point! but i don't use any of those, the email i do have, is pop3 and i've set it to check email manually, meaning only when i click send/receive. i'll know if it's a software or hardware issue once i try this new replacement overnight with all the same apps installed as the previous one.

I ran a test last night, turned all radios off (flight mode showed on home)
Battery was at 99%. In the morning it was down to 56%. My wing battery is made in Taiwan, and the phone is made in China.
Are you still having the same problem with your replacement Wing?
Thanks!

Finally someone who has the same issue, now i know i'm not crazy! I just ran the test on my replacement wing, it still does the same thing!!! I woke up with only 54% battery remaining from 100%
1 thing i can eliminate is, this is definitely NOT caused by batterystatus plugin, it had this problem before i even installed that program.
my other none t-mobile included programs are:
skype
phatnotes
tcpmp player
thunderhawk browser
(none of those 4 programs are running in the background) and i went to sleep with a brand new soft-reset and made sure no programs were running in the background. i do however always have an alarm set to go off at 11am every day, but if this is what's draining the battery, then this phone is in some serious need for patching...
i'm seriously thinking this is a hardware issue or a system software bug, i think a lot of ppl don't notice cause they don't go into flight mode overnight since most of them don't care about cellular radiation lol i think 8-10hrs a night without cellphone radiation can only be a good thing, even if all the billion dollar profiting corporations that sells these things wants you to think it's safe

same thing happens to me, battery went from 100% to 50%ish overnight... this doesn't happen if you turn off all radios on your phone for only, say, 2 hours... weird thing... we need some experts of this forums to take a look at this issue, it's bugging me too

OK, so not really solved, but figured out what the problem probably is, and a workaround. It's definitely a bug in the way the application is written.
I think the logic the way it is now is something like this:
If phone app is turned off
"Signal object" reports no signal available
Problem is, the "search for and find signal" object is not told to stop looking! And so, it tries to find a signal all the time the phone is off, draining the battery.
To test this, I switched the phone from Automatic network to Manual. This is under "Comm, Settings, Phone, Network". In Manual mode, the battery does not drain.
Of course, being in Manual mode has its disadvantages if you are traveling through roam areas where T-mo is not the carrier.

I uninstalled the t-mobile hotspot login utility and with all radios off, went to sleep (battery at 92%) for about 8 hours, now the battery shows 91%... don't know if that program is the culprit of all this, will test again tonight.
if this don't work, then i wouldnt mind switching my network to manual when going to sleep then switching it back to auto when i wake up

have you actually TESTED this or are you just guessing? test your theory overnight and we'll see if this is the case, i don't think it is since this is a HTC phone and no other HTC phones have this issue, unless they somehow managed to mess up on this model :\

Finally someone who has the same issue, now i know i'm not crazy!
I can only agree with half of your statements. You are NOT the only one with this issue... but being crazy? You'll have to answer that one yourself.:D
Now then, the method of switching the network from Automatic to Manual sounds promising because if it's actively looking for networks, even though it has already located one, would continue to drain the battery. I will be the guinea pig for this one and report back in about 12 hours (with this problem, my battery won't even last that long lol). I'm also going to set my SMS/MMS settings back to manual as well.
If I uninstall the T-Mobile Hotspot login utility, how would I go about REINSTALLING it?

bah, i thought i had it, but i didnt, i uninstalled the tmobile hotspot utility and this morning i was greeted yet again with 50% battery remaining... i don't know what happen the other night when it didnt drain to 50% but i suspect that it was because i had turn it on once in the middle of the night when i went to the bathroom.
so someone help us please!!!

Switched all network modes to manual, left the house at 8:30pm with a 66% charge, got home at 11:30pm with a 32% charge... and I didn't even use the phone!
The odd thing? When I was charging my phone, it said 50%... but once I unplugged it from the charger, it shot up to 66%. Perhaps there's absolutely nothing wrong with the battery and it's just having problems measuring an accurate amount of juice in the battery?
Either way, 10% juice in 1 hour is absurd... this thing is supposed to have a 200 hour idle life and we're not even getting 1/10th of that!
*EDIT* Hmmmm! I just checked my network mode and it went BACK to automatic for some reason! Perhaps it goes back to automatic after a soft reset? Eh...

lol i find it weird that everyone leaves their phones on at night when they goto sleep with the cellular radio blasting out unneccssary radiation, this has gotta be the case since not many ppl noticed this MAJOR flaw with the tmobile wing...! if you were expecting important calls at night then i understand why the phone must be on, but besides this reason, i wonder why the others leaves the cell radio on

Personally, I always charge my phone overnight, because during a days usage I often run it down to 50% to 30%. Thats about 12 hours a day in my pocket, just a few inches away from one of my most important body parts. If you're worried about nighttime radiation, consider this: if you go overnight and only drain 2-3% of your battery, it shows that the unit is transmitting very little, with not a whole lot of that radiation you are worried about. If you are still worried, turn it completely off, it only takes a minute to turn on when you wake up. If you use it as a morning wake up alarm, or have other needs to have it on overnight, try pulling the sim card, see if that helps.

all good advices, and i do use it as an alarm, but thats a hassle to take the sim card out every night... what i really want is for the unit to function as it should, they shouldn't release a phone that kills the battery EXTRA hard when in flight mode! thats like the completely opposite of what it's suppose to do...
i want to find the cause of this problem...

