N.B. Disclaimer - try at your own risk - i am not responsible for anything that happens to your device.
Tools needed (all attached)
1. Winimage - open extended_rom.nb with this to view contents. (winimage is a trial but lasts 30 days of use i.e. only the days you use it)
2. Dark simpsons - Htc Rom Tool - use nb to make nbh for flashing
3. Dutty's tool - to extract os.nb (windows.nb) and extended_rom.nb from rom nbh file
(note os.nb can be left out if your simply modifying existing extended rom)
STEPS
1. Open extended_rom.nb with winimage - remove any cabs programs you dont want in your ext rom.
2. Extract config.txt to desktop - this gives instructions on which cabs etc to install.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/meschle/PICTURE1-1.png
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/meschle/picture3.png
3. Edit config.txt - add name of cabs in same format as shown
e.g. one i did for the touch but never used
LOCK:Enabled
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Customization_1.cab
LOCK: Disabled
RST: Reset
Second line is to install a cab
Lock enabled. lock disabled, rst reset always needs to be included.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/meschle/picture6.png
4. Add cabs via winimage - inject or drag and drop
5. Delete old config.txt and inject or drag and drop new one.
6. Right click on cabs and config.txt in winimage and set 'read only' (other wise cabs will deleted from ext rom after install)
To resize extended rom - use Image - Change format
7. Save and exit winimage.
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/meschle/Capture-1.png
8. Extract windows.nb from your rom using dutty's tool (enclosed) - rename os.nb. (note os.nb can be left out if your simply modifying existing extended rom)
9. Open Dark simpsons htc rom rool -rom builder - choose artemis, select System - os.nb (nb see note in step 8), ExtRom - choose your extended_rom.nb
10. Save and rom tool will make Your rom.nbh
11. Then you can flash as normal with rom update utility.
Thanks to faria for images and info that i based this tutorial on.
I've included an empty (apart from config.txt) 2mb extended rom.nb that you can use and add files too.

what is the max. ext_rom area size?
regards,
Largest ext rom i've seen 15mb (smallest in winimage - image - change format = 160kb) - i would use the smallest that you need.

And what about a new tutorial for newbies to make Roms ?
:D :D

Newbies should'nt be making rom :D
This is my theory for a newbie who has such ambitions - take this path.
1. Successfuly edit registry
2. Unlock and flash cooked rom
3. Cook extended rom
4. Learn how to make cab files
5. Decompile nbh into nb's and compile new nbh with different nb's
6. After these 5 steps are completed newbie will no longer be a newbie and ready to cook a rom - it doesnt matter which order thats done in its just a guide - also cab making is not absolutely essential but preferable.

Hi Meschle, I will attempt to get to 3, so here's my question, is it possible to make items from the extended rom install onto the sd card or just the device? also, if the cabs are deleted after install, is the memory they occupied then free for storage? Thanks.
meschle
4th September 2007, 06:57 PM
Hi uniqueboy - there is a way to force cabs to storage card using a xml cab - have not tried it myself for storage card but have for main memory - so really ext rom is for main memory only installation. If you do not put a read only marker on your cab its deleted but usually the ext rom becomes corrupted so nonuse-able.

hi meschle. Thanks for your tutorial.
is there a way to make a extended_rom.nb file from scratch (file, new) with Winimage by throwing-in cabs and config.txt and saving, with whatever parameters and naming as extended_rom.nb ?
I´ve managed to copy to desktop PC my extended_rom by using total commander, but from reading yor tutorial it seems that we need a ROM Dump to start with. If this is the case...would you please also tell us which is the simplest/safest way to dump a device ROM?
Thanks again

Yes you always need an extended_rom.nb to start with - use duttys tools to extract all the nb's from the nbh - its quite easy.
I'll post the 2mb extended_rom.nb so people can use it as a template.

but how can we get our own device ROM dumped into an nbh?
WIKI refers to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1155823#post1155823
which deals with extracting just the extended rom nb from the device (in quite a complex way). I ´d like to dump the whole ROM NBH in order to get the ext rom nb by using dutty tools, and follow your thread.

