This was posted in the $299 thread but its at the way back so I thought I would create a thread so people would have an easier time finding it. Apparently the guys at howard forums don't know jack.

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007/09/14/att-tilt-drops-some-knowledge-on-us/

$ 349 with 2 year sign up and data (though I imagine corp will be much cheaper)

release date is listed as late september in the docs.

I posted this over at Howard Forums...

There's an online vendor who sells the Kaiser who is offering them to me at $700 for a group buy. If anyone is in IL and is interested, lemme know. The only reason I want to limit it to people in IL is I can drive and meet them someplace so there's no payment/shipping issues. I'm not a reseller and I don't want to be a reseller. I'm just trying to get this as cheap as possible.

I dont think $700 is that cheap though. $600 maybe, I am curious to see what "group" means and will you be able to meet the minimum order in just IL.

I have to buy 5 to get that price. I have Me and 2 buddies from work. So technically I only need 2 more. Figured I'd offer it to the forum.

They are selling them out within days of getting them in stock at 850 so they aren't making much on these at 700. I have just bought a LOT of phones from them and directed a lot of sales their way.

Once AT&T's starts selling, I would think that prices will drop a little but I don't think we'll ever see an online vendor dip below the $700 mark. MMB is $749 which is still the lowest I've seen and he's the most reliable seller I've ever dealt with.

-Mc

Correction: I just checked his website and he raised the price to $779. :(

5 is a good deal, but at $700 that is too much and all you get is the front camera. ATT for $400 and no front camera is MUCH easier to swallow.

I agree. I just don't want to wait forever for them to release it. I've been holding off because I wanted to see what AT&T did to it. I hate crippled devices. I'm also reluctant to put the 8925 on my account as it could get me kicked off my data plan. A generic device isn't as automated for the system to verify against your plan.

What do you mean by getting kicked off your data plan? i have been using the media max bundle for over a year with my treo and my 8525 with no problems. i have never paid the outrageous 60 for a pda data plan.

could you please clarify?

I've been using an old old old medianet plan ( 1500 texts, 200 picture messages and unlimited data for $20/month ) with my 8125 and now 8525 for a year or two now and have never had any problems...

McHale
17th September 2007, 03:57 PM
I haven't had any problems either... yet. But they are upgrading the Telgence system to be more intelligent when it comes to appropriate data plans for particular phones. Since I don't have an AT&T branded phone, the system recognizes my phone as a generic HTC product that they think is an MDA (it's a K-Jam). I also use my Dash and it recognizes that as an HTC s620.

The new system (which hasn't fully gone into effect yet) prohibits a CSR from adding a Mediamax plan for a PDA phone. They just aren't compatible in the system. Before, they could add any data plan to any phone. That is changing.

They are looking at finding a way to audit your device and compare against your data plan automatically. If you check out your online account manager you will see how they try to deduce your phone from the system. That was phase 1 testing. It doesn't guess any of my devices properly because NONE of them came from AT&T. I'm afraid that if I add an AT&T device (8925), it will know for sure what phone it is and throw up a flag. At least if it doesn't know for sure, it's a manual process.

Don't get me wrong, it may never happen. But they are looking at it.

Since our plan (family plan but shows as a 'business account') doesn't allow any web management, here's what I'm going to try :

step 1) on or about the 20th of September, switch MY current phone number from Sprint to ATT and use an extra nokia GSM phone I have here (it's got a 3G SIM in it), and at the same time also switch my wife's phone (razr, already on ATT) to the same group plan. i'll have them put that $20 Media Net unlimited plan on that nokia phone.

step 2) when the 8925 becomes available, I'll go in and buy it, telling them it's going on my wife's number, do the 2 year contract extension to get the discount on the phone, but I *won't* add any data option on it

step 3) take SIM from pos Nokia phone w/ media net plan and insert into brand new 8925, yielding 8925 with $20 unlimited media net plan

any thoughts on my scheme here ? would i be better off doing all this over the phone to ATT or at the local store ?

thanks

Link is to an excerpt from the Boy Genius Report the list (go to BGR main page) is an actual ATT release schedule for the Holidays (now I'm kinda torn looking at the Panetech duo as well). Thought I would put it up

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007/09/17/want-to-get-your-htc-tilt-on-rejoice-with-att-on-september-25th/

$349 with rebates and a 2 year plan

Hopefully we will see the price of the Kaiser (non ATT branded) drop to match this release.

