I'm brand new here, & w/ GPS & WinMo . . . Will TyTn II's TomTom speak street names or only directions?

Is this the full version of TomTom? I was turned off by TomTom in the past because it was tied to a device id which was a real hassle whenever I upgraded my handheld and you exceeded their 2 device rules. You had to FAX receipts, photocopies of the manual, discs, etc. and then wait, it would take weeks to get things straightened out.
Is it still tied to the device where you have to go online and use their tool to unlock, etc.?

It is full version, but your device has it's own DEVICE ID which is needed to ACTIVATE your map (if you bought one).
The application itself is fully functional, and always free. But not the map :)

Hmmm...this seems different from years back now :).
Years back I had a Palm, I installed TomTom from the CDs (5 or 6 of them). I loaded the maps for my area and when TomTom started up, it would detect the device id. I had to go to the TomTom website, put in my S/N and device id and the TomTom would generate a key for my device that I had to enter.
When I would upgrade my Palm every 6-12 months, I would have to go back to the website. The website allowed only 2 "activations" before you had to go through the system.
Is this the same thing you have to do for maps now? Or has it always been that way and I just didn't realize I was really activating maps by going to the website?

Still the same.
To activate you need your device ID + product code.

How do TomTom software upgrades work? I know our devices come with 6.032 or something like that but it is an OEM install and would not let me install it to the storage card. If i order TomTom on CD i will probably not get 6.032 but something earlier. Do they offer software downloads from their site?
Thanks. I really need to get GPS software ordered and an leaning towards TomTom because it actually works well on my device. lol

I believe you can get *the* version of TomTom (and maps) that you need from the HTC store. It uses Expansys...

What's the build # on that? I.e. 6.032.8901 - build # would be 8901 (made up).

Thanks, no worries. I tried to construct a URL for TomTomHome which would download that, but either the name is different or I don't have the correct magic applied :(

Does anyone know why the TyTn II version of TOMTOM (the one on the CD) always when you start it the sound is off, you need to go into the settings in tomtom to turn the sound back on (this is stupid bacause it is another thing to do when you get into the car)

Churchill,
Strange, I got no problem like that, and I use TomTom from the CD.

I've seen that problem with the sound being off when you startup. It sometimes seems to sort itself out without changing the setting, or maybe changing the volume (using left/right keys) gets it going.
Strange...

Simons19!
Thnx your tip using left/right key it sorts it out indeed, I can live with this since it is pretty easy and requires almost no effort...

That would be .8351...
Also- FYI- you can install the maps to the storage card, and the app will run from MM and auto-find the maps...

Yes when TomTom starts up the audio is turned off (for some reason). But you can just turn the volume/scroll wheel once and the audio will come right on, no need to dig around the menu's.
