A few days ago, I tried the change that somebody mentioned: to change the memory pool to 0.

I did it and I experienced greater results. The interface is more responsible.

I do recommend it. You will see the difference ;)

If u people use 0 MB page pool, dont use Windows Media Player.

Why?

WMP eats all ur memory, use instead of it Pocket Music Player or\and TCMP.

I play music and movies wit no problems at all.

i dont know why 0 mb page pool is not the standard! Could somebory explain me?

Is there a lobby against 0Mb page pool!? :P

I have test the FIXE 4 with PP 4.8Mo et PP0 Mo.
I never user the SPB apps but the hx4700 have battery failure

I decide to go back with the FIXE 3 PP4.8 and adding the Qwerty fixe namualy.
Actualy : No battery drain and more speed.

I'm wainting for a potentialy fix5 and some news of the brick of ours developper.

how can i do that???

I want to fix it to :)

I flashed my hx4700 to WM6 and ik works ok. But when I reboot I see a version 2.01 in de low right corner. I read there also was a 2.04 version.
Where can I download this version and what is the difference?

After I try to search from google about"wm6+battery drain", someone experience about software conflict that burn out power battery.
Someone mention SPB diary conflict? ,so I try by un-install it out and also use memmaid to disable the startup service of SPB (spb finance, spb insight, spb time, spb traveller...)
After a night long ,the battery can be keep full potential!
Now,the perfect HP 4700+wm6 Khozura,is coming both speed and power.
If you got this problems too, try it!

Ummm... so you're saying the solution is not to use SPB Diary, at all?

If that's not what you meant, perhaps you could be more specific, i.e. a procedure with clearly explained steps to follow? It's hard to "try it" if we still don't know what "it" is.

Hi all,

Pdaviet has a new rom out. ROM_v2.01.16_B18538 I'm just getting ready to try it out. Using Mtty I just backed up my kozhura v4 rom to sd but is there a way to backup the rom to a file on to the computer. I'd like to try the 0MB pagepool on my kozhura v4 rom but not have to reload everthing. I heven't been too impressed with the pdaviet roms so far, but for testing sake what can you do. Why would you expect a Today plugin that is quite likely specific in some way to an HTC model to install much less work on a unit that is significantly different? You have more courage - and time to kill? - than I do....

not only SPB diary ,but also any programs that I install in main memory, they consume the bacground battery.
So , now ,after move all software to SD card , it stop the drain of battery.

Not sure but I believe DisplaySwitch may be a function of psShutXP. The PDAVIET site would be more useful if I could read Vietnamese. You can always use Vivi's 4700 kitchen to remove the additional programs you don't want.

You must have done something incorrectly or unexpected, because I had Contacts at first when I installed this. It was moot for me, though, because Pocket Informant quickly got installed to replace its function (and replace it, it does, I think I'd have to uninstall PI to get back the original Contacts now).

Programs I've installed with no problems so far:
sktools, resco explorer, tweaks2k2, tcpmp, core player, adobe reader, wififofum, pocket grandmaster, delorme street atlas, newsbreak, opera, google navigator, pocket RAR, resco photo, styletap, kanji gym, multiIE, SmallMenu, VitoAstroNavigator, TomeReader, ozVGA, task manager 2.7

OzVGA seems to work fine on build 4 with everything except Excel and Word Mobile. Returning to SE_VGA mode will let me use the Office Mobile apps, but they don't seem to like true VGA mode.

Well, display switch function is just to turn off the backlight. You may also want to use vivi kitchen to delete that stupid looking icon. You may also start cooking your ROM to add or remove components that suits your purpose. If you want to add more OEM packages, you can replace power point, word & excel with a compressed version, but with same functionality, of those programs to free up 2.4mb.

Download: Compressed Office Mobile (http://rapidshare.com/files/77243343/Office_Mobile.rar)

I'm having a strange problem with Release 4 of the ROM. Word Mobile seems to not be loading. It's when I'm attempting to load it by clicking on a Word 2003 format file. I can load Word Mobile manually, but when I try to open the file it hangs. (So either way, I can't get it to load.) PowerPoint Mobile and Excel Mobile seem to work.

Also, I tried updating to Office Mobile 6.1 and it said that I already had a later version (!). The installer aborted. I tried a completely clean install of the ROM and it didn't work any better.

(update: Feeling kinda dumb on the second thing. Looking at the "About" item on the menu of Excel Mobile, I see that it's already version 6.1 :))

Any ideas?

To all ROM cookers, you can now add more spices to your ROM by replacing original files with a compressed one. I'll continue to add more compressed files as I test other files in my device. Tnx to kozhura for the ROM and to vivi for the kitchen.

Compressed files:
Shellres.192.dll, officeres.192.dll, pptres.192.dll (http://rapidshare.com/files/77391502/compressed_dll_files.rar) - save 400 kb
Office Mobile (http://rapidshare.com/files/77243343/Office_Mobile.rar) - save 2.4 mb
Backlight.exe, Calc.exe, Navpoint.exe, notes.exe, OneNote, wmplayer, zipwiew.exe (http://rapidshare.com/files/77413552/Compressed_exe.rar) - save 1 mb

I'm guessing it could be caused by iLauncher which I'm using. I'll try to remove it and try again.

I' m using this version with my usual programs no problem .
I must focus only on the battery drain, infact i don't know if i start using new rom with full charge or not.
In the applications there is a very interesting program section with notepad,
PHM Registry Editor and .... a USB HDD with the option of read only or removable disk . I can't use it becaouse i've not the usb cable but this can be possible.
In general the pda semms to go well and fast.

PI is licensed software. I don't think we should give it away.

My Pdaviet rom still won't let TT6 auto connect to the GPS. It seems to connect and then it disconnects. So, still not perfect.

I don't get the battery drain - but I did the activesync server "mod" to make it do manual only.