Lets say i take your nb file, open with winimage, delete all your files, throw in my extended_rom files (copied to PC with total commander), and save....
Have i arrived to the same extended_rom that i have on my device?

It is not easy converting a dump into a nb\nbh - i would strongly suggest getting hold of original rom if you can. You can make an extended rom using the nb i posted but you need the os.nb to make a flashable nbh - extended rom will not flash on its own.

This is config.txt from my stock ROM:

Could i get more memory in device by deleting those 7 cabs from extended_Rom and having them in storage card root, being automatically run (installed) on Hard reset?

You could flash nbh with no ext_rom whatsoever or use smaller extended rom nb attached - but you still need original rom to do this. If you just delete the cabs out of the extended rom you have - it stays the same size - the nb is a fixed size.

That´s understood.
My question now is about flashing an extended_rom with a config.txt file pointing to cabs outside extended_rom (in storage card):
Would that do the trick?
The problem I see using /2577 folder as workaround is that it runs every time you insert the storage card (And i´m not sure if it also requires operator action for every cab being run)

That will not work - cabs have to be in extended_rom.
Most of the cabs you listed will have no destination dialog so will install without any user input using the \2577 method - you could disable it until you needed by renaming autorun.exe to autorun.txt.

As there are lines in stock ROM config.txt pointing to windows folder...
(as CAB: \Windows\PP_CommManager_Patch_060808.CAB)
Perhaps you mean : "cabs cannot be in external storage"?

I get your point - i've never seen anybody do that - it is probable that when the ext rom is initialized storage card has not yet booted and so it will not work. Worth a go though but device may just crash at that point.

meschle:
great tutor.
if i can make few comments, they might be useful for ext_ROM makers.
- you can flash just ext_ROM. no need to include OS in .nbh, you can have both, but it will just flash longer.
when you flash ext_ROM, device will be re-initialized after the flashing. consider as hard reset (save data before flashing ext_ROM). it is not the case for example when you flash radio;
- in order to flash ext_ROM, device should be cid unlocked or with USPL installed;
it was a question somewhere if it is possible to install sw (software) from Storage Card.
yes, you can install sw from Storage Card. card is already initialized when customization takes place (installation of ext_ROM).
please keep in mind following:
- to install sw from Storage Card, sw should be located on Storage Card;
- normally sw which you install, should be signed with certificate. if this is not the case then include Cert_SPCS.cab in ext_ROM and have this .cab to be installed first (first line in config.txt)
example:
LOCK:Enabled
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cert_SPCS.cab
CAB: \Extended_ROM\PP_AKv30-DefaultPage_ALL.CAB
..............
- use correct syntax in config.txt;
- sw still installed on main memory;
example: you wish to install BatteryStatus on Storage Card.
1. Copy BatteryStatusExt.1.04.build_0240.CAB to \Storage Card\Installs directory (this is example, could be any directory). i mean file should be on Storage Card in directory of your choice, before you flash the device.
2. include line in config.txt
CAB: \Storage Card\Installs\BatteryStatusExt.1.04.build_0240.CAB
your final config.txt will be something like this:
LOCK:Enabled
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cert_SPCS.cab
CAB: \Storage Card\Installs\BatteryStatusExt.1.04.build_0240.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\PP_AKv30-DefaultPage_ALL.CAB
XML: \Extended_ROM\PP_ExtVer.xml
EXEC:\Extended_ROM\ChgScutAttri.exe
LOCK Disabled
RST: Reset
please don't forget to use correct syntax related to your country ROM.
you can't use "Storage Card" on Russian, Spanish or French ROM, it will name differently.
guess what will happen if you forgot to install micro SD card before flashing? yes, it will not work :)
you will get error message during customization process and will need to re-flash ext_ROM again.
you can only have sw in ext_ROM which does not produce dialog windows after installation, otherwise it will not install.
re: there is copy command available, if someone need it. you can have it in config.txt.
CPY1:\Extended_ROM\Info.txt
CPY2:\Storage Card\Install\Info.txt
this will copy Info.txt included in your ext_ROM to Storage Card during customization process.

