I have a Dell Axim X50V & loaded WM5 A01 with no trouble, then moved on to A02 - again no trouble. Now, I cannot get WM6 to load. I press power + wireless + reset and the machine does a hard reset, not a reload. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

I followed the advice from Cybera - bounced on the reset button several times and - hey presto - it worked. I now have WM6 working and so far, so good. My thanks to MagLite & all others who helped produce the ROM.

Hi,

I have updated from 2003 to 5 A1, 5 A2, copied the WM6 files to an Sd card (fat32), when I try "wireless + power + reset" I get a option of factory reset or cancel, no searching for Sd card or Rom update, what am I doing wrong ?

Uptill now your updates and instructions have worked 100%

Ok, I have an x50v, with wm2003 and I'm trying to upgrade to wm5 ao1. When I download the archive and extract the files are there supposed to be two different files or 4? I only get 2 files. As far as I understand, I have to download a bootloader and the corresponding crc file and then the OS image and the crc file. Then I have to rename the bootloader to start with dima. Please correct me if I'm misunderstanding any of the instructions. Am I missing some files, and if so where should I get them? These are the files I've downloaded.
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0.crc

Guys I have spent the past 3 hours reading everywhere, I have renamed files to dima, I have hit, the 3 buttons dozens of times and all I do is a hard reset, no booting of anything.
I tried using the Dell wm5 from my computer but as soon as the program sends a message to the Axim it looses the connection to active sync and cannot load the files, guess what? Hard boot again.
I think I can hard boot with my thoughts:mad::mad: by now.
Any experienced help would be appreciated. Thanks

WOw the amount of patients to do this is incredible, and the reading involved is extraordinaire. I ended up bricking my unit, and it took me a while to unbrick + run the win mobile 5 installer,. I think after 5 hours of dicking with this I am a pro at it , hahahahaha

THANKS A MILLION TO ALL WHO POSTED THEIR PROBLEMS AND HOW THEY FIXED THEM.

those two files you have to rename them to:
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc and DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0 but you need to download 2 more to upgrade to win mobil 5, those two just open the door so that the pda can see the win5 install files, you need to download the rar that comes with all 4 files and then rename the first two.

I successfully was able to update my Axim to Mobile 6.

I started out with the following unit:
Dell Axim x50v
Operating System: Windows Mobile 2003SE
Processor: Intel PXA270
Processor Speed: 624Mhz
Ram size: 64MB
ROM size 128MB
ROM version: A05 (07270500)
As with many people finding this thread, after seeing over 140 pages of posts it is hard to figure out the exact steps to do this, especially if those steps on the first page are not fully correct.
The following steps are what I had to do to get mine to work. Please read carefully, and remember to be careful when flashing your PDA ROM. In fact, read through this all first, then follow along performing the tasks.

Please read this carefully. This is "ONLY" for the Dell Axim x50v model.

Step 1
- If you are currently running Windows Mobile 2003SE, please download THIS ARCHIVE (http://rapidshare.com/files/53847340/AximX50v_WM5_A01_EN.rar) (RAR 32.4 MB)
- After you download and unpack the RAR file you must change the name of (2) files:
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
so they will now look like:
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
Do not modify the other (2) files listed

- Copy these files to the root of an SD Card and place back in PDA.
- Start the SD Image Loader by Pressing Wireless + Power + Reset
**NOTE: Hold down Wireless, then hold down Power, and then just quickly tap the reset button still holding down the wireless & power until the SD Image Loader appears on screen.
- First you will be updating the SD Boot Loader. it is the only item listed so press the center button of the round pad twice.
- After this is done it asks for a "Hard Reset".
**NOTE: I ran into a problem here. Instead of doing a "power+reset" I did the same reset as mentioned above with wireless+power+tapping the reset button. This killed my PDA temporarly. It no longer booted up or turned on. To fix this I ran a diagnostic. With the PDA plugged into the base, hold down the Record button and tap the reset button. Once it starts the memory test, then you can do the wireless + power + tap the reset button to continue with the OS update.
- Once you have rebooted back to the SD Boot Loader you will now see a new item listed. Press the center button of the round pad twice.
- When finished reset the device as instructed "Power+Reset" (i didn't tap the reset button this time)
- Your PDA should now be updated to Windows Mobile 5 A01.