IMO I prefer a clean ROM, people can always add what they want to it but at least it doesn't force others to have to accept applications that they do not want nor need.

If you are having problems with your BT and TT have you tried to make a connection to your BT GPS via the BT manager on the HX4700 and tested it for stability...? That might just help to know whether it is the version of TT that you are using or the OS / hardware that could be the problem...?

PDAviet Rom works OK with my Bluetooth HP GPS and TT6. I had to delete all hidden Bluetooth Com ports in Device Manage on my PC and create a new Actisync Connection on my 4700 to get Bluetooth AS working, but no problems that I can see. I also did the Hex edit to create a 0 Pagepool version. I am looking forward to Kozhura's Ver 5 though as his ROM's seem to contain fewer addons I don't need.

If I connect manually to my BT device, then TomTom works fine for hours.

So I think TT6 is OK - the BT device is OK. It's just something funny in how TT6 communicates with the BT driver to do it's stuff.

Only two problem I have it is that wi-fi with wpa-psk encription does not work and that sometimes it won't turn on (last problem I usualy fix by removing battery for few seconds).

Everything else working GREAT (thx kozhura).

As I se wi-fi problem is not fixed yet and see some problems with power drain i few last pages.

Two things:

1. The Pdaviet rom works OK with TT6 now. I think what happens is that after a soft reset, TT6 and/or Bluetooth "forgets" how to find the last used GPS device. Once you manually connect, run TT6 and exit it, it works OK.

2. Anyone using Ultraedit to edit their rom - be careful. I installed it and my Outlook Express stopped working (DLL error). Uninstalled UE and OE started working again. Since I use OE all the time, I need to find another binary editor. Anyone got any ideas?

This is a know problem; I read older posts and a found a simple solution: download and install Crypto4 under Windows XP; convert the .cer certificates in .pfx format choosing a password for the generation of the new .pfx certificates. Copy the new .pfx certificates into your fantastic WM6 R4 PDA and use the freeware pfximprt wince application for importing; be sure to provide the password you have choosen and your root certificates will be correctly installed !! Certificate Installation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Preface: This is not a how to on how to install a certificate properly... this is a back way.

We use WPA with self signed certs at work. I was not able to log in to our wireless network last week. Over the weekend I did some digging and reading here, particulary from one person who was able to backup from older WM and restore to this ROM.

1. First I restored my WM5 ROM and imported the Certs I needed and installed Resco Explorer/Reg Add-In (you can use the demo if you dont want to buy).

2. Look for the Certificate store here in the registry:

HKLM\Comm\Security\SystemCertificates\(Cert Store in my case: )Root\Certificates\**Certificate Thumbprint**

The thumbprint is viewable by double clicking on the cert in Windows XP/Vista. Go to the Details Tab and look at the thumbprint Field. That is the key name under Certificates in the path above. I used Resco and exported that key. Alternatively you could export the entire SystemCertificates Key.

3. Save your exported registry to a card or your windows box.

4. Flashed Khozura Rom Wm6 Fix 3 and installed Resco Explorer/Reg Add In.

5. Put the Exported Registry Key(s) back on the device.

6 If you exported only the key go to A if you exported the entire systemcertificates go to B

6A. A tap of the exported cert registry entry should prompt you to install it. You can also go to the resco registry editor and choose "Import" from the file menu.

6B. Since you exported the entire system certificates first browse to the certificate store with resco registry editor and export the entire WM6 systemcertificates key. Now Import (tap) your exported WM5 systemcertificates reg file and follow the prompts, next tap the newer WM6 systemcertificates reg file. This will yield only the differences between WM5 and WM6 allowing you to keep the newer WM6 info.

7. Press the power switch at the top to put the unit in standby. Wait about a minute then soft reset.

8. Try your WPA connection. Mine worked First thing Monday after I followed the above steps this past weekend. Your mileage may vary.

Hi hx4700 Killer

I tried this procedure. It works installing the certificate to the root.
I can see it there.

But I still cannot access my work wireless network.
It Finds the wireless network.
but fails on login.

Not sure why????

Hello all,

I just discovered the tickbox in Add/Remove is checked and everything is installing into main memory without giving me the option to load on my SD, CF or FileStore areas. These are programs I had installed in other areas so I know it isn't the installers.

Anyone know how to get the "Install programs in default location" ungreyed?

Thanks!

Not to pester on this one but it is really bothering me.

Anyone see this issue?

Should I reflash?

Thanks!

I haven't had this problem at all. A few applications actually don't give you the choice, but it doesn't sound like that is the issue. Of course the Filestore is no longer available in WM5/6 so the choices would only be main memory and memory cards.

I would backup what you have and then reflash the ROM, making sure you do a Clean Reset after.

Thanks.. I successfully import my wifi certificate doing this, but my ipaq can't connect to.
I think this is a bug in this rom version.

Wait for a new version

Hi, my first post here as I have been patiently reading through all the posts.

I am currently using the REL4 version, and I was not able to install a Chinese SIP program call CEStar. Once I install it the unit will hang and I will need to re-flash it. Does anyone have any idea how to overcome this? I have search this forum but no solution on this problem.

The REL4 ROM is good, just that I really need the Chinese SIP on the English ROM.

Thanks in advance.

use O2 Chinese Plus, or some Chinese SIP using Microsoft YaHei Font instead. Search bbs.pdafans.com for those SIP I mentioned

This was from a clean reset...

Why isn't Filestore available anymore?

Glad I upgraded my iPAQs memory!

Anyone else having the problem with their iPAQs turning on and off for no reason ever few minutes? Driving me nuts!

Look back a few posts and do the Manual Sync trick. Effectively, the trick involves creating a fake connection setting manual sync and then deleting to fool the PPC into only sync'ing when you manually connect.

