View Full Version : PocketScreen 1.3 (10-11-2007)
Rhapsody
9th September 2007, 08:54 PM
I was looking for a tool to make screenshots of my phone. But I couldn't find the 'perfect' app for it. So I wrote a tool myself.
It's called PocketScreen. It's been written in VB.NET so you need the .NET Compact Framework for it.
Attached is a screenshot of the application.
You can set a timer from 1 to 60 seconds (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, 30, 45 or 60 seconds)
Further you can decide to exit or focus the application after capture.
The supported filetypes are *.bmp, *.jpg, *.gif or *.png.
When you press the capture button it will automatically minimize the application.
I've tested this on a Wizard only but it should work on any PocketPC with .NETCF 2.0 installed.
Updates
Version 1.3 (10-11-2007)
Some users who tested the application reported an error when opening the directory browser. I cannot reproduce the error but I tried to 'fix' the error.
- Option focus and exit application after capture changed. Now either focus or exit must be selected to prevent the program to stay minimized in memory.
- Directory browser updated. Root is not shown.
- When an error occures while displaying the directory browser a window will be displayed with the error message. (please report)
- Subdirectories will not appear twice (or more) anymore after expanding/collapsing multiple times.
Version 1.2 (07-11-2007, 20:30)
- Settings will be saved on exit. (and will be loaded on startup, of course)
- It's possible to set the number of captures.
Version 1.1 (06-11-2007, 16:00)
- The default save as dialog has been replaced by a new directory browser. Now it's possible to choose a subdirectory to store the captured screenshot.

Appears very nice...this could be the new "screen capture" app everyone includes in their roms instead of Pocket screen Capture which will only save to the temp dir and will only save in .bmp

Rhapsody,
Just figured I'd ask..I'm sure someone will build one if not....do you have an oem package version of the screen capture program for inclusion as a package in a rom? It's basically a zip with the exe and registry entries in a certain format with the executables compressed with upx.
I may try to build one..I'm new to the rom cooking business so usually I just grab ready made packages but if the registry entries are minimal I can probably figure it out.

The application doesn't use any registry at all. So I think the only settings which are stored in the registry are the shortcuts.

Nice App, trying it on my TyTN II. It works, but some things are not functioning.
(I have it installed on my storage card.)
Changing the location for where to save the image is not sticky. Also, cannot specifiy a directory to save to that is within another directory.

What do you mean with 'sticky' ? The app does not remember the location.
The other issue is strange, because I use the default folder browse dialog...

Correct, by Sticky I mean the app does not remember the location.
As for the default folder browser...this is all I get, one directory deep, there is no way to specify a directory within these directories: (see attached image).

I had no problem with the previous version of Printscreen, it must have something to do with the new directory browser you are calling.

Are you sure that it's a problem listing directories on the storage card? I thought pressing the "..." button first lets you select the location (device or storage), if I recall how it worked before. I don't even get that far. it errors immediately on pressing the button.

When you press the "..." button, a new form should open containing all the directories in a treeview.
(See the screenshot at the first post)
What I do is retrieving the directories from the root ("/"). Before adding each directory to the treeview I check whether the directory has subdirectories. If so; I add a plus-symbol in front of the directory. ( Subdirectories are added only when the user expands a 'plus'.)
It seems like the error occurs while getting the subdirectories for the storage card. I've found some similar problems on the internet but I'm unable to reproduce the error. Here everything works fine.
Unfortunately I've not found a solution yet.

When i disable Bluetooth explorer all is OK.
Did little more digging:
On my Storage Card there is a folder \MSMETADATA
If i try to open It with Total Commander i also get an "Error 13 changing to dir!"
looks a lot like the error on the \Bluetooth folder error
This folder (|METADATA) has something to do with Media Player:
[QUOTE:It is your media library index file that is created by Windows Media Player.
Delete the folder and you delete your media library!! :)]
Can this have something to do with the previous error?

