[UPG][V.1]ELF USPL - CID Unlock & flash *ANY* rom to your device[ONLINE]

This is a patched SPL for HTC Elf devices (HTC Touch / HTC P3450 / Dopod S1, o2 Nova, etc...).

This SPL is based on original Elf 1.11 SPL but includes 3 patches:


g_cKeyCardSecurityLevel = 0 (set 32)
Does not check Model ID
Does not check signature*


(*) code must be formally signed i.e. contain properly-formated signatures on their places, however no checking are performed against them.

This means you can flash ANY ROM to your Elf after flashing USPL on it, no need to pay for CID unlock anymore!

Instructions:
1. Unzip
2. Connect your phone to computer, make sure activesync is enabled (green icon)
3. Run elf-uspl.exe on your computer and follow instructions on screen:

and hit ENTER to start...

STEP 1/3......50%......75%....100%

The next step will load a patched bootloader (SPL) on your device
it will make your device temporary SuperCID (seclevel=0), and will
avoid modelID and signature checking when flashing NBH files.

Hit ENTER to continue...

STEP 2/3.....15%.....25%...50%...75%.....100%

Phone screen should now be blank and the activesync icon gray
if not, the loading procedure has failed and you'll have to repeat again.

If all was OK hit ENTER and the standard "PDA Phone ROM Update Utility"
window will start, allowing you to flash patched SPL on your device.

Hit CTRL+C to Cancel or ENTER to continue...

Follow the steps on the wizard to flash the patched SPL, when this
step completes your device will reboot.

STEP 3/3 - Launching RUU, please wait...

Process is finished, congratulations!

Update:
Some ROMs (specially O2 Nova) don't allow to run unsigned applications by default and some people have reported difficulties installing USPL. If you see a popup asking to run unsigned code, you need to rapi-unlock your phone manually, to do this download enable-rapi.zip and follow the instructions inside the file prior to installing USPL.

Notes:
1. I have only tested under XP, people says it works on Vista too.
2. Unzip the file, do not run it on the zipped folder. (Note: Better to unzip in c:\ folder with no spaces on the name).
3. This will only CID unlock your device, not SIM unlock.
4. On some devices STEP 2 fails the first time, just hit CTRL+C, softreset your device and start over again.
5. To create NBH files for Elf you should use HTC Rom Tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311909) by Dark Simpson, because "nbhgen" doesn't create proper NBH files for elf.
6. You can use Artemis splash screen tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317726) by jcaron safely on the Elf, the Artemis RUU is compatible with Elf-USPL and both devices have same splash screen format.
7. After flashing a full ROM (containing a SPL on it) you'll overwrite USPL, so you'll need to repeat the USPL flashing process again.

I went through steps 1 and 2. Then started the RUU with the ELFUSPL hack from pof. But it always gives me the message "[270] UPDATE ERROR" and "Image file is corrupted". I downloaded it again from pof - no change.

Now I wonder if:
1. Is it ok if the ActiveSync icon remains gray (not connected) after the step 2 and during the step 3?
2. Is this method not appropriate for O2 Nova (German)?

Don't know what to do now. Would anyone be so kind and give me any hints, please?

To create NBH files for Elf you should use HTC Rom Tool by Dark Simpson, because "nbhgen" doesn't create proper NBH files for elf.

Well, as far as I understand, you have to reboot and reconnect the phone with USB cord to the computer after step 2. This is what the rom installer says once it is started in the step 3. Have you done this?

No, but you can flash a rom from a different provider or even a cooked rom.

You can't flash USPL on a device stuck in bootloader. You need to boot Windows Mobile to flash USPL.
Try to connect into bootloader using mtty, and issue these commands:

Cmd> ruurun 0
Cmd> ResetDevice

If it does return to bootloader after this, then you must flash original ROM matching your device's CID.


Works perfect in Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit.

Yes, with USPL you can flash unsigned NBH files.


I went through steps 1 and 2. Then started the RUU with the ELFUSPL hack from pof. But it always gives me the message "[270] UPDATE ERROR" and "Image file is corrupted".
This is because you are flashing in real bootloader, not in patched bootloader placed in RAM. The USPL nbh file is not signed with the proper signature, so in order to flash it you need to be running the patched bootloader that is placed on the device's RAM on step two. You must see a blank screen (not tri-color) after step 2.


Now I wonder if:
1. Is it ok if the ActiveSync icon remains gray (not connected) after the step 2 and during the step 3?
2. Is this method not appropriate for O2 Nova (German)?