Step 2
- Now download (http://rapidshare.com/files/53856933/A02_WM5_x50v.EXE) official WM5 A02 ROM and update your PDA to WM5 A02 ROM
- Plug your PDA into the base. If Windows attempts to set up a partnership cancel.
- Extract the contents of the newly downloaded file and run the program 'AximUpdate' and follow the instructions.
- When finished reset the device as instructed "Power+Reset" (i didn't tap the reset button this time)
- Once finished your PDA should now be updated to Windows Mobile 5 A02.

Step 3
- Now we finish by installing Windows Mobile 6. Download (http://uploaded.to/?id=7okbp1) the files.
- Delete any previous image files from your SD Memory Card
- Unpack your newly downloaded RAR file and place the (2) files on to the root of you SD Memory Card and insert back into PDA.
- - Start the SD Image Loader by Pressing Wireless + Power + Reset
**Reminder: Hold down Wireless, then hold down Power, and then just quickly tap the reset button still holding down the wireless & power until the SD Image Loader appears on screen.
- Once you have booted back to the SD Boot Loader you will now see a new item listed. Press the center button of the round pad twice.
- When finished reset the device as instructed "Power+Reset" (i didn't tap the reset button this time)
- Your PDA should now be updated to Windows Mobile 6.

And there we go, all appears to work again and much faster I may add. A little lengthy for a description, but that should help others that had the same frightful challenges I had.

Great Tut mate, pity it wasn't on the first page:):)

Just to be absolutely sure, the bootloader files in the archive named "AximX50v_WM5_A01_EN.rar" that can be downloaded from the first post of this thread are to be renamed from "WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0" to "DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0" when upgrading from a Windows Mobile 2003 OS/Bootloader?

Also, has anyone tried to use any SDHC cards above 8gb? If so, does the device recognize them fully?

This is my exact settings on mine, but I still get the error "No suitable image found!"

I also tried to do the USB update, but the program just crashes when I try to do it that way. I have been messing around with this thing for hours and can't seem to find what the problem is. I don't know what else to do, as I have tried everything in this thread.:(

Edit: Got it to work now, after I reformatted yet again and started over, it seems to be working this time.

Trying to flash. Seems to get either the diagnostics to work or the flash process I need to keep the wireless +power held in all the wway through the flashing process. If I take my fingers off The machine does nothing.

I don't want to risk flashing as if my fingers slip during the flashing process it might permanently brick the device.

Anyone any ideas?

EDIT: Found the problem. The units been dropped on the button lock. Seems thats whats causing the problem!

When I thought the same had happened to me, It was suggested by someone at my work that I try to clear all memory on the PDA etc by putting the thing in the freezer for 24hrs (like you would with the old car radios...apparently ..lol), which I did and I managed to get the self test to start after that but I hadn't got the SD card in the device after doing the reset after running through the test, I couldn't get it working after so I will try again but I must admit that I was surprised it came to life and pass all the tests... I'll try tomorrow... well I'm not holding much hope, but I'll try anything... but if it wont work I'm not going to be too bothered, just a shame though.:(

Or I can update from "Dell Axim X50v WM6 A01 ROM" equal to "release A02 Release Candidate 2" directly?

I have got my AXIM X50v by ebay with Windows Mobile 5 installed (instead of 2003 Second Edition) and the System Information shows
RAM 64 MB
ROM 128 MB
ROM Version A00 (10130500)
DEUTSCH (that´s German)
First of all, is it possible to update to Win Mobile 6.x and if so, is german language available?

Thanks for the post.

I followed all the instructions from joshlindems post, and ended up with an unbootable device untill I found your post. I held in the wireless and on/off button and pressed the reset button rapidly about a dozen times, and then got the screen to come back on.

I followed the rest of Joshlindems post and ended up with a successful install of WM6. :)

Thanks..Andy

Fixed it!

What I did was simple, I pressed the Power + Wireless (hold on to that), then press and let go Reset a few times (while still holding on to power + wireless)...

and while still pressing power and wireless.... suddenly the screen just came up..and i can select my rom for WM5!

Hurray!!!!

its updating now... Phew!

I received a Dell Axim x50v and reviewing alot of this forum I think this one may not work again but I will tell you what it does and see what you think?

When I got the unit it did not work the lady that gave it to me said her husband bought the next latest and greatest so he no longer used this one. She said it was setting around for a couple of years but she could not get it to dock.

The reason it would not dock and charge was because the docking station is broke. Oh and by the way the dock has no charging cord.

So the charger I bought does not dock it but just charges. If I take the battery out and plug it in it will fire up, the Dell blue loading app comes on then once complete the other window will pop up and says to push contacts to reset or mail to restore tried both but it just keeps coming back to the same.

