Select network by application?

I have an AT&T 8525 and I don't use it very often. The battery life is very poor when I am at home with the 3G speeds. I have noticed, when traveling, that the battery life is better when on the EDGE network. Is there a way to have the phone use different networks based on application? For example, for e-mail syncing, use the EDGE network but for web browsing or Internet Connection Sharing, use UMTS?