[QUOTE:

2) WMDRM (Windows Media Digital Rights Management) = some media licensing data both in Main Memory (may be created in Storage Card; likely ur case), which may be used to check for protected media content.

Now i had no problems and pocketscreen 1.2 loaded without problems
Hope you can fix this

in MS Media Player i updated my library and after that there was the \MSMETADATA folder again.
but now i could open the folder with totalcmd and also pocketscreen worked.
Hard to reproduce:confused:
maybe my library got corrupted somehow, Don't no because i never use media player. Could be that it was there since WM5 when i just got the phone.
Read about the same error 13 by users experiencing corrupted card problems.
Anyway also 1.2 works for me now.

Both captures where succesfull without any errors...
I'm looking at the Bluetooth folder now.
Edit: Ok. I don't have a Bluetooth folder. I'm using Octavoi's ROM. But I understand the reason why it cannot read that particular folder.
The folders mentioned above are still strange. AdeJager1; thanks for testing for now; I'm happy that it works for you now!

I was playing with pocketscreen to capture a bug in PocketCM when i found yet another little thing.
I wanted to take some screen shots on my storage card and wanted to store them in a temp folder. I forgot to make one and had to create it. Because i can't make a new folder in the directory browser of pocketscreen, i switched to total commander and created it. When i switched back to pocketscreen i noticed the directory structure had doubled. i now had two times the directory listing of my storagecard. two temp folders, to program files etc. I could select the temp folder normally and it captured fine. It just looked like the refresh function wasn't working like it should

I noticed this bug yesterday as well. I fixed it directly. So the 'new' version (I did not change the version since I detected it almost directly after uploading the 1.3) will not have this issue.
The only thing is that the directories are cached for performance reasons. So when you create a new directory while the directory browser is open (and the directory where you want to create the new directory is expanded) the new directory will not show up. Closing the form and pressing the '...' button will show the directory.

You can try to make them smaller by using the Windows desktop utility called PNGOUT :)

TinyPic was the service he used, there are more sites which provide the same functionality: uploading pictures/photos.
TinyPic can be found over here: http://tinypic.com/

I like PocketScreen. I use it on my TyTN II and it runs fine.
I also tried spb Screenshot (it's smart to look at the competition). What I liked was the possibility to assign a hardware button.
So when the screenshot application is running, only then the hardware button is linked (to take a screenshot). And when you press the linked hardware button, a screenshot is taken.
Can this be implemented in PocketScreen?
With kind regards,
Patrick

I've been looking at this a while ago but I couldn't find the info (some kind of how to achieve this) needed.
But I'll try to figure it out.

Pocket Screen is the best screen capture software that I ever used in my PPC :)
Hope there will be an upgrade..maybe in speed or in the design :D

good job! even though I get an error (german Rom, WM6 prof): something seems to be missing:
"Datei- oder Assemblyname 'PocketSettings, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' bzw. eine Abhängigkeit davon wurde nicht gefunden"
Anyway I have another sw as workaround. - thx.

Can you check the installation directory if PocketSettings.dll exists?

I had already removed the SW. Just to be able to check it I've installed it again. The answer is yes: there are 4 files:
Settings.xml
PocketSettings.exe
PocketSettings.dll
PocketSettings.ico
Thanks anyway. I know that other people have benefit from this SW. I have to use workaround.

Any way this can "capture" screenshots on long press of Windows Key?
Actually, is there any way I can map it to Topaz Keyboard mapper so that I can assign it to long press of Windows Key and Voila...screenshot of whatever I am looking at...using the default settings. Right now it brings up the settings screen and I have to click "capture" and it does the job.

You need to click on the application icon, choose the number of seconds to wait before the capture(default 3) go to the screen that you want to screenshot within the 3 seconds and wait for the capture to happen.
If you want keys mapped (like mine), you need to use the Topaz keyboard mapper to do that.