After reading these threads I tried running it through diag it worked once after several attemps it rebooted and came back to the same contacts or mail screen. I have tried several times with either button with no success. I did try and update it to WM6 which did process but still same screen.

Sometimes it will start and go through the start up fine then the power button will flash then goes dead restart it and it says memory error push contacts and all wil be lost.

What do you think is it a lost cause if so I will quit trying.

Thank You
Erik

Okay, got to WM5 A01 with the SD card flash upgrade. I am unable to use the ROM updates due to operating system on both my computers. I have looked thrpough the forum for WM5 A02 Sd update file with no success. Maybe I missed it but I went through several times.

Is it possible to go to WM6 A01 from WM5 A01? Or is there a file location to get the SD card upgrade for WM5 A02?

So in order to update i need to download Dell Axim X50v WM6 A01 ROM than:
1) Unpack files from archive into root of FAT32 SD-Card.
2) Insert the SD-Card into your Axim and start the SD Image Loader by Pressing Wireless + Power + Reset
3) The Image Loader will search for flash images on your SD-Card.
4) Press the action key twice, this starts the update process.
5) After the process is finished you will be asked to hard reset your device.
and that's it?
edit: also will applications for windows mobile OS 6 work?

Before I start I want to thank everyone with the great work you're doing, and how great this forum is. I've been reading a while (more or less 150+ posts) and have acquired some knowledge in the flashing area, but apparently not enough. If you don't mind, I'll tell you my story (and request for help).
As I read, I start to download some files with everything I thought it would be necessary to update my old X50v from WM2003SE to 6.5.I read that first, I have to update to A05 before I could flash to WM5, and afterward to WM6.5. I tried to use Dell's update files with no success because I had the Spanish version and the only A05 Dell’s file was in English. I start browsing for a solution until I found a HEX editor to modify the language tag of the A05 file. With all this, I finally managed to upgrade to an A05 ENGLISH version and, with the same Dell's update files, get to WM5 (14957.2.3.1; A02 English).
After this, I've been trying to update to WM6.1 and/or WM6.5 without success. The problem is at the SD Image Update (I've got the A02 version) part. After formatting my Kingston 1 GB SD card in FAT32, place the files (many versions and types I've tested), and entered to the Boot Loader (Wireless, Power, Reset), each and every single time I've got the same image: a white screen with a blue stripe on top with a "SD Image Update A02" white label in it, without the option of choosing or selecting or even moving a thing, except doing a Hard Reset and go back to WM5. I've tried, as I said before, many versions, and types of files with nothing more but a headache and a white screen.
So, this is my story, stuck in this step, with an English WM5 and frustrated at not being able to update successfully. I beg for your help and support to fix this or find the problem, so I can finally achieve a "new" X50v WM6.5 PPC.
Thank you in advance.

Please do not install full backup from A02 RC1 version! Backup only PIM data.

What exactly does this mean? I was able to update to wm 6.0 but I am unsure as what to do with the files that have this caution to it. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm hoping someone can help me. I read the thread and believe I didn't do anything wrong. I do have an x50v currently running WM2003.
During the first step, I was able to start the SD image loader fine and update the SD boot loader. My problem came when I attempted to do a power reset as instructed at the end of step 1. My Axim went dead. I tried the record-reset to no avail, but managed to get back to the SD image loader screen again after doing the wireless-power-reset thingie several times. So it didn't continue the update for me, but instead went back to step 1. I tapped the center button of the round pad to restart step 1, only this time it gets stuck on reading the SD card and I get a checksum error and it wants me to do a reset.
I've tried this several times now and can't get past the checksum error. I even tried reformatting the SD card and recopying the 4 files back to it and doing step 1 again.
Any ideas?

Can anyone help me? Right now my Axim is dead. Any way to return it to 2003 at least so I can use it again? Please see above.

Before I begin how dangerous is it to upgrade to WM6? I upgraded to WM5 A01 and I almost killed my PDA. It wouldn't boot at all. I was able to boot it in the flash mode and flash the WM5 upgrade again the right way as I screwed up because you had rename some things to NiMa_..., etc. and I renamed the wrong files. I don't feel like scrolling threw all 150 or so pages of this thread to find out if this has been answered, but I will try most of it. Thanks.

