any way to replace the Mikesoft BT module to widcomm....
i mean incorporate it into the ROM...thanks...
ya also getting the battery latch proplem..but think it's due to my battery latch getting loose...
anyway can't wait till Mg releases the A03 officially....
I'm experiencing the battery latch problem too, when I set the x50v on a table for a few seconds it turns it off and when I turn it on it says the latch was open so it was put into standby.
The latch seems to be tightly shut to me.

Hi All,
I looked, but did not see the answers for this. I have not used the SD card procedure before, although it seemed to work fine on my Axim X50v. Can someone tell me:
1. When I do a hard reset in the future, do I follow the SD card ROM procedure or the normal steps?
2. Is it okay for me to erase the ROM files from my SD card or should I leave them alone?
3. My machine is working perfectly, ay least to my needs, on the WM6 A03 ROM. However, it freezes when trying to read the CD card. Is this the filesys problem you have been discussing here?
TIA for your help and thanks to those who worked so hard to create/revamp this program.

whats there to fix ? I use WPA on my x50v and wrt54g and no issues what so ever.
Although there is a bug with the wireless, on a soft reset it seems to be on according to WM but the hardware is off because I can't get any signal. Gotta turn it off and back on in order to turn it on.
But meh soft reset is once in a blue moon thing so no worries.

Hi! I found this forum today, and decided to upgrade my X50v to WM6, from PPC2003SE. I got to the bootloader, and I successfully installed the WM5 bootloader. However, when the WM5 upgrade is done, the ppc won't turn on!! I have followed directions, and just after the upgrade is done and I get the message, i do a hard reset (reset + power), my x50v turns off and... stays off!!
What am I doing wrong??? (the SD card was freshly formatted to FAT32)
Thanks for your help guys!!
I can still get to the bootloader...
Sorry for the double post!! But I thought this thread is the right place for my question...

@Dividee: WPA is also not working for me, with several x50v PDAs :( I switched back to WEP, but this is not the best solution. I have tried the device with WM 2003 and WM5 and WPA worked with this versions but not with WM6.
There is a special thread for this, but also without any results.
I do not really understand, why WPA works on some devices and on some devices not. But unfortunately I am not the lucky one :(

My car charge not working with A03 beta. LED is ON but it's not really charging.
This is my first time try WM6 on X50V, so not sure if A01/A02 have this issue or not. I remember my HTC smartphone had same issue with earlier WM6, but newer WM6 ROM fixed it.

I own PPC Dell X50V.
Upon performing upgrades from WM 2003SE (can't work with MN6 - too slow), playing with WM5 A02 and also with A05 (MN works better, but crashes often because too low free memmory: arround 28 Megs free RAM when in iddle - at startup).
I to decided to upgrade to WM6 A03.
And the results:
I will stick with this version since I have the best results:
- great interactivity,
- fast responses
- realiability and especially enough free RAM
(when device boots it still has arround 35 Megs of free RAM).
- Navigon 6.2 runs very smoothly (while navigating), device still has arround 10 Megs of free RAM.
Good job MagLite!
Keep up such a good work!

more people wondering if it works on an x50 *sigh*
READ THE FLAMING TITLE!!! (although it's not actually on fire, i'd rather not swear)...
I still have wifi issues on WPA-PSK and my stepfather is being a bit of a wierdo and not trusting me to change them to a more secure one =/
apart from that, recently i turned my axim off, yet it apparently remained on, and drained the main + backup battery within around 1-2 days :/

Ok, I am confused as people are talking about renaming files for the 2003 upgrade to WM5.
I d/led the file archive in the first post of this thread. The file name of the rar starts with "IMG" and inside there isn't an .nbo file, etc.
I had troubles with rapidshare and I couldn't d/l other files but I noticed the file name of that archive is different in this other thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1430712&posted=1
Why is the archive for 2003SE upgrade different in this thread vs. the other thread? I d/led the file from the other thread this morning and I now see it has the nbo file and the crc file...
Was there a mistake in the first post on this thread?
To clarify, for people with 2003SE
The other thread links to this file: http://rapidshare.com/files/53847340/AximX50v_WM5_A01_EN.rar
This thread links to this file:http://rapidshare.com/files/65328906/img-41464-Dell_Axim_x50v_A01_ROM.rar.html