The Filestor was required for WM2003 or earlier because if the battery failed, it needed a filestore area where memory would not be erased. With WM5/6 memory is persistent and isn't lost when battery fails, so Filestore isn't needed, it's actually used for program and system storage.

R4版在我机子上会不时的重启失败,虽然前一版(fx3)也会,但概率要小很多
我不太清楚R4有多少升级,但冲这一点,我还是刷了fix3版的0MB PP版

Well how long have I owned my Ipaq! - about 4 years (when they were first released),

How long have I known about this mod - about 4 days!

Just flashed my 4700 and everything is great. Amazing speed and it feels like I have a new PDA (i was going to get a new one for christmas, now there is no need).

Tomtom works well as does WIFI and Bluetooth (i have used WPA no probs) only thing I have noticed is the battery drains more, is this me or what??

You can try the Fake Server Hack, you can find it on this page http://forums.sbsh.net/index.php?showtopic=11823 (post #8) to stop the battery drain.

Have done this today (also with fix 4 now) ... hope this will work :)

I have no problems with movies on this rom with tcpmp, but i run mine from the SD card and keep the cf for programs.

Make sure you have all the codecs installed as this might be why your getting the slow downs. I use either divx or xvids too

Hi,
If u don't have the codecs installed , the movie will not run. That's for sure . But I found another way to speed up working. It was in a post way up in this thread, yet it works also for the latest build from Kozhura.

This is a copy of the original txt... can't remember who posted it, but tnx anyway ; it works great.....

QUOTED : PageFile tweak

've found that tweaking the filesys TempPath makes a huge difference to performance as long as you have a fast storage card.

It may be a fluke, but my 4700 seems loads faster now.

What to do...
create a folder (I used "\SD Card\Application Data\Volatile" because the default is "\Application Data\Volatile") on your SD card
Edit the registry - HKLM\System\Filesys - change TempPath value to point to your new folder
Power off PDA
Power on PDA
Perform Soft reset (I use reset.exe - got it from pocketpcfreewares.com)

Whether you use software to do the soft reset or not, the key is that the changes get commited to file. It may be sufficient to power off and on to do this.

Note, I've only tried this today. Up 'til now, my 4700 has been stable - it is definitely a lot snappier. I would guess that it's not a brilliant idea to remove the SD card frequently after making this change - although I have done this once and it didn't crash.

Cheers, Merry Xmas etc ...

I'm trying to get the lates RELEASE4.rar to work with Bootloader and am not having any joy. I am able to use Chris's Bootloader to flash the other rar versions, as I have even just now done to make sure that it is still working, so am wondering if there is something different that I need to do to flash the latest RELEASE4.rar

When I run the Bootloader I ask to open WM6_4700_0_7_0_RELEASE4.rar in the same folder as Bootloader (in a root directory without spaces in the name of the folder), but I get this error message:

"! C:\BootLoader\WM6_4700_0_7_0_RELEASE4.rar: No files to extract"

and I close that error window and get another error window that says:

"Error reading file C:\BootLoader\BootLoader\temp_nbf\"

After I close that window nothing else happens.

I would love to flash the latest release4 onto my hx4700. Please help if anyone has any suggestions that might help.

I'm using Vista, by the way. I have also tried downloading the rar about 4 or 5 times now in hopes that my download was corrupt, but it seems to be the same each time. I have been reading for someone having the same problem, but don't see anything yet. I would love to have some help with this.

Happy New Year from Australia,

Mark

Hello Mark
unrar the archive you downloaded and follow instructions included in the file readme.txt

Enjoy

To begin with if you want to flash your device using cradle, you have to:
1.In processes (CTRL+ALT+DEL) you must kill Wcesscom.exe
2.Then Enter in Bootloader (Contacts+iTask+Reset)
3.Put your device on usb cradle.
4.Run mtty11a.exe
5.In "Port" choose \\.\WCEUSBSH001 and click OK
6.Write command: lnb OS_WM6.nb0
7.Wait
8.Enjoy yourself :)

In step

6.Write command: lnb OS_WM6.nb0

you have to actually TYPE "lnb OS_WM6.nb0". Cut and paste WILL NOT WORK.

Good luck.

I take this opportunity to wish a happy New Year to everybody out there.

Yes, this is what I was just going to write. Thank you both for your help on this. I managed to get the pda flashed with the new rar. Great!

The other point that I wanted to share, in case it helps someone, and that might be a Vista thing, is that there was no process called "Wcesscom.exe" running. I guessed and ended "wmdc.exe" and that seems to have worked. I didn't get the process to work without ending that at any rate, so perhaps it was the right thing to do for Vista.

Thanks again for the help. I needed to know about these points in order to make this work for me.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Chris,

Tnx for the reminder....

BTW : i'd like to point to another little thingie .... about the battery-drain some of you have : before shutting down the hx4700, be sure to check if there's no more program running. I found out if I left some programs running when i shut down, there was a drain of 10% over night. Next time I checked if there were any programs running before shut off. I killed them all and next morning I had only a 1 % drain....

Now I only need to find a fix for the battery running hot while in my car.... :-)

I have the Hx4705 I have been trying to get the damn thing into bootloader mode and it doesn't seem to be working. I am pressing the top left and bottom right buttons for about 1 second then pushing and holding the reset button at the bottom of the ipaq while holding those buttons. The screen goes black and the only way to turn it back on is by pushing the reset button at the bottom again and then I have to go through the whole windows process of aligning my screen again and i'm put back onto the today screen. I am currently running
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
Version 4.21.1088 (Build 15045.2.6.0)

Does anybody know what i'm doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated in advance, and thank you for everyone's hard work on a project like this.

