Jeff, I reported that twit to eBay, via the Report This link, but it wouldn't hurt for more people to report it, too. I used the following descriptions:
"Counterfeits and copyright violations",
"Other potential infringement" and
"Offering to send or receive copyrighted material",
which seemed like the best fit.
From my experience installing a using WM6 Rev 4, you won't need any wifi fixes or patches, though you might want OzBTWF or RealVGA for your specific needs. I've pretty much given up on using it in full VGA mode myself, except for browsers... there's just too many compatibility issues with various applications.

I can't get BT on. Everything else works fine. I am reluctant to move to V4 as a number of annoying bugs have been reported. Is there a fix for BT? Is this a known issue? (iPAQ HX 4700 WM6 classic - v3)
Thanks for any hint.
so there is a BT issue?

There is not a GENERAL issue with WM6 Rev 4 and wireless; both 802.11b and Bluetooth worked fine for me right "out of the box". If there is an actual problem, it is limited to specific circumstances which I don't believe have been accurately identified. Whether your device might be one of the exceptions, I thus can't say.
As mentioned by Rockerduck, I also have a BT GPS (Globalsat BT-338) and TomTom 6.x, and it works flawlessly.

Hello,
Dont buy it, you can download it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/68396806/WM6_4700_0_7_0_RELEASE4.rar.html
To flash your device using cradle, do the following:
1.Enter the HX4700 in Bootloader (Calendar+iTask+Reset)
2.Put your device on usb cradle.
3.Run bootloader
4.Choose the downloaded file
5.The update begins
6. when it is ready you must reset the pda (calendar+contacts+reset)choose "clear all data in memory"
7. Wait and see
8. Done.
Good luck and dont tell your boss, Andre.
WOW thanks for the pointers.. this way did not work for me..
I could not get any further than 31%
I just simply followed the readme
1.In processes (CTRL+ALT+DEL) you must kill Wcesscom.exe
2.Then Enter in Bootloader (Contacts+iTask+Reset)
3.Put your device on usb cradle.
4.Run mtty11a.exe
5.In "Port" choose \\.\WCEUSBSH001 and click OK
6.Write command: lnb OS_WM6.nb0
7.Wait
8.Enjoy yourself :)
this way worked for me..
now even funnier....
bluetooth would not work this morning. I synced my pda with my desktop last night and installed all of my games and software..
this morning I figured I would have to reinstall it all...
couldnt find the ipaq backup (where did that go too?)
so I just over wrote what I had but everything is still there... It did upgrade because now I have the bluetooth icon down near the wifi which I didnt have and bluetooth will turn on....
KUDOS!!!!!
So far so good ... will give feedback later...
my only q's still are..
1. where did ipaq backup go
2. where did msn messenger go
3. eXperience v2.09 errors out when running... will not launch...
Thanks All

With WM6 you can only sync with the latest Activsync software, ver 4 (4.5 is current). wm2003se would work with Acitvsync 3 or 4. In case you didn't know the WIFI sync option is no longer possible under Activsync 4 or WM6 for that matter.

When I used the standard "mtty11a.exe", all i got was 'frowny face' :( , even after following everything mentioned here, manually typing out the commands, etc, I couldn't get the flashing to work. SO I tried the hp bootloader method (that Chris ? made), the one that auto installs the Vista driver, and the flashing worked perfectly, three times in a row.
Also, when I flashed mine w/ WM6v4, it seemed sluggish. So I performed a few clean-resets, reflashed, did a few more clean-resets, and it seemed to help. My dad's was very fast and snappy after the initial flash to WM6v4.
Another quick note; WPA-PSK WiFI would not work on my 4700 with WM6v3, but works perfectly with WM6v4. Didn't try BT with WM6v3, and haven't tried BT on WM6v4.
SO, after flashing to WM6v4, I installed ALL programs to MAIN memory, nothing to any cards. (Any advise anyone? Good or Bad?) Then I used SPB Backup and made a complete backup of my PDA:
MY PDA
HP hx4700 Standard (no memory upgrade)
2GB SD OCZ Hi-Speed 150x
4GB CF Transcend 45X
WM6v4 (Kozhura)
Wisbar Advance 3.1
Pocket Informant 8.01
Rescoe File Explorer 6.17
Pocket Mechanic 2.89.241
Illium eWallet 6.00.23147
SPB Pocket Plus 4.0.2
MY DAD's PDA
Same, except 1GB SD Card only, No CF Card
I restored the SPB BACKUP copy to my dad's pda & mine = 2 duplicate pda's.
First, Let me note, that BT, WiFi, etc. were ALL completely disabled, from the "normal" WM6 control screens, and the BT and WiFi icons appeared at the bottom of the PDA screen, with red "X's" on then, indicating they were disabled. Exactly the same for BOTH hx4700's in my possession at this time.
I never had any drain issues with V3, with both 2GB SD & 4GB CF cards installed. WHen I upgraded 2 hx4700's to WM6v4 2 nights ago, using my 4700 for two hours, I got a 60% battery drain. So I charged it up to 100%, and in about 10 hours with no pda use, I had 40% battery drain, with all programs closed. My dad's pda just sits there, with barely any battery usage occuring (nor is it being used, but still, no battery drain). SO I charged both PDA's to 100% last night.
Follow me here: from sitting at work @ 100% battery (on both PDA's), I drove home in 30 minutes without any pda use, and it (my pda) was sitting @ 86% battery. My dad's pda was sitting at work, w/no mods.
So, for my PDA, from Wisbar Advance 3.1 build 5 ($10), I clicked on the battery bubble, then the PROCESSES option; this allowed me to view all running processes, kind of like CNTL+ALT+DELETE<TASKMANAGER<PROCESSES window in Windows. I forced closed the WiFi and BT processes (BTTrayCE.exe & iPAQWireless.exe). This morning my PDA had a 1% drain on it!!!! as compared to last night. Whereas my dad's pda had only lost 4% without any program closure/manipulation (and no CF card).
So far, I can conclude that IT APPEARS that BTTrayCE.exe & iPAQWireless.exe cause some battery loss for my PDA (but maybe not for all WMv4 users). Also, both PDA's appear to function a LITTLE bit differently, one being quicker with less battery use (my dad's), and the other (mine) a little slower with more battery drain. A portion of this may have to do with the CF card installed in my pda (testing to be conducted shortly regarding the removal of the card). Also, note that both pdas, when turned on with SD card in slot, displays a white screen for about 2-3 seconds before the normal display comes up.
Regardless, WM6v4 has something happening internally or causes something hardware-wise, for SOME 4700's, not all, that causes battery drain. Same PDAs, yet different. May that is why we are seeing (over the past 200 posts or so) differences for everybody regarding flashing, compatibility, battery drain, etc, etc, etc.
Back to the old battery issue. Does the BATTERY FIX CAB (from post #1982) work? I haven't tried it yet, because I cannot download it, nor find out how to download it. There doesn't appear to be a link on that web page. I will try to get it later today.
Also, how is the new HP iPAQ 214 memory structured? Different than on our 4700? Faster, better, same? see http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13316 (I answered my own questions) thanks "alan sh"
What is the problem I see here about the rootCA? What is this?
And lastly, how do we contribute to Kozhura?