Here is what I did from WM5 A02 to WM6 A03.
Download the A03 files, while its downloading stick in a sd card (doesn't have to be big, 512mb is big enough) format it on your pc as FAT32!.
Extract the zip file and copy the content on to the root directory of the SD card (meaning the 2 files in the zip file must be the only 2 files on that sd card nothing else should be on there)
Pull SD card out of cpu, turn off axim, stick sd card in to axim, turn the axim off again (it usually turns on when a card is put in), Hold the POWER button + Wireless toggle button (on the side) and tap the reset button at the back with the stylus and now you should see the SD card programmer bla bla.
Wait a bit till it shows the file name, press the center button of the joystick selecting it and the rest is easy as cake.
Please make sure your running off a fully charged battery and don't have it hooked up to a cradle (if you want you can hook it up to power directly but not the cradle)
WM2003 users have to upgrade to WM5 A02 first before upgrading to WM6 I believe.
AND GUYS THERE IS NO NNEED TO GOTO A01 -> A02 -> A03. you can jump to A03 right away.

I am pretty new to this but am running maglite's WM6 A02. I was wondering if this version has "a2dp" or widcomm? As I understand these are (1 of 2) necessary to use my bluetooth headset to listen to music.
If so, can someone point me to a thread that may help me figure out how to listen to music with my motorola HS850 headset (preferrably a thread that has shown to work with a Maglite WM6 release)?? I have tried a few things already but am getting confused?!

Anyone use dreye for ppc here?
It is a dictionary program.
It has a function call instant translate.
You double tap a word to highlight it,then tap a small icon to call out explanation result.
Usually,I use word mobile to view txt file.
Today,I found it can't catch highlighted word.If I highlight 1st word,for example,"home",the result is "A".Then I highlight 2nd word,for example,"doggy",explanation result is 1st's one---"home".That is strange,I have tried several older versions rom,"Dell Axim X50v WM6 A02 Preview Release 1" work OK.WM6 emulator as well.The following newer version start to have problem.
updated:I restore A03 spb backup on A02 PR 1 rom, problem happen again,I think it may cause by registry string. But I don't know where it hide.Anybody have idea? Thanks very much.

It seems to me that with this and with WM5 the solution shouldn't be trying to disable Filesys.exe. Maybe we should try to give it exactly what it wants. Is it possible to write a program/script that would turn the Axim on ever 4 hours or so for about 15 minutes (leaving the screen off and optionally disabling wireless), allow filesys to do its thing, and then turn the unit off automatically? I think a script would be pretty easy to write, but it would be better if there was a program that could handle things like the device being turned on and off while filesys was running, what to do with wireless, what to do in low-battery situations, etc.
Thank you very much for all the help, Maglite.

For all those who will whine about a lack of future development from Maglite, remember that there would have been no rom for WM5 or WM6 if not for him.

thx so much for all the work! your work is truly amazing and the speed is simply awsome. they all work fine for me except windows live messenger .
All the way from A01 beta to A03 beta , I have tried every single one of them, when I install windows live messenger fresh after hard reset than I can sign in without any problems . however, if I restart the wireless or soft reset , the following error comes up: ' there's a connectivity problem, make suee u aee in an area with good reception and try again '
and I can never sign in msn ever again without a hard reset.
is this a problem with the rom or the program or it's just me?

