Hey guys, I've been having a problem with the wifi on my universal for awhile, it just won't turn on, antenna stays off, no scanning, it's just off.
Going into the Wireless lan settings in the control panel "Wireless LAN OFF" is displayed, click "Turn on WLAN" it thinks for a few moments then returns to off with nothing changed.
Does anyone know if this is fixable? It doesn't appera to be a software issue, as it has continued on 3 diffreent ROMs... so i'm not sure how to proceed

I don't have Universal, But did you test an official rom or a cooked rom ?! because some of the cooked roms don't have the right wifi driver :)

I don't think its the driver, since 3 different ROMs, and no one else has complained about such thingcs in any of those ROM's, also it does work sometimes but thats maybe 1 in 20 reboots.

hello people, fist time poster here. had my uni for about a month now. very useful device, I was loving using the wifi until 10 mins ago when the whole device turned off randomly whilst browsing through wifi. plugged it in to charge, when starting up I get a couple of errors saying certain things won't start. now wifi doesn't start and I get the same problems as others on here. do we have a solution to this?? also, can I actually turn this device off? I've tried holding the power button on for 20+ seconds and had no joy.

You mean "really" off, like as no battery would be inside?
Nope, you can't ;)
You can switch the active pda part off and set it to silent, but this wouldn't prevent the device from switching back on on phonecalls. Even if you turn off the radio stack it still would power the display's backlight on and show a notifier if a reminder was set up.
Really turning it off is only possible by removing the battery. Yes, it is a windows mobile device.
Concerning your problems after the crash you should be fine by coldbooting after recharging the battery. The latter one often causes some troubles with the Uni.

Hi Guys,
I have the same problem but on my HTC Artemis aka XDA Orbit. Only occurred when I was flashing with different ROMS. Even when i flashed original ROM still same thing.
I did read on the forum somewhere that the issue was due to the device not having a valid mac address.
Anyone shed any light on this matter?
There are tools out there for other HTC devices to get Wifi back but not sure if they will work on the uni as they dont work for the artemis.

I solved the problem of Wi-Fi turning off by going to ActiveSync - Connection Settings and enabling "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop" option.

I have had similar wifi problems with my uni,
My uni was working perfectly for a long while when using "Tomal's 7.7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=367448)" with Radio 1.18 . . . since then I tried testing with "T-Mobile official ROM AKU3.3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=409966)" where the flash process when without a hitch.
However I had to change roms again since the T-Mobile rom wasn't very good. but i never got as far as testing the wifi
- - - -
I then tried to flash Tomal's 8.5 Beta (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=454906), I ran into problems, and was stuck at the bootloader, I tried unlocking the uni with mtty, But i had copied and pasted the commands, and it kept on returning errors, after disconnecting and connecting with mtty again i tried typing in the commands and successfully unbricked my uni.
I attempted to flash Tomal's 8.5 Beta again, this time it worked without a hitch, but then I couldn't turn on wifi.
Wifi cannot be turned "on" from the comm manager or from WLAN. It just remains "off".
So I tried flashing back to Tomal 7.7 and wifi still didn't turn on.
Then I tried flashing Tomal 8.5 Beta again and still no wifi.
I've now tried flashing Radio 1.15 and - still no wifi
- - - -
I havn't the foggiest why wifi isn't functioning at all. Have I messed things up when I copied and pasted the commands into mtty?
Or did flashing the T-Mobile rom cause the problem?

I have a freind with the same problem.
I try to :
Update the ROM's, try several
Update the Radio Rom, try 1.09 and 1.18
Hard Reset several times
Soft reset several Times
Use alternative software, to turn on the WIFI.
And always no sucess.
What I have read is that in Athena PDA, some times during the process of Unlocking or upgrade, the device can loose the MAC ADDRES. I think is because of CID lock....
They develop an utility to set a new mac address , but I don't think it works on Universal.
I try to find a way to see the mac adresss of WLAN Card, but all the tools (ex: vxipconfig) can only see the mac addres if the wifi is turned on .
Also read something about the possibility to create a script vjvolubilis to turn on the wifi and run it before conmanager... Din't try....

WIFI doesnt start
Same here, I'm also unable to start wifi in the comm manager.

