I think you're looking for something similar.
I try to translate to English the description:
"This program is not an original compass. This program has the ability to calculate the angle between the northern direction and the direction of the sun (or the moon) by the knowledge of the actual place and time. This angle showed on the display by an orange (the Sun) and a blue (the Moon) arrow. You have to rotate one of the arrows towards the right direction (the orange towards the Sun or the blue towards the Moon), and the compass will show the right directions...."

GPS-based compasses compare two positions to know your direction, while a real compass is a magnet that interacts with the earth's magnetic field to know where you are looking (without moving)

Why would you want that if you don't have a hardware compass built in phone?

If you have a Diamond, Touch Pro, or any other device with a magnetic stylus, simply attach your stylus to a piece of cork, and float it in the nearest body of water. Voila! Compass. :-p

GPSSpot is the app your're looking for.

It is a digital compass which uses your phones built-in GPS receiver.

I use it, it works really well, and it also allows you to save waypoints.

spikegotti: I think google maps points to the north when started and when you move, it calculates your direction from your previous position ;)

You could always try a cork, magnetized pin and a glass of water! LOL

Unless there is a compass built into the phone there is no way to do it other than GPS and walk in a direction to get a reading. And no that won't work indoors...Unless of course there are very big windows in the room...

You know they sell small stick on compass' you could stick to the back cover of the phone if you really wanted one!

The Touch 3G doesn't have a HARDWARE compass, this app will do nothing useful on your phone.

If anyone managed to extract the Compass pls let me know.

You don't seem to understand the difference between hardware and software. E.g. a camera (lens, sensor, etc.) is hardware, a camera application is software that is uses the camera hardware to take pictures and video. If you have a phone without a camera, what use is the camera software to you? Even if you could run the software, you still can't take any pictures.
The same applies to a digital compass. This application requires that your phone has a magnometer (compass hardware). There are already people who have tried this app on Blackstone etc. but since that phone doesn't have the hardware, the compass needle will always be pointing North. HD2 is the first HTC WinMo phone to have the hardware. You don't have it, hence you have no need for the app (unless you just think it's pretty and you like looking at it).
If you NEED a hardware compass, buy a phone that has it (HD2, Hero, the latest Samsung omnias, eyephone 3GS).

Well Folks! I think the compass feature on the new PDA's function with GPS+Accelerometer+Software. So if we have the software than it should be possible to have the compass feature on HTC Diamond or whatever. Otherwise you have to buy every 2 years a new phone which is ridiculous.

How do tou mean GPS+Accelerometer+Software could act as a compass without moving from point A to point B and from the differences in coordinates estimate in which direction you are moving? and even then its hard to be exact.

What do you mean with bying a new phone, if you want hardware functions that not exists in your old phone of course you have to buy a new one.

hi,
i'm new for this forum
very interesting discussion !!
i'm also wandering for digital compass for wm6 that shows directions just like magnetic compass. i go through this and other related threads.
but at last i found - after all built in hardware is necessary for digital compass and compass -that uses gps- only shows related direction of current location with your previous location. am i right ?

This is a interestering thread. Infact today I was thinking if my mobile (HTC TD2) could tell me which side is the EAST of my new house on a cludy day ;).

So on search I get this thread and found interestering.

On google I got couple of GPS Compass, not sure if any one has tried that and will that help me?