I upgrade my rom from original WM2003se to WM6rom ( Kozhura rom rev3 and Thai modify by ViVi)
After that I need to try many hacks and registry change to solve the long latency response and battery drain problems ( and I try a lot from this forums)
And after many trial+error ,it improve to be enough satisfy .
Until ,last 4 days ,I plan to give this to my brother,so I re-fresh(flash again) new install the same ROM and install all programs in SD card.
Surprising !! no need to chang any registry or hack ( except fake activesyn server that I routinely did it), WM6 work smooth, stable and no battery drain.
From this experience, I report to our members to notice, may be the problems may disturb only the overstep upROM from 2003se to WM6 ( If normal step from 2003se-->WM5-->WM6, may have not so much problems)
And luckily all the disturbs can solve if we try to re-flash ROM again.
This is my personaly experience and conclusion,so please re-think and try.
With best wishs and happy new year to all.

Just to let u know, my machine is also 5 years old.... Strangely enough, I had a battery drain again last week. For the first time in a month. I believe it could have something to do with the screen alignment. It was in landscape mode to have 'widescreeen-navigation' with TomTom. I put it back in portrait, and the battery held it's juice like nothing happened :-)

I believe it could have something to do with the screen alignment. It was in landscape mode to have 'widescreeen-navigation' with TomTom. I put it back in portrait, and the battery held it's juice like nothing happened :-)

I'll keep you all informed ... battery is on his way from HongKong to Belgium ...

I have had my ipaq from November 2004. The battery lasts about 3hrs now, so not sure if its fine or not. I too have ordered a new one so we'll see when that arrives I have noticed that bluetooth eats juice quickly though.

Kozhura come back! Let us know you are okay and more importantly so is your 4700!!!

Battery drain - noticed something strange. If I charge my 4700 with ipaq off, once the charge light shows full charge, I remove the charge cable and touch the touchpad I hear quiet clicks indicating pad is powered - and that with ipaq off!
If I cycle it on/off all is normal.
Could this be a reason of some reports of battery drain?

Hi kozhura and others,

I own an Hp4700 as well. I have updated to WM6 and I was playing all the weekend with it! Last night I have installed a language extender tool (for regional settings). When I soft reset it (was the 1st time I was reseting the device) it didnt boot normaly again! In the begining I get the Hp screen with the version 2.1 (red digits) and then I get another one HP screen with out the 2.1 indication and finally I get a completely white sceen and thats all!

I tried so many times to load the wm6 form the beginning but it still happens the same thing.

I dont know is this is a bug but I would apreciate if you could help me to unstuck on this situation.

Thank you again...

Hi. Make your precious 4700 into bootloader state, Kill the activesync and then Reinstall recent ROM again. I guess this process makes your pda alive. Good day!

Thanx for the info klifer. Unfortunately I have tried to load the rom bios of wm2003se that Hp provides in an exe file. But even if I install and then kill active sync the process comes up again and generally the hp utility fails when is trying to establish a connection with the device. The only flashing procedure that works for flashing the rom is the procedure that is described by kozhura in the wm6 4th edition file.

karl74 can you tell me the procedure to load wm5 or wm2003se? I just need the rom files for them to use the usb procedure that kozhura is describing. I just need rom files in *.nb0 format.

Thank you both for your immediate response.

Before the end of last year, I flashed my hx4700 over to the PDVIET ROM (v2.01.17_B20000) just to try it out. Performance-wise, it was no better than Koshuras Release 4. It did have a nifty little utility built in. However, I recently ran into a problem: It wouldn't connect with my WiFi router using WPA-Personal. I also had an easily solved issue where docking wouldn't automatically turn the unit on to start ActiveSync. For the first reason, I returned to Koshura's release 4 ROM. Now connecting to the router not only works, it's quick! ActiveSync (actually Windows Mobile Device Center) also autostarts.

With WM6 on my hx4700, I'm really not looking to upgrade until perhaps WM7 or WM8 comes out. (I wonder if WiMax will start to appear in some units as it's begun to appear in UMPC (at CES at least :))

Did you clear out everything after doing the ROM update? (Contacts,Messaging,Reset, then press Calendar). You might have some Registry left-overs that are causing the problem.

Kozhura,

I don't know what state your 4700 is in, however I'm wondering if you need to go all the way to JTAG. If you didn't kill the Stage 1 bootloader, you should be able to use the WM2003 HP ROM to restore your ipaq. From there, you could restore your WM6 ROM. Can you tell us a bit more about what you've tried, first?

Why would i want to change? Vista despite the press/common opinion is a perfectly good OS. My only gripe with it is its lack of GP compatibility, a fault which is soon to be fixed.

Hello,

I'm new here and I'am a new user of a ipaq 4700. I buy it second hands with wm 2003. I found this site and install the wm6 rom. I like the layout and thanks 4 that. But now I have a question. I am not very known with the pda so sorry if it is a stupid question.

I have installed tomtom 6 and have a tomtom bluetooth receiver. When I want to connect using bluetooth turn on it failed. The Ipaq told me to reset(something about memory) but still not works for me. When I delete the tom tom software it is possible for me to turn on the bleutooth.

what can I do, I like to use tom tom

Hi,

As far as I know, you need to pair the BT GPS with your unit. Check the BT Manager in Settings/Connections. Moreover : normally you don't need to turn on BT when you want to use TomTom. The program will do that for you, if correctly configured of course.

The Bluetooth radio failed to turn on due to insufficient driver memory available.
You must perform a normal reset before you can turn on Bluetooth radio

WODP, you reported a touch pad going crazy. My 4700 started to develop the following problem 2 weeks after installing WM6 v4.

If the start (or any) menu was displayed the cursor would continuely scroll up making selection almost impossible, device would operate slowly when this fault was occuring. I was prepared to assume a harware problem, however if I turn the device off and then back on the touch pad would behave properly.

My observations so far are that the device will always work correctly after being turned on. Then after (usually) hours of on time the touch pad problem occurs. Again a quick turn off/on fixes the problem.