Very good plan (I've done something similar) I would reccomend over the phone, also make sure you do not use the cingular connection manager software package (just use internet sharing). That said with the changes to the ATT system the loop holes may go away (I just want T mobile to roll out their 3g so ATT has to drop their prices).

Kaiser - 826
8925 - 819

Yet the AT&T version without contract will be like 599...

I'll do you one better. If you call to upgrade your phone and they ship it to you, you're supposed to call them up and give them the IMEI so they can add it to your account. If you NEVER call, they never add it to your account and sometimes never change your contract. This is the route I think I'm going to take.

But I am doing what you essentially are. I have a drawer full of GSM phones that when it's time for me to deal with customer service (like a get a new SIM or something), I pop the SIM into one and take that to the store. They always try to upsell me a new phone which I kindly decline. It's also funny that they say my 6820 (which is the phone on my account officially) is too old and needs upgrading. It's got both US frequencies and EDGE so I would gain nothing by upgrading. I don't live in a 3G area...

ATT has a connection manager software package that they try to get you to use for tethering your phone as a modem, it also has a hotspot locator. Don't use it (just use the built in internet sharing, or if it is taken off the tilt get a cab file for the kaiser comm manager). It will automatically detect your phone (and as an app it sucks). Tethering is really the only way they differentiate the higher level plans (30 vs 40-60) so if you are not going to use your phone as a tethered modem you should have no issues running on a lower cost plan.

On my 6600 on sprint, there is an app called "wmodem.exe" that i use when i'm tethering, which i do very rarely (maybe 10 mins per month)

Is one of the things you are talking about the same as wmodem ?

The store I got my 8525 from was an AT&T authorized reseller, not directly AT&T. Perhaps their return policy is different. I knew the Tilt was coming at some point so I kept everything in excellent shape and ready to return. They had no problem doing it. Best of Luck!

i just want a picture of the AT&T tilt. that way we can see if the back rubber thing says GPS on it. if it does, everythin is fine for me. i cant see why they would take teh gps out. the most they would probably do is charge their own service, kinda like t-mobile does with wifi. however you can probably also use 3rd party apps like tomtom and not have to pay for AT&T's service. this is only an assumption though.

Corporate stores always do - no question. I also wouldn't fry it. Just walk in and say you called AT&T and they told you to go into the store to get your SIM replaced. Explain you have the issues listed above and they'll hand it over for free.

While you're there, don't forget to ask for your PUK codes. :)

how much does a SIM card cost at the ATT office ? My whole plan hinges on getting a new SIM card and I'd rather spend a little now to save a lot later and not take a chance on them not wanting to replace the non-3G SIM

I'm having a difficult time deciding on my "second phone."

My primary phone is the Treo 750. It works best for me during the work day as far as entering appointments, text messaging, sending and receiving email and use as a phone. Its not great for web browsing for sure due to the small crappy screen.

My second phone is kind of my weekend/evening fun phone. I'll use it via Wifi if I'm in a spotty coverage area, do a lot more surfing, less text entry etc.

I had an 8525, sold it and bought an iPhone, but I really dislike the iPhone interface. I'm tempted to go back to the 8525, but also eyeballing the Tytn II/Tilt. Then I saw the Advantage and thought maybe THAT was the way to go.

Any of you Kaiser watchers have opinions on the Kaiser/Tilt vs. the Advantage?

If you look through this and the other threads or do a search there are several locations recommended to buy now. And yes you can use your 8525 sim card

the link to amazon doesnt work anymore. I will do a search. but any assistance/recommendations would be helpful. I would hate to have to buy the 8525 again at full price when i could get the new one.

I bought an 8525 just before learning of the kaiser about 37 days ago. Last week I walked into the AT&T store and they let me return the 8525 I had bought since i was within the return policy so that I can get the Kaiser when it comes out. The awesome part is instead of just reverting my contract back to what it was, they completely cancelled it! When the Tilt is released I can just walk in and upgrade :)

If you can stand to let them hold your money for 30 days I'd just get a new 8525 (or a loaner while yours is being fixed) and exchange it for a Tilt when the time comes.