Please, alan sh, how do you like the new ipaq? Or anyone else out there who has it.
DO you think it's worth upgrading from the 4700?
Is the cradle/charging setup the same as the 4700?
Aside from the fact that it is fun troubleshooting the WM6v3 & v4 issues; & hoping for a v5 kozhura fix someday. I am wondering about just buying a device (the 211) which is quick, will work and be stable.
The $450 cost may pay for itself in work time lost; playing with the 4700 to get it to work, although it is fun, I just don't have the time right now. Plus at a $170 charge to upgrade the 4700 memory from 64 to 128, and the 211 is SDHC compliant. :) (4GB SDHC @ Frys for $16)

Thanks eveyone here for the info. I just ordered the new iPAQ 211 from thenerds.net :) It was $415+$46 overnight shipping (Florida to CA)+$4 for same day packing/shipping = $466. I will have it Monday morning. When I called them on the phone, they had 18 of them, when I got off the phone ordering it, there was 11 left (1240pm PST). I guess it's time to prep my hx4700 for ebay. (I've spent lots of time with kozhura's WM6v3 & v4 mods for the 4700, and it's been really fun; but now on to other things/issues (iPAQ 211+SDHC). Not necesarily better things, since playing with this stuff is actually fun. Thanks all and talk to you again soon, when I start to play with the 211.

I've been doing a little cost-benefit analysis myself: cost of time spent tinkering with ROM upgrades, CF 802.11g card, extra $ spent for large SD card instead of much cheaper SDHC card, cost of that new extended battery AND the aluminum case to hold it....
I'm thinking maybe I shoulda saved that money (and time) and directed it toward the 210....

Thanks, that makes my purchase not hurt so bad. Sometimes it's just better to move on, but kozhura and the rest here have made the 4700 quite a fun beast. And I'm sure it will continue to breath life for sometime. The 4700 is the best gadget I have owned, until this coming Monday morning. Newegg has an 8GB SDHC card for $33, and a 16GB one for $79. Had this problem when I first installed WM6-v3 and 4. Nothing seemed to work to get ActiveSync to function. I then uninstalled from my notebook, cleaned the registry, restarted the PC .. reinstalled ActiveSync 4.5 .. docked my hx4705 .. followed the setup wizard .. and have had a trouble free USB connection since. I had nothing but sync trouble with WM6 and ActiveSync 4.5 initially as well. My memory is fuzzy as usual, but I think that simply disabling the Advanced Network feature was enough to eliminate that trouble for me. It's possible I may have reinstalled ActiveSync after that point, but I don't think so. I did in fact uninstall and reinstall it at least once before that, including an attempt to revert to 4.1 just to see what would happen.

I am trying to instal the latest WM6 update but am not successfull.
When I run the bootloader.exe and direct it to the WM6_4700_0_7_0_RELEASE4.rar file it says no files to extract and so doesn't continue even though if I double click on the file it quite happily opens in winrar - what is the problem and how do I get around it.
Thanks

Just open the rar-file (like you've done allready), but this time read the readme.txt that's inside. ;)

I tried this one too, but i didn't clean the registry. What should i delete from there?...
Mind you, I am no expert on WXPP ... but over the years I had a number of difficult experiences in managing my apps. Some would not uninstall properly or completely ... and reinstalling them was a challenge. So I took the axe to it and chopped all the files from my HDD, and registry entries from my system for that particular app.
ActiveSync has some 250 registry entries as currently installed in my system ... that is not counting the PPC applications that I installed from the desktop (a copy of their respective CAB files can be found in the ActiveSynch folder) perhaps all have one or more additional registry entries.
If I were to uninstall ActiveSync, most ... hopefully all ... registry entries should be scrubbed by the uninstall. When this is not the case, the left-overs may interfere with the proper function of the app after reinstall.
That is my take, but if someone has a better take on this, lets hear it.
CAUTION .. you play with the REGISTRY at your own risk.
Your search string should be 'activesync' (without the quotation marks).

Hi,
First of all : always try to install as much as you can on the memorycard(s). Prevents from loading to much in the program memory and, in the worst case : prevents from loosing data : if the machine breaks, you still have your data on a card somewhere ....
About the batterydrain : I installed tMan 0.9.9 from http://pda.jasnpaka.com/tman, and before shutting down I 'kill all backgroundtasks + Kill all tasks'. Spectacular .... from 25-30 % drain overnight, I got to 1-2 % .... There are indeed a few differences in the design/hardware of the hx4700, and as far as I know : it has nothing to do with the memorycards. I tested it with and without the cards inserted. It's really all about the background proggies running and consuming your battery while keeping the processor busy.
Explains also howcome you have 2 (almost identical) PDA with just 1 image running, yet they react differently. The BatteryFix.cab is only for the Axim, doesn't do anything for the hx4700.
For the iPAQ 214, I guess there will be fora up and running when more ppl get one.
Links to Kozhura are in the first post....
Cheers

Hello,
Try this, do only an hard reset with the reset button, you can do this with your stylus and see what happens then.
Greetz, Andre.
Hi Andre. Made it finally ...
Managed to flash to a WM 5 ROM from the HP site (with Chris' Universal Bootloader because, of course, HP's doesn't do the job ...), and hx came back to life.
Which makes me think there might be a small bug somewhere in the loading/starting of 6.0.7.0 rel.4 ENG , as I flashed a few times with that version after the freeze, whithout any improvement.
Now that I have a backup solution (WM5), I'll install again Kozhura's WM6, and see what happens.

