Hi,
I think O2 is pulling a fast one again.
I went and registered with HTC last month and tried a 3300 download, but got the message that the Ser # was not an HTC branded phone and to check suppliers web site. So no joy until today.
I have checked the link in this thread about every 1/2 hr for the last few hrs but get the same message as everybody else- ie site too busy.
So I registered again just now ie 5 mins ago and tried a download for the 3300 with the same results ie not a branded device. The point being that the site is not busy at all. Registration requires an email authentication mesage which was all instant.
Poor show O2 and typical of poor service.

You get the same 'busy' page no matter what serial number you put in. There is actually a separate incorrect serial number page, hosted under HTC for O2 like this http://member.htc.com/RUUdownload/O2UKErrorSN.htm
The busy page seems to be a standard HTC error page with a completely false reason. Any web developer knows this is typical work by clueless managers or so-called marketing people when the developer asks 'what do you want in the standard error page?'. They always want to shy away from the ugly truth.
http://member.htc.com/member/ErrorHandler.aspx
For now, O2 has gone ahead and posted the link and HTC's web master hasn't got the files released correctly. My guess is someone at HTC's website f**ked up the weekend release originally planned for Monday and O2 would release their simple software update single pager on Sunday night or Monday first thing. Since no one would have known the HTC url anyway and HTC could have released it weeks ago without anyone touching it, couldn't they check the HTC page before releasing the O2 page?
Kennymusicman
30th July 2007, 11:54 PM
since they (xda landing) say it's a 3rd party checking - does anyone think that 02 may actually have the link themselves - a-la older (IIi = http://www.my-xda.com/downloads/Xda_IIi_Upgrade_v111171.exe)
perhaps something along those lines for WM6 update?
It just seems to be a case of "lets make it available in July - albeit the last few seconds of July before midnight... then we've delivered in July.."
Afterall, why would it be so busy at 11PM GMT if it's going to primarly be UK'ers d/ling the UK version...
Guess another 24hrs before we see it ? lol.
Oh well...Just when I thought "yey - the link is up"...

Exactly right Humps, this is representitive of O2's treatment of it's customers - Piss Poor Planning!
The whole thing doesn't exist properly yet, my gues is that when HTC actually put the SN checking into place, it will look something like the german upgrade site: -
http://member.htc.com/RUUdownload/O2Wm6SnCheck.aspx
Seeing as it's in the same location as the UK SN checker: -
http://member.htc.com/RUUdownload/O2UKWm6SnCheck.aspx
This currently redirects you to an error page without performing any checks!!
As to when that might happen, i'm not holding my breath!

That does seem to be the correct address, but probably receives your serial number from the O2 page that's meant to send you there. It just isnt working yet.

The coding of the page at present doesn't do any checking, it just forwards you onto an error page: -

I tried grabbing the viewstate and other values such as my serial number from the request the o2 page sends, and passing it to http://member.htc.com/RUUdownload/O2UKWm6SnCheck.aspx but it just flops.
I think it's just not there yet, and their "Server busy" message is pure BS.
I'm giving up for the night. I'll be back to press "Continue >" a bit more tomorrow.

Hi Everyone,
I have just got off the phone to O2 Customer Services. I spoke to a supervisor who has promised to call me back before 2.30pm UK time and give me an explanation.
Not satisfied with this, I also called HTC Europe technical support. I was told that they have not even got a release date for the O2 Windows Mobile 6 update. When I explained that O2 are already offering it on their website with a link to HTC, the guy seemed very surprised, and promised that they would be contacting O2 to find out what is going on. I urged him to escalate this matter to the highest level, and also asked him to call me back when he had more information.
The next few hours should prove to be very interesting!! In the meantime, I'd would advise everyone to sit tight and don't bother to try to get this file. The bottom line is that it is simply not available in any shape or form at the moment.
What a disappointment, after we've been waiting so long.

