flashed it with HP's flashing utility, no battery drain problems here either

Battery works fine, way better as with WM5.

This morning I had problems connecting to WPA-PSK using the Odyssey client again. Maybe the client does not have any impact on the WPA-PSK issues we see.

I will retry bootloader later today. Its just wierd that i am having this problem with the battery. A month ago I found the WM5 update did the same thing but drained the battery faster flashed it back to stock rom and all was fine. OK thanks for the feedback.

If someone can post a link of the Rom they are using I will give it a try. Thanks Bill

I does not have a problem on battery drain.
I tested it more than 1 week.

My suggest is re-flash by using BootLoader.

I also have no problem with battery drain.
I used Bootloader flashing method.

same here used bootloader and no problems with battery drain.

After an hour of playing, I managed to get mine to connect once, just the once. A soft reset - and now it won't connect again :(
tried it for the first time and it works very good but after a reset it does not work any more. Returned to WEP which works fine.
so far so good no other problems noted keep up the good work kozhura

Kozhura,

Are there any updates when you plan on releasing a new version ? There still are problems, and one of the most inportant thing I need is the Exchange activesync problem. I did plan on sending you some cash on this but, I am about to go back to WM5 because of this issue (I need it to work, it did work fine in your WM5 release).

Drop us an idea if you have anything in the works....

THANKS !!

Kozhura,

I have to congratulate you on WM6, I've now been using it for 24hrs and it is by far the best operating system I have used on any PDA. I only have the WPA-PSK problem - the rest seems to work perfectly. Please keep up the excellent work!:D :D :D :D

Thanks...Nimbus265

Thank you kozhura for this fantastic release.

Using the latest Release 3, I have found a bluetooth bug:

Bluetooth audio does not work. I have three bluetooth devices, one GPS receiver, which is working fine, and two stereo headsets. Both of the headsets won't connect, the system can find them, pair them, but upon connection, it simply fails. The headsets were working fine with WM5.

hi,

been using v3 rom now for over a week with no real issues apart from those already discussed - Wifi. I have not had any issues with battery drain.

However over the last 2 days, the device has soft reset itself a few times. The only change that i have made is to install Sprite backup. I will monitor this; if it continues i will uninstall sprite and see if it resolves the issue.

Did notice some "compaction" taking place the other day, however it was only using 50% of the processors time and was much more usable than WM5.

It is probably worth installing HitchHicker and trying various configurations as i managed to get mine to work doing exactly that

It's working really great, but please allow to ask, how to change paging pool size. i know how to do with your wm5-relase before 08-15 (address in binary), but of course the position changed with new release and i looked for a general solution, but couldn't find one in forum.
Could anyone tell please?

Another possible bug:

Somehow hardware buttons do not work anymore. I don't recall doing anything wrong but they simply won't work anymore, not even the ON/OFF power button.

Meanwhile I'm reverting back to WM5, but I will try newer releases when they come out. :)

What does mean RAM memory has been up ???

I can see the same memory I have actualy on my HX4700 with WM6 "final edition" (the first) : 57.81 MB total for program

Any hope about the word completion ? I think many users need it to write quikly.

thanks for keeping working on uprading WM6, you are giving a new life to our hx4700.

kozhura,

can u upload the new aku with 8mb page pool? :)

I don't think that it is needed to add emphasis to your words by making them bold :D

From what I understand it does not offer any real improvement going to a 8mb page pool with WM6 on the4700 for the majority of users in their typical use. I am sure that Kozhura will be able to give a much better answer than I can :)

I have read some mixed responses from people after the RAM upgrade. Ranging from...

'There is almost no difference in the PDA's performance'

to

'Wow this is almost a completely new unit'

So YMMV on the 'upgrade' depending on the depth of your wallet, your expectations and how you use your PDA now.

Make a trip over to...

http://forum.brighthand.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1247

and have a search around and read of those that have had the RAM upgrade to see if it fits your needs and expectations.