I've been using an old old old medianet plan ( 1500 texts, 200 picture messages and unlimited data for $20/month ) with my 8125 and now 8525 for a year or two now and have never had any problems...
The 8925 will be my first 3G. So I assume I will need a new 3G SIM card + data plan. Where do you find anything unlimited today for $20??? best I could find was unlimited Data Connect for $59.99 - anyone has any better idea?? tks.

I think the chepest unlimited plan you can get now is the Premier PDA Personal Max UNL Add-On , which is unlimited data and 1500 SMS for $33.99 - but you have to be a qualifying user to get in. I'm a state employee, so I'm in, but I also have something called "Passport Unlimited" on my debit card that gives me the same rates. Best you can do is try to get in with all you email addresses and hope one clicks. ;)

OK I know many folks here know way more that your average AT&T store "worker bee", but I did get some information out of a store manager here in San Diego. They claimed that they would have stock, for sale, of the 8925 sometime during the first two weeks of October. They were not aware of the other rumor I have seen circulating about a 9/25 launch date.

My poor pda2k is really falling apart this darn thing just can not come soon enough. Ugh.

SOrry about being off topic. Yes i was referring to tytn II. However, i was under the impression i could use the iphone sim card in my 8525 once i could get it fixed. However, i just found that this is not the case. SO im returning it(not paying the restocking fee) and i just bought a tytn II. silly boy... Take your Nokia in with your SIM card and explain to them how your phone keeps giving you invalid SIM errors and sometimes won't register. They'll give you one for free. :)

Went to ATT today, got a FREE! 3G SIM card. I didn't even have to feign anything, I just took my old POS Nokia in there sans-card and she poked a new one in it for me.

Now all I gotta do is figure out which MediaNet plan to put on the Nokia that will work best and cheapest for unlimited internet when I transfer the SIM to the 8925.

Sorry for being so slow responding, it was a busy day :)

Go to http://www.wireless.att.com/businesscenter/?WT.svl=3 and on the right where it says "You may qualify for employee discounts. Find out", put in your email addresses. Your company, school, bank, etc. may be in one of AT&T's premier plan programs. If you're a federal, state, or educational employee, chances are you qualify.

The discount is usually around 15% on service plans ($39.99 becomes $33.99, for example), an you can usually buy phones for the post-rebate price without having to go through the rebate process. On PDA/smartphones, you get deeper discounts with a data plan - the Treo 750 is $99 with a 2-year unlimited data plan, and the 8525 $199, with no rebates. On a 700 minute family plan ($61 for two lines) with an 8525 with PDA Personal Max UNL ($34) and a second phone with no data plan, you save about $15 a month over the normal rates. Usually the phones are less, too, but not always - for example the 3125 is $99 on both sites, but the retail side has a $50 rebate. Kinda moot when you're saving $150 on the 8525, tho.

It's no SERO, but you aren't going to be stuck with CDMA, either ;)

they edited the story between the time I linked it and the time you posted. Earlier they said the Tilt shared the same order date as the Q9. Here is what the linked article used to say:

We've just been tipped on a fresh roadmap for AT&T's fall launches, and goodness, there's a little something for everyone in here! Note that these are order dates, subject to change -- not necessarily in-store dates -- so your mileage may vary trying to grab these devices on the dates you see here. First up, LG rolls out the CG180 and CU515 "Chiwoo" on October 2. Nokia adds another color for the 6555 on October 11, red, which we think will suite it quite nicely. Speaking of new colors, Sony Ericsson brings a black version of the W580i on October 9. The Pantech Duo -- a device we suspect many folks are getting fired up over -- should hit on the same day. From Motorola, the Q9 Global becomes orderable just a few days from now, September 25, alongside the Tilt from HTC. UTStarcom outs the AMOI-sourced 5700 on October 9, giving folks a low cost (albeit non-3G) Windows Mobile option. RIM gets busy with the Curve 8310 on October 4, effectively sunsetting the original 8300 by adding GPS into the mix. On the data modem side, Sierra and Option will both be contributing HSUPA devices in October. Let's hear it for speedy uploads! Follow the break for the full roadmap.

I wasn't directing my verbal attack at you bro, just the morons responsible for yet another failed attempt at a launch by the dip shits at at&t. I called their customer service just now and informed them that they are as usual ruining another launch of a somewhat popular device and I am sure that they are bound to lose some sells/ contracts. Of course I know they do not care, but I at least wanted to insult them a bit LOL.

