I tried using a the google mail java app on my tmobile dash. It froze up on me, and when i turned it back on it just stays at the "tmobile" splash screen. I have tried using the soft key and power button reset but it doesnt work. What's weird is that it wont power down unless I take the battery out. It powers on, shows the tmobile splash screen, then freezes. Is there any other way to reset it or is it totally bricked? I bought it new off craiglslist so tmobile wont replace it for me cause I'm using it unlocked on cingular.

The power key reset should work. Could you be doing it wrong?

I was facing the same problem but after doing hard reset (Power Off, Press 2 soft key, Press Power On Key for 2 seconds then release soft key) worked fine. Seems timing is very important, try and try.

I was installing the WM6 Update released on this website, everything was going fine when i saw that my lil' cousin' disconnected my phone while i moved away from the PC (he pulled the phone altogether).

Now my phone is stuck in the bootloader mode screen (tricolor, blue green/red i think). It detects USB (it says USB on the bottom of the screen whenever i connect it). Is there a fix for it for the DASH? I read the wiki about a fix for a similar problem for the Hermes, but that didnt work for mine.

Can anybody help me please?!

Mine's a T-Mobile Dash with the stock rom from T-Mobile.

Just try the flash again and it should start working. I had my computer bluescreen while I was flashing an SDA and got to the tricolor screen. It flashed fine after trying again. If its not detecting right. Pop out the battery on the phone and restart your computer and attempt the flash again. Shouldn't be a problem. Definitely scary though. :) I don't think you can brick these unless you mess up the bootloader perhaps...

Well, tried that, but the computer doesnt detect the phone, meaning it wont connect to ActiveSync. Since it won't connect to activesync the program wont install it on the phone since it can't find it.

Good thing i have insurance. Bad thing i'm trying again as soon as i get the replacement :p

Are there any alternatives though? Maybe i can fix it before i send this one back.

Q: I use RUU to update and failed, and my device always boots in three-color mode and cannot enter CE OS anymore, what should I do now?
A: If the update process has failed, you will see that your device will always boot in three-color mode. It's normal and can be recovered. Please follow the instructions below to reset your device and to establish a connection with the computer.
1. Disconnect your Mobile Device from the USB cradle/cable.
2. Reset your Mobile Device.
3. Reconnect your Mobile Device to the USB cradle/cable.
4. Check that the communication cradle/cable is connected properly.
5. Return to the ROM Update Utility.
Note: You should ignore the ActiveSync connection.

A few days before the official TMobile WM6 update came out I download the widely posted leaked version. The Dash started acting up during bootup one day, so I reflashed with the TMobile WM6. Now the same thing just started, and the device can't be used.

When powered on it does the quick vibrate, TMobile screen, Windows Mobile Screen, TMobile screen again, with power up 'jingle', then it just shuts off and starts the bootup sequence again. Endlessly.

Have tried removing the battery, etc. Has anyone else run into this? Any ideas of a keypress combo or something I can press during bootup that might jump-start it??? Thanks!

Take out the microSD card and the unit should boot properly. Mine was fixed with a new SIM card, but a new device may also be needed.

Wound up doing a hard reset. I had tried taking out the microSD card, then it would just hang on the TMobile screen. I also tried rebooting without the SIM card in, then it would do the loop thing. I'm thinking it must be related to software loading during the boot, and the only program I have on the microSD card that loads during bootup is FizzWeather.

I think this may at times be related to an auto-install file being present.
If you hold down the "end" key during boot-up it seems to prevent the cycling.

Thanks, will keep that in mind if it happens again. By 'end' key, do you mean the red phone icon key that you hang up on a call with?

Yes, I hold down the red phone key (end key) to stop the boot cycling. I look forward to someone finding the cause of this behavior.

Had the same problem on my T-Mobile Dash which I had upgraded from WM5 to the official WM6 ROM. Neither of the suggestions above would work. Just a never ending boot, reboot. Did a hard reset but did not load any programs. I had noticed the Newsbreak would load during startup (same with WM5) and it would sometimes hang when reading my RSS feeds. I think the post above about a auto install program is the problem (program on SD).

My phone did this when I let the battery go dead (remember, the Dash with WM6 drains battery pretty bad compared to WM5).

I plugged it in and let it charge all the way up. When I turned it on, it was stioll doing it.

Here's what I did to fix it:

Take out the microSD card.

Take out the SIM.

Pull out the battery for 5 mins.

When I turned it on, it complained about not having a SIM card. I clicked through the errors and it took me into Windows. I then shut it down properly and put the rest of the stuff back in. Worked fine after that.

Does that setting refer to Bluetooth? How does it save power if Bluetooth is shut off... and... if Bluetooth is on, and the setting is unchecked, does Bluetooth use less power? Thanks!

has nothing to do with bluetooth.

i think it has to do with infrared communication.

chaznet

That doesn't sound correct... The Dash doesn't have infrared, though it does have the function of 'beaming' contacts via bluetooth (as well as receiving 'beamed' contacts via bluetooth).

Guys look in the \Windows\StartUp\ folder and see if you can find a file call the \SDdaemon\ file. I believe this file is not suppose to be in the Dash period, now I could be wrong, but when I deleted this file, the [SDdaemon file] and deleted Newsbreake, the cycle of rebooting stop immediately. Somebody gave me a home screen to download, thats when the cycle of rebooting started on my Dash! Let me know what you find on your Dash, because I can tell you more by the results you find! P.S I found out its not the [Sddaemon file], it was Newsbreake!