Spoke to O2 last night, they told me it was a server error!!! Yeah right! Spoke to HTC Europe technical support @ GMT 10:00 am today, they looked at www.my-xda.com and tried continue with my Orbit's S/N, then put me on hold saying they would look into this!!!
HTC Europe tech support do not look after the site my-xda.com links to, have to call HTC Headquarters. Called HTC HQ, they seemed not to know anything!! So, spoke again to O2 tech support, got the same answer, server error, so explained the HTC site is not doing any S/N checking, after going in circles for 5 mins not accepting the server error standard line I was passed to someone else in tech support. He was very helpful!!! He did start with the same answer, but as soon as he knew I understood what was going on he explained this was being investigated at HTC HQ and would hopefully be fixed somepoint today, he accepted this was not a load issue. Your points are correct on the linking (3600) and the no S/N checking plus the error being HTC end, so O2 are not to blame as far as I can say....shame they won't be up front and helpful straight away, people would appreciate it more, although you can understand O2 being loyal and protecting their providers too. Rock and hard place I feel!!!
So, fingers crossed for today ;O)

I have just this minute heard back from O2 Customer Services. The link on http://www.my-xda.com/xdaOrbitSoftware.html is now going to be removed.
Apparently the official line is that O2 are still testing the WM6 release. I was told that they cannot provide me with a release date, but they hoped that there may be some developments next week, though they cannot guarantee anything. So don't hold your breath guys.
They have apologized for the confusion that this has caused and thanked me for bringing it to their attention.
I told them that is has been a disaster in terms of customer relations and that there are now some very disgruntled O2 customers out there.
Meanwhile, I am still waiting to hear back from HTC...

They indeed are sending out phones upgraded in store to O2 users with wm6 on them. (so how can it be still in testing)
They have released a working and I assume a tested version on german O2 (correct me if I am wrong but this is only in a different language.)
They have put up a link that doesnt exist.
They change there story depending on who you get when you call. (anything from its imminent to will be a while to we have no intention of releasing it)
Surely O2 have a duty of care and an appropriate level of customer services NOT TO LIE TO US.
If anyone from O2 indeed reads this forum can someone get the TRUTH from O2.
I run a company and if indeed offered this shambolic customer service level I would be out of business.

I respect that you own a company, but I believe lying is a standard practice for a lot of big company support departments trying to cover up a mistake.

From what has been said so far I believe the page that is currently up on the O2 site is the genuine release page. However it probably slipped into a published status instead of a finalised status. It shouldn't be online.
They probably are finishing the delivery method for the update as we speak, and instead of removing the incorrect webpage they are leaving it up until they finish sorting the file out.
I predict they will have the file ready either today or by tomorrow noon.
However if they pull that webpage today then the file won't be ready until the end of the week at the latest.

Hey everyone,
Here are the facts as I see them so far, having spoken to both O2 UK and HTC Europe today.
1. The link on the O2 my-xda site does not work and whatever the message says about server overload, the update is not available, and nobody has got hold of it yet since it would have been posted here already.
2. O2 have admitted to me today that it was a mistake to have put the link on their website, apologized for the confusion, and informed me that they intend to remove the link.
3. They cannot give an accurate date for the release of the WM6 ROM upgrade, but hope that it will be available next week, as it is in the final stages of testing. The fact that they are now shipping WM6 Orbits seems to be contradictory to this, but what can you do?
4. HTC Europe seemed to be blissfully unaware today that O2 are even linking to their site! Even signed in as a member of their HTC eclub, I was unable to link to any O2 or HTC WM6 update for the P3300 (their original version of the Orbit - for any noobs). The technician assured me that no date had yet been set for the O2 WM6 release, and that his company would be contacting O2 to find out what the hell was going on.
Now, here's my interpretation of the facts...
1. O2 don't give a monkeys about how long this upgrade will take to release, as they will not be making any money from it. On the contrary, it may cost them more when their helpdesk has to field calls by less technically aware people regarding the upgrade.
2. HTC genuinely don't know what O2 are up to regarding the WM6 release. O2 don't know what HTC are up to regarding the release. O2 don't know what O2 is up to regarding the release. Incidentally, T-Mobile got their act together ages ago.
3. We the loyal customers, have to wait. Make sure our contacts, appointments, emails, SMS etc are backed up nicely...but still wait...
4. Thiis is a complete f*** up that has p****d off a lot of people, including me! Please feel free to continue to call O2 and HTC (as they are BOTH responsible for this fiasco) and make your feelings known.
Cheers - roll on WM7!!! hehe

