Bluetooth EDR support

Is EDR a hardware or software feature? If software, are any of the roms have EDR support? If not, will there eventually be EDR software support hermes?

I thing Enhanced Data Rate is HW related, so it is not enough to update only firmware, but change whole receiver/transmitter. but it is 100 percent compatible with older versions of bluetooth. more details in HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth).