You can hard re-set it.

Take out the battery and leave it out for about 1 minute. Put it back in. Before turning your phone on push down on both soft keys and hold them. At the same time press the on off button for 2 seconds then let go. When the writing comes up just press the send key.

...I don't use NewsBreak, so that doesn't apply, thanks though -- glad you found a solution for your issue.

It's not related to the SD card either. After the hard reset I took the SD card out and reinstalled everything to main memory, after some use, it started happening again. First time was when I was working on a Facade-based homescreen and was doing a bunch of screen refreshes. Don't know that it's at all related to Facade, that's just when it started. Has been happening at random ever since.

Luckily, as someone previously posted, holding the END key jump starts things and the device boots -- usually after a couple trys. What an annoying bug, glad there's a workaround...

jt76542
27th May 2007, 10:20 AM
Agreed. The re-boot cycle WAS the most annoying of the little quirks. I switched back to WM5 yesterday afternoon. The end key and or the soft keys didn't work for me. Neither did loading with or without the sim card or storage card. I reinstalled the ROM several times also with no luck.

I'll upgrade after someone cooks a better ROM or T Mobile / HTC sends out a patch for the majority of the issues.

I had posted the suggestion of holding down the end key to stop the cycling but that stopped working for me. I find myself wondering if any of us have found the true cause of this problem since it can be very intermittant.

I just replaced my SIM card yesterday. I am wondering if my chip was damaged and caused this intermittant cycling. My phone would boot fine without the SIM in the phone but would start cycling again as soon as I booted with the SIM in place. I had also noted that there were times when I had no signal but should have had. It was then after rebooting when the cycling would begin. Putting my SIM in another phone also failed to find a GSM signal.

I won't know for many days if replacing the SIM chip solved this problem for me because of the intermittant/recurring nature of the problem.

I had the same problem. That being said I take it your in the re-boot loop. I wiped the storage card of all programs. Took it out and did a hard reset. Then after it went through the cold boot up I inserted the SD card. I installed all of the programs I use on the dashs memory, not the SD and haven't had any re-boot loops since.:)

Out of curiosity how many of us are using the leaked WM6 t-mobile Rom? I was using the leaked one and then used the official one from the t-mobile site and so far so good it seemed to have fixed it. I know that they look the same but what if something was changed without changing the ROM number?

This is a WM6 problem, not a Dash problem. How do I ascertain this? The exact same thing happens on my Vox. The ritual I must go through with my Vox is absolutely ridiculous.

Before turning off the unit, I place it in flight mode. I then turn on the unit immediately. If I charge it, or leave it off for awhile, it goes through the loop nonsense.

I use SafeMode (a retail application), which does prevent it if I put it into safe mode on startup. My belief is that the "home.exe" causes the issue, but I have no way of validating this.

T-mobile Tech support says that it is a problem with the ROM and they are working with Microsoft to fix it, they offered to replace my dash with one that has WM5 on it. Personally I think the issue is in the radio portion of the rom. If mine starts to boot loop I put the phone into flight mode, power off and back on, re-enable the radio and the loop goes away for a few days. If I write anything to the sim card the boot loop returns.

just an FYI , mine just started doing this boot-loop thing. I uninstalled FizzWeather, and it said "some files could not be deleted, they will be removed when you reboot your phone" and i clicked "ok" and the phone rebooted, and hasn't fully booted since.

UPDATE: End key and soft-key boots didn't help me at all. . . took out battery, sim, and SD. put battery back in and it booted (with the obvious error), i shutdown correctly, put sim and SD back in, and voila now its working again. hopefully this will somehow help someone else.

I got a new TMobile Dash and upgraded directly to MS 6.0. Therefore I can't say that the problem did or did not exist prior to MS6.0.

However, I seem to encounter the same problem.
After inserting my brand new 2GB SanDisk MicroSD card the phone keeps
restarting.
I can insert the card while the phone is running successfully! But after the next power cycle I'm in the restart loop.

I got a response from the email TMobile support suggesting 2GB cards don't work.

.., please note that currently, the T-Mobile DASH reliably supports memory
cards with up to 1GB storage capacity. Issues such as long loading time and
device rebooting may occur if larger memory cards are used. I understand
this is not exactly the information you wanted to hear, and I apologize for
any inconvenience this may have caused and I thank you for your patience and
understanding.

Does this make sense?

I did a hard reset, reinstalled >all< software to main memory and only use the storage card for multimedia files. Thought this would clear things up, but, it didn't -- the rebooting loop issue continued. Fortunately for me, holding the 'END' key when this happens gets me out of it -- but this doesn't work for everyone.

It would appear that while many of us are experiencing this issue, there seem to be a bunch of different variations of the bug. One thing is for sure, it's damn annoying...

Put the phone into flight mode (turn off phone radio) before you reboot and it will start back up fine, then re-enable the radio. Obviously this won't help if the phone freezes and you have to pop the battery, but for a regular reboot it will work fine.

I noticed that the notifications queue has duplicates in it after every reboot. this grows and grows after each boot. it can be taken care of by clearing the duplicates after every boot, but this is a workaround, not a fix.