"I'm just writing regarding a problem you may already be aware of. On http://www.my-xda.com/xdaOrbitSoftware.html you have a link to the Windows Mobile 6 update, this link appears to point to a non-existent file on the HTC servers. HTC are unaware of this file being ready for release yet this link has been available since last night.
I've been attempting to download this update since last night.
1. If the update file isn't available then why was this link posted?
2. If the update file isn't going to be available today, why is the link still active?
3. When will the update be available, it would be good to post this on the website when/if you remove the download link?
Thanks"

I used the online form and they limited the number of characters I could use. So I had to remove a question ("how many people of complained about this?") and the "hello" and "warmest regards" bits. It's their own fault, let me use more characters.
Anyway, no response yet.
I'm hoping to get the "we're still testing it" response, because I want to reply with "If you are still testing it then why are customers receiving handsets with WM6 installed after sending them to you for repair?"

True, after many months, a few days is nothing.
On the other hand, it is wrong to post web pages claiming to offer an upgrade when it is clearly not available.

I agree ezman - let's just sit quietly in a corner and do nothing. That's what O2 and the rest want from "their children", while they continue to take our money and provide poor customer service.
The issue is not the long wait for the upgrade, it's the manner in which they have announced the upgrade and then failed to provide it.
Now go to your room - there'll be no tea for you tonight!!

Im with mdsharpe, we are all anoyed with this, but what is the point in all getting angry. we got these amazing devices on WM5 and we were all still stunned with that enough to part with our cash, whats the sudden rush to go to WM6, i know its new and a must have, but getting angry and getting your hopes up will just make the joy of actually recieving it less as you have got so hyped about it.
i cant wait untill it comes out, but im just leaving them to their job at o2, the less people pestering them means the less emails they respond to, and the more actual problems they can solve.
a polite email (as sent by Huckly) is good enough to remind them that we are here and waiting, but going all ape at them isnt going to get you anywhere.
wouldnt you prefer them to release a stable and better version a bit later then for them to rush it and mess it up?
thats just my view anyway.

yes wm6 may be available on new orbits, but think about it a min, its very easy to ship a clean install on any device, to upgrade is alot harder. there are all those user settings and files and appoinments, contacts and who knows that you probably wont want to lose when you upgrade. yes they shouldnt have posted a link to something that isnt there yet. But i seriously would prefer not to have to beta test an upgrade like microsoft do to us with things like vista and xp when it was released. just chill

Update
HTC has been in touch to assure us that it was all O2s fault, but they'll have the download working tomorrow (Wednesday). O2, meanwhile, have admitted that the link shouldn't be up, and tell us they're having it removed right now: presumably just in time to prevent anyone downloading the upgrade in the morning.

The most annoying thing is that no one can speak to someone in o2 who can say for sure what the hell is going on. It just depends which cs rep you speak with as to which answer you get
IMO this is poor service for such a premium product
Come on O2 - Just release the same rom that you are already flashing on new and repaired units - surely it's not that difficult
And just as importantly, let us (your paying customers) know what the heck is going on.
You are meant to be in the communication business !!!!!

Only Joking :D
Think it's best a few people calm down and get grip on things! This is a free upgrade which o2 were not contractually obliged to deliver!
So the web team fecked up and uploaded it before it was ready. It hardly warrants the ball chewing that o2 are receiving about this from most posts here.
Yes, your excited about updating your os, I too would like to see a faster performing device, but lets return to reality here.
It's a minor upgrade of a fairly boring phone/pda os. It's not going to fix any of the major floors with the orbit, such as the silly tiny close icons, the keyboard so small you need pin point accuracy to type coredctly and you'lll still need to hit the end key a few times to be sure a call has ended. You will still have trouble typing a text or email while walking or one handed, and it certainly wont be a slick at the iphone inteface!
Calm down it will be here when it's ready!! Good things come to those who wait patiently :p
These posts were a great read, Thanks to the irate people who have lightened my boring afternoon!