1. Yes, after elf-uspl.exe places the patched SPL into RAM and jumps into it, activesync connection is disabled because the device is running in bootloader mode (not windows anymore). So after successful completion of step 2, activesync icon should turn gray, otherwise means something went wrong in step 2, in that case just softreset and try again.
During step 3, you must see activesync gray icon at the begining, but the RUU will kill activesync in order to communicate with the patched bootloader, so the icon will disappear when the RUU starts flashing. The flash process takes a few seconds, as it only flashes a SPL.
2. O2 Nova is HTC Elf, righ? then it should work.

Wrong, you don't have to turn it off and on, it should stay on the white screen (which is the patched bootloader in ram). Don't believe what the RUU says. When the RUU starts the icon should be gray.

Because you are trying to flash a non signed file into the real bootloader. Follow the steps as described, do not reboot your device and it should be fine.

Technically yes because USPL is not the official bootloader, and also you do lose it if you flash a non-official rom for your device. But:
a) USPL does not have the version number patched, so it is difficult to identify that it is a patched bootloader by only looking at the bootloader screen.
b) USPL can be replaced just by flashing an original rom, that would return your device to original state and don't loose the warranty.

I was also advised on one of the russian pda forums that I should extract ELF_USPL_v1.zip into the root directory of disk C:\, rather than in a separate /ELF_USPL_v1/ folder. Due to all this it has finally worked out on XP SP2. May be this will help the others.

damn. I tried to flash my HTC Touch with new Russian firmware RUU_Elf_HTC_RUS_1.15.411.1B_4.1.13.42_02.93.90, but after 1% was done the updater returned the error "Error: 294. Incorrect identifier of the vendor. This updater may not be used for your phone. Check your updater". What does it mean exactly?

now I got what never should happen. I got a bluescreen while flashing my device. Now it hangs in bootloader-mode and I am not able to flash it any more.
I con´t flash the doped-rom, because of an invalid vendor ID, and I also can´t use the CID unlock because the device doesn´t boot any more.

What can I do???

I am a bit further. To flash with microSD the name of the file must be ELF0IMG.nbh. But it Doesn´t flash because vendorID :-(

Is it possible to flash/install only the nb-file to my device? So it should be possible to flash the USPL and then flash whatever I want???

I have paid an on-line service to have my Touch CID unlocked so I can flash the Dopod WWE ROM onto my HTC CHT ROM. One thing I was not happy about Touch was it had very little storage memory. I found a new ROM (posted in this forum) which could provide much bigger storage memory with extended ROM removed. But I couldn't flash it because it kept reporting errors. I ran your patch and the flashing went OK. Thank you and keep up your good work.

Notes to all newbies: Please donate to this forum and don't be a free-loader. When there are multiple "stars" attached to each of your name, this forum bound to be a successful and fruitful one! I pressed "yes" and the step 2 was successfully completed. The ActivSync icon went gray, the screen blank. Now it goes a little bit different: there is no pop-up on my PDA screen. Instead, there is the "Penguin logo" on the PDA and "creating preloader, jumping to system mode mapping, loading SPL to RAM". At this point do not disconnect your device. Just wait for it to boot up and let activesync finish, then you start all over again and go through the process again. Happened to me twice.

Everything you say seems as if you have done the process correctly, don't know why you're getting the error. Try doing it a few more times, as I said step 2 sometimes fails when jumping to the SPL in RAM. If that does not help try to hard reset your device to make sure there's no software preventing USPL to work correctly and also try flashing USPL on a different computer.

This UNLOCK tool works well on my HTC ELF firstly.

When I try to update my ROM from CHT Taiwan into WWE, it FAIL in the process of 3% with the alarm,"ERROR [294] : INVALID VENDOR ID"

You should extract it into its own folder before running, and not from the zip file, as already indicated by Pof. I hope you are doing the right thing, and also with windows op system :eek:

Everything you say seems as if you have done the process correctly, don't know why you're getting the error.

It looks that the pof's unlocker doesn't work with O2 XDA Nova!
Did anyone here successfully patch the Nova?

I have extracted the extended rom folder to my desktop and i`ve been wondering if someone could use the information and files in it to unlock the cid maybe.
In config.txt for example is a line saying Lock:Enabled:confused:
Just a thought but maybe, i´m posting this because i don't have the knowledge to see anything in it but maybe you have....

I have never had any issues with any HTC phone in terms of CID unlocking and flashing any ROMs in the past including Hermes and Trinity, but I am also getting the error and everything I do doesn't get me around it.

Very frustrating.

But anyway, I hard reset the bugger and at least it is back to normal now...

I would just like to check with you... When I check the Version in Device Information, I get these:

Does that mean that actually I did not have to unlock it?

You'll have to set it up manually, search for the settings on KPN's website...

As far as I understand now, SPL is less 'secure' / safe then Hard-SPL... WHat are the differences for you guys developers, like pof? Will a hard-spl become availlable for the Elf do you think?