Hello All,
I am upgrading from 2003 SE Version 4.21. 1088, Build 14260.2.0.5, ROM version A05 to WM5 A01, hoping to complete all the way to WM6. First, I downloaded the file in: "Attention! If you have Windows Mobile 2003SE ROM on your device, FIRST, please download THIS ARCHIVE (RAR 32.4 MB), and update your PDA to A01 Windows Mobile 5 ROM.", etc.
The RAR 32.4 MB was downloaded from RapidShare: img_41464-Dell_x50v_A01_ROM.rar. The unpacked files, which I copied to the root of a FAT32 SD card, look like this:
AximUpdate.exe
AximX50v_WM5_A01EN.IMG
EnterBootLoader.exe
FullScreen.exe
SUUResource.dll
SUUServer.dll
I’ve tried to install several times with no success. I get the SD bootloader banner okay but it puts out a “no suitable image found” followed by a “update failed, please try again”.
I downloaded the RAR file, unpacked with WinRAR, re-formatted the SD to FAT32 – did all these several times, too, but no help.
Appreciate any help. Thanks.

Try going to dells website and following instructions there. For this update you need to sync the pda to your computer and install from Your computer.
When you go to put WM6 on you use the SD card and loader there should be two files for this. good luck

I have one problem perhaps maybe someone can confirm or deny it being only me or not. I can only use one battery??? I drain a battery to 10% or so and take it out and put a fresh charged battery in. ONly it leaves it at 10 % I take the battery i took out charge it back to full while in the pda. PUt the battery that it told me was 10% back in and it says it is fully charge. Does this make sense or do i need to explain it better.

Hi,
we need more support for this project if at least fix the problems that A03 has and leave it like that.
I see this pretty much as a dead project.
If you have issues with tis rom or the others, I would downgrade to one of the roms dell provided.
Sounds to me that maglite is no longer a source for development and no one else has stepped up other than the 0MB pagepool rom that was posted in another thread.
This sounds negative but no one was promised unlimited time to get these roms 100% flawless and even the best stuff from Dell had flaws too and the support there sucked.
I think this is where people decide if the current roms work for them or, if they do not, then it is time to downgrade.
Me, I'm good with the rom I have installed and plan to, even with the flaws, stick with it.
No sense in complaining about no support for you were never promised it at any time.
Now, if someone does step up and continue things, great, but I have to say that it looks unlikely.

Looking to see if anyone knows how to fix this. I love the AO3 and the only problems I have had are with the battery. Let me explain it a little better than in my other post. I have three batteries, Label A,B,and C. Batteries A,B, and C are fully charged through the PDA and the cradle charger. I have Battery A in the pda and while listening to music or watching a movie I drain battery A down to 10%. I change out the battery with battery B. I get a memory error, I dont know why but it only happens when i change the battery it doesn't seem to switch to internal power?. Anyway after the reset it comes up giving me the battery low alert and showing battery B at 10%, but i know its fully charged as it just came off the charger. I take Battery B out, and dont charge it, and put Battery A back in and fully charge it in the pda on the cradle. After letting it fully charge I put battery B back in, remember i didn't charge it, and it reads 100%? I am partially confused. It looks like i can only use one battery and thats the only Gripe i have. Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this? or point me in the direction of getting the tools i need to look/edit the rom, I dont want to downgrade to WM5.
Thanks in advance for anyones help!!!!

I am using the A02 (16.09.07) build on my x50v. Everything seems great except this:
1. When I use the Wifi button to switch it on, it turns on bluetooth instead.
2. Wifi works perfect when I use the Dell Utility to turn it on, but subsequently when I turn it off, it goes into some sort of a limbo state. While in the Limbo state, the CPU utilization is at a constant 100%., slowing down the device to a crawl. Nothing seems to get rid of it, even rebooting the device does not help. I see the Wifi icon on the task bar without the horizontal arrows, not sure what that indicates. In this state, the Dell utility for Wifi thinks Wifi is off, but when I press the button to switch it on, it comes back with no change in the status. Eventually it takes me an hour of switching Wifi, bluetooth on and off, rebooting several time etc. all sorts of random things to eventually get the Wifi truly off.
After its turned off, the system works stable and efficiently.
I tried hard going through pages and pages of this post as well as the previous one with the A02 release, but surprisingly did not find similar problems or solutions to it.
I therefore request anyone who has encountered a similar problem to help me out. I love my device, and I love the release too, but this odd problem is making my life miserable.
Thanks