Anyways, one of the dupes starts with WLM, which is windows live mesenger. I then deleted the WLM service from the registry, rebooted, and it didnt create the dupes. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Before you go deleting the key, make sure to back it up first. The key is:
HKLM\Services\Windows Live

If this works for you, please reply. If it doesnt, also reply.

I ended up getting a replacement device from T-Mobile since I actually had to remove the SIM card in order to get mine to boot without going into a reboot loop. The replacement device had WM6 preinstalled and has no reboot issue, although it is a refurbished unit with build quality issues (argh!) so getting a replacement for that, too.

I apologize in advance for the length of this post.

I usually pride myself on being able to research a new toy before I buy it. Somehow my new Dash has managed to destroy my pride. I read lots of user reviews from all over the internet about the Dash before buying a pair for myself and wife. Overall, I found glowing reviews, and of course as always there were some naysayers, but the ratio of good:bad was something like 9:1 so i figured it was a good bet. I feel like I lost on this one.

I have the Dash which came with WM6. Most of the features on this phone are very nice, but the ones that have me scratching my head are:

- It freezes... to the point where I need to take the battery out to get the system back up again. At first I thought it was my fault because I added too many email accounts: outlook/exchange, gmail, windows live, yahoo and aol. I removed yahoo and aol but I would still have freezing while viewing email. Based on all of those glowing reviews I expected the phone + OS to be able to handle at least those 3 accounts without problems.

Email was the feature I spent most of my time playing with initially, so the freezing would occur while I was viewing the inbox and also while viewing individual messages (plain-text without attachents). When I started spending less time on email, then I realized that the freezing is also happening everywhere else!! It's usually after I've done a good amount of surfing around the interface. Seems like this WM6 OS is buggy. After a certain amount of loading and unloading different screens within the OS, it just locks up.

My wife's Dash has not had this problem, but I suspect it's because she doesn't spend much time surfing around the interface. She only has a very light volume of phone calls, and other than that she leaves windows media player running with her playlist while she plays the included bubble game.

- Slow... 1-2 second delay between any screen change (home screen to start menu, settings menu, etc etc)

- Memory usage... I'm assuming that WM6 is optimized to make good use of available memory, but usually task manager shows between 1MB and 6MB free, with NOTHING RUNNING... I really don't know whether I should even care, but it seems a little bit fishy.

So far I have installed only one third party app: google maps; and i have setup those email accounts listed above, which of course means that I have some mail messages now in the phone along with contacts. Wouldn't this phone be able to handle this much without turning into a sloth? Am i expecting too much?

I thought I should look for some updates, and the t-mobile site currently offers me a "T-Mobile Dash Software (Version 1.22.531.4)" - BUT the ROM version already installed on my phone is 1.22.531.6

Now I realize that the users who were giving very good reviews were the ones who had WM5; apparently this phone ran very nicely with that version.

I need some suggestions:

Should I downgrade my firmware to the earlier revision officially offered by t-mobile?

OR

Is it possible for me to downgrade my Dash to WM5?

OR

Should I wait until t-mobile and/or microsoft offer an update (this might never happen)?

OR

Should I dump this otherwise attractive phone for something else?

OR

Should I just live with it?

OR

Should I never post on this forum again?

Thanks for taking the time!!!!

well, just about everything you ask has been asked here already so have a look around and see what you can find.

The tmo wm6 is a pretty bad rom although with a few tweaks you can get it running fairly well. the main thing you are having problems with is available memory. you need to close out of programs after using them. open the task manager and close running apps a couple of times a day or anytime you have gone and opened a bunch of programs.

wm5 is available here but i would recommend switching to the new htc wm6 when it comes out.

good luck.

thanks for the reply!

Maybe i didnt make it very clear... I do keep a constant eye on the task manager, and the freezing occurs when there is only a single app running, or no apps running (just navigating through the WM6 menus). I never leave a bunch of apps running. as soon as i am done, I go to task manager and close whatever i was in.

as far as the tweaks, i am more than willing to experiment with general WM6 tweaks, but i was hoping that someone could provide some advice specific to this HTC phone, maybe someone who has experienced the same problems.

If i switch to the HTC WM6, will i need to notify t-mobile? or will it just work with my subscribed phone and data services? any other potential pitfalls/caveats when switching from t-mobile dash rom to htc rom?

lafester

sorry i missed that part.

tmo wm6 is bloated with the myfaves software and voice command. if you don't use voice command constantly it is best to shut it down through the vc menu.

the myfaves starts and runs automatically in the windows start menu so you have to remove it from there. search for the specific instructions on how to remove.

you might find that rebooting the phone periodically will help clear up some memory as well.

the htc rom will work fine with tmobile. you do have to follow the instructions here (look at the tmobile dash to htc thread. its for wm5 but the steps are the same).

thanks, chris

I thought I should look for some updates, and the t-mobile site currently offers me a "T-Mobile Dash Software (Version 1.22.531.4)" - BUT the ROM version already installed on my phone is 1.22.531.6

Hmmm....

Mine reads "Version 1.22.531.4" too ...

when T-Mobile had the ROM for upgraded awhile ago ... we all downloaded this version ... I wondered what they did differently to reflect the end number to jumped 2 notch ???