Good info thanks! I have been meaning to edit the st concerning the os.nb inclusion.
If you already have an extended rom on your device then yes you can just flash extended rom, but if you don't you need to include os.nb in the nbh otherwise it will not flash. Most of the cooked roms here are os only roms so if you wanted to add an extended rom you'll have to include os.nb for it to flash.
Cheers for the input!

Then, if we have a piece of software which installs OK from extended_Rom,we can have it installed also from SD card!
So we are able to achieve same config as brand new, but with minimum Extended_ROM(no Cabs inside), getting more free memory!!!
and cookers of ROMs dont need to cook a new ext_ROM whenever an app that they include in their custom ROM is updated by the developer, as long as the updated Cab keeps original name!!!

This is getting more interesting every minute.
Question, I tried to open an (official) extended rom with WinImage from a Trinity. The first rom gave an error. The second was excepted by WinImage, but no files are shown.
I can’t see why this wouldn’t work. Any suggestions?

Looks like it's just an empty one. That is if ext rom's are fixed size?

Yes they are fixed size whether empty or not so use the smallest for your requirements.

I must say that since I started to use the Extended_ROM for my own customisations its' dimension grew slowly from 2M to 9.25M (I still have .32M free) without any drop in performance or other bad side effects.

Thank you Meschle for this awesome tutorial!
I followed your instructions step by step and successfully flashed a 2 MB Extended Rom on my Artemis. However, while some 12MB are freed up, I'm quite surprised not to see any effect on the storage memory (still 32.45 MB). I've searched the whole forum and Internet but nobody seems to encounter this issue.
What did I miss? Does it have something to do with the pagepool size?

Can you give your total storage memory and free strorage memory. Pagepool affects program memory not storage. Yes the official htc has a rather large ext rom at 15mb so cutting it down to 2mb should free up 12-13mb.

I reckon you just used extended rom.nb to make nbh and flash - right?
You'll have to extract os.nb as described and add ext rom.nb to make a new nbh and flash - then the size of ext rom on device will change.

I reckon you just used extended rom.nb to make nbh and flash - right?
You'll have to extract os.nb as described and add ext rom.nb to make a new nbh and flash - then the size of ext rom on device will change.
Thank you Meschle,
using the tools your provided and carefully following your instructions I was able to build a new WM6 ROM with a small 2MB Extended ROM, the latest Radio (2.98.90), and SPL 1.11.
Now there are 45.25 MB left for storage memory on my Artemis. It has never run so fast!
It needs to be said: if you try to gain some extra Storage Memory by flashing a small Extended ROM, then you should not bypass the 8th point of Meschle's great tutorial, i.e. include "Windows.nb" as well as your cooked "ExtendedRom.nb" in the final .nbh file even if you already have an Extended ROM on your device.

Well, if you only need to have more storage then you can just remove software you don't need from the rom and if your rom file is to small to flash just go to this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332863) thread and followqs the steps there.
You'ill have more then 54 mb of free storage.

Are you sure about extended rom minimum size of 2MB?
I resized my extrom to 720KB (exactly fitted my needs) and flashed successfully with uncooked wwe wm6 OS. Customization worked after flash, and after hard reset too.