I have just instaled A03 beta1 and so far, much better than WM5. Better speed, nicer look too!
I also am having problems with the WIFI. When I try to turn it on, it acts like it's turning on, but does't. Sometimes a soft reset fixes it sometimes not.
But one thing for me that fixes it every time, is opening the battery tray.
If I open the battery, the unit goes dark, then I latch it again, the unit comes back on with the usual warning that the battery has been opened, but then the WIFI works likes it should.
Any Ideas why that would be?
Thanks.

Hi,
I have upgraded to WM6.0 A02 rc2 and been using it for the past month. It runs great and fast even when having many applications installed.
I am experiencing 2 problems:
1) Sometimes (often) my cpu runs at 100% for 5 or more mins which slows down system performance big time, then cpu returns to normal after that period.
Even when I don't have any appz running in the background cpu runs at 100%. I used pocket mechanic and memmaid to monitor cpu utilization.
I realized that a process called filesys.exe was the one causing the cpu to run at 100%. This 100% cpu utilization was happening even before installing any applications on my pda (after hard reset). I am thinking that it has something to do with the operation system itself. This sluggishness happens at random.
Is there anyone else experiencing this sluggish behavior due to filesys.exe hogging the cpu to 100%?
2) The second problem I am experiencing is the bluetooth limitations. I can't connect directly from the bluetooth setting utlility like I use to with WM2003se. The A2dp profile works like a charm, but the serial, sync, etc... profiles can't be connected to directly through the BT manager. Also with WM2003se I use to explore the bluetooth profiles of the devices before connecting to them directly form the BT utility.
Would you have any bluetooth utility (stack) that allows me to connect to all the other services of the BT device I want to connect to? Also is there a way to increase my bluetooth profile support?
If ANYONE out there experiencing the same problem, please PM me.
Thanks and regards,
Edmister

the first problem you mentionned is the known filesys-prolem (which also existed in WM5 aswell). It's still not fully fixed, but it also depends on, how many programs you installed on internal ram/storage. (as far as i experienced - less programs in ram and storage - less filesys-problems.) except for the active-sync-problem, where filesys is still stealing performance (but it was also in wm5 so). this can make it possible that you sometimes are not able to sync or even connect your x50v to the pc. (but this can e worked around by using bluetooth-sync.
for using bluetooth sync, you have to put you bluetooth-usb-stick in to the FIRST (!!) USB-Port on the MAINBOARD (!!) (otherwise, the active-snc-service may not show up and work). the first USB-port is the top-left on the rear-side of the PC/mainboard. Tested and proved working (including filesync and data-transfer via bluetooth) at Windows Vista Ultimate X64-Version.

I installed XM6 A03 Beta1 and have used for a week. Before that I used maglite's XM5 A03.
Overall this XM6 A03 is better. however, there is serious battery leak with it
With 8 hours' standby, battery level reduced by 10~20%.
(I only installed few applications, no today plug-in at all!!)
by comparision, XM5 A02 observed only 2~3% reduction in 8 hours standby.
XM6 A03 seems very bad in terms of battery leak. Any input ?

Hi,
I am a newbie and not a tech guy so please excuse me if this question is ignorant, but I just wanted to know, is it needed to install each version of WM6 rom, or can you go straight to the AO3 Beta once you have done the needed upgrades with WM5?
Thanks for your answer

I seem to have the same problem. It is much more prominent if I fire up wifi (i lose 1% every 20 seconds wifi is running) and then go into standby/sleep. It seems as though battery drain happens (albiet not as fast) with wifi on even in standby/sleep mode. If you disable wifi before standby, the drain isn't so bad, although not nearly long as WM5 A03
Aside from that, I do love WM6 and the snappy response time the X50v has now.