I am considering reflashing, was going to wait for v5 as I can get around the fault fairly quickly.

I'd be interested to see if other have had this fault and can shed light on if its a hardware or software problem.

Cheers

Indeed that is a serious problem. It's a long time ago I've seen or heard about this error. It used to be a common problem with the BT-drivers of the iPAQ 2210, until HP issued a fix for it. But I've not seen it on the hx4700.
Which make of hx4700 do u have ? Is it the early 64 MB or the more powerfull 128 MB ? Did you apply any BT-patch after upgrading ?

I had the same problem on a previous release of WM6

I reflashed my ipaq to WM3 and the touchpad was still crasy.

It was dead.

I contacted HP and I sent them my ipaq.

They sent it back to me after a week with a new touch pad.

I wonder if it is due to some bad flashing.

Some saied it was due to a charging problem;

I still don't know ...

I also got this problem, starting my Bluetooth GPS on the 4700 with WM6 (latest Kozhura build). Don't know what causes it, but my solution was to hard-reset the 4700, install GPS-software (ex. TomTom) and pair the BT device. This worked fine (and fast, because there where no other programs installed). After that I've reinstalled everything else I had on my device (without the advanced tweak programs and iPhone) , and to safe some space I've installed all programs on a CF card. Everything (incl. BT) works still shiny.

So what could cause the failure in my case is one of the tweakprograms, iPhone or too less dataspace. Also I haven't installed the hp fix for GPS. Comport 8 just works ok.

Even when I turned that off, it annoyingly warned me that the protection was off, plus it was slower and more intensive than XP.

What is it with MS in developing its software to treat everyone as an idiot; Office 2007 would be perfect if it didn't triple required clicks to 'protect' users.

Have been running WM6-4 since its release on my hx4705 ... everything works very well, including all my BT devices and WiFi. However, I misplaced my SD card with all my apps on it .. so now I am reinstalling on a new SD card.

Most apps install OK via the EXE file from my Notebook ... but none install from the CAB files copied to the SD card. I haven't installed anything since WM5 .. where either EXE or CAB methods worked, so I don't know if this new symptom is an issue or normal.

Any ideas and suggestions?

Frank K-F

UPDATE: Googled problem and found an SPB util "UnlockSecurity" -- installed it. This, however, did not enable installing from CAB files directly. Next I tried to install from CAB file via "CabInstl" utility that I have used all along to install apps to a destination of my choice. Now, however, when I opened this util I pointed to the CAB file -- then to the destination folder -- then install --- and BINGO the apps installed correctly. Tried this procedure with 5 or 6 apps and it worked just fine.

2 pages ago i wrote about touch pad going crazy. I have found a solution.

First i used Resco Explorer with registry editor and edited in:
Local_machine --> Drivers --> BuiltIn --> NavPoint

CursorSpeed 0
Index 0
Monitoring 0
OperationMode 0
ScrollRate 0

Exit program and soft reset.
After that i installed Tweak2k2 program and "Disable touch pad on 4700".

Again restarted and now it's not crazy touch pad anymore (but useless).

I have tried both operations earlier, but they weren't successful. Now when i did both of them in that order i wrote... it's ok now :)

I hope i helped someone. It was really anoying and i also tried fisically removing touch pad (ipaq didn't load properly).

MS and hardware manufacturers don't make money from us merrily sitting using the same computer and software, they want us to upgrade both so promote a cycle of bigger & faster PC to use bigger and more complex software which in turn needs an even bigger PC; this is backed up with how a PC running Vista needs more memory and a faster processor to run 'just as fast as XP'.

Turning full circle to come back on topic, this site and others like it and the ROMs within are the bane of MS and the manufacturers' lives. They don't want you downloading a better version of the operating system that gives new life to your old hardware, that is why HP didn't make WM6 for the hx4700, they want you to have, to need, the latest hardware.

I'm not saying Vista or the latest smartphone user is wrong, each to their own, but personally I try to go for features over marketing (iPod anyone? :))

The husband of an iPhone owner made a very interesting point to me, the iPhone is technically fantastic, but he does chuckle when the battery goes flat as his wife has lost everything it can be used for, including her mobile; I've not seen that mentioned in the wizzy marketing.

Now, does anyone want my soap box? :)

My PDA has stopped syncing with my computer, it keeps giving the error:"Syncronization cannot be completed".

I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling Activesync and the whole lot.

I am up to doing a hard reboot on my PDA but would like to backup my data first.

I can't find a backup utility on my PDA, is one hidden somewhere or do I have to buy one?

Also any plans for WPA2 in WiFi on the WM6?

Nope it won't. ROM's are pretty device specific.
You can try here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=329079); it's a ROM for the 2xxx series iPAQ.

I've been using ver 4 now for some time and generally had no problems with what I use it for.

I did try to install Voice2Go; which is supposed to work with WM6, but it wouldn't start up. Always came back with skins not found.

Has anyone tried this program??

Sorry for this being slightly off topic, I was just wondering if anyone in all their rom noodling efforts happened to now about using those connector pins for expansion packs (that don't seem to ever been made) next to the battery pins on the top part of the battery bay. Any leads about these pins and if they also exist on the 210, or if you know of any peripherals that make use of them.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I flashed my HX4700 a while ago and I am very pleased with the result. However I have a problem with TCPMP. When I play a movie, the touch screen doesn't respond anymore after a while. Only the touchpad can be used then. After a soft reset the touchscreen is working again. Anyone with the same problem?

Write a letter to HP's dev relations, pass yourself off as a small VAR who wants to make an add-on device for some vertical market (inventory control, I dunno), and needs the specs and pin-outs for the interface. Write back to us and share what you get in reply. :p

Me, I couldn't even get the bastards to tell me whether the USB charging inputs would accept 6VDC rather than the typical 5VDC, or whether that would stress the charging circuit.