There is a O2 task manager in the today tray, but you have to close each running program manually though. It also has office mobile (excell, powerpoint, word), the program shortcut today plugin only allows 5 shortcuts not nearly enough..:(

Ordered a XDA Orbit off eBay... should come tommorow and i'll install the update. Having owned a Himalaya, BlueAngel and Universal it's going to be interesting to see the new differences implemented in this version of Windows Mobile.
But I just want to make sure of something, if my XDA Orbit is not the UK version will the 02 website decline the serial number? Is there a way to check if it's the UK version - possibly a sticker underneath the battery might say?
Also, will I have to go through procedures to install this ROM, such as bootloader, moving files here and there, renaming files, etc. Or has 02 made this user friendly with a simple installer? I'm really nervous about flashing the PDA as I'd hate to imagine that the installer failed and I have barely had it for even an hour.
Thanks.
P.S. Although this is my first post on the forums, I generally view threads and read up on the WiKi to further improve my knowledge - trying to avoid 'nooby' embarrasing questions like this! But I just want to be 100% sure...

But I just want to be 100% sure...
the install procedure is very easy, just connect the pda and run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions :)

Theres a sticket under the battery with a serial number, you need that to get through the O2 authentication, but you mightget some joy from downloading the update from the mirrors listed earlier i nthis tread.

I just found a solution for the O2 Custom error that you will see when you are using a non O2 simcard.
O2 Custom
O2 Custom is designed for installation on O2 devices only.
Make sure that you stop all running tasks, open your file explorer and delete the 'O2 Custom' from this directory \Windows\StartUp\

Same happened to me. After trying several times, I deleted the Activesync partnership, uninstalled Activesync, deleted the Install-folder of Activesync and re-insatalled Activesync again. Then I was able to run the uspl utilility with success and installed the B&B rom again:)

Instructions for installing WM6 on your device through Windows Vista:
Download the latest Windows Mobile Device Centre Software:
Vista 32 Bit - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=46F72DF1-E46A-4A5F-A791-09F07AAA1914&displaylang=en
Vista 64 Bit - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4F68EB56-7825-43B2-AC89-2030ED98ED95&displaylang=en
Once that is installed, disable any firewalls and run the update
The phone will be put in bootloader mode, and windows vista will start installing the drivers for when the device is in bootloader. The update will give you an error, saying it cannot connect to the device. DON'T WORRY.
Once the drivers are installed (for when the device goes into bootloader), run the update again.
It should install fine now.

Installed the O2 Official WM6 ROM last night and so far everything working well. Definitely more memory available with this ROM and click response seems snappier.
Can't find any evidence of the WM6 VOIP client - looks like it may have been removed. Anybody else installed the WM6VoiP.cab file I've seen elsewhere?

I'm not sure if I want to change over to the official ROM just yet.
I've currently got BB3.7 running well with SPB Mobile Shell and a few other little bits and pieces.I regularly upgrade the Radio ROM and have very few issues.
Yes, I wish the camera didn't have the delay, but that may be changed in BB v4.0.
Also, although I'm an O2 customer of sorts (my provider is a subsidiary of O2 on our island), when I run efficasoft GPRS monitor, it allows me to choose my GPRS connection corrwctly, but doesn't update at all, so for the last 3 weeks it says I've used none of my 50Mb allocation.
It worked perfectly on the factory installed O2 ROm that was on the phone originally.
What I could really do with is the O2 operator settings wizard that runs automatically after a hard reboot.
My provider (Pronto) was listed in that and automatically set everything to work perfectly.
When I installed BB 3.7, I had to set the connections manually, so maybe I did something wrong, even though I have no GPRS connectivity issues.
The CAB of O2 settings posted elsewhere is only for mainland UK O2 settings, and when I tried using that it (quite obviously) borked my settings. So I changed them back to get it working.
Can the correct file(s) be extracted from the new ROM and be posted somewhere.

I agree with the last post. Being in Ireland the mainland UK cab is no use, but the original from the WM6 and WM5 has the correct settings. I tried to get it from the EXTRom, but there are files in the windows directory on the original ROM that are the ones for this. I couldn't locate all the files and there maybe registry entries too.
BB3.7 is the best so far. I can't wait for 4 and hopefully these settings will be included...