Something is obviously running in the background that polls something, that prefers to have the phone active. Could it be the clock/time sync? Anyone know if there is a real task manager out there that shows CPU usage of all processes running?

My problem is that the battery dies during the times of the day that I need it most. I don't care what my phone does while I sleep, but I do care what it does while I'm awake... and keeping a charge is not one of them.
Switching the network mode to Manual did nothing. I am still seeing an abnormal battery drain (6-7% in one hour while doing NOTHING). I will definitely call T-Mobile as well as pay a visit to my local T-Mobile dealer and bring this up with them. Absolutely ridiculous...
I have reason to believe that EDGE is the culprit. There are spotty areas of service in my house and while I was sitting in one of them, I lost all service. I noticed that the phone was trying to connect to the EDGE network for no apparant reason. Perhaps it's connecting on it's own and stays connected without giving any notification?

yea get a new phone and battery from tmobile and see if that solves it, but can you please try this out tonight, turn off ALL your connections in comm mananger, your cellular radio, bluetooth radio and wifi radio, etc, then see how much battery is remaining when you wake up

And therein lies the problem... I don't charge my phone during the day, only at night when I sleep. I have noticed a steady drain rate on my phone while it's sitting idle (about 6 to 10% an hour). I will put my phone into flight mode now and come back in one hour to report.
As of 4:43PM CST, I am currently at 71%. I will return at 5:43PM CST.
Oh and by the way, I only have my cellular radio on at all times. I always turn off bluetooth and wifi because they drain the battery... lol.

well considering it only takes 30min to 1hr to charge the phone to 100% using it's original AC adapter, you can charge it to full 100% tonight before u sleep, then turn off ALL radios, goto sleep, report back here tomorrow morning :) see if you have the same problem i have... thanks

According to your results, going from 100% to 50% over the course of an approximate 8 hour sleep means a battery drain of about 6.25% per hour while idle. Why wait that long? Now I don't know about your phone, but mine will NOT recharge to 100% in 1 hour. I usually need 4-5 hours. Remember... something is causing the battery to drain at a much higher speed than normal, so it would still be active while recharging the phone as well, thus slowing the recharging process.
And besides, I've already done the test, here are my results...
At 4:43PM CST... 71%.
At 5:51PM CST... 56%.
That's 15% per hour with all radios off. So, if I actually did charge the phone to 100% and went to sleep, I would wake up with a dead phone... and that's NO way to start off the day, believe me.
I still blame EDGE. Do you have any data connections set-up? The phone may be constantly trying to procure date for some unknown reason. If I recall correctly, this all started when I began using the T-Zones internet trick. I've turned off the proxy settings in the T-Mobile Data, will report back at 7PM CST with current battery level...
... and I'm leaving my cellular radio on.

hehehe, thanks for your useful report and 'detailed' reply back lol, yea so if you lose that much battery in 1hr's time with all radios off, something is definitely not right here, i'm still here wishing someone would help us and find the cause of this mess or at least say we are all crazy and that his tmobile wing is working fine! if this 'radio off and severe battery drain' exists for ALL tmobile wing users then we can really pool together and force tmobile to develope a patch for this issue!!
p.s.
it's not the tzone trick causing this, i had this problem even before i had tzones/internet setup on my phone, as a matter of fact, I think i remember that this problem is there even after a fresh HARD RESET with NOTHING (3rd party software) installed!

I cracked... went to my local T-Mobile store and told the rep that the battery sucks. I informed her that the phone has a rated battery life of 200 hours idle... and that I don't even get 20 hours. She asked me if I use the phone a lot, I told her that if I just let the phone sit on a table with the screen off, the battery will drain 10% per hour. She pulled the battery out (without asking me to turn it off  Shame on you Tiffany!), took a look at it, and brought me a brand new one.
Told me that because it's a data phone, they can't ship the battery back for inspection, but they are able to give me a new one to see how that works out. If the problem still happens, it might be the phone. I called 611 and talked to a rep there, said the same thing.
I'll report back in an hour to see how the new battery holds up!