Myself, I consider it expensive for what it would offer me.....

They are doing it in Taiwan for that about usd$50 to usd$65!! Depending on the shop you goto..

If it can be done for that price in Taiwan, and you are sure about the validity of what you are getting then what are you waiting for...? :D

As long as you are sure that you are getting the equivalent of what PocketPCtechs can offer. :)

Still have a trawl through the mentioned forums as it does depend on how you use your PDA as to whether it would make a worthwhile difference.

The new release .0.7.0 Release 1 has the same problem. May You check also this problem Kozhura ?

Many thanks for Your job

My device doesn't have this bug. So I think it doesn't affect from Kozhura ROM

I think so too, same with "Windows Live" - is there no possibility to install it on your own? i like the way kozhura goes - not too much stuff in rom. the only thing i miss, is WPA-TKIP

Could you maybe tell us how you edit those Roms. To show us how much work it is and people understand maybe more about it. I am very curious how you did it. Could we maybe help you to translate it in our original language of our country.

Hi Kozhura, I have a problem with the WM6 Firmware and Activesync with exchange server.
With your Firmware WM5 no problem to connect at my Activesync server of my company where i work.
With WM6 Activesync give me this error : 0x80072f06

Google search and :
You have an incorrect SSL certificate common name in the Host Name field. For example, you may have entered www.server.com, when the common name on the certificate is actually a different URL. Make sure the server name is entered correctly.

All parameters are correct and the second iPaq 4700 with Kozhura WM5 works. I have also a HTC Hermes with WM6 and there all works correct !

What is wrong in WM6 Kozhura ?

Any idea ?

Best regards
Gabriele

P.S. You made a very good job ! Respect

Kozhura, Thanks for your great works.
We can wait, so let's take care about your health.

I tried a Toshiba 4GB SDHC on last Sat, but the new ROM still cannot detect it.

Tried to low the newest WM6 version of CE-Star (A Chinese Fontlink Program), but system hanged. I'm not sure it is because of ROM problem (nls) or software problem. However, it still work normally with the WM5 version of CE-Star.

The Power button is not sensitive as before, now I need to waiting 1-2 sec to shut down my 4700. However, it can shut down immediately original with other your WM5/6 ROMs.

Hi Dave,

Kozhura is probably going to be too busy fixing the WM6 ROM to reply, so I'll try to help you.

It sounds to me like you are renaming the Kozhura ROM and then trying to use the HP upgrade program. If so, try using a bootloader program like the one here:

http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=243984

It should solve your problem. I'm running Win XP, but this version is supposed to work with Vista with the correct drivers (details in link). I find that the first time I try programming a new ROM, the bootloader program may stop or not work. But it always works at the second attempt. It's recommended you do a "clean" reset after programming is complete (press CONTACTS + MESSAGING, then press CALENDAR when asked) - I find I have to repeat that a few times as well to get it to work.

Good luck :)

I flashed my hx4700 with the last release of wm6, installed CE-star 28 for support of chinese and japanese. Installation was OK. But :
EBpocket (the most important program for me) doesn't work. it says something like : an important component can't be launched or not enough memory. check your memory to close programs that can't close by themselves.
Tomtom 6.2 couldn't be launched.

Agree with you. I have the same problem after flash. Somehow I guess it's due to the NOR flash (pls correct me if i'm wrong) which 4700 uses. Anyway I suppose we need to put as little as possible files in storage space to avoid the "re-write" operation and in this way we could avoid 100% CPU on filesys.exe. Another possible solution is to enlarge the paging pool from 4.8M to 8M (64M RAM).

Unfortunatelly I still have to put 20+M files in storage space and sometimes have to wait until the filesys.exe completes. The filesys patch (v6.3) doesn't work on my device....

Anybody have better idea?

you're correct but we'd better put some files into storage, i.e. fonts, resco picture viewer, resco file explorer, bugme.... it makes the possibility to swap the sd or CF cards.