On my HX4700 I have WM5 2.0 edition Serial v1.01. Connection with my computer is not working. So I’m trying to upgrade WM6 with SD card. I copied whole directory to sd card
1.Run Create_SD_ROM.bat
( I get OS.raw with size 41.681.408 )
2.Change X: in Write_SD_ROM_to_SD.bat to your SD card (for exsamp. F:)
I have changed X with L with editor F4. Now I have: ...\WM6_RELEASE4\ntrw.exe write os.raw l:
del os.raw
3.Run Write_SD_ROM_to_SD.bat and wait - When I made this command it says to me: The system cannot find the path specified
And OS.raw disappears
Can any body help me?

Any donations he receives now are likely to wind up being used to acquire a shiny new iPAQ 210, rather than rummaging through eBay Russia for somebody's castoff hx4700 and hoping that it arrives in usable condition. That's what I would do at this point!

I copy here the upgrade procedures like I wrote down in post #1569. It also tells you to do a clean reset after upgrading.
To flash the ROM use the Bootloader.
(I used these instructions since I started with Kozhura's WM6 ROM's and they have not failed me in 3 ROM updates.)
Step 1: Make a new folder in the root folder of your harddisk drive. make sure it has no spaces.
e.g. C:\BootLoader\
don't use something like C:\Boot Loader\ as it contains spaces.
(* NOTE: Having spaces in the folder containing the rom file will cause an error to show because it can't send the file to the device.*)
Step 2: Download the WM6 rom and any bootloader into the folder you just created in step one.
Rom: WM6_4700_0_7_0_FIXED.rar
BootLoader: BootLoader.exe.
(* NOTE: Don't download them into another folder that has spaces, put them in the folder from step one.*)
(Make sure Activesync is not running. Kill (END)the wcescomm.exe process in Windows Task Manager.)
Step 3: Put your hx4700 in bootloader mode by pressing ITASK+CONTACTS+RESET, And put it in the sync cradle.
(Initially it will show SERIAL on the screen but after you have put it in your cradle it will show USB)
(* NOTE: It's best to charge your iPAQ or have power connected before you perform the rom upgrade.*)
Step 4: Open the BootLoader.exe from the folder, and select the 'WM6_4700_0_7_0_FIXED.rar' file when it asks you to select a rom file.
It will automatically find and extract the nbf file, remove the header, close activesync, then start uploading it to your device.
(* NOTE: You may need to put on a pot of coffee, it takes a while. It will show an error after uploading it, and stay in bootloader mode, but it will still work once you apply step 5.*)
Step 5: Lastly, perform a clean reset by pressing CONTACTS + INBOX + RESET. When asked to confirm the clean reset press CALENDER.
(* NOTE: You may need to soft reset before or after doing this. This step is required by all bootloaders. (Solnyshok’s mod etc.) Don't skip it or it will not boot up.*)
Note: If using Windows Vista, You will need to install special drivers. A dialog box will prompt you to install them automatically if it detects you are running vista.

I doubt that, having built a cutting edge device, its like yours alone and if done right perfectly tailored for you. These devices now have a couple years more. Many Thanks to Kozhura and the gang. The education learned here can be applied on all devices. I will buy a 210 in a few months, but, look forward to release 5 more. I had the dreaded dead Battery on one device today (128MB) I did not manully close all apps before shutting down yesterday. This has only bite me 4 times now, since WM5 days. The manual shut down is failsafe and so is Sprite back-up. I believe one of the programs causes it, possibly Contacts or a PIM, the only things used yeterday on that one. Did not sync or anything. This also only happens on the unit I have e-mail on. Does not happen on the other one or I cant make it and have tryed.

Way too much to list, but, everything working now.

I bought a used ipaq 4700 from ebay... had it for a few days and installed the rev 4 and it works great... even left it unplugged over night and only dropped 2% battery and that was after using it for 3hrs in bed...
anyhow I agree on that comment about hoping it arives in useable condition.. my ipaq died this weekend... touch screen stopped like being touched... I took it apart and messed with the connections and it works again... hope that dont happen often!!!!!
Is there anything i can do to fix this BT problem and perhaps some of the other issues?

I will hopefully have my bluetooth gps this week ( I know it is not the BT headset) as I have not tested BT yet.. will do soon though...
I just bought Qstarz BT-Q1000 51CH & 32HR Bluetooth GPS Data Logger Travel Recorder with bonus 2 socket car charger with usb, free carry case and free vent mount.... cant wait!!!!!!!!

I agree... with 2gb sd and 4gb cf I do not see why one would install the apps into main memory... unless speed is the issue... I feel that I want to keep the main memory open as much as possible for apps while running....

Have you tried a clean reset? As far as I know, what you show is normal, the clean reset will wipe out anything from the previous ROM and load the neew ROM settings. I think the clean reset involves pressing the bottom right together with the top left and the reset button simultaneously.

Any donations he receives now are likely to wind up being used to acquire a shiny new iPAQ 210, rather than rummaging through eBay Russia for somebody's castoff hx4700 and hoping that it arrives in usable condition. That's what I would do at this point!
My hx4700 is still working like new,and I've still got some time left on my HP accidental damage warranty.Maybe he'll buy mine so I can get a 210?How much is shipping from US to Russia?:D
I agree... with 2gb sd and 4gb cf I do not see why one would install the apps into main memory... unless speed is the issue... I feel that I want to keep the main memory open as much as possible for apps while running....
If you've got a couple of cards it can get pretty annoying.Or what if you want to put the card in your PC cardreader and still use your PPC?

hi all, after installing kozhura's WM6 update, I've noticed my device is a little sluggish. The menus are slow, whenever I use the letter detection to write in an application, the device is so slow that I will write 4 letters before they actually show up on my screen.
are there any additional hacks to make the performance of this thing a little better? I unfortunately don't have time to go through all 200 some posts :\

hi,
when i'm turning on my ipaq there is initial few seconds i can't do anything. tapping screen cause nothing, no response. i've resco today plugin installed with battery indicator. it could last for 5 or even more seconds until ??? appears in battery status. does anybody have similar issue? is it normal or sth wrong with my ipaq?
i've wm6 r4, 128mb ram, 4.5mb pp, 2gb sd and 4gb sd in cf2sd adapter. i've tryied 0mb pp but it didn't help.
after removing cards it seems to have quicker response. i'm wandering it is related to some software or system task which accessing storage when "booting". i'm usualy closing programs to clean ram before power off. the only today plugs are PIM, spb backup and resco today plugin. i'm suspecting the least one.

