Actually there is a workaround, as I keep my phone plugged in charging on my nightstand. It seems like the problem is only when the phone is in standby.

Go into Settings->System->Power->Advanced and uncheck the option for On External Power "Turn off device if not used for". This will keep the phone on while plugged in and you should still get your alarms (I do). Just remember not to put the phone in standby with the power button before placing on the charger. Hope this helps.

When you do this, the LCD backlight will be turned off after the a while, but the LCD itself is still on.