Second, I have 2 Axims (both x50v) and have upgraded sucessfully to WM6.
Since I have no real need for 2, I am giving one to a friend of mine, but first he asked me to downgrade it back to WM2003 SE (the OS that shipped with the device) as WM2003 is the only OS that has the original Bluetooth stacks.
Can someone post a link to a download for the Windows Mobile 2003 SE image that came with Axim x50v. It would be greatly appericeated.

Hi,
I'm trying to install the A03 Beta 1 ROM.
It gets about halfway through the stage "Reading SD card" then it fails with a checksum error.
RAM checksum:0xB4F4EE4D
CRC checksum:0x1309512B
My Axim is currently on the official Dell WM5 ROM (A02)
What could be wrong? Could this be caused by a fault device or bad SD card?
UPDATE: I've tried with two SD cards and both have failed, with a checksum error. So I don't think it's the card at fault.
Thanks!

I have to say first, what a great ROM. The only issue I am having, is when i replace my battery. I think the system isnt recognizing that I am changing the battery. This is what happens:
- Battery becomes low, say 22%.
- I power down, and remove the battery, and put in my spare (fully charged as indicated by the green light on the cradle)
- When I turn the system back on, it asks me if i want to erase all memory, i choose no.
- The system still reports the battery at 22%.
I have fiddled with this numerous times, at different %'s and all sorts of things, and cant seem to figure it out. I think either the system is having a problem telling the two batteries apart because they are both exactly the same battery (dell stock batteries, 1100 mAh)
I tried searching for batteries in the threads, didnt come up with anything. Anyone have any ideas, or try switching batteries before on Mag's WM6?

I did turn off wifi, and stopped any running programs by going to mem tab in settings. Those are the must-do things I always do before turning x50v into stand-by, no matter I use wm2k3se, wm5, or wm6...
I'd say that, though mag's wm6 a03 is good overall, it did hog battery power the most.

Maglite,
I think I discovered some of the wifi drain/lockup issues with the AO3 rom. It would seem that if the device is draining the battery to nothing despite wifi being off, I noticed that if you turn BT on via the BT icon, then trigger a wifi off through the side wifi button toggle, then turn it back on and then off again via the button, the problem goes away.
When the wifi is stuck on, the LED doesn't blink to indicate that it's on and the wifi icon shows that it's off, however if you go through the Dell wifi comm manager and try to turn it on, it doesn't come on. The above is the only way I know that fixed the problem with the Axim mysterious battery drain during standby.
I hope that helps.

SPB Backups says not to restore images from previous or different OS versions. So I wouldn't. I think its best just to start fresh. I have found a couple tiny issues in A03 too but I think its far better then any other WM I've tried.

It isn't hard to be happy with an OS when you compare it to how bad WM5 was from Dell and then how bad the support was. I have been sooo happy with WM6 that I have never thought of going back to WM5 at all. I couldn't say that about WM5, I went back and forth between WM5 and 2003SE quite a few times:mad: . I am hoping this A03 is stable, since it is a beta I start to be a little concerned.
Well thanks for you input, now I just need to find the time to upgrade it again and then reinstall all of my apps.

hi, I am new to this PDA rom updating thing. I tried updating my x50v yesterday and was able to get the A01 WM5 ROM on (after my x50v also behaved oddly by not turning on for several hours after updating the bootloader, as reported by several people in previous posts).
Today, I am trying to update to the official dell A02 WM5 Rom, but i can't seem to be able to connect my device to the computer anymore. The activesync program won't connect my computer (Windows XP) to my x50v anymore! When I put the x50v onto the cradle, the computer senses it and active sync begins to try to connect, but it never connects and after a while, the computer just says the connection fails. I get a message saying that Activesync could not connect to my windows mobile device.
In WM2003SE, when I put my x50v onto the cradle, activesync tries to connect, then a popup shows up on the PDA asking if i want to connect. However, this no longer happens...nothing shows up on my PDA. However, I notice that the ActiveSync program does turn on in my PDA because it shows up on the switcher bar after i dock my PDA to the cradle.
I've tried soft and hard resetting, uninstalling and reinstalling active sync (version 4.5) but nothing seems to work to get activesync connect my computer to PDA.
EDIT: got it to work by deleting all my firewalls, turning off spam filter, deleting activesync, removing all it's registry entries, and installing an older version of activesync (4.1)