Well I don't know if anyone has posted this already but I just put my wing into flight mode and watched battery status to see if the cpu usage is higher...
With flight mode on the usage jumps up to 12-13% every 10 seconds or so. With flight mode off the usage stays between 0-3%. so something is definitely eating up the battery when flight mode is on.
Just thought I'd share.

Hi all, I just got my wing a week ago and so far the batter seems to be ok (big knock on wood). Last night I went to sleep about 2am with battery at 52%. Woke up this morning at about 830-900 with batttery about 41-42%. I always leave the phone on at night. During the day of making calls, using edge for browsing, maps and other apps, it drains about 30-40%.
Battery is rated at 1130maH and made in China.
I will post back with battery usage levels.

Uh... wrong? That's the whole reason why I've been sitting here, posting about this issue. My problem is that the battery dies out too quickly with the cellular radio ON. My first battery was made in Taiwan... the new one the T-Mobile rep gave me is made in China. We will see who does it better ;)
ANYWAYS... my results with new battery!
07:00AM = 100% charge
10:30AM = 76% charge
24% in 2.5 hours... and I didn't even touch the phone ALL day! Ridiculous you say? It gets better...
10:30AM = 76% charge
07:22PM = 56% charge
20% in 9 hours? Battery fluke? Perhaps my phone was really at 76% when I unplugged it this morning? Who knows... but I do know something that MAY have contributed to the solution of my problem.
When I was on break at 10:30am this morning, I looked at my phone and was pissed to see such a huge drop in juice. So, I went into the Comm Manager and turned on ALL radios possible (phone, wifi, bluetooth, beam, and activesync), then I turned them all off, left them off, and soft reset my device through the pinhole with my stylus. When my phone started up again, it actually looped back and rebooted AGAIN, but after the 2nd bootup it seemed normal. I turned on my phone radio and left it be. From then on, the battery usage went back to the day I got it. I monitored it during lunch at 1:00PM (72%) and again on my 3:30PM break (69%). I remember reading something similar on pdaphonehome.com... the article can be found HERE (http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6800-xv6800/90728-strange-battery-suck-down-experience.html).
Give it a shot... what's the worst that could happen?

Ok I found the culprit, I used a taskmanager program and force end task this program called "Connmgr.exe", then I turn the cellphone radio off and wifi bluetooth all off, went to sleep, woke up next morning with the same battery charge level as before I went to sleep which is 100%. Did this for two nights already and same results, will try again tonight to triple confirm.
After I end task this program, the battery doesn't drain anymore when radios off, but I am also unable to turn the radio back on, a soft reset is required each morning to turn the cell radio on again... so if this program is the one causing the battery drain, then none of us newbs can do anything about it... only a veteran of this forum can help us now... Sweet deal nvgear! What I'd like to know is how did your battery perform during the day. What's your battery drain while idle per hour?
Personally, I think GPRS may be the real issue. I found a "No Data" program over at Modaco forums which allows you to disable your data connections, perfect for roaming. My data connections and GPRS were all turned off, but they were all enabled when I started up this program. I disabled Data, MMS, and the WModem link and exited the program. Upon returning, I noticed that the Data connection was still enabled  I've disabled it again and it's still disabled now.
GPRS does use more energy than WiFi, so this may be the reason. How does it tie to Connmgr.exe? SIMPLE! Connmgr controls GPRS connections. Ending Connmgr then turning off the cellular radio will disable the GPRS connections too and won't let them turn back on.
Either way, good shooting on the Connmgr.exe... what Task Manager program did you use?

From my observations GPRS uses a lot less power then WiFi any day. My GPRS connection is always running. Of course I see less battery life this way, then if I don't have GPRS enabled. But once I start using WiFi it's all over with.

GPRS does NOT use more energy than wifi, wifi radio uses like 5 times more energy.
my standby time with cellular radio on and bluetooth on is very normal, i lose about 1-2% battery every hour during the day (without any phone calls or heavy usage, screen off), with phone calls, the battery drain obviously goes up... anyways this post is about the abnormal battery drainage when radios are ALL OFF...... and that is my biggest problem... :(
my battery usage during the day with phone and bluetooth radios ON is 100% normal.

From my observations GPRS uses a lot less power then WiFi any day. My GPRS connection is always running. Of course I see less battery life this way, then if I don't have GPRS enabled. But once I start using WiFi it's all over with.
yup, you are completely correct... i leave my gprs connection ALWAYS on too.. i use the 'gprs softweak' to make it stay on permenantly since i have unlimited data plan... and the battery drain is about 1-2% an hour when i'm not using the phone (in my pocket).
p.s.
gprs connection wastes VERY little battery when no data is actually being transferred.