I'm running the ver 3 of the 6.0 update, I have a 4g CF card and 4g SD card and do not have any lag or other issue, I would start with removing all the today panel plugins and add one at a time to determine if one of these are the issue. As for battery draing, I have changed the page file to 00 instead of the default and so far can leave it in standby mode for 3 days and have 65% battery still left. I have found on my Verizon wm6 phone that certain today plugins kill the battery and also cause slugish performance. On my 4700, I use the rhinocode today panel and rhinocode launcher and do not have any side effects. Your mileage may very on what you use.

DO NOT put your 4700 in bootloader mode.
Just put PDA in cradle or connect your cable. Then run DisconnectActiveSync.exe from your computer.
EnterBL.exe must be on your PDA. Then run EnterBL.exe from your pda. Your PDA will go to bootloader mode.
Just foloow instructions from readme file.
But my PDA is dead, but flashing was successfull.

The update was successful but took only a few minutes.
And my device is dead, but it is my fault, I would have read only 5 line : )

I guess he got his hx4700 fixed?
This new release is well timed... because I somehow "bricked" my hx4700 last night! I was messing with my router's wireless config (should have known better), and in doing so managed to wipe the existing keys, which I had forgotten! I tried to set it up again on both the router and hx4700, but as before I was having problems (have a D-Link DGL-4300 router). At one point I edited the wireless profile on the hx4700 and reset to make sure it "took", but it never recovered... it got to the second blue-and-white boot screen and just sat there, never saw the Windows Mobile splash screen. It's been doing that ever since. I've tried removing the battery, letting the backup battery drain, everything short of a clean reset, but nothing helps.
What do you suppose happened? Corruption or failure of one bit in the internal flash ROM? I'm just about to give up and try a clean reset, which will wipe some things I don't have in a backup. Short of a miracle to recover what's in the flash, I guess this is a perfect time for a new ROM to appear.

Same problem here. Putting back into Bootloader was hit and miss so it appeared to be completely dead. I re-flashed with version 4 wm6 ROM and it's back. I'll put off WM6.1 until I hear the issue is resolved.

A new WM6.1 version is fantastic but I think solving small troubles in R4 and creating a new (final) R5 is that all HX4700 owner need at this moment. Current WM6.1 is in alpha development and people need a more estable and faster version.
Kozhura, your versions are great but you can work in two ways, one for new development and beta-testers; and another one for solving issues in the estable version. In any case, thanks a lot for your work.

There really weren't any "small troubles" in Release 4. There were specific problems for a few specific people, but clearly not things that could be blamed on the ROM (not when most people were installing it with complete success). There were some features missing that people dearly wanted, like SDHC support etc., but those aren't problems. Release 4 works fine.
Having said that, I think I would also prefer continued improvements to WM6 Classic if at all possible, rather than moving so quickly to 6.1. I understand that might be difficult, though, if Microsoft's and others' focus has shifted fully to 6.1 and made it difficult to back-port improvements to 6.0.
I tried this initial 6.1 release, but it also didn't work for me: completely dead until I was persistent and got it back into bootloader mode. WM6 Release 4 is back on deck for now.

I just kept hitting the bootloader button sequence (iTask + Contacts + Reset) every so often until it responded; I'd pick it up, try it, then set it down for ten or fifteen minutes if it failed, and then try again. I don't recall exactly how many tries, because I was multitasking. It didn't seem to respond the first time, as other people have noted. The clean/hard reset sequence (Inbox + Contacts + Reset) didn't work as expected after the flashing finished, no matter how many times I tried it. I have WM6 R4 re-flashed, so it's notthe end of the world.

Thanks.
I got it back in the bootloader instantly by doing this:
Press the Contacts + Mail + iTASK buttons at the same time and hold all of them. Then shortly press the Reset button on the bottom and release all of them. The screen with HP logo in the middle will appear having the bootloader version at the bottom and the text “Serial” on the top.
Now updating to WM6 Rev 4, hope it'll be alive again.

That button sequence is misleading, superstitious, and just plain stupid. That sequence SERVES NO SPECIFIC FUNCTION on the iPAQ. There is no point nor benefit to MIXING TWO SEPARATE SEQUENCES. The only reason it worked is because the iPAQ ignored the Inbox button and responded to iTask + Contacts + Reset, which just happens to be the sequence for initiating the bootloader. Gee, what a coincidence, huh?
Stop misleading people like that!

You're an uncaring or self-centered idiot, if you can't see the effect that incorrect instructions in this thread would have on someone reading it, someone who doesn't already know the answer and/or can't sort out the correct one from all the competing stupidity like that. There's been plenty enough of that already in this thread. How about you - and Cariba - stop for a second before you open your mouth and think about the Big Picture?
And no, I don't care about your "feelings". You internal ego and emotional state is your business, not mine to worry about. I care about correct information FOR EVERYONE. I called you an idiot, but everything else above is constructive criticism.

Just a question, have you Flashed the WM6.1 and dealt with the resulting non-responsive seemingly dead HX4700? If you have, you will understand that the normal reset button options don't seem to work. While the three button push, does not seem to be documented, it seemed to work for Cariba, so after pressing buttons for 1-1/2 hours, removing battery for 30 minutes, the seemingly random button press recommended by Cariba seemed to work for me. Maybe it's just foolish, but it's worth discussing in a civil constructive way..
VulcanTourist

Just a question, have you Flashed the WM6.1 and dealt with the resulting non-responsive seemingly dead HX4700?
"blah blah blah" is not civil. It's not even defending Cariba's "feelings". What it says is, "Hey, *I* don't need to waste my time reading this crap, it doesn't help me." In other words, it's a selfish expression.
Had you been keeping up, you would have already read my prior post describing my own experience with 6.1. I did not need any heretofore-unknown secret mystical button sequence, because the KNOWN one works just fine, with a little patience. That is exactly what at least one other person has also said before me. I guess you weren't listening then, either.
I have another constructive suggestion, this one for Kozhura himself: can you PLEASE summarize the useful and correct information from this 210-page thread in your first post, and save the newbies having to pick through all the misinformation? There's still people using Release 3, for chrissakes, precisely because they skimmed and read a few people complaining about Release 4 and thought that meant something. Huge threads like this do a huge disservice when inexperienced uncritical people can't figure out which advice to follow. There needs to be some oversight. I think someone else made the same comment way back when. I was certainly thinking it, but the solution - updating the first post - didn't occur to me until just now. Who better to know what's good and bad advice than the guy who assembled the ROMs? Yeah, I know it's more work, but that's the price of being important and famous.