Yeah, I like that idea. I'll give it a go. I've been trying to see if any vertical market devices were ever made (medical, inventory, etc.) with no luck.
There is of course some intriguing dlls connected to it like a usb host and smartslot, with video connections to the ATI chip noted for a few of the pins.

Regarding 6v vs 5 v on the USB, I wouldn't do it, take the time to throttle it down, and if you were thinking of battery packs, just use AA or AAA NiMH they don't go to 1.5 like alkaline, being closer to 1.25v each.
You must know about this page already but if you don't you may find it useful: http://pinouts.ru/PDA/ipaq_22p_pinout.shtml.

So, I'll twiddle my thumbs a little and do some case mod scheming for my device while I wait for Kozhura to get his device back and we can stop speculating on SDHC cards and testy replies to "helpful" minded folks.

Well, here's (http://www.sdcard.org/about/sdhc/) a more specific link, and I quote from that page:
* SDHC Host Products can use both SD and SDHC Memory Cards.
* SD Host Products can use only SD Memory Card 2GB or less.
So, unless the hx4700 is a SDHC host, it only supports SD.

I'd like to summarize what you can do to your machines memory with what is on the shelf for those hoping for sdhc who may end up being dissappointed.

SDIO slot: 4 GB sd card, not sdhc, ~$20-$60 at NewEgg for a Transcend Branded Card (mileage may vary here, mostly 2GB cards are the only sure thing from all brands, but the Transcend non SDHC 4gb cards apparently work with the hx47xx series)

CFIO slot: 32 GB CF card (64 GB later this spring ) ~$140 at NewEgg for an A-DATA branded card

Internal RAM upgrade: Change onboard 64 MB ram to 128 MB ram. Pocket PC Techs will swap the Ball Grid Array RAM for ~$170.

So, unless the SDIO port just happens to be compatible with the SDHC media using software or firmware adaptations, you are limited to 4GB of extended memory if you use your CF port for a tool (barcode, gps, USB host, etc.).

If you use your SDIO and CFIO port for memory, today on January 19th, 2008 you are limited to the combined CF & SD card sizes of 36 GB of memory, costing as low as $160 for both.

If you got SDHC working on your hx4705, those cards are readily available up to 16 GB. 32 GB are announced as in production, with 64 GB coming out about the same time you are working on the ROM kitchen for Windows Mobile 2008 on you old IPAQ 210 ;). If the SDHC is enabled on the hx4705 today, you would max out at 48 GB rather than 36 GB (or 80 GB for SDHC vs. 68 GB SD later this spring)

I find the compact flash memory option to be the more economical path of least resistance even if SDHC is working, because rarely do I use a CF gps or barcode reader when I want my mp3's to listen to, and bluetooth tools have made that a non issue for me.

So with that summary, I have a question folks:

Is there such a thing as a compact flash port splitter cable? I've seen extender cables and such, but anything like a y cable where you can have your memory and say... a CF GPS in use at the same time? Does CFIO support this?

Right now as an alternative I'm checking if the CF usb host can be attached to a hub to have a USB keyboard, mouse and multiple usb flash card readers. Yeah, I know you see this frankenstein of an idea in your mind and it gives you the shivers just imagining such a kluge, but entertain the possibility instead of the immediate "WTF would you do that for" gag reflex. :)

As a side note, I really want access to the usb host on the ATI 3220 chip through the Smart Port tabs in the battery compartment and the atiusbh.dll to connect it to a hard drive, rather than through the CFIO, but this is too poorly documented.

Great article on SD cards:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card

hx470x specifications indicate full SDIO compliance and probably doesn't support 50Mhz clock of the SD specification.

Regarding SDHC and the SD specification 2.0:
It uses the same form factor as SD, but the SD 2.0 standard in SDHC uses a different memory addressing method (sector addressing vs byte addressing), thus theoretically reaching a maximum capacity of up to 2048GB.

How about a 2 Terabyte SD card? ... How many movies would it hold?

The driver would have to detect the card addressing format and support both sector (SDHC) and byte addressing (SD).

Sounds very interesting. I've been doing searches everywhere to try and find out more. Now that my device is older, I'd be more willing to "tear" the thing apart to try and expand it's abilities...but...you first. :)

Dirk, neighbour, I've send you a private message ;)
Battery arrived 2 days ago.
Tried several programs to install.
This morning again "out of juice" , batterydrain.
So, it's not the battery herself but the installed programs ... I guess some are not compatible with the combination HX4700-WM6 , so I removed WeatherPanel (it's a Today plug in ) & Messenger Live.
Not sure if this will help ... wait and see the next days.
What I can assure: with my old battery installed PocketBreeze+SPB Pocket Plus+Opera+Resco Explorer this combination works fine, no battery drain.
I guess programs like WeatherPanel & Messenger Live will try to make some connections to update ...
Any other suggestions?

I also use WeatherPanel, and I experience moderate battery drain when the program is set to auto update. You can disable this feature in the program on the Connection tab of the WeatherPanel Options, or you can set the update interval to longer values. I have mine set to 1 hour and the 4700 will drain slowly enough that I can usually run a few days between charges.

WeatherPanel has not been supported for many months, certainly not since WM5 and WM6 became available, so we may need to look for newer weather plugins.

Hi everybody. Hope some of you can help me with this, and sorry if I'm not in the right thread.

Untill today i've been using an hx4700 running Kozhura's WM 6.0.7.0 release 4 ENG, and it's been great (thank's again, Mr. Kozhura :)). I did get a freeze every once in a while, but a simple reset fixed it allways, and everything was working (WiFi, BT, IrDA, SDcard, CompactFlash, ...)