Browny, two questions for you:
1) How did you resize your Extended ROM ? I used Meschle's empty Extended ROM as a basis to create mine and as result it is 2MB in size even though there is only 900kB of data in it.
2) Have you noticed any decrease in battery life? After flashing my new Extended ROM it seemed the battery life was substantially shorter (less than 24 hours in normal use). The new Extended ROM does not seem to be corrupted (all files appearing and customization working).
Regards,
lalt
Edit - Found the answer to the 1st question: open the Extended ROM with Winimage, go to the "Image" tab, then click "Change format". Now you can select whatever "Standard format" you want.
browny
13th October 2007, 03:30 PM
Yes, to resize use Image/Change format. Probably you can play with custom size, if standard sizes fit poorly.
My idea of making ExtRom is to place in it only essential patches/software, then in case of hard reset you get working device without wasting storage space. The rest could be moved to flash card or downloaded from PC.
I removed from original ExtendedRom cabs which were not necessary - TomTom, IE startup page and enabling power tabs in backlight (>50KB to add one registry value!).
Therefore it should not create any power-related issues, except maybe after flashing battery measurement may be incorrect and needs recalibration - full discharge and then full charge.
Also check if you have any unneeded applications running in background.

My idea of making ExtRom is to place in it only essential patches/software
That's axactly what I am seeking to do. And I back up your finding: 2MB is definitely not the minimum available size for the Extended ROM.
Therefore it should not create any power-related issues
Some people here have experienced battery life issues due to their flashing cooked Extended ROM. After some research I have found that I was not part of them. The drop I have noticed in the battery life is related to the normal functioning of WM6 which seems to be more hungry for battery power than WM5.

flashed and it worked.
but I have some problems when I try to decrease the large of it.

as i said in other posts, i intend to keep original HTC WM6 ROM but getting a much smaller ExtendedROM to increase storage memory. The only way to get the extraspace appears to be not only flashing a smaller ExtROM, but also flashing the OS at same time. (So: the nbh file must include OS nb & ExtendedRom nb)
my first quest was obtaining the original nbh file: well, just opening the WM6 update *.exe file from HTC with Winrar did the trick.
I decompiled it with dutty tools to *. nb, and recompiled both original OS nb and 2mb ExtRomt to nbh as per Meschle first post.
keeping in mind that the OS is the original, i didnt UPSL, and at 3% i got the dreaded 270 error "image file corrupt"
does that error means that, even changing only the extROM and using original OS nb, i have to UPSL first?
Thanks in advance
EDIT: once UPSLED, I was able to flash the stock HTC ROM with small 2mb extended_ROM (so no longer considered by device as "stock"!)

you need to have USPL installed for the following reason:
when you compile rom into nbh format, file is not signed with htc certificate, so it will not flash without uspl.

i would like to mention few things for you to check.
1. Cert_SPCS.cab should be first in the list of installed programs in config.txt:
LOCK:Enabled
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cert_SPCS.cab
CAB: \Extended_ROM\HTC_SIM_Manager 6.31.cab
.
.
.
EXEC:\Extended_ROM\ChgScutAttri.exe
LOCK:Disabled
RST: Reset
2. check properties of all your files in .nb file, they should be archive and read-only
3. some software will not installed. i think mentioned this before. if software after installation, displays a dialog (like select a language or accept a license agreement), it will not be installed from extended rom. because you don't have an option to interact during customization. consider config.txt as a unattended script.
4. how do you check that software is not installed? it may not be listed in remove programs list, but could be installed.

lock..
rst..
Now the cabs install by itself....

Btw, I have just flashed your version 3 rom and exploring it the past 2 days and so far realised that the backlight turned off quite fast even though I had set it to max 5 mins. Didn't stayed on even with the untick option. But never mind. Small matter. Help save battey power anyway. Still a great ROM to play with. More interesting than playing pocket pc games. ;)