I've read and said what the hell... I decided to try the 6.1 anyway. Just finished the update and as always it takes 2 mem flushes and away you go. (At least on my 4700) I'v always had to do 2 flushes because it always seems to freeze on the first one. With this 6.1 when I tried to do the 2 flush it went dead....uh oh!!! So I removed the battery for about 10secs and did a flush right away...Tada!! It's Alive!! and 6.1 is working fine. I'm now gonna start loading all the apps and see how it runs!!

Wapser, are you sure you're using the right buttons? There are some people who clearly have not been. Just keep pressing iTask + Contacts + Reset every ten minutes or so, and it will most likely respond eventually. That is the experience of at least three of us. You can mess with the battery in between, but it might not be necessary.

Hi everyone,
I'm following the cradle method and have got as far as typing in lnb OS_WM6.nb0 but what should I be seeing on the IPAQ screen? It just sits there with USB atthe top, HP logo in the middle and v1.01 at the bottom.
I can see the command I typed on my laptop is doing something (unpacking?) but once it's finished unpacking is says "Done" and a couple of lines under that it says "Code entry point unknown"
Then I'm just left with the USB> prompt?
Please someone tell me what I'm supposed to see.

That's right and good. You just need to do a hard reset (as indicated in the manual or earlier here). It'll may ask for you to press calender to clear data so after you do that wait a sort while then use stylus to soft reset then soft reset again.

I've hard reset it and performed countless soft resets and it just waits at the first screen. The one that says it's version 2.01 in the bottom right corner.
I've not been asked to hold down the calendar button. Is there any way of manually envoking this?
Cheers.

When you do the hard reset you should not be able to turn on the ipaq without either doing soft reset or connect to power supply. Try, after hard reset, to turn on with normal on/off button, if it doesn't turn on that is good, but then remove or at least unlock the battery switch/lock, wait a minute, then put back to normal and connect to power supply and/or use stylus to soft reset.

Sorry but none of this is working for me. I'm stuck at the first boot screen. It says my firmware version is 2.01. Do I need to upgrade this with a different ROM before attempting the WM6 upgrade talked about in this thread?

Just to see what 6.1 has to offer I'm flashing the pdaviet version while I'm typing this. If it's good I'll wait for a working kozhura's edition. Otherwise back to his rev4 for me.
Great work Kozhura!!

Mmmmm! I assume we are not talking about WM6.1.... only WM6 version 3 or 4. Go back to either your original ROM from HP web side (2003) or an earlier ROM to get back to normal. I am waiting for 6.1 to be reposted.
Sorry!:(

Hey Smart Guy...
Sorry for the inconvenience that I may have caused you. I'm just in this for the fun of sticking it to HP so take a pill.
Anyone who wants to try WM6.1 now can use the pdaviet version until our best freind kozhura gives us somthing new to try out.
It's all a game boyz so lets keep it clean.
Happy Testing!!
Whilst I don't personally agree with Vulcan Tourist's methods, I do have to agree that your initial post was misleading; on a thread entitled '(kozhura Edition)' when no-one has flashed without creating a brick, your first post indicated a working version.

I'm quite accustomed to people disagreeing with my "methods", but usually I expect them to then also refuse to even consider the reason behind the method. Thanks for listening to the reason, Graham. I know I'm intolerant and perfectionist, but the targets of my ire need not feel so special because they haven't heard me berate myself when I'm careless or stupid. It ain't arrogance. It's high expectations. I've actually gone pretty easy on everyone... I've said nothing about spelling and grammar. :p
I have Release 4 reinstalled, and I belatedly bought a "premium" copy of Sprite Backup. Wish I'd done that before disaster struck day before yesterday. NOT looking forward to having to reinstall and recustomize everything, dozens of apps big and small. I'm not interested in trying the PDAVIET ROM, but I'd like to give Kozhura's next one a shot if I don't get too dependent on Release 4 again. Sprite Backup should I hope make that an easy choice?

Did you try or consider SPB Backup? I found it better than the Sprite version I had previously because with the Sprite I had, you still had to install Sprite before you could run your backup copy. With SPB Back up your backup is saved as an executable (backup-date.exe) file which you just explore to and run. You can of course rename it, like for example Backup-7-2-2008-4700WM6v4 etcetc. I got my SPB Backup using my ipaqchoice points aquired when I bought the ipaqs.

Sprite backup also has an option for storing an exe version and the option to store a copy of Sprite backup on the removable media as well. I just click on the backup exe file in the explorer window and it runs.

I've been using Sprite Backup myself, mostly because I was accustomed with it from the WM2003se release on our hx4700s. Thus far, with each successive re-flash of ROMs from WM5 to WM6 rev3...4... I did clean installs in the fear that something might not work right if I were to use a backup file.
Can somebody confirm for me that if I were to re-flash to any other version, up or down (I'm on rev4 currently) that I can use my backup files without problems?
Many thanks!
GSX600FMAN
7th February 2008, 06:36 PM
I cannot confirm either way. But it is wiser, if you have installed a new or different ROM to re-install all components & applications seperately as if new and do successive back-up's after loading each just to speed things up if there is a problem. Then after some time 'testing' you can delete the older obsolete backup's after making a full 'good one'.
Just my personal thoughts....

Hi ! (First post ever in this forum)
I just found this great rom and flashed it, i must say it works like a charm ! (from all of the bugs i only have the wireless one that you have to activate it twice before it works, but no problem)
Since i found some ppl wanting to know how speedy it could be i recorded a bit of the pda itself working with this great rom (i'm dying to try new wm6.1)
Greetings from Mexico !
Standard HX4700 with 64MB RAM (28.93MB free)
Running atached to the cradle (works the same with the battery anyway)
Rom is WM6_4700_RELEASE4
Using 1GB SD Card
The Koda Kumi Video is encoded at 950kbps divx (two pass) using Media Coder @ 360x240 and 128kbps mp3 audio (44khz, stereo)
BTW i'm using magicbutton (closes the programs when clicking the "X" instead of minimizing them) that's why it pauses a bit coz it closes the programs
Video (sorry no sound ^^) (http://youtube.com/watch?v=HgWwnKZLzb4)
Lol i just found out that the aspect ratio is fuck3d up (my first time uploading to youtube also, ill try to correct it later ^^)

Hope Kozhura wil come soon with a good version of 6.1.