Unicornkaz, since you are currently running the version offered on the website, please let me know whether you are experiencing any problems with your Dash... I am very curious. If yours seems to be more stable than mine, then I will attempt to replace my current ROM with the version offered online.

I did see that the HTC WM6 ROM has apparently been released, but in Russian as the main language, but does include english. I would prefer to wait until the 'English as primary language' ROM is released.

Also, FYI to anyone watching this thread, this morning I woke up and went to shower, when I came back, my Dash was locked up again, however this time it was locked on an incoming call, with the vibration motor spinning at full speed, non-stop. The phone was plugged into the wall charger, there were absolutely no apps running, except for the incoming call (I had made sure task manager was clear before plugging the phone in to charge overnight).

I don't know about anyone else, but this seems like a bad problem to me. If anyone else has experienced the same, then I'm curious to learn whether or not they found a software solution. If I don't find any more stories like mine, then I will assume that I was just lucky and got some faulty hardware.

UnicornKaz

I didn't like the T-Mobile WM6 official at all ... currently I'm running official WM5 from HTC ;)

there were many bugs ... & memory leak that T-Mobile didn't take care before releasing ...I didn't have it on long enough ( don't have the time & patience to play with it ) ... but the thing that made me went back to the stable HTC WM5 was the "voicetags" feature that I could not do without.

hang on a little longer ... rumour has it that the official WM6 from HTC is just around the corner ;)

Thanx again Unicornkaz, you've given me some hope for this hardware! I'm convinced that this current t-mobile WM6 ROM (1.22.531.6) is most likely the root of my troubles.

If i decide to load WM5 onto this phone rather than wait for the HTC WM6, which specific WM5 ROM should i go with? I'm most concerned with stability. Imagine finding your phone laying there vibrating nonstop... now i wonder whether my wife has the same problem, but never bothered to tell me because its not a 'problem' for her.

My brand new unlocked Dash running on cingular has started doing something strange as of late.

It oculd be totally unrelated, but it started happning the day after i configured windows live to push hotmail and played around with a trial IMAP email account. I am also installing diff. apps on it and playing around a lot so anything could have caused it.

When I soft-reset my Dash, it starts up again, I see the TMobile screen, the WinMobile6 screen and then it reboots again and again and goes into an infinite reboot loop.

I took out the battery and removed the MicroSD and the SIM and then when i reboot it, it starts normally complains about the SIM and when I insert the SIM and microsd, everything is ok.

This morning when i woke up, my Dash didn't. I noticed that somehow it had turned itself off during the night (the charge when i slept last night was 80% +). When i tried to start it, it went into the same infinite restart loop until i did the SIM trick.

What could be causing this?

i noticed it started after i installed facade. and had a micro sd.

to get it to boot again, just pop the sd out. shouldnt have to take the sim out. at least i didnt.

even after i uninstalled facade, it still does it. quite annoying.

Please check your Start up items at /Windows/StartUp folder, Back it up on a temp folder and delete them all except for WifiInit which it loads the Wifi driver. Now try to reboot..see if it fixes the problem. Now isolate, one by one copy back the LNK files to the Startup folder and reboot everytime you do, see what program causes the infinite reboot problem..

I actually did that and posted my results in Howard Forums. I thought it was software related but after installing the same software onto my device a second time (1 by 1 and rebooting) the issue didn't happen when the same software was installed. I emailed the software makers and let them know iof a possible issue but had to email them back when the software installed good the second time around.

My Dash had been running good for a few weeks and I had to soft reset one day and the issue started up again out of the blue.

It was working fine, and then I switched to another phone for a day, and then when I switched back and it won't boot up.

When I try to turn it on it gets to the Windows Mobile startup screen and then just stays on it.

The green status LED does flash.

When I get a incoming call I Do get the incoming call screen and I Am able to answer it, but it then the screen says on the incoming call screen forever.

So basically, my Excalibur is still working but only for incoming calls.

What can I do?

I tried a Hard Reset (turn phone off, hold both soft keys, hold power button for 2 seconds, release power button, release both soft keys) and it does absolutely nothing.

What can I do? Any ideas?

To hard reset you have to:

1º turn off your dash

2º press the two soft keys and hold

3º press at the same time just for a second or less the power button. /Just a single click)

the reset screen will appear, release all the buttons, and press the call button, it will be reset.

It sounds to me you guys should re-install WM5/WM6 rom. It could be a faulty install as I have also experienced this before. I use to get stuck at the T-Mobile Screen and will still get flashing green light like suppose to mean my dash is receiving cellular signal. One way without the uninstall that worked for me since I used a MicroSD card was to remove it then plug it back in. This was because I had programs installed in the memory card that ran at Startup. If your phone turns on and even answer calls, it sounds more like a software issue than a hardware one. If your phone didn't turn on at all, then it would of been a hardware issue.

I just took out my memory card again and my Excalibur completely froze so I reset it and it locked on the startup screen again, so (for me) the issue is just that I have apps that are trying to run at startup on my memory card. Did you remove your card?

oxios is great for clearing out memory. all i can say about live mail is that it works most of the time but does disconnect on occasion. i have never tried to sync that many folders but i do sync a few with no problems.

when mail dissapears from your phone its only because it lost sync. the phone won't save the emails if it tries to sync and nothing is there. i would guess you are simply trying to do too much with live mail. cut back on the number of folders and you should be fine.

i would also suggest trying the htc rom now that there is a free cid bypass available. that tmo wm6 is bad.

good luck!