If it's dead, it's dead. Unless you can boot back into the SD flash thing, your screwed. Make sure the battery is charged I did the same thing with Windows Mobile 5 A01, but I was able to install, I figured out how while I was in school. The first thing I actually learned there. I did that about a week ago. Also if you can boot in the SD flash try find out ROM it loaded on it. If you can find that out you may need to rename the files to boot from. At the very least if you can boot into the SD flash, don't jump right into it find someone or another guide with in depth instructions. As for downgrading I'm not sure, but it's the same type of process.

Okay right now I've basically said screw it, how do I do the WM5 A01 update to A02 via the AximUpdate file. I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 (Windows 7 basically) and when I run it, it goes to the USB thing on my Dell Axim's screen and it says there is problem with the program and it needs to close, etc. It disconnects from Sync when it restarts too. I tried this about a week ago with the A01 rom I had the same type of issue with Windows XP. It said it couldn't flash the rom or something, and Windows Update came up asking to look for a driver. Unfortunately in that week my Windows XP got corrupted. I'll reinstall it if I have to, but can I do it with what I have right now? Any instructions? Also when I did this it didn't erase all of my data. It reset the clock back to July 01, 2005. Sorry if this has been asked so many times, I'm new to the forums and I'm digging through the 156 pages now to see if I can find anything.

I just purchased this x50v unit and I like it. It has windows 2003, and so I followed MagLites instructions perfectly for this version. After reset the screen simply reads across the top " SD Image Update A01" nothing else occurs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I ran the sequence 3 times now reformatting the card each time. Still THIS.

Thank again.

Found this on the way...it works. Read carefully...I'm getting ready to install WM6 RC2 now.

TUTORIAL: The long awaited solution on how to use the SD Image Loader for flashing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, this is finally the solution to how the mysterious SD Image Loader is used.

This tutorial has been tested with the X50v, but I suppose it will work with any X50 or X51.

DISCLAIMER: I do not take any responsibility for any damage caused to your devices.
This tutorial is only intended for advanced users.

In this tutorial I am going to mention how to use the Loader to reflash your device, a tutorial on how to build your own flash images from a ROM-Image will be posted later.

First I'd like to mention some Basics. The most important thing is to understand, how the Axim's ROM content is built up.
It consists of the bootloader, which is similar to the BIOS in a desktop computer, of the Operating System and of the Built-In Storage in exactly that order.
Currently there are 2 different bootloaders, one for Windows Mobile 2003 and one for Windows Mobile 5. A Windows Mobile 2003 bootloader cannot boot Windows Mobile 5 and vice versa. The bootloader is language independent. As for the OSes there are quite a lot of different images, differing in OS Version, language and revision.

So what do you have to do to flash your Axim with the OS version you like?

First of all you will have to ensure that you have the correct bootloader on your device. After that you can install the OS you like.

If you do not want to change the type of OS (Windows Mobile 2003 or Windows Mobile 5) you do not have to change anything regarding the bootloader.

For this you will need a bootloader image and the corresponding CRC File, which contains a checksum, to make sure the file has been copied to your device correctly.

The filename of the images have to be of the following format: [Prefix] _ [Imagetype] _ [Revision] _ [Description].nb0

I'd like to explain the different elements of the filename the Image Loader expects:

Prefix: Depends on which Bootloader is CURRENTLY installed on your device. For the WM2003 bootloader it has to be DiMa, for the WM5 bootloader it has to be WM50.

Imagetype: Tells the Image Loader which area of the Rom you would like to refresh, for the bootloader it has to be B, for the OS it has to be K.

Revision: The Revision of the image, has to be either A00 (Official Release), or X00 (Developer Release) whereas 00 stands for any numeric digits. The revision can be anything, it is not important for the flashing process.

Description: Anything you like, e.g. X50v_WM2K5_ENG

Some examples for valid filenames:

DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0 --> Bootloader image, to be installed on a device currently running the Windows Mobile 2003 bootloader, if the device is currently running the Windows Mobile 5 bootloader the filename had to be WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0

WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0 --> Windows Mobile 2005 OS image, Revision A01

As for the corresponding CRC file the filenames would be DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc and WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc

It is important that you always install the correct bootloader before installing the OS Image.