It would depend upon exactly how much you back up, how files and data are structured in the filesystem and how much you might have customised some of that. I tend to wind up trying to move things around a lot (by tweaking the Registry, etc.), so I might have to stop that practice if I want to get full benefit of Sprite with respect to flashing and reverting back and forth. I have Spb Backup, too, but it doesn't have the option of backing up to a remote system AFAIK. I intend to "set it and forget it" to back up while it's cradled. I trust my RAID 5 array a lot more than any flash card.

You might want to try RealVGA 1.1, by Tobias Waldvogel, instead. I found it to be more stable and usable than OzVGA. I tried attaching it here, but the upload failed five times in a row. It debuted in an xda-developers thread on June 9th, 2007, though, so it should be easy enough to find:
xda-developers > Athena > Athena upgrading etc.
..... Real VGA
The filenames of the package are:
RealVGA_11.cab

ResPack96dpi.ARM.cab

Yep, RealVGA is much better. OzVGA has also the problem it's removable...
Something's not going like it should be.... I can only send the program CAB. The 96 and 128 respacks are not accepted for some reason.
You will need to look elsewhere for the respacks, sorry.....

Grant it that most members here had bricked their hx4700s with Kozhura's 6.1 upgrade .. perhaps due to errors in stallation .. or due to some glitch that Kozhura did not detect. But then, do we know what benefits / features this upgrade brings with it? We need more information, please.

I would suggest a random combination of the things that various people have said allowed them to get it back in bootloader mode: clean/hard reset button sequence, popping the battery for a while, letting the backup battery drain, and of course the bootloader button sequence. There's no reason to be superstitious about it and start trying fictitious sequences that don't do anything or offering up sacrifices of family pets to the tech gods. :p

I think it needs to be stated here, that it appears, that no-one has got this WM6.1 to work at all. So if you did originally download the 6.1, ditch it. Stick with your WM6.0 version 3 or 4 and wait for the link on the first page to WM6.1 to be reactivated to a download site by Kozhura. I'm sure 'K' will tell us it has been reloaded when he has fixed it.

I will upload it to megaupload for those that want the file, I downloaded it and installed it with no problems to my HX4700.
All works fine with the PDA, I am amazed that the ROM can be compressed to 35.1mb and yet decompresses to 127mb.
I will post the link when it finishes uploading....

well worth a donation to Chris for his work :)
I just put the PDA into bootloader mode. Connected it to my cradle. Placed the extracted ROM into a folder that has no spaces - eg d:\bootloader\ along with Chris's tool. Ran bootloader by double clicking on it, pointed it to the ROM and of it went to do it stuff :)
I used it on XP - read his instructions carefully...!!!!

This new rom from PDAViet works well on PDA, seems fast, with some nice new features, X now closes an app, but I've noticed that's it seems to be eating more memory, on clean install I'd say I'm missing about 5mb of memory, which is quite abit.
It will be interesting to see if kozhura's release will have a better impact on the memory.

It took about 10-15mins to flash
Runs really well, all apps open and close quickly, as meantioned before there's now an option to close an app when tapped the 'x'.
Wireless/bluetooth - works with no problems
The on screen keyboard has been tweaked and looks a bit like the resco version, but does not seem to be vga aware, and the letters/keys are pixulated, but usable.
And apart from the loss of about 5mb of memory (that I stated in a previous post) I'm very happy, seem to release memory after a program closes (not all of it but better than before), I suspect the 5mb is being used to increase the speed of the device, as mentioned earlier, every thing is quick, even whilst during a sync you can navigate the devices system.
Hope this helps - I'm not an expert, and I'm sure there will be a better release than the pdaviet, which will save on the memory issue.
But for me right now I'm very happy with the upgrade

I am not very sure, but maybe the 5MB "lost" memory has something to do with the fact that pdviet ROM has a 8MB pagepool (as opposed to 4MB pagepool of kozhura´s).

Hi everybody.
Could anyone give me a hint about where can I find this :mad:battery, please ?
It's a Varta 1.2 volts, 6.2mAh, supposed not to be used when running WM5 / WM6 for others than time'n date keeping.
The things is that mine is dead, and it happened at the same time my hx4700 died ... accepted reflashing a few times, (both WM5 and WM6 r4 ENG), but kept freezing after a while.
Now, I can't even get into Bootloader mode, except when connected to external power supply; that makes me guess that this tiny little b...attery is still used for something vital for system startup.
Of course, no one seems to be able to sell me that specific model, or an equivalent (rechargeable).
Suggestions ?

I love the speed of the mw6 release 4 upgrade but i have a problem. I cannot install a root certificate to the 4700 after the upgrade to wm6 it pops up a error that the certificate cannot be installed. I am able to install this root certificate to other wm6, and wm5 devices but not the 4700 after the update to wm6 rel 4. i need to install the root certificate to use our wireless. I have tried to hard reset and still have the error when installing the certificate.

