Hi all!

I try since 3 days to connect my Trinity with my XP Pro - no chance

I found no complete "How to do" on this forum and also not on Google.

Could please someone post all the settings on the Trinity ( Computer:, User name:,Password, Domain ) and what to do exactly on the XP Pro.

I have a D-Link Router ( I believe I must open Port 3889 - but itīs hard because there are some strange settings [ destination - source .... ].

Please :)

Best regards
Gregor

ok i supposed that u want to says Dlink DI624!

http://www.dlink.it/archivos/2333-750-Imagen/di-624_2.jpg

but if its another model the configuration must be the same...so later i post screenshot...
So i presume that the RDP service on your winXP is active and the SP2 firewall accept RDP entrance connections...i'm right?

P.S. Have u the last Firmware?

On my ADSL router:

In/Out port 3389 TCP
In/Out port 1789 TCP

Destination IP adres is my server IP adres
(no source adres)

yep the new firmware delete your settings...u can make a backup of the settings?

SO! go in the admin page of your router...
In Advanced / Virtual Server

Name: MyRDP
Private IP: type ipconfig on your RDPcomputer to know its ip adress
Protocol Type: TCP
Private Port: 3389
Public Port: 3389
Schedule: always

verify the rules
In Advanced / Firewalls...

Done !

But still my Trinity shows me following message :

Cannot connect. Likely reasons are:
1. Specified computer name or ip does not exist
2.A network error occurred while establishing the connection.

The IP ist only the first line under ipconfig - right ?
( subnet and standardgateway is not relevant ).

Concerning your former post :

- I activated both ticks on my XP Pro : remote support plus remote desktop
I named a remote user - in my case it is "Administrator". XP says that "Administrator" is in use even if its not named but I have named itin the user box. Also I have set a password for "Administrator".

- My XP firewall is not activated because I have a router firewall !

Something wrong till yet ?

If u are on HOME LAN the ip adress is what u can see with ipconfig...
If u are on Internet the ip adress is a pubblic IP that u can see on router...or if u use DynamicDNS like DynDNS...

@kheops

hmmmm.... please try to do not irritate me with too much informations  :)

I have to fill in the ip address of the first line : 192.168.0.2 - correct ?

On my Trinity I have to fill in the ip address or can I name my Computer as written in "name" of router settings ( Virtual and Firewall ) ?

One more stupid question :

I start WLAN on my Trinity and wait until the Trinity connected with my WLAN Router DI-624. Then I start Remote Desktop Mobile on my Trinity - fill in the computer name - fill in my computer account name "Administrator" - then my password - domain box remains empty. Then connect / and only the error message will follow.

Now my question: How does the Trinity knows - only with my computer name - where in the whole wide web he will find my computer here in my office ???

May be its not such thrilling if I´m logged in on my WLAN Router in my office where the XP Pro is connected to the Router too - but how does this work if my Trinity is logged in a WLAN on Starbucks or somewhere else ???

I overlooked something - right :(

where?...scuse me but u must be more precise there are too much variable...

just ip adress...
sample: if your computer is 192.168.0.2 fill it in the rdp client (only if u are in the LAN home!!!in fact only in your lan your computer is know as XXX name... )

Its a bit complicated to talk about DNS(my limit is my english...:D)
u just to know that if u want to fill in your rdpclient adress a name u must use a DynamicDNS that your router use
TOOLS /MISC -> Dynamic DNS...because i presume that u dont have a static public ip adress with your Internet provvider....see www.dyndns.org

u can see your dynamic ip adress in
STATUS
ip adress [WAN]

@kheops

O.K. - now I believe slowly that I have to differentiate between logged in with Trinity per WLAN on my Router itself ( is this "home LAN" ? ) and logged in on a external WLAN.

What are the differences in settings on my Trinity

Sometimes I believe that I have understood - only the recognize some minutes later that there are much more difficulties to solve

Gregor

P.S.: Where to fill in IP ? .... I thought on " Remote Desktop Mobil" on my Trinity behind "Computer:" - correct ?

FOR CONNECTING OUTSIDE UR LAN:
What u have to do is connect to the ouside (WAN) address of ur router. This is the the IP address u have to fill in ur remote desktop to connect to. Go to www.whatsmyip.net on ur home pc to find out whats ur WAN address

U configure ur router to forward the specific port (in this case 3389) to the IP address of ur computer(be sure u have a static ip address).