I personally think in future they need to be a bit more tight lipped on future devices so this speculative bullshit doesn't get spread all over the net time and time again. Frankly I would rather not even know about it until maybe a week before the "actual" release so I could keep my sanity.

With all due respect, AT&T hasn't posted anything, just lots of speculation from every store front jock and web nerd. The problem is folks like us, who have been watching things like Kaiser for the last year in sites like this, we know too much!

To end the frustration, step away from the keyboard or buy a TyTn II now, that's what I did, with no regrets.

Hah, you talk like AT&T is the worst. Verizon has been trying to launch the i760 and xv6800 for 7 months. AT&T pushing the 8925 back a month is small potatoes in the big picture.

Maybe with VZW and Sprint moving to GSM soon, the prices for unlocked phones here in the US will drop a bit. Then we can just forget about the delays.

I have to agree here... AT&T has never came out and said they were going to release the phone on X day... instead we have a bunch of keyboard commando's with to much time on their hands and "in the know" contacts that dont really know... So until you see something directly from ATT then i would disregard it and just hope they are going to launch then...

There have been some articles on Vodaphone and Verizon lately - e.g. http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/09/21/verizon-chooses-lte-for-4g-network-hell-freezes-over/)

As you are all aware, Vodaphone has a large stake in Verizon. Verizon knows that it's biggest downfall is that they have no international service.

Verizon may feel pressure to eventually leave CDMA and go to a GSM network. The cost may be enormous. Currently, the signal used for 3G on GSM networks isn't too much different from CDMA.

The way that Verizon and Sprint's CDMA works is not as good as AT&Ts. I've tested both with new 3G devices and I get consistently better performance on AT&T's in terms of speed. I'm no engineer but I think AT&T uses one band for phone and the other for internet access. This is why one can talk and browse at the same time. I doesn't work as well on the CDMA networks.

I see a convergence coming. All phones should have a SIM type card.

No, they have to wait like everyone else too. The good thing is that "they" were sent out ANOTHER 8525 to hold out until the 8925 actually came out, where it would still be sent for free of course. ;)

EDIT - ATT just called me and let me know that they received word that my local ATT store should be getting a shipment in tomorrow (friday). I am taking this worth a grain of salt. Kind of interesting how they actually called me, though.

Wow, well that is much better to actually hear from AT&T that you will be getting it, rather than rumors and "sources" telling us when it will arive. well i sure hope you get it, tell us how well the device is when you do. and PLEASE tell us if it has GPS.

The only evidence I see of GPS is "Get TeleNav"

The worry people have is not that it won't have GPS, but it will have a GPS locked in such a way that it can only be used with TeleNav (Which is what AT&T did for the GPS on one of the Blackberry devices.)

Oh noes... chrome buttons??? can you say ugly? And it has the white numeric keys just as everyone feared - and it looks like no HTC home plugin either.

I'm glad I got mine unlocked from HTC... looks much classier than the AT&T version. I wonder in what ways it will be crippled?

It looks like it has a link to Telenav.... prolly means no GPS either.

Pretty sure its been confirmed that the gps is in the device but since they do not include the tom tom software they still show telenav. Although Im sure its included I for one think AT&T would have a riot on the hands if the f_ _ked up to that extent. Just my .02

Does HTC have a "parts" department ?

Any chance of being able to buy non-ugly keytops and d-pad ?

I work for AT&T Mobility. Just to be clear, I'm not puking out the Corporate Propaganda here. I am first and foremost a consumer as well. I'm always looking for best product for my money too.

* The 8925 is being launched in 2 versions. One with cameras and one without for security restricted users. Many companies do not allow camera phones for fear of corporate espionage but there are plenty of power users that work for those companies.
* Video calling is going to be available. It takes time to build out a true 3G network and provide all the functionality. I'm not challenging anyone's intelligence here but most consumers are not aware that some parts of the US are operating on Cellular Networks that span as far back as the 1940s. This is when AT&T originally launched Cellular service for large fleet services and government/LE use. Over the years these systems have obviously been upgraded but you have to consider US carriers have more than 50 times the market to cover than the average European or Asian carriers so it will naturally take considerably longer to upgrade.
*New features built in: GPS, Blackberry 4.0, WM6 Professional standard(won't last long for anyone on this forum though), 256/128 ROM/RAM Qualcomm 400MHz chip.
*By the end of 2008 AT&T should have full True 3G UMTS/HSPDA capability in every market we are licensed in. Network upgrades are built out on a basis of population density. The largest markets with the most users get upgrades first. It's killing me too waiting for it. I used to work in Central Fl. I would have had 3G 1 1/2yrs ago. Now I'm in TN and we should have it by the end of the year. Fingers crossed.
*As of right now full retail price at release is supposed to be $549.99. 2yr contract should be $299.99. Prices obviously can change at any time. I would guess they will not be delivered to the stores until the 8525 stocks are depleted.