All I know is that I used the NoData program to disable GPRS and my battery is back to normal. As far as I'm concerned, problem solved. Just re-enable the Data whenever I feel like using the GPRS, no biggie.
I still suggest giving the NoData program a shot, you can download the file HERE (http://www.modaco.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=20053) and the thread to the original post is HERE (http://www.modaco.com/FREE-Utility-t246171.html).
*Please note that you have to be logged into Modaco in order to download the file.

No problemo... I am interested in that task manager program you spoke of. I normally have about 23MB of memory free, now I barely get over 16MB. I'd like to see what's running in the background.

hello everybody! i am a new guy. My O2 STEALTH also has this problem(Battery HUGE Drain When Radios OFF), and i try to find the reason serial days. today i found something, maybe can helps you guys to find out why.
if you shutdown the screen(sleep mode) with radios on, the PPC is in real sleep mode, you press any key, the PPC has no response. BUT! IF YOU SHUTDOWN WITHOUT ANY RADIOS ON, THE PPC IS NOT SLEEP! YOU JUST SHUTDOWN THE SCREEN AND YOUR PPC IS STILL WORKING! if you press any key, the keys-light will be on.
press the BEGIN-KEY and open the screen, see what? the BEGIN-MENU was opend!
i will continue searching the way to solve battery drain.

Mission Failed. I had exchanged the battery the same day as using NoData... but the problem came back :(
I called up T-Mobile on Friday and gave them a piece of my mind. 10 minutes into the conversation, the sales rep is sending me a new phone. I should get it by Wednesday or Thursday (stupid business day shipping!).
This really really really sucks. Just when I thought I had fixed the problem, everything goes stupido torpedo!
Does ANYBODY know WHY this happens?

your program didnt solve the issue, the battery still drains, if i end task connmgr.exe the battery stops draining overnight when radio off

i tried what you said (shutdown without any radios on) the buttons don't light up, with the radios on and shut down, no button light either, the light on the button only goes on when lcd is on.

Maybe our phones and ROMs are different, and my O2 STEALTH, the buttons light up when radios off(in fact, just cell radio off).

I soft reset my Wing after shutting off the radio's. The battery doesn't drain after that. So this explains why a soft reset works. The connmgr.exe program isn't running after a soft reset. I will stick with the soft resets for now.

Yeah... I had swapped out the battery again with a new one the same day I downloaded this program, thinking it had fixed my issue. Now I'm back to the old crappy super mega suicidal drain of death.
My friend and I did some calculations and it turns out that there is something wrong with the voltage regulator on the phone. He says it's too low and that the battery drain reported on BatteryStatus is off. Need I remind you all that I'm trying to do this all by memory and my phone has made me incredibly angry recently, so it's hard to remember it all. I called T-Mobile and gave them a piece of my mind and sometime Wednesday afternoon, I will receive my replacement Wing.
Anyways... for those of you who have a normal battery, what is your battery drain at when you are clocked at 201mHz? Right now, I'm at 64mA (245mW).

HEY, after i shut off the radios then soft reset, when I woke up 9hrs later, the battery was still at 100% !! thanks for this workaround... i guess i'll do this for now until someone figures out a permenant fix.

I worked on a friend's TMo Wing (in the US) over this past weekend. When I flash the OEM ROM, the first thing it does on Hard reset is to look at the network to find the 'Circle of Friends' and ports them to the home page. I presume there must be an application which launches to do this automatically.
I had not read this thread prior to today, but it may be possible that with the radios off, this same application wants to verify the friends and constantly tries to access the network. But since the radio is off, it never verifies but keeps trying. I don't have access currently to a Wing, but I thought I'd offer this if it of any use to your battery drain problem. I don't think it is the battery or the device, but TMo's glorious network app. (IMHO for what it is worth)

Last night I was so fed up with my disgusting battery drain that I just got fed up with it and Hard Reset my phone and left it stock for one day. At 10:00AM I unplugged my phone from my charger at 100%. It's 9PM right now and I haven't seen a charger all day... 68%. So I'm thinking that one of the .cab's I had installed may be the culprit. It could be one of the following...
Date and Time
Battery Status
Total Commander
Palm Threaded SMS
SKTools
Slide2Unlock
Personally I believe that it may be SKTools because it was the most recent .cab I had installed just before my problem originated. I also noticed a drop in battery after I had set up my GPRS set up for T-Mobile Web for my internet. Just my $0.02...

Glad I could help. I am just happy that I stumbled on this thread. I thought it was just some rogue program that I installed but this thread clued me in that it had to specific to the stock configuration. Funny thing is the battery drain was sporadic. So I figured out it had to be the soft resets that stopped the process.
It is always something that makes these things less than perfect.

I don't have SKTools installed and I have the same issue. I've tried another battery (China) but same problem. Stock battery is Taiwain.

the battery drain is caused by a built-in software program within the wing, it has nothign to do with what you installed, the battery will drain even after a hard reset with nothing installed if you leave the radios off