Problem: I simply took it off the craddle this morning (and it was not even synchronizing at that moment) , and it hung up.
- tryed Reset/clean reset/hard reset, but it never started again
- tryed removing battery: no change :(
- tryed removing internal battery as well: no change

I get either the White'n blue HP screen and then stop (all buttons functional except Power), or sometimes it won't event lit up. Only way to turn it on, as far as the HP screen, is to put it back to the craddle

I re-flashed ROM (2 times, with many tests'n reset in between), which it still accepts, put it does not change a thing. At flashing (with mtty11a), at the end I get a "start point unknown" message, though the whole process is reported ok.

Anyone out there with an idea other than RIP it would be very helpfull.

Cheers

Hi all, I can't get this to work.

I have an hx4700, and I've tried cradle and SD card with no luck.

I write to the SD card and see the appropriate output:

C:\Documents and Settings\George\Desktop\WM6_4700_RELEASE4>ntrw.exe write OS.raw
E:
NTRW v2.00
Removeable media
Cylinders: 0:124
TracksPerCylinder: 255
SectorsPerTrack: 63
BytesPerSector: 512
bufsize is 65536
41681408 bytes written

I put my SD card in the device, then on my ipaq I hit contacts+itask+reset button, and it goes in to the HP bootloader screen, it shows me that little progress bar, once it fills up it goes back to the Windows Mobile 2003 setup screen.

I try with the mtty11a application also, whenver I select the USB all I see at the screen is:

CLIENTCLIENTCLIENT

So I type in lnb OS_WM6.nb0, and even though I can't see it I hit enter. I wait, nothing happens.

I'm assuming the little button underneath the hx4700 is the reset button.

any ideas?

About the "clean Reset", did it already; trouble is, I do get the msg that offers either to clean data(pushing Calendar) or to abort (pushing iTask). Whatever choice, it stucks with either "cleaning data, please wait" or "keeping all data" for days, frozen

Hi there,

I did remark that if i leave my hx4700 in it's cradle overnight, Ive a 25-30 % batterydrain. If I take it out of the cradle (or disconnect from the carcharger) it only has a 15-20 % drain overnight. I don't use Weatherpanel, but I've got Messenger Live, Yahoo Go2 etc... installed.
I guess it's more to do with the fact WM never closes down. After a reboot you reload the system, but in whatever way you 'shut down', WM will always stay 'running'. Together with all the goodies you installed. And all the 'services' that run in the background.

Hi Dirk, seems to have the same issues this morning , only 8% of battery power left (unit won'y start up by his own ... had to use a soft-pin reset & the cradle) ... You are right , the HX4700 with WM6 lives is own life (starting up by itself in the background etc ...).
That's not good news :(
I can't trust the unit (with WM6) anymore.
I often check the cpu usage with Pocket Mechanic and saw some 50% "in use" (in that case I soft reset the unit , otherwise a slowdown unit ans a night later a empty unit) ... normal this must be +- 3% .
Any way to kill those background battery drain

About the "clean Reset", did it already; trouble is, I do get the msg that offers either to clean data(pushing Calendar) or to abort (pushing iTask). Whatever choice, it stucks with either "cleaning data, please wait" or "keeping all data" for days, frozen

Any other suggestion ? It looks like the boot part of the system is dammaged (ROM dammage ?), and i've no clue/competences to fix this so far ...

About the "code entry point unknown" , thanks for the info; I didn't pay attention to it last time, as the system ended up working

Many thanks for your kind help; let's hope another post will help.

I don't understand the power issues here.

My 4700 has been out of the cradle for 1 week with occasional use and the battery is still at 80%.

I have 2 calc programs, TomTom, Pocket Player,Spb Weather,Resco File Explorer,Skype,PathawayGps,and Opera installed

I can't see how it's the OS that's causing the problem, But I may be wrong.

Just my 2 cents worth

But SD can't be removed ... everything has been installed on the SD card ;)

In addition to what I've listed, I too have a 2 gig SD card with all the programs installed on it.

From my last post the power has dropped to 76% and still not docked or charged. 1 week 2 days now.

Now Bluetooth and WiFi consume a lot of power. Is it possible that a program; running in the background,is using that facility without lighting up the blue led indicator?????

Internal GSM, GPS and Swiss Army Knife features are NOT for me.

I find the HP iPAQ-300 series more interesting since it features a "4.3" transmissive TFT 16-bit RGB depth 65,000 color WVGA 800 x 480 pixel touch screen display" .. that is 25% more pixels for all apps, and the 16:10 aspect ratio is much more compatible with movies.

I would be ready with $$s for an upgrade of the hx4705 PPC with the above monitor; a meaningful memory increment; SDHC compatibility; touch-pad and buttons as now; upgraded WiFi, and WM6 version comparable to Kozhura's heroic effort; and a larger PagePool or settings accessible to the user via a utility (my habit is to have several apps open) ... similar to the VirtualMemory settings in WXP-Desktop, for example. Additional connectivity for external display might be helpful as well, perhaps via BT.

Prior to Kozhura's hacked series, my hx4705 was heading toward expensive paper weight status (HP's WM5 release has been a fiasco for me) ... but that has been radically altered now. I have been running on Kozhura's WM6 ver-4 since its release. It has been flawless for me ... StereoSound, BT, WiFi, TouchScreen, Buttons, ActiveSync-4.5 ... everything works. So now I can exploit my hx4705 for what I intended it ... to use as an image and data resource in one-to-one customer discussions/presentations of the technical products that I designed and other products which I represent. My personal use is also sound/image/video intensive (for example, Patton -- DivX at highest quality @ 1GB file runs perfectly; Beethoven or Sinatra via my BT (Motorola S805) DJ Headset - sounds great).