Dan.308 or anoyone else who might have experience with this...

on Sept 9th i got a new 2 year plan with ATT and an 8525. i knew there was another version coming out, but i thought it was going to be a LOT longer than one month. During the signup process, the guy at the counter mentioned that the new one is coming out in a month... i was not happy to hear that. He told me a "trick"... and i'm wondering if it actually works.

He said that if the new version doesnt come out before my 30 days are up, i can return it for a full refund to one store, and then go to another store and get a different phone with a NEW 30 day return. That way, i can wait a bit longer for the new phone.

My questions:
1. Is this true?
2. Am i still going to get my discount from the 2 year contract i signed?
3. Is there anything else i need to be aware of?

I am only partially pleased with my 8525. It's nice, yes, but the 8925 has the features i wanted (and actually thought the 8525 had until i looked closer at it). I REALLY dont want to be locked in for 2 years with the 8525. I'm disappointed with myself for not checking these forums before switching over to ATT.

while(!(linux)){wm} , I can confirm at least part of this strategy. I bought an 8525 online back about the 13th of august and found this forum the next day while looking for a new rom to put on it when it arrived. Needless to say, I wanted to get a Kaiser. I took my phone back to an AT&T store on the 30th day and returned it for a full refund, and the guy there called to have my contract reverted back to the way it was when i bought the 8525. The rep he talked to actually decided it was easier to completely drop my current contract rather than revert, so now instead of having a 10 month old contract that I have to fight for an early upgrade on I have a completely clean slate!

I have also heard of others using your strategy, which seems to work as long as you go to different stores.

Ugh. I'm getting impatient. This 3125 SUCKS. :(

I'm hoping i can do something similar. I have a few friends with old cingular phones lying around, and i'm thinking of putting my sim in one of those for a month or so while i wait. I guess i just need to verify that i'll still get the discount for my 2 year contract when the 8925 finally comes out.

That just sucks...That can work out for them. The people who really want this phone, will get the TyTN II instead of the AT&T branded version. So AT&T doesn't lose out on profits on the hardware because of how subsidized it is, while the few people who don't know better, will pay them the $10/month for TeleNav.

psyferre
2nd October 2007, 09:26 PM
I figure AT&T thinks: "Why unlock the GPS? Those that care enough to buy the unlocked phone instead will probably also know that a cooked rom will eventually come out. They'll buy our phone and wait just to save money. It also liberates our salesmen because they can truthfully say that the telenav service is required! Now we have all basic customers and those waiting for a rom using telenav, and our device sales have hardly suffered at all!"

 It makes business sense, but it still sucks.

Wish i knew enough to help with the unlocking effort. :(

Yeah - but how long will that really last once cooked ROMs start to hit? I'm sure that if someone can figure out how to gut and cook a ROM they can figure out how to unlock the GPS. Personally, I'm stuck having a phone that my company buys for me. When the 8925 is actually available, they will let me get one (by trading my 4-month-old 8525 to someone looking to upgrade from a "normal" phone). So, I'm one of those that will have to live with what AT&T has to offer in the unit - not what I "could" get by shelling out double the price for the HTC model. It is too bad AT&T appears to be pulling a move like this, but seeing that the chip is in the phone and the functionality appears to be enabled in some form, then I have no doubt the great minds on this site will develop a way to unleash it.