BTW, for me the chinese support and input are must, and I cannot imagine I put them on SD....

Its hardware mate, aint gonna be fixed 100% via romupgrade, its because of how WM5/WM6 handles the RAM since the slowpoke NOR flash is being used as RAM. But you can minimize the compaction just by making your program memory free as much as possible. If not completely free at least minimal.

I'm not sure whether SDHC will ever work on hx4700. It seems that SDHC does not only rely on the sotfware implementaion (the SD driver) but also on hardware. I use "normal" 4GB Transcend SD card, because I tried SDHC on WM5 on my hx4700 and it didn't work for me :(

For details You can take a look at http://www.hjreggel.net/cardspeed/special-sd.html. It is quite old, but good summary of the SD size issue. I found it on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card), where I also found this:
Devices that do not specifically support SDHC do not recognize SDHC memory cards

I say this respectfully that I have tried both upgrades and they are quirky at best. I get speed one minute and lag the next. Cannot install alot of my programs that I need.
If you come up with one that runs stable I am willing to send you a couple of hundred dollars for it. I don't expect anything free. Its great that someone is attempting to help us hx4700 diehards. I think this is still one of the best PPC today. Its a shame HP got a hold of it and let it go!

Timtoolman,

I am always fearful of trying a rom upgrade but actually did it three times over the weekend. I started with the first upgrade and the change in speed from 5.3 to WM 6+ was truly amazing. I then tried the latest and found like everybody else that a lot of programs would not operate so switched back to the first version. and have found that it runs perfectly.

I am just glad that I changed from 5.3 to this rom.

Are you saying you switch back to the first version of wm 6? I am using the latest update from here and I get great speed on one tap and great delay on the next. Plus I have right now at least 5 programs that don't work with this upgrade and quite trying. I see there is two versions of wm 6 on here if you tell me the first one runs better I'll give it a shot.
No Ty not talking about certified, take a look back through this thread and tell me it is running fine. I appreciate the effort but I need something that works for me. That runs the programs I need for day to day.

Tim

PS by the way its not that I am fearful, I just am willing to admit that things are as they are. I do not fear updating the Rom.

I was playing a little with the WPA-TKIP problem, and I found out, that my wifi access point logs "authentication failed", when I try to connect using WPA-TKIP. I suspect, that maybe for some reason the WPA-TKIP key is stored/read incorrectly in/from registry, therefore causing authentication failure.

I would like to still work a little bit more on this issue, but I have no experience with debugging on PPC.

Therefore a question: does anyone know what tools I could use on PPC to try to debug such a problem?

No the modpp will not work on this rom since it points to the same block as that of WM5 which does not exist anymore in WM6. This rom is already fast and the increase in speed you'll get in increasing your pagepool with this rom is not that significant. But if youre still willing to give it a go you can do it manually through hex editing.

I don't find a reason for that to happen! Do yo mean that you installed:
- first WM6 by Kozhura
- second WM6 by Kozhura
- made a backup
- reflashed first by Kozhura
- restored backup

and everything went better?

Xerxers
11th September 2007, 05:44 PM
Yes, that is what I did almost I did not back up the second WM 6.0 but used a backup created before I changed to WM 6.0

BUT I did originally have 5.3 which in hindsight was just SO slow.

The steps I did were load the first WM6 ie fix3 last Thu and after 5.3 that was just so fast and everything did work perfectly then I saw over the weekend that there was a newer version so I tried that.

Then I tried to load Spb Pocket Plus and that would not load. I then did a hard reset and tried loading again but all to no avail. I then used Sprite restore and that loaded everything BUT Spb Pocket Plus.....very strange.

I then downloaded the original WM 6.0 fix3 this last Sun and used Sprite to restore and that is what I have been using since. The only slow down I have is when Active sync is synching and i am trying to use an apps.