Besides that, I am interested how hard-spl works, hard-spl simply means that your spl won't change after flashing a rom that would normally replace the spl right? But hey, I can image such a question might me a bit hard to answer :D

HardSPL for hermes & trinity has some more features (like not allowing spl overwrite) because hermes is more easy to brick and the SPL structure is quite different.

I had the same exact problem. I have a Taiwan Touch with CHT, wanted to flash WWE, used this CID unlock method but when I tried to load WWE, gave "Invalid Vendor ID" error at 3% into the process.

Solution: flash Seksona's version: HTC Touch Official Rom 1.11.707.1B with 55mb Storage & 4mbPagepool. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320407

This version worked and I now have WWE on my Touch, thanks to pof and Seksona.

Right, down to my problem, and I hope it's just because I'm missing something really obvious.

So I ran the ELF_USPL utility, which seemed to work fine, if a little faster than expected. The Orange files are still there, and when I then tried deleting the Orange files, they're still write protected. I can deselect the read only flag using Total Commander, but they still won't delete.

Is this because when I run the utility, it simply reloads the Orange ROM back on to my device? I haven't selected another ROM, and am not sure how I would load it with the RUU utility, as there was no option on the screen.

I have an elf and I was able to get rid of plenty of worthless sound and other files that just take up space. I just go through the phone using Resco and delete them that way and they don't come back unless I do a hard reset.

If you flash a trinity SPL you'll kill your ELF, forever.

Your phone is not rapi unlocked. You need to run EnableRapi.cab on your phone first. After that you'll be able to install whatever cab and also USPL.

USPL does not allow you to delete ROM files. USPL allows you to flash unsigned rom or rom not matching your CID. You need to cook the rom in your computer, create a NBH and flash it using USPL after.

Did you try it again? Most people report having to try it multiple times. You should read through this entire thread because others had similar issues.

I could not get it to work on my computer and had to do it on a different computer.

After the 4th try it works. At least. RUU said it is flashed succesful:) But it took 30 seconds instead of the 10 minutes...

Problem was that I restarted the mobile when the connection got lost ( after the screen shows blank )

Your phone being SIM unlocked means nothing when flashing ROMs and Radios. Everytime you flash a new ROM or Radio you need to CID unlock the phone again.

You really need to read through this website. If you don't know how to flash a new ROM you can brick your phone and screw yourself.

Un-zip that .rar and extract everything. Run the ROM Update Utility, follow instructions.

I too have uk version of the tmobile touch and want to remove branding so I can have the good htc look rather than the girly pink tmobile one.

Can I just check I have this correct, I have downloaded the spl programme and enablerapi from the first page of thios thread along with the first rom on that page inc ext rom (whatever that means).
I first run the unlock programme, then run the rom (does this include a ruu) then i run the unlock programme again and I should have a fully functioning device with the original htc look is this correct?

I then only need to reinstall my programmes contacts etc and chage my network settings for email?

I dont fully understand this changing the storage etc on the rom, does it have any bad effects on the rom because I wonder why htc dont do it if it improves performance?

Any idea whether flashing Schap's ROM for Hermes on a Touch, after USPL would work?

I'm asking because the USPL's howto seems to say '...If all was OK hit ENTER and the standard "PDA Phone ROM Update Utility" window will start, allowing you to flash patched SPL on your device...' whereas the MrVanX's howto for Schap's ROM install seems to ask running RUU separately...

Does USPL program start the Schap's exe somehow?

But, I don't want to flash an WWE-ROM. I want to Backup the original-rom to microSD.
But if I write "r2sd all" at the little program romupdate_115.exe it comes an error that the command is invalid. Why? :confused:

Is it right that HTC erased this command in the newer models? :mad:

Hi,

I'm new to xda-developers.
I've flashed the USPL to my HTC Touch unbranded device.
No problems at all.

But now I'm unable to flash other ROMs to my device.
I'm getting the new Bootloader (three colored display with IPL 1.11.0002 and SPL 1.11.0000) but the Flash Utility cannot connect to the HTC.
It says ERROR 260 : CONNECTION.
I've tried flashing several times without success.

Any Ideas?

UPDATE: I tried to flash the USPL again. After Step 2 the device boots into the Bootloader (with the nice Linux Logo) and the Display gets white.
Then in step 3 the Flash tool starts and tries to connect to the device without success.

Yes and it will stay until you do flash a ROM that includes a SPL (official ROMs mostly have custom ROMs usually don't have SPL included

yes and yes when you first flash this USPL - maybe you don't need that if CIDs of SPL and ROM match - but to be save flash USPL first

Now the Update is working!