I haven't installed anything new on it for 2 months, so why suddenly would I have memory issues?

Also, the way T-mobile handles the replacement process, It cant be stopped, I received the replacment phone, paid for the shipping and have to send in the original phone.

Maybe the answer to your problem is in that thread, but I can tell what happened to me a couple of days ago.

I installed TomTom (I'm pretty sure it can happen with any other program which has a homescreen plugin or that loads on boot) on my SD card and after that the Excalibur would reboot in an endless loop.

I took out the microsd and it booted, so I renamed the Program Files directory and put the microsd back in and it did work.

thanksYes, you can recover your device, don't panic! First separate your device from the Active Sync USB cable, remove the battery, sim card and the SD card. Let the device stay off for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes put the sim card, SD Card and battery back into your device, power on your phone things should be back to normal now.

Alright, take the SD Card out of the device and power cycle the phone but keep the SD Card out of the phone for a while, try that.....!

How do I power cycle the phone???, BTW, there's no SD card or SIM on the phone.... the weird thing is that whenever I connect it the battery does not show the orange charging light or the green fully charged light... so I can't connect it via USB, is there any combination that I can do a hard reset or start it up in the white screen boot mode??

ok here it goes...

was trying to do an update on a dash to win mobile 6.0.. this phone has been know to have problems with the battery and shutting down unexpectedly...

during the upgrade the phone shutdown...

now it only powers up on the boot screen (the three color screen)
sometimes it does not power up.. and only a black screen remains...

I have tried to do a hard reset, won't work

I have sometimes suceed in connecting the phone to windows in usb mode, but it won't recognize the phone (unrecognized device appears on control panel, device manager)

so I can-t upgrade, downgrade or do anything... the phone wont even turn on sometimes... any ideas???

Hi guys,

I bought a brand new T-mobile Dash in the US (unlocked), brought it back to Israel and installed a new rom with WM6. I then downloaded the trial version from eyron's website and tried to install it but with no luck. Registration can't be completed and then the OS gets stuck upon boot (need hard reset).
My question is if anyone's ever succeeded to run eyron on this device? and if anybody knows if and where I could get a trial version for PDAC ?

Thanks in advance!

PDAC works on HTC S620.
they do not give out trials. you can go to their office for a trial installation.

Did you try and do a ROM flash? What have you done or what has happend that might have made this happen?

Perhaps you should try and flash your ROM again and see if that helps.

The phone functions, the only issue is when i boot theres a white screen. windows starts and incoming/outgoing calls work. If the phone goes into screen saver mode, when i press any key, the os appears for a second then the white screen returns. I done several hard resets. please help!!!!!!

I had a similar problem after playing with the registry settings for a device's power states (I was trying to see if I could turn off the backlight). I would check there, although these should be fixed after a hard reset. Does changing the display's time out value help the problem?

The only thing that consistently works for me is to turn off the cell phone radio and then power down the unit. Once the unit reboots (always on the first try yielding the "beep") turn the cell phone radio back on.

Hope it works for you too.

What I have found is if the internal "Storage" memory gets less then 20MB, my DASH will go into a reset loop the next time I reboot it.

The "Storage" memory is the memory used by files and other data in the internal part of the memory. This is not the "Programs" memory that "running" apps use.

The storage memory gets eaten up the more apps you install into the "Device" memory (even if you select "Sotrage Card", some apps will install part or all of themselfs in device memory - google maps is a perfect example)

You just need to make sure that the internal "storage" memory does not go less then 20MB free.

^either do that or flash to the HTC ROM.

i flashed my dash to the htc rom and have not had a single reboot loop.
my reboot was caused by the sd card when i had the dash rom.

that alone made the change worth it.

Aight it seems it might be the memory i installed that piece of ish HTC homescreen plugin and it slowed down my phone so i deleted it and it made me soft reset which started that loop reset BUT i pulled my 2 gig out and all is well thank god i installed that to my card and not the phone that might be the prob with yall who take out the sim and storage card i hope not good luck im gonna stick with my stock dash for now.

Well im running the newest posted firmware and i installed palringo yesterday, i woke up this morning and my phone was locked up so i cycled it and it keeps booting to a locked up home screen with no response from button presses. Is there like a soft reset i can do at boot or some safe mode type boot i can use to move this along?

I really need my phone today and i cant seem to get it to work

If you make sync on this situation and think pelringo is the problem, you may simply rename perlingo program dir, to make pelringo auto start impossible end all pelringo shortcuts invalid.

After many enjoyable evenings upgrading my Excalibur to a new ROM, I bricked it last night trying to install the 6.1 ROM. Is there anything I can try to resuscitate the phone or should I stop looking for a cure?

What's happen exactly?

robertgbl
7th March 2008, 05:15 PM
while attempting for the 3rd time to update my ROM to 6.1 the phone stopped responding.
* I cannot turn the phone on
* cannot reset holding down both softkeys while pressing the power button briefly
* cannot get a light on the phone to indicate charging

i.e. - the phone responds to nothing. I have left the battery out for hours, tried charging (the battery is full), removed the SIM, etc. Nothing

This, it would seem, is the definition of a bricked phone?