Now lets assume you'd like to update your device from Windows Mobile 2003 to Windows Mobile 5:

1. Copy the Windows Mobile 5 OS Image and the corresponding CRC File to a FAT32 formatted SD-Card (Valid Filename for example WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0)
2. Copy the Windows Mobile 5 Bootloader and the corresponding CRC File to a FAT32 formatted SD-Card (Valid Filename for example DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0)
3. Insert the SD-Card into your Axim and start the SD Image Loader by Pressing Wireless + Power + Reset
4. The Image Loader will search for flash images on your SD-Card, as there is still the Windows Mobile 2003 Bootloader on your device it will only look for files beginning with "DiMa" and therefore will only display the bootloader image.
5. Press the action key twice, this starts the update process. DANGER: If this process fails your device will be a 300$ paperweight...
6. After the process is finished (takes only a few seconds) you will be asked to hard reset your system. Ignore this message and press Wireless + Power + Reset again.
7. The Image Loader will search for flash images on your SD-Card, as there is now the Windows Mobile 5 Bootloader on your device it will only look for files beginning with "WM50" and therefore will only display the OS image.
8. Press the action key twice, this starts the update process.
9. After the process is finished you will be asked to hard reset your device. Follow this instruction and wait for the OS to load. That's all.

I followed the procedure to update my unit to WM5 A01. I also started with WM 2003 A05. I renamed the 2 files and then copied all 4 to the SD card, did wifi-on-reset and got to the bootloader screen. I pressed the center button twice and it asked for a hard reset. Right after doing the power-reset, My unit went dead. Only the power button is lit in the cradle. When I take it off the cradle, its totally dead. Is there any help or hope?

I had the same problem, but the good news is it's fixable. Instead of trying to do a hard reset you need to go back into SD image loader by pushing power+wireless+reset.

Try this: POWER + RECORD + RESET to enter diagnostic menu. Once in the menu try POWER + WIRELESS + RESET ot enter SD loader.

Went from PC 2003 to the latest WM6 ROM listed here. The rocky bit was getting WM5 installed first since the referenced methods did not work for me. I posted the saga to my own site at tudza.com

After 2 days of searching through 4 year old posts and links (some of which no longer exist) I can say that following directions doesn't always work.

If something is screwed up in your boot loader, it is easier to buy another X50v.
If you follow directions, you still may be screwed because there are other things you should know that are not included in the "complete tutorial"..

Some of these are:
1. To get to the boot loader screen, you must hold "wireless" button and "power" button and press the reset button in the back and CONTINUE to hold the wireless and power button until the screen comes on. If it doesn't, release your monkey kung fu grip and try it again. My X50v is a doorstop, but it will go to the boot loader screen.
2. Know what boot loader you have and make a copy of it, using the methods described earlier in this thread.
3. It is not 100% going to work. You take a chance, like I did in turning your semi-functioning slow-@ss PDA into a doorstop or a faster running machine with more capabilities. Ever been to Vegas? How did you do?
4. The "helpers" here are under no obligation whatsoever to help you.
5. Dell dropped PDAs.
6. Any information you seek to turn your brick into a functioning machine again will be referred to on a link with a 404 message.
7. All of the people who had similar problems will refer to a thread that doesn't apply to your PDA.
8. Somewhere along the line, you did something wrong. I know, because my axim is dead, but some upgraded without a hitch. Welcome to the WTF club.
9. Don't blame the guys here if it bricks, these guys are awesome. Blame Dell.
10. Nobody can unbrick a brick, but they will be glad to send you down the "yellow brick road" and you will spend days reading semi related material that does not help you.

In conclusion: Those that did the same thing that you did and upgraded without a problem will think you are a moron and may treat you as such. Do not let it get to you. Apparently you were not holding your mouth right when you pressed the reset button. I would love to be able to tell you how to do it, but mine failed so I can only tell you how not to do it. Do not blame the posters. They were only trying to help.
Personally, I loved the Dell PDAs and I enjoyed all of them I owned including the one that upgraded without a hitch but was stolen by corrupt Mexican police.
You can upgrade and risk brickdom, you can marry a stripper, if you are a stripper, you can marry me. Just don't bet the farm on the success of these endeavors.
I hope this helps the readers of bricked X50v PDAs. If not, I recommend a modest quantity of Bourbon.

I am trying to update my wm2003 A03 rom to A05 so I can then update to Wm6.1 on my Axim x50v. I know this is an old thread but I am hoping somebody can help me. For some reason when I try to use the utility that I download from dells website to update to the A05 rom am having a problem. I connect to active sync 4.5 on a computer with win xp sp3. Then I run the utility but the minute it starts to update my x50v resets and then the soft has and error message. I tried this on a another computer also running same operating system and got same error. Does anyone know how to fix this?