HeHe Max I know it's frustrating but I remember the same with the BB8700 and the 8525 and ect....The point is next year we will be talking about the latest greatest PDA that we are waiting to be released. And you can go to the Nokia forums and there are the same posts just different phone and Tmob is talking about the latest greatest sidekick and on and on. It's fun or we all would go get that free candy bar phone aned move on.

d:D

you're right, it should be fun waiting for the phone to come, and i am trying to keep that in perspective. but when i first heard about the 8925, i really did not think it was so far away from its launch.

more than anything i am frustrated by the fact that i feel like i already invested the time and energy into figuring out which phone i want and don't really want to go back to the drawing board comparing phones. if i had any inkling this phone would be coming out 2 months later than i thought it would, i likely would have eliminated it from consideration. unfortunately, a phone rep at an AT&T store told me about the phone and that it would be coming within a few days. i had no reason to doubt him. little did i know what lay ahead!

for what it is worth, every AT&T store I have visited has told me the GPS will not be "locked" to telnav and that you can buy software instead to use the GPS.

And FWIW, only the HoFO poster JP Whoregan is claiming that it is locked. Another poster there with an 8925 is claiming it's not locked.

well, I saw one of the Blackberrys that they had locked to telenav. not sure how they did it, but until you signed up for telenav, the GPS did not work. Once you had signed up, the gps worked with all programs.

So, bottom line, it is possible ... but presumably (hopefully) we will figure out how to undo this lock before too long.

I'm not saying that locking isn't possible, I'm saying someone (presumably an AT&T employee) with an 8925 has specifically stated that the 8925 is NOT locked down. See here (http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=9982529&postcount=16).

TeleNav is a monthly service, so couldnt you add the feature, run TeleNav, and cancel right away. It would cost $4.99 prorated to do that.

You do NOt have to activate TeleNav in order to jump start another GPS software. Confirmed by 2 different guys over @ HoFo. One guy just d/led google maps from the start and the GPs locked on and it started working w/google maps w/o ever using TeleNav.

I do have TomTom installed but still find this free utility worth keeping on the Kaiser:

http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/default.htm

And if you're looking to "jumpstart" your GPS using some APP that will try to lock on for a while, this will do the trick nicely.

Just got a txt from my buddy @ at&t. The Tilt is in their system and he was able to order me one. He estimates receiving it next week. "Demand is high and they are very hard to get" he said. (I asked him to get me 2 as a joke and he said that is impossible) From the way it sounded high volume markets will be getting more than others. Where I am it might be a while then.

So I hope this is good news for people. Hopefully I am 1 week away from saying goodbye to my 8125! :D

Same here. Im wondering why most of the people that have bought the HTC branded one are bashing & making idiotic comments about the people that are purchasing the 8925? Are you guys pissed that you spent a lot more money for a device to later find out you can get practically the same device(with the help of xda developers in unlocking, ROMs, etc) for less? Sounds like someone is tired of waiting for the At&t release? You shouldn't think of it as bashing someone who wants to save money. It's bashing someone for being impatient for the at&t release when the phone is already available (for a few hundred more).
Personally, i'm glad i got the unbranded version for the aesthetic look of the device, and even how it was packaged. At&t is not going to wow you over with it's great packaging, but it's got the right price. For some, the all chromed out dpad buttons and the blue paint on the keys may not make a difference, but that (and my impatience to get this lovely device) was enough for me. I admit, having xda unlock the cid would be just dandy (swell, even), but in all honesty, i have no real complaints about the stock rom. Any of the issues that i've had is from the random software that i've been piling in.
Oh, calling people "idiots" just adds to the whole negative vibe. Can't we all just get along?

The only negative I have said is that its ugly which it is. I certainly don't mind paying xda for my TyTN ll. Looks to me and having an unlocked HTC phone is more important to me and the money is not as important to me as to some. I may buy one of the 8925's as a back up cause if you turn those white keys a certain way it looks like your flipping or being flipped off:eek: :D

I guess for me the $$ & non-usefulness of the front cam on the HTC wasnt worth more than my impatience & reasoning. Since AT&T isnt using the front cam on anything, I dont see the need to pay for it when I have a choice of getting a phone that wont have it & be saving more than a couple hundred dollars. Why would you then bash someone anyway for waiting for a phone to be released when they are choosing to get practically the same phone but for less? C'mon the only real difference is no front cam & its unlocked on the HTC (minus the added programs put by AT&T) Do I see that worth an extra $400, no way. Am I "weird" for waiting for a device that may be worth saving some money, so be it. I honestly dont care what the packaging looks like since Im not going to be taking it around everywhere and showing it to people. Again, what AT&T striped from the phone was the cam, which costs pennies, which to me I wasnt going to pay $400 more for it furthermore it being locked which we all know that wont be the case for very long(which would be free:D ). Hey I didnt start pointing fingers @ people and making little sarcastic comments about damn why did you pay so much, shouldnt you have waited? I was in the same boat as you, I was about to buy the unlocked version if AT&T didnt announce anything by oct 5th, but hey its like they read my mind, and out of the clouds came the official announcement. Yippe for me

Yeah I noticed that too. My guess is they have the $50 data-plan rebate that's been known plus $50 online purchase savings. So that would be $399 - 100 = $299.