(thanks for any help out there. I'm bidding on an iphone assuming I need to replace my excalibur.)

Dude - may be this advice is stupid but:
I had the same problem temporally.
I remove the battery and wait some time (10 sec or something)

After that I press the power button for very long time - 10 seconds.
I have the feeling this rom starts after long pressing the power button.
Try to press hard (to be sure you make connection with button) 10 seconds.
Maybe your phone will start.

Ok bro I know I am a bit too late to help you with this problem but someone else may benefit from these directions. I see most places online only have half advice about this very common problem with T-mobile Dash.

This is what you need to do, you have to do a hard reset exactly like "reviel" mention. Also like he said timing is essential but the trick is that you need to show some patience through the process.

Note: Please read the directions completely before doing anything for better results.

Step 1: Take your battery out and shut off your phone
Step 2: Press and hold the two soft key buttons.
Step 3: Press and hold the power button for exact two seconds, 1001, 1002 and release, but continue to hold the two soft key buttons.
Step 4: Within seconds a black screen with some text will come up asking you to confirm if you wanna delete everything; and right then you let go of your soft key buttons and press the green call button (also known as the "send key").
Step 5: You are done but not really, your job now is to find something else to do and leave your phone alone for at least 2 minutes. Eventually if you don't have a SIM in it, it will prompt you for it and you click the soft key to choose "OK"; also, it will ask you to confirm to restart and you click the soft key to chose "Done" for it.

Wait a minute for it boot up and overall it should do it.

u have to find a rom which matches your CID and ModelID
Eg. u have to use T-mobile rom to flash your T-mobile Excalibur, HTC for HTC....etc

if none of the rom matches your ID, i think u have to send it back to service center.

:( I have successfully flashed my rom several times. Sadly today, I was kind of depressed so I decided to do what I like doing best, flashing roms...

Unfortunately, I might have skipped some steps.

I was reading the new rom for T-mobile Dash aka Excalibur. In the description, I didn't have to do anything. I downloaded RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_080313_WWE and started the process without using Surreal Networks, SDA, etc.

I got to the point of having the white screen which is a good sign supposedly with excalibur. It reach 6% then BOOM -the screen turn black.

I tried removing the battery and reinstall but didn't do anything. Tried pressing the 2 softkeys and the power button for some seconds still didn't do anything. I connected to the charger but the light indicator that shows the phone is plugged doesnot even light. tried flashing the original rom but received an error "260", "240"or "270". I'm so down that I couldn't even remember the error number. I tried flashing again but I get a message that there is no devicce connected to the compute. On my computer, the phone doesn't show that it is connected any more.

**Must have phone plugged into pc via usb
To place the unit in bootloader mode, perform a soft reset (for instance take the battery out), when the screen goes blank hold the camera button until a multi colored screen comes up [...]

When the unit is connected, USB is displayed at the bottom left.

Once in bootloader mode you can connect the unit via USB to your PC, run CID-Unlock (if not included in the ROM upgrade package) and run the upgrade again. http://www.htcwizardweb.net/node/743 -- Better detail on this website

So if I read this correctly, your device will not even show a charging light when plugged in? Is this even when plugged into the wall power charger? Have you tired plugging it into the wall power charger without the battery installed?

If you get no light even when the battery is removed from the wall charger, your phone really might be dead.

Have you tried leaving the battery out of the phone for a while? Do you know someone with another Excalibur who you could test your battery with and vice versa?

You cannot flash the phone until it is either running the OS and connected to PC through Activesync, or in Bootloader Mode.

Bootloader Mode for the Excalibur, if you can get some power into it and boot it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-327779.html

1 - Phone should be completely off and unplugged from USB.

2 - Hold down the SYM(camera) key and keep holding

3 - Plug in USB

4 - your phone should now be in bootloader mode!

Failing all that, you could always try taking it into your carrier and see if they can magic it back into life.

Good luck!

Oh, and if you have a storage card, remove it

I have received the one from Proph3t today (its my third, got it for parts) and it is the same as the OP's problem..no lights..nothing. Tried with and without battery (known good) and various methods of the symbol key and soft key presses. No life whatsoever.

Certainly sounds a little terminal doesn't it.

The FAQ's on HTC e-club suggest that leaving the battery out of the phone for more than 30 minutes can cause the phone to hard reset which may be useful. But if there are no lights, no response from the device then that is of no use.

I don't understand how the application of software can cause hardware to fail. And whilst installing a ROM on a phone is like a brain transplant, it seems unlikely that it could cause the physical hardware to stop working?

I'm not techie enough, can anyone explain?

gospeed.racergo

Permanently bricking the device is always a possibility whenever flashing a ROM that includes the bootloader (IPL/SPL). If during an update of either the IPL or SPL fails, the bootloader becomes corrupted and won't boot the device. Since the SPL itself is responsible for the ability to flash the device at all, there is no way to recover from a corrupted bootloader short of dismantling the device and flashing it via external means such as JTAG.

The bootloader on a WinCE device is equivalent to the BIOS on a PC.

It's taking too long "verifying information on your smartphone" is that normal?

Anyway, I remember I ran this once before and afterwards I got a "file is corrupted" message afterwards, I guess I just didn't know it was cracked! hehehe...

