Invicible small apps

I'm creating the iTask animated menu, and I need some small freeware applications that can do certain stuff in the background, like the ones that vijay has. (vjdialer etc.)

If you know about some, please post back!

you may want to be more spc about what "certain stuff" mean
or you'll get 1000 applications writing "hallo world" to a non existing consol output :P

sorry, I meant useful apps, like power off, volume up/down, backlight, or apps that can do many things with the help of command line parameters. Small and invicible.