Hopefully the price on the Premier site is just as good :).

Front camera was removed (not a major feature especially if you're an AT&T customer, but probably takes a decent amount off the cost of the unit)
It's SIM-locked (Unlocked phones always command a decent price premium) - No big deal if you're an AT&T customer
The advertised price is the contract subsidized price, which requires a 2-year committment to AT&T. The non-contract price will be higher (I'm hearing $549-$599). That's still a decent amount cheaper than the TyTn II, but the TyTn II commands the aforementioned price premium for being unlocked.
It apparently has a few rebates contingent on the user committing to an additional data plan with a minimum value of $39.99/month

I've got MediaNet now. Looks like it would take roughly 15 months at saving $20 bucks a month to break even on a $599 Tilt. Of course some people on this forum seem to upgrade to a new phone every 4 months, so it might not work for everybody. I assume MediaNet would give you all the access the PDA plan will give you?

In my experience over the last year or so with my 8125, yes it will. I receive push e-mail/calendar/contact updates from an Exchange server, and surf the Web every day with the Medianet plan.

My only question is 3G - I assume Medianet will give you unlimited 3G data access?

Can anyone tell me if Cingular/AT&T's network is faster than T-Mobile's? If so how much & is it worth it based on the fact that I'd be switching from a $20 (T-Mob) to a $45 (AT&T) monthly data plan. My contract is just about up with T-mobile so I wouldn't mind switching.
I know a lot of you guys say you shouldn't switch carriers just for hardware, but all I really use my PDA for is data (Emails, Texts & mobile web). So going from my MDA to a Kaiser/Tilt is worth switching carriers IMO.
Finally is it possible to remove all of the junk apps that AT&T has on an OEM Tilt? I use Tom Tom, Wisbar, Opera & SBSH weather. Besides that I don't need or want any of the other junk AT&T bundles with the tilt...

Can you elaborate a little on the significance of this difference, please? Thanks.

Network Address Translation. This means your phone on Media net REALLY has an ip of "10.x.x.x" or "192.168.1.1" or whatever internal address ATT has setup. COMPARED TO an external IP address of 168.x.x.x or 172.x.x.x.

The difference here is no one can connect to an INTERNAL address from the outside. From outside a network you have to connect to the EXTERNAL address.

The NAT part comes in like this.
ATT has an external address of whatever "168.x.x.x". If something is trying to get to your phone it hits that generic external address and is then TRANSLATED into your phone's REAL IP address of "10.x.x.x". Because the traffic hits ATT's address before it hits your phone's address ATT can choose what it wants to filter and allow you to receive. No one can communicate directly to your phones WAN modem without going through ATT without some major hacking/investigating.

Um.. I think that's it. :D

T-Mobile doesn't have 3G yet, so in the areas where AT&T has 3G, it's considerably faster. In EDGE areas it should be comparable.

Once you've used 3G anything less is substandard.

You can still get the $399 price for a 2 year contract. You just get a $100 MIR if you get unlimited pda data too. You can keep MediaMax or switch to pda unlimited until you get the rebate and then switch back to MediaMax.

Fortunately for me, I plan on using the upgrade on my secondary account, so the MediaMax plan will be on my super old Nokia phone they think I still have. Not sure if I'll even bother with the pda data rebate. Depends on the pricing from the premier site.

AT&T are getting wise to that and cutting people off from media max who have PDA phones. Article was posted on boygenius and engadget just recently about that.
AT&T's data plans are rediculously high. I get unlimited (ok edge only) from Tmobile for 19 bucks. That includes all the hotspots. 3G is great I agree but really for most things edge is fine I get 145KBPs unless I am trying to dl a HUGE amount of data I have no problem.