Thanks for the information, but ... I forgot to mention I live in Nice, France. Hence, batt from US costs $15, and shipping $45.
I'm trying through their european resellers, but their sites are off ... remind me what chance is
Otherwise, for the strange behaviour, I'm just guessing, and trying to bring back to life what so far looks like a very expensive and useless piece of rubish. Should you have any idea/suggestion about my problem (see my few former posts exchanged with Comtech2005, around pages 200)

Pocket PC Techs "sold" me one weeks ago, but they didn't actually have any in stock. I got an e-mail admitting that after I'd placed the order. I might finally get it by the end of this month, I was told.
If that's the way they do business, I'll be damned if I'll be sending them my entire unit for a memory upgrade. Who knows when or if I would get it back.
And good grief... $45 for shipping something that small to Europe? It weighs how many grams? How many packages of that minuscule size and weight would it take to make the boat sink or keep the plane from taking off?

hx4700 forums are a small world indeed ... malheureusement, les infos disponibles sur ce lien ne mènent qu'à VARTA et ses OEM, l'option "pile de montre" n'étant pas envisageable voir même dangereuse ... la boucle est bouclée.
Anyway, after a few more tests'n ROM flashes, I'm about to throw this thing to the very next Pitbull passing by, and come back to plain PocketPP (pencil'n paper).
To make it short :
- used to run under WM2003 french. Good, but me idiot wanting to use some new software only WM5/WM6 compatible.
- tryed to find official HP WM5 french update; got a "sorry, hum...ah...duno" answer
- hit Kozhura's WM6 r4 ENG, and flashed it.
- Worked great with EVERYTHING (BT,WiFi, IrDA, CF, SD, ... MyScript, Tom Tom 6, ...Active Syn 4.5, OneNote Mobile, ...) for about a month, with a freeze every once in a while, solved with a Soft Reset.
- Picked it up one morning from USB craddle and froze instantly; blue'n white HP screen 2.01
- Power button not working/Clean Reset hunging up, no matter the choice
- Put into Bootloader mode, and flashed again WM6 r4 ENG. No changes, device not starting, no matter which and how many Resets done. Re flashed a few times, same result.
- Found on HP US site, a WM5, that I flashed with ChrisMRuLZ tool 'cus HP ones did not work. No comments ...
- WM5 worked for about 1 hour; gave me time to install my apps and synchro, and then froze.
- process again: flash WM6: no change
- process again: flash WM5: starts OK. Decided to flash WM6 r4 ENG directly after: worked fine
- installed part of my apps, and froze again, this time without even having had time to take off the craddle
- left it with no main and no backup batteries for 5 days; was hoping for those "shadow memories" to vanish.
- started whole process again: flash WM5 + flash WM6 r4 ENG. Worked OK for ... a good 5 minutes, and froze ...
- started searching for backup batt real use under WM5/WM6 (remebering very old PC behaving same way due to their motherboard BIOS backup battery beeing dead).
Supposedly useless, EXCEPT that the hx4700 just won't start without this battery, even with the main one in and connect to AC power. (at least mine does not)
- Guessed backup batt dead, and searched for new: found VARTA aftersales even whorse than HP, and still no replacement yet (sites advertising availability, but none with true stocks ... rogue business hu?)
- and now ?
well ... Santa Claus, IronMan, TheThing, ET or maybe one of those great XDA-dev techs will come with an idea (in the meantime, my 1 year old daughter might receive a new "look'ndestroy" toy tomorrow)

I'd like to revisit the issue of whether we can reasonably expect to see SDHC capability in hx4700s at some point with a ROM upgrade. Dirlan or someone told me earlier I was crazy and FOS for thinking such a thing was possible; he claimed that it would require modified hardware, not just firmware. I had already read hints that SDHC only required firmware/driver updating.
Here's an interesting ASUS support page I found; it's a list of firmware updates for the MyPal A626 PDA:
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
Following the reverse chronology of the ROM updates, ASUS released a WM6 upgrade for the A626 in July of last year, but then in August they re-released it with changes that just happened to include SDHC support.
Now, if SDHC depends on supporting hardware different from what is required for SD, and given that ASUS has made it clear that this unit is capable of supporting SDHC media, then WHY did that SDHC support only appear after both the WM6 ROM and a further ROM update?
I think that might mean that only the firmware update was required, and that the SD hardware in the A626 is effectively the same as what's in the hx4700. I think it might mean that we can remain optimistic about it. Kozhura himself opened the door to the notion earlier, as I recall.
Indeed, in a forum thread about SDHC support for the Palm Treo 650 (http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?t=132339&page=2), someone had this to say:
indeed. i contacted the SD Card Association and they said very rarely is hardware upgrades required for the SDHC upgrade. only a driver upgrade which is the responsibility of the manufacturer.
Nope, doesn't sound impossible to me at all.

Just to clarify from what I have read here, PDAviet in general is a Vietnamese forum similar to Xda-Developers. For users here specifically in this thread, PDAviet is associated with WM6.1 for the hx4700 and it is an alternative to Kozhura's WM6.1 as of now. The link to this PARTICULAR rom is found at the top of PG 219 for those who want it (this isn't Kozhura's work).
So I must comment on what a DRASTIC improvement Kozhura's WM6 rev. 4 rom is over the original WM5 update from HP, and better yet let alone WM2003SE. I originally updated my hx4700 with the HP's WM5 update but it was honestly a horrible decision and performance, so I downgraded back to WM2003SE.
As of yesterday, i upgraded my hx4700 with Kozhura's WM6 rev. 4 rom from WM2003SE and WOW I really can't comment on what an immediate improvement it is!!! :D Yes, for those who want to upgrade from the original WM2003SE to Kozhura's WM6rev.4, they can absolutely do it! Menus and applications really fly by and open! I'm really impressed with it's performance and better yet, VERY VERY impressed by Kozhura's work!!! :)
For those recently new here, I stumbled upon a great tutorial on how to flash the hx4700 with the WM6rev.4 rom and it worked flawlessly for me! Complements to Chrismrulz from the Brighthand forum.
Flashing Tutorial with Bootloader.exe (http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=246529)
So for now, I've been reading that users who updated with Kozhura's WM6.1 seems to brick their hx4700, and this probably isn't advisable (but correct me if i'm wrong ).
But all in all, great compliments go to Kozhura, as his WM6rev.4 ROM has really really breathed new life in my HX4700! Also, thanks to those who had their positive input as well. I can't wait for Kozhura's WM6.1!
Good luck and have fun flashing! :D

There's sadly one thing we can't push: the limit of 802.11b wireless, and the old Bluetooth standard. No mere firmware upgrade will get us to even 11g much less 11n or beyond, or Bluetooth 2.0. Gotta live with those. :( It's still got the big screen, only topped by the newest "Travel Companions" which are really navigation appliances; the fast CPU, not dual-core like the newest ones but still second best; the adequate RAM that can be upgraded; and those dual card slots. If SDHC support appears, you can run out and buy both 32GB CF and SDHC cards and have the equivalent of an SSD in the thing.

btw, there is a registry hack for 802.11g. It doesn't boost the performance to G , but only allows connections to G networks when those are not allowed (?) I don't know the actual reg editing, I just do it in skTools, I'll see if I can find that somewhere.