I can not believe the performance difference in my hx4700 since I installed the kozhura wm6 build.
I have tested a number of SPB apps (plus, diary, weather, backup & time) all worked well. I had installed them in system memory (not SD card) and feel that performance decreased.
Installed Resco utility pack no problems.

My only issue to date is with Exchange Server; I was able to sync through wifi, using webmail access and appropriate security cert, under WM5. Since the upgrade cannot connect to exchange server either through wifi, or activesync usb. I looked around on the web, saw nothing verifiable, but saw someone said that wm6 required Exchange 2007 for webmail access, not sure if this is true. Hopefully this is not true and can be corrected, let me know if you need anyone to test.

For now I will use the desktop mail sync (through outlook mail) and not get mail remotely, I think the performance difference is worth the inconvenience.

Thanks for showing HP how to do it RIGHT !!!

Timtoolman,

Good to hear that you are going to give it a try.

I sort of have a phillosophy that is it isn'y broken don't fix it. But in this case I was so wrong. I put off doing the upgrade for months and then I became just so ticked with the slowness of my hx4700 that I decided to try. Nothing ventured nothing gained. I am now so glad that i did load this ROM as my hx4700 now runs very fast.

Have you been over to Brighthand and had a look at the Forum there that discusses upgrading the ROM? If not would suggest you have a look to further confirm my thoughts.

The only other thing is to be patient when going through the ROM upload as it does take some time!!!!!!

let me know what happens.

I've tried to read as many of the 37 pages of this thread as possible.

Here is the issue I'm having now that I've upgraded my 4700 from 2003 to WM6.

When the unit goes to sleep, it often will not wake up, despite repeated pressing of the power button. Reseting the unit will turn it on, but the screen is dark (the backlight is not on). The only thing that will work is putting it in the charging cradle - that fixes it.

I've tried this with two different batteries, and I get the same result.

Any thoughts?

Normally, you should presse the Power button a long time "2 seconds" to lignt the screen.

@ kszarek:

I guess a lot of us are curious how you installed SPB pocket plus, since I've read a lot of complaints that it was impossible to install it due to errors during installation. Can you please specify which ROM version you're using and which version of SPB Pocket plus you installed?

I have the latest ROM installed ( 0.7.0 I thought it was) and tried to install SPB pocket plus 3.20

I upgraded to 5.2.1908 0.7.0 but I can not install programs to memery, but I can copy data to that.
Other, if I installed programs to memory then it can not run.
WHY??????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????
I go back 5.2.1236 fix3, this rom is good, but I can not connect with Windows Mobile Device Center in Vista.
Please, help me.
Cheers.

Here's one bug i just found.

Accessing Navpoint through the contacts button (long press) brings this error "Error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename." So I tried accessing Navpoint mode from the windows directory and lo, that annoying "memory Unavailable" pops up. And yes i already did a hard reset and a reflash as well. Im going back to WM6 3.2.

I finally replaced my windows mobile 5 with mobile 6 thanks to help on here and a nice piece of software that used the bootloader screen. Does anyone have any problems with backup battery failing on the 4700 pda, i think i may need to replace it as its saying its lost its charge, even after charging. cheers

dave

I have also the same problem with this backup battery, I have the feeling that it is not charged. When I look into the power properties I see that the main battery is charging ("AC Charging") but this is not the case with the backup battery. I don't know if it has something to do with WM6, but after installing WM6 I got this problem.

I have 2003 SE on my device at the moment. One of the biggest problems I have is turning on both radios (and sometimes just Bluetooth in general) if I have been using my device allot. It is a well know fact that this is all due to memory stomping because the drivers are limited to a particular space, but apps can use this space up.

My question is is WM6 eliminates all this nonsense and has a better memory system that allows the radios to function correctly.

Thanks for your answer(s) in advance!!1

This is a nice stable ROM, no issues so far except WPA-TKIP associates, but no IP address assigned to mobile, must be something broken related to shared key. Anyone else found this?