No, you can't CIDUnlock in bootloader mode.
If you brick your phone and bootloader still works, you HAVE to flash the stock ROM.

velascoperroni

Ok, I force the bootloader mode, run the cracked software and after the "file was corrupted message" it restarts the phone... but the phone doesn't restart in bootloader mode, it restarts in the HTC startup logo and it stays that way (I'm forced to pull out the battery to shut down)

So I cannot run other roms since I have to reset the phone.

Isn't there a way to do it with the SD card?

At this point, that's my only hope!!!

1. Given that the phone is CID Locked, I can only flash the original ROM: RUU Movistar/Telefonica Spanish WM5 (or something in these parameters), and

2. I can't use the CID Bypass since such requires me to make an activesync connection (something bootloader mode can't do).

The problem is that I don't have said ROM (and I cannot find anything on google that even resembles it)

What can I do?

1. Is there a CID unlock than can be done via the micro SD card?
2. May Hard SPL work?
3. Does anyone in this forum have the ROM I need?
4. Is there a ROM I could use that doesn't check for vendor ID?
5. If I get a hold of another Movistar Spanish WM5 Excalibur, can I backup the ROM?
6. What company may be the equivalent for Movistar/Telefonica in the U.S. or Europe? If I know this would it's original ROM work? (i.e. If Movistar/Telefonica where owned by T-Mobile, would the T-Mobile original ROM work? (I've tried the T-Mobile one though and it doesn't work)

The phone is just 3 days new, I don't wanna take it back yet, I don't like giving up and this great community has helped me a lot... all suggestions are more than welcome!!!

P.S. I must add that USPL-RUU doesn't work because I corrupted the original image, the WM5 to WM6 upgrading process quit at 16%, deleting (I suposse) quite a bit of the original WM5. In fact, I get this version in the bootloader screen: 1.27.0000

ashasaur

mkay, that version number is the base line WM6 version number, SO what has happened is the WM6 bootloader was installed, but nothing else, THAT is why It wont go any farther than the HTC logo screen...have you tried one of the new WM6.1 RUU's to see what one of those does?

velascoperroni

I have tried many, many WM6... none work since phone is Cid Locked... I get the classic "vendor id..." message... I'll give a try to a WM6.1 RUU, but if it stayed CID Locked, won't I get the same message?

Ok... I don't think it'll work... I only find Kavana's RUU and such uprade needs an activesync connection.

Can anyone please, please answer this questions:

1. Is there a CID unlock than can be done via the micro SD card?
2. May Hard SPL work?
3. Does anyone in this forum have the ROM I need?
4. Is there a ROM I could use that doesn't check for vendor ID?

well I think(and this is a shot in the dark) that Kavanas WM6.1 rom doesnt require activesync seeing as it disables it as soon as you start the RUU...so I would try that first, seeing as it automatically CID unlocks your phone for you through an installation wizard, also, check your PMs.

Usually you can flash with SD card, but there might be CID checking there too. Doesn't hurt to try, I suppose!

You will need a FAT32 formatted SD card (by default they are usually FAT so you might have to reformat on your PC). Then copy the nbh file to it. Just a guess, but I think it will need to be named EXCAIMG.nbh. Put it in the phone and go into bootloader and see if it finds the file.

Flashing with the stock ROM will be almost impossible since I did not backed it up (dumb newbie!) and my original WM5 ROM is from telefonica/movistar in Mexico, I don't think there's gonna be any RUUs of those around!!!

Stock ROM refers to a carrier provided 'official' ROM as opposed to a cooked ROM from xda-developers.

If you search the forums you will find links to the 'orginal' HTC ROMs, if you can get to the Bootloader screen, these ROM's will flash to you phone.

My phone doesn't react to any connection whether it may be connected to a charger or usb connected to my notebook via windows mobile device center..

Any other suggestions boys???

**Must have phone plugged into pc via usb
To place the unit in bootloader mode, perform a soft reset (for instance take the battery out), when the screen goes blank hold the camera button until a multi colored screen comes up [...]

When the unit is connected, USB is displayed at the bottom left.

Once in bootloader mode you can connect the unit via USB to your PC, run CID-Unlock (if not included in the ROM upgrade package) and run the upgrade again. http://www.htcwizardweb.net/node/743 -- Better detail on this website

After half an hour, I'll try all the suggested stuff.

Thank you all for the great support. Sent in more suggestion please. A MILLION THANKS TO YOU ALL...:o

Good luck!

Sorry, I have an HTC device so I always assume everyone else does to :)

What I mean is, you need to get a ROM from where you originally purchased the phone. So if you have an HTC s620/s621, you need an original HTC ROM that matches the CID (CID = Carrier ID) so that when the ROM is matched against the CID it is allowed to install.

If you have a T-Mobile DASH, you need a T-Mobile ROM, if a Dopod device, then a Dopod ROM.

Make sense?

This is one of the reasons that I always pay the small amount of money to have the CID lock removed from my devices as soon as I buy them. I use imei-check.com for personal choice, your CID unlocker of choice may vary :)

the USPL and such utilities bypass these checks, but they rely on a usable device. in the case of a bootloader ROM replace, these utilities do not have a chance to be used

As I've repeatedly said: my carrier is Movistar, from Mexico... I can bet you there's not a copy of a ROM from Movistar for the HTC Excalibur on the internet and I don't have it!