I arrived at the hx4700 shortly after I bought an iPAQ-h2200 .. the QVGA was totally inadequate for my intended uses, and the unit was under-powered; I tried to pass if off to my wife as a picture album .. but no sale, so it has joined my dust collecting paper weights.

I had my hx4705 memory maxed (by PPC Techs, Inc -- recommended), so I have fewer choke-points in my system.

After too many trial downloads and purchases of apps that did not work out for me .. I settled for the following APPS:
Adobe Reader 2.0
Audio Recorder - RESCO
BlueLoggerManager - DeLorme
Bryth Flash Player
BT Phone Manager
CabInstl
CalliGrapher
CorePlayer
DinarSoft Menu/Launch bundle
DockWare-PRO 2.0.2
GSPlayer
OfficeMobile (for lack of an alternative)
Opera Browser
PhatNotes
Photo Viewer - RESCO
Pocket Informant 8
Pocket Mechanic
Pocket PC CAD Viewer
Resco Radio
Skype
Stowaway BT Mouse and Keyboard
Street Atlas USA 2008 HH - DeLorme
XCPUScalar
XnView Pocket
... plus miscell utils.

I am familiar with all, advanced user with some, in-learning with several, baffled by a few.

A capable PPC update is a value to this user.

HP are you listening?

Frank K-F

Should add the my current storage includes a 4GB (Q-Memory 150x) SD plus a 16GB CF (Sandisk Extreme-III) card. I have NOT experienced the battery drain problems others are having.

I don't know if I'm totally wrong but I was thinking about the settings of the today panel.
Ik have in on the normal install time. And I mean the Today timeout. In is turned on and stands on 4 hr.
I have never been able to understand what it means but in this case it could be the answer to the problem because I have nearly no battery drain with wm6. In fact I have never had any problems with battery drain but I always have had the Today timeout turned on.
Perhaps this doesn't help a thing but I'm only trying to help.

I can confirm, CF-Cards take a lot of power. This has been the only reason why the battery of my HX4700 comes to low level. WM2003SE, WM5, WM6, all the same effect. So I try to remember always to remove the CF-card after use and it's fine (in my case)!

PS: I use 1 Sandisk Ultra2 2GB and one noname 4GB CF-card, both the same effect

I have a 4700 with WM5 (HP) and one with WM6 (Kozhura rev 4). Both of them will remain at or near 100% after a few days with no power. Both have a generic 4Gb CF card and a 4Gb SD card (not SDHC) in which I never take out.

Nope. The hx4700 series has the PXA-270 where the ipaq 200 series will have the PXA-310.

Read this:http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=365&pgno=0

IF HP does it right this time, the ipaq 200 series should really be a step ahead although HP already has lost an opportunity to give us WVGA :-|

With due respect, I thought this was a forum for the ipaq 4700. I don't wish to offend so no harsh come backs please. There can only be a very few people that can really comment on the merits of this new ipaq, but here we're talking about the ipaq 4700 ROM upgrading & fault finding. Thanks! :)

The actual forum is for XDA development, fi you want to be picky :)

Anyway, it looks very similar in size to a 4700. Runs about as fast. With WM6 loaded, it feels the same. Doesn't have a screen cover like the 4700. Not sure what it's made of.

I guess if you want to know more, you should visit a dedicated 210 forum such as http://forum.brighthand.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1333

Hello,

Dont buy it, you can download it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/68396806/WM6_4700_0_7_0_RELEASE4.rar.html

To flash your device using cradle, do the following:
1.Enter the HX4700 in Bootloader (Calendar+iTask+Reset)
2.Put your device on usb cradle.
3.Run bootloader
4.Choose the downloaded file
5.The update begins
6. when it is ready you must reset the pda (calendar+contacts+reset)choose "clear all data in memory"
7. Wait and see
8. Done.

Good luck and dont tell your boss, Andre.

Yep. There was never an IP-law-approved release of WM6 for this device. That SOB is counting on (a lot of) uneducated people not knowing that to make a couple bucks. He knows he can profit from sheer volume (of ignorance). He keeps the amount small so that once (or if) people figure out they've been duped they won't be driven to go after him or call the police.

BTW, I just searched eBay for "wm6 hx4700", thinking I might be the one to turn him in, but got no hits. I found a guy selling an hx4700 *with* WM6 installed, but that's no more illegal than what we're doing installing this in the first place.

Then I installed BatteryStatus Ext from Chi-Tai and gives me the batt percentage on today plugin with cpu clock. On the other hand I think that cpu temp (only 3.3 ° celsius) and battery drain (only 40 mA with BT and wifi enabled) are not the real values.
I installed it for the "close app" X button functionality as well.

I think my battery problem may have simply been an old battery. Earlier this month I was called for jury duty and the courthouse has free wireless, so I tried to use my hx4700, but with the wifi active and the brightness set to 50% it didn't even last two hours... it went completely dead suddenly when the battery was supposedly still at about 20% capacity. I had been seeing that behavior before. There also seems to be a slight bulge in the battery pack itself, and it's not just because it's happy to see me.

Late this month I bought a genuine HP 3600MAH extended battery. With a fresh charge, brightness at 50%, and both wifi and bluetooth active, the Power Standby dialog indicates that I would have about 12 hours of continuous runtime; if I crank the brightness to 100%, that estimate drops to about 5-6 hours. If I turn all wireless off, it indicates about 18-19 hours for 50% brightness and about 11 hours at 100%. (And yes, I gave the metering time to 'settle'). That was with the Standby Period set to minimum (of course Standby is irrelevant with WM5 and WM6, but it affects slightly what the metering estimates).

Does that sound good, about right, for a 3.6AH battery, or should it run even longer?

I can't get BT on. Everything else works fine. I am reluctant to move to V4 as a number of annoying bugs have been reported. Is there a fix for BT? Is this a known issue? (iPAQ HX 4700 WM6 classic - v3)

Thanks for any hint.