hi, hrmm, after having a little play, and realising with frustration i cannot edit the windows rom (the whole reason i was looking at this to take out some of the extra files that aren't needed, or at least i think they aren't!)
if i replace SPL.nb with the SPL in the USPL thing, and then replace the radio.nb with the latest radio file, resize the extended rom, add the shdc cab, would that just create a wm 02 rom with hte latest radio, spl and sdhc support, but have slightly more free space as the extended rom would be resized smaller?
sorry if this question seems stupid, its just I'd like to have an 'upto date' o2 rom so i can reflash my phone to get rid of unesscary files i've installed and not have to update little things like the radio or the sdhc support
Also, is there a tool avaliable to edit the wm rom or is that a really advanced thing I shouldn't even be thinking about type of thing?
also, the 02 wm6 rom has g3ipl and & g4ipl, how do i know which one to include? or am i being silly and you just leave that?...

Just place the nbh file in the same folder as the RUU - as long its the only nbh file in the folder the RUU will flash it.

You could flash nbh with no ext_rom whatsoever or use smaller extended rom nb attached - but you still need original rom to do this. If you just delete the cabs out of the extended rom you have - it stays the same size - the nb is a fixed size.
The option to change the size is grayed out on my PC... I'm trying to find a way to make this work on the Herald, too. It's almost like if the Hearld is just a GPS-Less Artemis... with a spring loaded keyboard.

The Artemis and the Herald both use NBH's, they both have the same 50mb file size requirement for the os.nb file within its nbh. I hope that the extROM setup is similar enough to allow us to shrink it... *crosses fingers*
What I REALLY want is to go around that 50mb size requirement...

Dear Meschle,
I am fond of your ROM and I have been using latest 4.02. But as I said in my earlier replies, I am having trouble with installing extended rom. I can flash it on my device but it doesn't get installed automatically. I can see it in Total Commander but it doesn't get installed.
I tried several methods but none of them are working. In parallel I was reading your some of replies and in one of them you have mentioned that your ROM do not support Extended Rom. Also I found that your default Comm is set to Storage Card and not exended rom. Is this a limitation? Does it means if I use your latest 4.02 ROM, I cannot have Extended Rom, Is there any way I can change the "Comm" registery setting. I tried it but it says access denied. I tried changing the provxml also but no luck.
Present ROM registery looks like this,
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm]
"AutoRunType"=dword:0
"AutoRunCFG"="\\Storage Card\\SDConfig.txt"
"AutoRun"="\\Storage Card\\autorun.exe"

Newbies should'nt be making rom
This is my theory for a newbie who has such ambitions - take this path.
1. Successfuly edit registry
2. Unlock and flash cooked rom
3. Cook extended rom
4. Learn how to make cab files
5. Decompile nbh into nb's and compile new nbh with different nb's
6. After these 5 steps are completed newbie will no longer be a newbie and ready to cook a rom - it doesnt matter which order thats done in its just a guide - also cab making is not absolutely essential but preferable.

hi,
is there a way to make a extended_rom.nb file from scratch (file, new) with Winimage by throwing-in cabs and config.txt and saving, with whatever parameters and naming as extended_rom.nb ?
I´ve managed to copy to desktop PC my extended_rom by using total commander, but from reading yor tutorial it seems that we need a ROM Dump to start with. If this is the case...would you please also tell us which is the simplest/safest way to dump a device ROM?
Thanks again

Mr. Makk has created a complete tutorial on how to customize and cook on your Windows Mobile device, with tips such as how to customize ownership & ROM version Info, welcome screen settings options, changing soft key button mappings for Titanium, Manila, and Default home screen, disabling/enabling Titanium plug ins, deleting an existing default registry entry, customizing date time format and regional settings, and customizing phone call and bluetooth settings while cooking your Windows Phone ROM can be found on this tutorial amongst many others.

@Arjunsm
if you want an easier way on how to make an extended rom, just pm me dude an ill write you an easier tutorial, ive learnt quite a few tricks since i was a noob :p
btw, yeah it can be flashed with sd card, you must lable the .nbh rom file to "ARTEIMG.nbh".
if it wont flash via micro sd, you need to format the micro sd to FAT32.