Dell has abandoned us ...
Maglite moved onto another pda.
The great work he provided us was done for his own benefit first and a generous spirit compelled him to share it with us.
The current rom is the last unless there is another person out there to pick up the project.
Dell did not abandon anyone, they simply moved away from a product that was not profitable any longer.
I do not remember dell saying they were going to provide a WM6 rom for us.

Depends I guess. The only time I've had to do a hard reset it usually from software that don't run on WM6. I've noticed it is a touch slower then WM2003, but you gain so much more functionality. If lives were on the line probaly stick to WM2003. If you can afford a hard reset every 3-4 days switch. You can always go back..

Definitly a lot has been done for the X50v that many have said Couldnt be done. Its no supprise that finally its slowed down again.
Hell I would not be supprised if WM7 gets ported onto the X50v mainly because it will be the only old device that has the power to possible run the software minus the multitouch screen, the motion detection, and camera detection.
Other than that if the software uses D3D for all the effects its going to have to compete against the iPhone effects, the Axim is still fully up to the task with a good onboard graphics chip that still has some grunt left in it.
Only time will tell now, but I do continue to enjoy WM6 on my Axim to this day.

Thank you so much for your contribution on the WM6 Rom. I finally flash to 3_beta from WM5_A12. Everything is faster than WM5 right away. Do the filesys patch according the new pid. Install back all programs as in WM5. It is slowing down, but still faster than that was in WM5. I am so glad that I spent the past couple hours on upgradating.
I have one question, hope somebody can give me some answers. In WM5, I did some registry tweak, activesyn fake server and filesys patch to avoid CPU usage. Right now, in WM6, I only did filesys patch. Is this enough? Do I still need registry tweak? Do I still need activesyn fake server? Thank you!

All,
I ran WM2003SE A05 on my x50v till I came across this thread yesterday.
I then upgraded to WM5 A01 then A02.
Then to WM6 A01 then to A03.
I have barely used it for a day.
These are my observations so far.
Battery.
Is definitely getting drained.
It is very visible and since I have the basic battery that the x50v came with I might have some problems.
Switcher Bar.
I could not find the switcher bar.
I am used to closing my apps using the switcher bar and I can't do that now.
I use the memory app to do the same but it is inconvenient.
I cannot program a button to start the memory app.
Media player.
I can't set up a button to do full screen.
There is just toggle that turns the screen on and off.
Full screen shows up in portrait it does not go to landscape automatically.
I am not able to go to landscape manually as well.
Wireless button.
The button turns both bluetooth and WiFi on.
With 2003 i could just turn 1 of them on. Another reason the battery drains.
I searched the thread for some of this but got no results.
I have not read all 60 pages of the thread.
My question.
I wanted WM6 so I could use 8GB maybe even 16GB SDHC card.
For those you have used the previous versions WM6 A02/A01.
Do you find any of the above issues?
Do you think I should downgrade to A02? If so how should I do it?
Will keep you posted on my progress.
Thank You

This is also the only reason I am considering upgrading from WM2003SE to WM6. I have been searching for a patch for WM2003SE, but it looks like it is not possible. I have been looking at the forums here lately, but it looks like the problems with WM6 may not be worth it. With 16GB cards down to $65, SDHC support will make x50v an excellent media player. I would really appreciate your follow up posts on your experience.