I experienced that issue in the past. Now, if you just can't turn on BT it's because you have not much RAM available. Then you go to Settings->Memory and stop some app. If you try again, the BT turns on, not like in WM2003, that was insisting on making you reset the device once it says you have not enough memory.

I definitely recommend WM6 for you.

I comfirm that! That problem dissapiered since WM5 upgrade from HP. (I use bluetooth GPS and I was very unhappy with memory issue on WM2003SE)

Hi I'm new to this forum, I would like to upgrade my iPAQ 4700 from Windows Mobile 2003 to WM5 or WM6 which is the best to go for. Should I go to WM5 first and then to WM6? How do I go about doing this? I think I understand a boot loader is required. where do I find the ROM images? Is there some software for backing up my existing ROM? Are there different language versions of WM5 & 6 (UK)

I would upgrade to the latest wm5 from kozhura it is alot better than wm5 that hp put out. The latest wm6 is still in testing stage and has some problems that you can read about in this forum. I am currently running kozhura's wm5 with a 8mb pagefile and it is running very fast and stable. Look on this forum for the latest version of the wm5 rom and bootloader information.

make sure you read/printout the instructions. Follow them exactly and you will have no issues.

Before I upgrade to VM6 how can I backup my current ROM?

I would quote a post of LIminwei from pxdxa :

"WM5 SD backup is complicated

1. a WM5-installed-already HX4700 + a bigger SD than 256MB

2. install activesync 3.8 (remove 4.2 or 4.5B2, including registry)
romupdate.exe cannot recognize 4.2 or 4.5B2
(in fact, in my case the 4.5 with win xp works well)

3. use winhex to fill the SD with 00

4. put the SD into HX4700 but donnot format it

5. On PC: ctrl + alt + del to turn off wcescomm.exe

6. contac + itask + power + reset > 5 secs to make HX4700 into serial mode

7. put serial HX4700 into cradle and serial change to USB with AC power

8. run romupdate.exe (you can download it on pxdxa)
choose \\.\wceusbsh001
push enter until you see the
USB> (not necessarily, but it dosen't always matter)

then key in d2s
This will make a WM5 SD backup.

when you want to reflash your HX4700
put the SD into HX4700 and donnot format it
contac + itask + power + reset > 5 secs to make HX4700 into serial mode (and it will prompt to to download from SD card)
then push power button to start to reflash the ROM"

Has somebody been able to connect to the WM6 upgraded HX4700 using Device Security Manager? I couldnt. It always gives me "querying device configuration....".

You can download the Device Security Managar from here.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7e92628c-d587-47e0-908b-09fee6ea517a&DisplayLang=en

I would like to know if this ROM has some kind of application lock or security lock that wouldnt allow me to add or remove certificates. Removing the lock might solve the Exchange problem.

I love the wm6 upgrade, im glad the hx4700 has been able to keep evolving after all these years :)

I used to be able to connect to my bluetooth headphones for high quality sound when i had WM5, now i can only connect to them in regular quality sound as regular hands free instead of high quality. I also noticed in registry there is no a2dp section

We still have a2dp support right?

Also, since I mentioned registry, we might want to incorporate this setting

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Widcomm\BtConfig\UserI nterface]
DWORD Name: TrayIcon
Value: 1

It puts the bluetooth icon next to the wifi icon in the bottom tray. When i used wm5 on the hx4700 it had that registry key. I found it kind of convenient. Dont know about you guys

Also, does anyone have a tricked out 4705 and an Advantage? Could you comment on one vs the other using them purely as a PDA.

I agree, TCPMP is the greatest. I remember when it used to be called betaplayer ^^

The only thing pocket wmp is good for is playing music, but it eats so much resources its pointless

Not much of a 'howto' but a sort of 'tips'...