It was the Option "Extended Network Functions" (german Erweiterte Netzwerkfunktionen aktivieren) in Settings > Connections > USB to PC.
You have to disable this Option to get the Flash Utility working.

Now Big ROM, Radio Update and so on....

So it is not nessecary to dumb your ROM.
The extROM and all extras are not included. Only OS how in the other ROM's.

No, with the next original Provider AKU-Update the IPL and the SPL will updated. Then the USPL will erase and the CID will locked.

You can't flash USPL on a device stuck in bootloader. You need to boot Windows Mobile to flash USPL.
Try to connect into bootloader using mtty, and issue these commands:

Cmd> ruurun 0
Cmd> ResetDevice

If it does return to bootloader after this, then you must flash original ROM matching your device's CID.

I did took my chance to CID unlock my french Touch, unfortunatly I am now stuck in 3-colour boot screen.
I did manage to connect with MTTY, but when running:
Cmd> ruurun 0, "Need password!" is returned on the mtty console.
Then I tried :
Cmd> ResetDevice, it did reset the device back to the 3 colour screen...

I am stuck what can I do, Pof if you hear me !!!!!

- I did manually launch "ROMUpdateUtility.exe" provided in the "ELF_USPL\RUU" directory, even if the RUU terminated in error (ERROR 270, if I remember well), it did reset my Touch and the latest could restart normally.

Notes:
- I did removed the microSD card
- Hard Reset had no effect (still stuck in the 3-colour boot screen)
- I had do 2 or 3 attempts (Soft-Reset, and then manually run the RUU) before getting my touch ack to life

Finally:
- I did AGAIN the Pof CID unlock method and could finally CID unlock my Touch to upgrade my Radio ROM !
- Then do not give up, it takes (sometimes) many attempts before succeding !

I haven't been able to flash, and don't think it is related to pof's tool. I follow the steps and get to the blank screen (ie boot mode), as icon is grey and run the ruu utility, it shuts AS completely, but then always get an error 266 (i think), but basically that the utility cannot communicate with my device.

I tried flashing a couple of roms for the sake of it, and always the same thing, the ruu utility can't communicate with the device when the bootloader screen is on. I also tried with manually getting in boot mode and then running the ruu, still same error.

Any suggestions?

P.S. I've updated my TyTN dozen of times, literally, and never had such issues.

All data, personal and any installed applications etc (you don't lose any data on the storage card of course). It is same as doing a hard reset, you end up as when you powered the phone on for the first time (well, with different ROM, and any custom application incl. etc.). This does not relate to pof's tool in this thread, it shouldn't cause any data loss.

You can either make a backup using something like sprite and then restore, which I think is a bad idea (i.e. a clean start is always best). Or just live with restoring your contacts, calendar etc. through MS Activesync with Outlook, and reinstalling all applications (you can also try PPCPimBackup, search on xda, if you want to restore other PIM things, as sms, call history etc.)

Btw, if you don't know what data you lose with a new ROM, you should be either very careful flashing the phone (e.g. read and do step by step) or just don't do it :-)

Update: I can only flash WWE roms. Any other language roms will fail due to "INVALID VENDOR ID".

Even the WWE ROMS doesnt flash, shows the same error message "INVALID VENDOR ID". I didn't try cooked ROMs from these forums, I tried only the orginal ROMs shipped from HTC. I tried to flash Au, HK and Green Touch's ROM. All these original ones I downloaded from this forum.

I tried flashing after removing memory card and sim card, after hard rest, after installing enable-rapi, tried in another computer, I tried in all possible ways, still couldn't get through this error. Please help, how to make my device SuperCID?!

My windows OS is XP pro (SP2) on all the three computers...

While trying to change the splash screen Artemis asks for a ROM Update to version 1.93...

Is my ROM safe by doing this and will there ba also data loss by just altering the splash screen picture?

Yes,everytime when u flashing ROM ,u need CID UNLOCK again,if you want safe.

Alright finally proceed to do this CID unlock as wanted to flash to some
other ROM, even prepare to reserve one whole day in case encounter
problem and need time to troubleshoot.... But lucky for me:
Whole process went through successfully under less than 3 minutes,
believe me. Using a Windows XP SP2 PC and with the sim and sd card
remain inside phone (SD card even contain one RUU_signed.nbh incase
problem appear). Flash to new ROM successfully done in about 10 minutes.
Now putting back whatever application I used to have - and this should take
me the most time.

I did a folder named elf on C:\. So, my folder is C:\elf. You can do the same on C:\ or onto another partion as well. The content of the zip archive should be in that folder.
Connect your phone to computer, make sure activesync is enabled (green icon in tray).Run elf-uspl.exe from your computer and follow instructions on screen.
Read the firs post to be sure what to expect. Good luck!