Kozhura (or anyone else if they know)
Do you use beta testers for your new ROMs?
I'm certainly not fishing to be one as I don't have the time, but back in my XDA Exec days I was a beta tester for JCWrights with his new ROMs and like to think I contributed in a small way to his fantastic ROMs (I, with others, only suggested potential improvements, he did the real work).
I just think that if you did have a willing bunch of nutters ;) that are willing to risk a brick and test a new ROM to destruction, you could share the pain and know a ROM is fully working before you release it.
I now sit down to be flamed by some smartarse. :p

You cannot brick the PDA because you can always "re flash " it.
:)So if one of the rom version are "buggy" all you need to do it is to revert to the "old " rom
tested over 50 times ( with 4700 )

Vulcan,
As far as I remember, I don't use language as 'crazy' or ??FOS ??, but I know for sure it's NOT working.
Go check for yourself at : http://www.sdcard.org/about/sdhc/
Maybe someone should make this link available (sticky) to all who have the same question over and again.

Hi guys, I am not a deep technician, but it is possible to unpack the hx4700 WM6.1 ROM and rebuild it for hx2700 ?

That's only a slightly different link than the first useless one you claimed as proof. If you actually think this link provides definitive proof that it won't work, you really, truly, definitively don't know enough to have an opinion on this subject. Please stop claiming you do until you can can actually provide evidence. The links I provided, especially the second one, are closer to what "proof" looks like: actual WORKING SDHC support for a device that previously lacked it, done with a mod that did NOT include any hardware changes, and complete with a statement from its author that completely contradicts your implied "proof" here. The real core change underpinning SDHC is the FILE SYSTEM used - FAT32 versus FAT12/16 - and that doesn't require a hardware upgrade (except in the SD device itself).

Yes, and No. Not without significant modifications, and it's possible that a device may simply lack the physical specs to support a more advanced Windows Mobile, in the same way that most older desktop systems are unable to run Vista. Some people like Kozhura might know how to do it, if it's even feasible for a given device, but there's a point of diminishing returns with such back-porting (picture trying to run Windows XP on a Pentium II system). If a WM6 back-port hasn't already been attempted by someone (I'm assuming you've already searched all the possible places), it's a good indication that either it can't be done or isn't practical to do.

BTW,both SD and SDHC use FAT32 asfar as I know.Besides,if that were the difference than this would probably have been solved long ago.The difference between the cards is in the ?"addressing"?,which sounds to me like a firmware issue.

My 4700 gets this (constant) message warning (when my battery drops to 30%): "Backup battery very low. To prevent possible data loss, replace or recharge your battery according to the owner's manual."
Is this mean I need a new backup battery replacement? And if so, what type of battery do I need to purchase, and where?
Thanks a million!

Tnx for proving you're a moron. If the specifications from SDcard.org aren't good enough, then what should they put on their website ? Something like 'Dear User, we only sell nonsense to trick you in buying new hardware' ? Or do you really belief they don't know their own standards and design ?
Besides, as Tapdov pointed out, both SD and SDHC use FAT32. The difference is : SD uses BLOCKWRITING, while SDHC uses BITWRITING.
And I repeat another time : the hx4700 was already out of production long before SDHC standard was set. So if you can get SDHC cards working on your device, be my guest ... I just wants to know how long it'll last.

You may first check it through your battery gauges, somewhere in "Settings/System/Batteries", or by tapping on the Battery icon on your "Today" display. There are two of them: the one above for the main batt, and the oen bellow for the NiMH backup button cell batt.
The model is VARTA V6HR, 1.2 Volts 6.2 mAh, rechargeable. Size is 2.1 mm height and 6.7 mm diameter. DO NOT try to replace it by a non rechargeable one, as it will blow up at one point or other ...
Trouble is to find this particular model: it is an HP OEM design, manufactured by VARTA, and damn hard to find so far. A few US sites are reporting it on stock for about $15, but when you confirm order they show "not available at the moment" ... and still ask you $49 to have it sent to Europe (I dond't know where you live)
I'm actually waiting for an answer from VARTA Microbatteries France; they've been telling that one of their resellers "might" have some spares. I'll keep this forum informed when I know more.
Please be so kind to leave me a post, should you finally find a stock, or an equivalent model.
Cheers

Yeah, I might have overstated the importance; it's required but not the only change. For SD it might be optional, but apparently for SDHC it's mandatory regardless of capacity (or perhaps the SDHC designation will simply never be given to any card less than 2GB). According to that Treo thread, two of the files involved in the mod were the removal of FATFS.prc from ROM and the addition of FAT32.prc. Guess what those files do?

I think the warning you mention actually refers to the main battery, not the backup battery? If so, it's the main battery that needs replacing. This is common; it's exactly what was happening to me: my hx4700 was dying suddenly when the battery capacity still appeared to be at 20%. Your situation sounds like it might be the same symptom. The backup battery normally can never lose charge as long as the main battery still holds one, since the backup is charged from the main.

I was told by PPC Techs that they will actually have them in stock at the end of this month. I've let my order stand because of their quick confession, but I'm still pissed that they're deceptive and lure people into placing orders for out of stock items.

Thanks, but you appear to have missed my point; bricked or just needing a reflash (which all appear to have done) is a debate over terminology.
If it had been beta tested, 6.1 wouldn't have been such an anti-climax...

You can check your battery stats @ Start | Settings | Power.... On the Main tab, check the actual status of the battery. On the Advanced tab, you can check how long your backup battery will hold your data before system-breakdown. If it's less then 72 hrs. you'll need a replacement. Try to find a Varta V6 HR rechargeable Ni-MH (1.2V 6mAh).
Beware : you'll need some special tool too : a T5 torx screwdriver. Read here howto : http://pdasmart.zftp.com/instructions/hx47xx_disassembly_06.pdf
Also : when you do this, you'll lose all your data as if you do a hard reset. Be sure to make a backup before you proceed.

Hello,
You can also look here for another howto http://paulstravelpictures.com/HP-iPAQ-HX4700-PDA-Backup-Battery-Replacement-Guide/index.html
And for the battery look here: http://www.pdasmart.com/ipaq-battery-center.htm?gclid=CNPZl46pwpECFQ5OQgodSlA2DQ Battery $20.00 and shipping costs $24.00 = total $44.00.