Download this thing: http://rapidshare.com/files/56341299/hx4700_eng_splash_change.zip.html

1) Change splash1.png, splash2.png in this archive to whatever you like (if you want of course), but splash2.png must be 240x320, and splash1.png must be 480x640. (splash2.png will be shown FIRST, and splash1.png - second when device is booting).
2) Run splash_create.bat. There must appear a file named S_DATA exactly 768000 bytes in size. (if not - well, something went wrong)
3) Get a last kozhura's .nbf flash file (maybe other flashes will also be appropriate even ENG wm5's)
4) Run splash_write.bat d:\dev\hx\hx4700_wm6_flash.nbf (just change path and filename of .nbf to your one)
5) Ok ... But - now - I don't know how this modified .nbf can be flashed with a standard flasher (because never used such, I'm flashing with mtty program). This you must figure by yourself (or use mtty flashing method).

PS: I think kozhura will change splash screens in his next ROM version, so if you will be unable to do it yourself, then just wait

Like other posting here I have had issues with the Stero headset.

One of the earlier wm5 ROMs required a cab file install called _QwertY__Widcomm_Act.cab to fix the stereo headset issue. I applied this cab file to WM6 after reading an earlier post. Worked perfectly on img-49213-WM6_4700_ENG0_32_FIXED_FINAL.rar and version 0.7.0 PreRelease 1 version of WM6.

The cab file was linked in the WM5 posts.

Could someone make me a step by step instruction, how I can install the WM6-ROM on my device (HP iPAQ Hx4700, WM2003SE 1.1, 128 MB ROM upgrade, german ROM)

Hi,

The method to do a hard reset has change from WM2003 to WM5 and WM6 :

Hello Thomas,

After the upgrade you must do an hard reset, follow these instructions:
Press the contacts and mail button and then do a soft reset.

After that the boot screen will popup with this message:To perform a clean reset which will clear all data in memory press the calendar button.

Hopely for you it will work now.

The ROM completly replaces the one that the device has, no matter what ROM you have installed! So you don't need to have any specific version to flash ;) at least if you flash with Chris' hx4700 BootLoader.

Hello,

after a clearing-reset (and 2.5 hours waiting) the ROM works. :)

And all tested functions works, except WiFi with WPA-PSK/TKIP.

Is there a reason for those problem?

@ tpcol: just read through this thread, it's a well know problem for quite some time. Maybe the new release will fix that, otherwise flash it back to AKU 3.5.2.

There was note on the site that 4pda.ru will be not available due to maintenance probably till tomorrow and kozhura said most likely he will get back working on the new flash only after that as he is busy at work.

For the A2DP, you can download the Bluetooth Patch CAB made by QWERTY. I can use my BT stereo handfree to listen FLAC (by TCPMP) perfectly.

I have converted my hx4700 to the FIX3 version.
Two issues
1. WPA-PSK which will not work.
If I do not put my key in, I get an immediate warning that the key is not correct, so it is obviously half working.
In the screen after setting the shared key, there is greyed out tick in the box to use IEEE 802.1x network access control. Previously when I used WM2003SE that was not ticked. Could this be the problem?

2. I cannot get .net compact framework 2.0 to load. It claims out of memory. I have tried all 3 versions from teh original through the two SPs.

A question:
Is there any way to change the awful colour scheme? I find that the contrast of the text against background is often so poor as to make it unreasable - especialy in boxes or drop-downs that are already filled.

Overall it seems stable enough, if quite slow in comparison to WM2003SE. The slowness is in the opening of settings or programs, but not during hteir operation, Its quite weird. I particularly like the additional memory available to storage and programs - the old filestore never did anything for me - that's whaat SD cards are for...

Howdy Kozhura...
I'm using the 0.7.0.RC version it's far more better than 0.3.2 if it comes to speed, either no stucking of my device but yet half of my programs cannot be installed. Plz tell us when u plan to give us a new release cause i'm thinking of returning to 0.3.3 <- all progs installed with no probs.