Well the download works fine with Opera so why the hell would I want to use IE7?
I have also tested other browsers too now and they all work, the only one that seems to not work is Firefox. So perhaps you should ring them back and tell them they should add 'Don't use Firefox'

A little late, as I have been using the upgrade since Wednesday.

A silly question, one that I can't find an answer to yet.
If I don't like WM6, how do I go back to the exact current version I have - I don't see it in the "shipped roms" - it's O2 - UK
and:
Rom 1.25.206.2 WWE (10/4/06)
Radio 02.67.90
Ext Rom 1.25.206.101
IPL 1.25.0001
SPL 1.25.0000
GSM 02.67.90
OS 1.25.0.0
Just which of these does it overwrite
I've been checking the cooking rom sections -- and some of you are genius's

My o2 task manager didn't install at first either. I took out the SD card (that had tomtom on it) and reinstalled the rom and it now works. Tomtom was autostarting after the reboot and upsetting the upgrade so it seems.
Another problem I have found is that the phone whilst initially working with my bluetooth car kit has now stopped working and causes the kit to freeze the radio so no sound at all other than any screen taps I do on the Orbit coming through the car speakers.
Any one got the original and latest WM5 O2 UK rom?

I'm running the O2 WM6 rom on my T-Mobile MDA Compact III, I really like it but there's one thing I can't figger out.
When my P3300 is turned on, the screen won't turn off after automaticly. Only after one minute the brightness become less. In the settings menu (Backlight) I've enabled the option 'Turn off backlight if device is not used for '10 sec'.
Is it posible to setup the device so it will shutdown the screen after a minute so it will be totaly black ?

hi Everyone.
I have a T-Mobile MDA Compact 3 but with a O2 sim in it so this ROM will be really useful. If I install it into my MDA will it work. At the moment I cant send picture messages as the setting O2 gave me dont work so this ROM should include everything I need.
Can i just upload this ROM to my T-Mobile MDA Compact 3 and then i will technically have an O2 Orbit with all settings?

Yes but you need to do it in two stages, first flash USPL http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311403 then the O2 ROM.
Also if you want something different you can flash a custom ROM like B&B4 and it has all the O2 settings in the network wizard.

You must run USPL update first, BEFORE flashing this ROM. USPL link is http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=41246&d=1181558635. Extract this zip and run start_uspl.exe. Follow EXACTLY what it says on screen. After you get to the Congratulations screen on PC look at phone as it re-boots. SPL figure should read 1.11.0000. If so then USPL has flashed OK. Once phone has restarted then you can flash WM6 ROM of your choice.

as Fizzoid suggests - remove the micro sd card and reflash the Rom image. Wait for all the o2 configuration to complete and the phone does a reboot. Then reinsert the mocro sd card and tomtom should reinstall. This happened with mine and now all is ok (so far anyway).
I also downloaded the Rom again in case there was some glitch with the first download. I did this because I had a problem with my bluetooth car kit - when the phone conected on the second day, the car kit froze and I had no radio or anything, so I reinstalled WM5 and all was ok.
I have now downloaded the Rom for a second time and reflashed and the bluetooth is ok this time. It may have been that one or two of the programmes I installed were not compatibe, I don't know.

Hi, my first post, I've looked around for hours trying to find answers to a couple of issues I have with the official O2 WM6 ROM on my orbit. If anyone has any anwers I'd really appreciate hearing them!
1: Wi-Fi on/off toggling from title bar, in original WM5 ROM if wi-fi was on, tapping on the wi-fi icon in the title bar on the today screen brought up a drop down saying "turn off wi-fi", in WM6 it says "turn on wi-fi" even it is already on, I know you can swith off by going via comm manager, but it would be nice to have the old option back.
2: Option to create an incoming bluetooth port no longer present, I want to use my orbit as a bluetooth gps receiver for my laptop by using gps2blue, but the option to create an incoming com port is no longer present in the bluetooth settings menu, is there a registry change for this or has the bluetooth functionality reduced for WM6?
Cheers, pK;)
