The headset that comes with the hermes is shockingly bad. I had been noticing a steady decline in the volume over the last couple of months and it seemed to be related to the slider. If I moved it periodically there would be a slight improvement.
I finally chucked the thing out and bought this (ORA headset adapter)....

The improvement is dramatic. The sound can now be turned up so loud it hurts my ears. That compared with before, so low I couldn't hear it.
i don't normally like buying from expansys because of the long delays they have. This took three weeks to arrive. It is well worth the $30.