Although... I saw an equivalence list somewhere for smartphones that told which carriers where alike, so, for example if movistar and at&t where alike, I could use the at&t ROM for my movistar phone without CID Unlock. Unfortunately, in said list the only HTC phone missing was the excalibur!

So, if you know which popular carrier may be equivalent to movistar, that would help!

Also, I'm having a pretty hard time trying to find 1.15 ROMS for the Excalibur (WM5), can someone post download links?

Lastly, I saw a thread by a fellow with the same problem than I (stuck in the splash screen, forced to pull battery to turn off) and fixed it by cold booting? what is that? I supposse is diferent from a hard reset which I already did and didn't work.

And the right procedure is:

1. Phone Off;
2. Press left and right soft keys;
3. Keep pressed left and right soft keys and press power button for 1 second;
4. Release power button and keep pressed left and right soft keys;
5. After 3-5 secs (with left and right soft keys still pressed) confirmation screen will apear;
6. Press send.

I already tried it and did not solve my problem like for the friend on the aforeposted thread...

I followed the method Kavana posted and didn't work, all I'm able to do is a hard reset.

Hello:

I have had the dash for about 6 hours now... (a replacement to my recently departed Wing... LCD destroyed) and am having massive problems.

I was exploring the files in the onboard storage... and backing up my pim. I safely removed the device from my vista laptop, did a soft reboot and now I am stuck in this loop.

I have tried many aforementioned remedies:

1. hard master reboot
2. removing SD card
3. Removing SIM and SD card...

Nothing seems to work... and I am wildly frustrated...

Any thoughts...

Also... would it be possible to copy the PIM from my Wing and replace the PIM on my Dash with it?

In 3-color screen after connecting PC by press and holding SYM key, the information is as following:
Excalibur Wifi
ONBL 1.33.0000

SPL 1.33.0000
Excalibur IU

I have the problem that my TMobile Dash is brick, here is what I did:

I bought a TMobile Dash and it came with WM5, I decided to install a new ROM I chose Kavanas:

--- RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_080318_WWE

So I installed everything, it was ok, I even played with it for a little while, accessed the internet, played some games...everything was fine but I had not insterted any SIM Card, and when I did and restarted the device, WM6 would not start, it froze at the Windows Mobile startup screen.

So I decided to install the ROM again through the bootloader screen.

To access the bootloader I did the following:

I pressed the SYM button and then connected the device to the USB cable which lead me to the bootloader screen.

Now here is the problem, I am on the bootloader screen but I cant install anything. My computer seems to detect that I connect a device but if I disconnect it, the bootloader screen says it is still connected (the USB white bar below is still there). I have ActiveSync in my computer and it says "The Device is not a Smartphone" when I disconnect it.

I had done this before with another TMobile Dash phone, and back then my computer did detect a Smartphone device, and I could install the ROM.

There is one just difference back then from before, last time I did not access the bootloader by myself, it appeared by itself when I restarted the device.

Am I doing something wrong?

DO you guys have any tips?

Is there any other way to access the bootloader?

Please help!!! :)

Profezza

Are you trying to push an official ROM, or cooked one onto the machine now? Once you get down as far as bootloader based installation, activesync doesnt need to be involved, BUT you can only install the original ROM, which is presigned, since there is no way to run the lock-bypassing tools. If you don't have the original Rom, try and find it, or as close as you can get, in my sig link.

PS, if you can get as far as the WM splash you may be able to still just hard reset. It took me a while once to get it just right, after many failed attempts at juggling the buttons, when I was stuck in the same spot.

I had a problem close to this, and none of the ROMS in Profezza's links worked as it was looking for a specific Vendor ID when trying to reflash. I ended up going to http://www.t-mobile.com/wmupgrade/ pluging in my 15-digit IMEI number (found under the battery), downloaded their offical ROM and BAM! I was back in biz!

However, I had to do a combination of unlocking using the unlocker found in here (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=a1e428ed720bdf418c9e7c56ba37815f8d6dc552 36f5978e)and the one found on SurrealNetworks/dash site.

I dont wanna seem like a funny guy but after you take the battery out....in what step does it go back in??? :p

I was thinking the EXACT same thing. Many times (especially in these forums) people follow steps precisely to the letter when it comes to instructions. Any slight hiccup could be detrimental to the operation of your device! So anyone could mistakenly neglect to put the battery back in because it wasn't in the instructions. Just a thought...

have you tried the usb reset?
1 - Phone should be completely off and unplugged from USB.

2 - Hold down the SYM(camera) key and keep holding

3 - Plug in USB

4 - your phone should now be in bootloader mode!

Failing all that, you could always try taking it into your carrier and see if they can magic it back into life.

Good luck!

Oh, and if you have a storage card, remove it

If this fails you need to contact pdasmart or another service and they will have you send the phone to them. They will email you the cost of repair and you can decide from there you what you want to do if it costs to much all you have to pay is $8 to have it sent back to you.

no activesync will not recognize your phone when in bootloader. but your PC should recognize it. If you are in bootloader mode then try reflashing one of your phone's official ROMS. (ex: if your phone is a tmobile USA branded excalibur, then use either their official WM5 or WM6 rom) after you do that you can then re-flash any one of kavana's or ricks cooked wm 6.1 ROMS