FOR CONNECTING WITHIN UR LAN(same IP range):
just fill the ip addres of the host.

Hi all helping friends!

Now I have set my router to a static IP ( the current one which i found on these ip-finder-side ).

By the way : Do I have disadvantages with a static IP ?

I also have additional enabled under Advanced / Firewall these IP with port 3389 !

I cannot additional enable these static IP under "Virtual" settings on my router - īve got a message that there is a conflict with something.

Then I have put these static IP on my Trinity behind "Computer:" - but still no chance to connect to my XP !!!

There is only now a third error message : May be too much connections!

:( :( :(

I'm not sure that u can change ip adress to dynamic to static...without consequence...

Indeed... u need to set a static address at the host(pc u want to take over) not the router.

The only thing u want to do on the router is forward port 3389 to to that specific static address u just set on the host ;)

Hi!

O.K. - I setted the Router back to Dynamic IP !

But I have a static IP on my XP Pro already : This is the mentioned 192.168.0.2 !

There is another setting on my pc right below the static IP setting box - its called DNS server address : 194.25.2.xxx

Is that the correct number which I must use on my Trinity ????

noo...

thats the DNS server ur pc connects to to resolve a name :P

When u sit at the host pc and go to www.whatsmyip.net u see a IP address on the top of the screen.

Thats the ip address u have to use on ur trinity when ur at the office.
When ur at home u just use 192.168.0.2 ;)

And what I have exactly to do that these IP on the top of the IP-finder-site is ever the same ???

Start - network - show networks - right click on LAN network - settings ..... and then ?

1 thing are the @ip adress of your lan that's are called private ip....
u can manage it as u want...
sample :

router :
ip : 192.168.0.254 (private adress on internal interface)
subnet 255.255.255.0
[dns1/2 : dns of your internet provider this are public ip adress]

your router can also do to DHCP server : allocate ip adress in your Home lan to other...(but set it dhcp is optional)
u can set it to 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.110 range
with gateway as 192.168.0.254(your router!!!)
and the dns1/2 : dns of your internet provider

RDP-PC : static ip
ip : 192.168.0.10
subnet : 255.255.255.0
gtw : 192.168.0.254 (your router!!!)
dns1/2 : dns of your internet provider

when
u connect with WiFi the trinity is the same thing as a computer
OR u set a static ip adress
or if your router is DHCP enabled the trinity give an adress fron router...

so at this point open rdp client and set in the adress 192.168.0.10
with or without user/password/domain...

Your router have another IP adress is the ip adress give by the internet provider...called public adress on the external interface...
this IP adress in the 99.9% of the HOME ADSL dynamic...
your internet provider change the ip adress of your modem...maybe 1 time in a day...
but if u use an dynamic dns (u must freely subscribe an account on dyndns or other...and setup your router with the account made) after u can (for example) ping your router with a your choice dns name (define in the dyndns or other site) like MyHomeRouter.dyndns.org
or in the RDP client (when u are in other place)

sorry for the english...

No thats allright.. u don't have to change that if u allready configured a static ip addres.

the ip address www.whatsmyip.net shows is your "public ip address". This is the the IP address given by your internet provider. This address is the public representation of ur network at home. Usually its an dynamic address but it doesnt have to change that often. In my case, it didn't change the last 3 years :D

In fact this is the address assigned to the WAN interface of ur router. So what u need to do is let the router know that every thing that is marked by rdp (port 3389) must be forwarded to the host pc (192.168.0.2?). thats why you need to configure the port forwarding on ur router ;)

Now, when u are at the office, meaning outside ur LAN, u connect to ur "public ip address" in order to connect with the host pc at home, then the router forwards all this traffic to ur host pc and back ;)

So in Summary:
- Set a static IP at the host pc
- configure the router to forward all incoming traffic from the internet that is passing through port 3389, to the host pc
- get to know ur public IP address
- fill in that address in remote desktop on ur trinity
- party time :D

This might help to configure port forwarding...

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DI-624/Remote_Desktop.htm

Also please make sure the remote desktop on your windows firewall -> exceptions list are checked on... <-- please ignore this if your windows firewall is off...