Some people here where able to find mac address in Prophet device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354848
"
Off course it will not work, different doc and different addresses
It is your cid block at n1, not the SPL, please use pdocread.exe like this
Pdocread.exe -n 0 0 0xaf0000 spl.nb
pdocread -n 1 0 0x40000 cidblock.bin
pdocread -n 1 0x40000 0x4000 -b 0x4000 gsmdata.bin
compress the files using 7-zip ultra compression and send them to my mail
I'll try to help
or the MAC adress can be found @ offset 3e5c in gsmdata.bin
"
Can we try to find where the mac address is ,and then use this info to write new mac on broken devices ?
Anybody help ?

I seem to have the same problem with my Benq-Siemens P51.
WiFi just won't turn on and if it accidentally does, it will never find an open network and has the MAC 00-00-00-00-00-00
Any hints or solutions are welcome!

Had a similar issue with my Diamond. Posted this a week or so ago:
I had the same Wifi will not turn on issue after I had several ROMs tried.
I gave up on an easy solution and I decided to install the latest (dutch) official rom. After that, I also changed the SSPL back to the original (1.35) version. Still WiFi wouldn't turn on. I started to look for my bill/warranty papers and then today, I dropped the phone, battery fell out, so the phone had another soft reset. When connecting to the PC, I noticed something (strange?): the font of the page on which you have to choose between activesync/dsikdrive/shared internet had changed wrt after the SSPL change. It was again to what it used to be when using the original ROMS. For me, this meant that something in the phone had changed, so I tried to switch on WiFi one more time. And guess what: it worked again! I don't understand why (maybe the drop itself?). I will keep on using WiFI and see if it remains stable and post it here.

Wiki says you can fix the problem by disassembling the phone:

Hey thanks alot for this I also agreed thats a hardware problem but am not technition so am afraid to open my phone myself to try and fix this if anyone has time r any videos showing were the wifi antena is located becouse I tryed to look for it but no luck just posting a video or picture of it will be greatly appreciated and again thanks for the wiki it looks like a hardware proublem :( but some people fixed it it was software for some and hardware but if it dont work no mater how much rom we flashed becosue I even tryed the WM5 and if that dont work then it must be a hardware problem.
PS when you try to turn on wifi does your PDA gets warm like you can feel it warming up?
I removed the battry cover like the wiki said and it seems to work I sow the wifi icon on but left now am able to go to the wifi settings but still it wont trun on al see what I can do but this is a big improvment so far :)

Also in the wiki you can find the "HTC Universal Service Manual" which have a very complete guide for disassembling the universal (it starts at page 12). You can see a photo of the wifi antenna location at page 18.

Hi,
I have found a way to fix this!
if your Wifi is not damaged (Broken hardware) then this solution will help you to fix the starting problem...
Works for HTC HD
but may work for all, its a simple action.
do this:
go to HKLM\ControlPanel\wifi\UIDelayAfterBoot=220
if you dont have this DWORD then create it!
It's will start the WIFI after 220 seconds on boot!
If your full boot takes less then 2 minutes, then you can change to 150
This fixed my problem!!!
Please reply if it solved your problem.
Good luck

Great thread, so glad I found it. I tried the 'create new DWord' and that enabled me to get WiFi running after a reboot, but then noticed I had an extra folder 'ETHERNET' which wasn't on my other devices (I have 3 Universals at the moment) so I deleted it, re-booted and now all is well!

Thanks, but I'm not sure how linking me to a stickied thread that doesn't mention wifi issues will help me? I've got roughly 20 ROMs available to me already without needing to look through the sticky.
If you have a link to the dis-assembly thread specifically mentioning the wifi issue I'd appreciate it. I already have the service manual that shows the WiFi antenna but no details as to what to try if it works intermittently.

Well I'm still trying different things. Have tried going back to the base T-Mobile ROM and working forward from there. I even went as far as to lock my extended ROM and had to unlock that again. Tried the SIM unlock again, tried radio 0.00.00 and then 1.18, back to 1.15 now.
I've tried a whole variety of different ROMs but no success either way.
Any other ideas as to what I can try? I've tried a few gentle drops to see if it's a dodgy connection but nothing else so far.