I am unable to download from the rapid share site. Are there any mirrors still available (in English) where the ROM files are located? Thanks

I too would love a mirror for the WM6 A02 RTM rom...
Also, quick question -- I am currently running WM5 A01. Can I download A02 from dell's site here? (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R143808&SystemID=PDA_AXIM_X50&os=PPM&osl=en&deviceid=7640&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=1&formatcnt=1&libid=7&fileid=191977)
Will that work to get me up to WM5 A02 so I'll be ready to install WM6 A02RTM when rapidshare comes back up?

For the guy with all the problems that just switched from WM2003 > WM6. It really sounds like 90% of your problems are stemming from being a WM6 noob. Most of the things you mentioned can be done they are just in different places. You just need to tinker around a bit and customize it to your liking.

Hey there, guys. I haven't been answering on this thread for a while, mainly because i'm pretty happy with my device. After all of that testing that we had done in September, i have been using my device a lot for school projects, mp3 player, etc. And yes i'm still running WM6 A02 RTM with 8MB PP, which is great since i hardly experience any filesys problems unlike the 4MB PP. So, i definately recomend trying that pagepool for people who are still frustrated from filesys attacks. I've been ocassionally visiting the forums, through not very interested anymore in constant testing.
This thread is practically dead now, since i know that Maglite has sold his dell axim and, as far as i know, bought an iphone; football as well has sold his device.
The thing is i didn't do a single hard reset since like October until last week. I have been using pointui for about a week until it suddenly crashed my device. After the hard reset, the restore function didn't work, and so i lost all of my data.:(
The reason why i posted was because i want to know more about the A03 beta. I know my device was working great before, but now with all of my data lost i want to know is it worth trying A03. How stable is A03 compared to A02 RTM, even through its a BETA? The thing is its the same aku, but different build which i find kinda awkward. The problem is that i heard somebody say that Dell GPS Navigation System is screwed up in A03 (look back at some posts) unlike A02 RTM, and use that program a lot! Also i will probably have to change the pagepool of A03 to 8MB as well.
So, Is A03 worth it, if you already have A02 RTM?
(Sorry, for such a long explanation: can you guys answer my questions please?)
(This question is for people who tried both ROMs)

Thanks for the answer, however, i prefered if it was a little bit more specific. Here is what i'm looking for:
1)The thing is i need somebody to fully confirm if Dell GPS Navigation System really works as good as on A02 RTM. If it doesn't function properly then there is no point for me to even bother going for A03. I don't want to spend time after that downgrading.
2)How buggy is A03 beta when compared to A02 RTM?
3) Would the pagepool changer which was develped for A02 RTM work with A03 beta? (i think it should).
4) Also somebody mentionaed that battery draines very fast in A03? Is it true?
5) Also, just wondering what were registry tweaks that Maglite mentioned in this release? (if you guys don't really know, then i don't really care; I usually adjust them myself.)
Usually, as i did before, i'll test every release without questioning anybody because i know that this will help Maglite to get rid of all the bugs in the final version. However, since Maglite doesn't make any more ROMs, the word "beta" sounds, like he said, he didn't test everything throughly. A02 RTM is the final version, however. So thats why i'm worrying about the bugs.
But the new built 1933 as some people say is more stable than 1908. So, what should i believe?
So, all that i'm looking for is for somebody to answer those 5 questions above.:) (Sorry, i should have been more specific on my questions last time.)

Hi everyone,
I'm having problems pairing a BT-388 GPS from GlobalSat with my Axim X50v running WM6 A02 RC2. When pairing, it asks for a passcode, and the gps starts flashing fast (indicating a connection to the Axim) after I click "next" without entering the passcode, but not if I enter a passcode. If I do not enter a passcode, then it asks me if I should add the device that it identified BT-GPS-311ECB. After I say "yes" it tells me to enter a passcode again, and regardless of what I enter it tells me that the connection to the device could not be made (the "next" button is not active until the passcode gets entered). The device worked fine with WM2003, and the company wesite has a diagnostic utility for WM6 which tells me that they think the device should work with it.
This thread is great - thank you very much for all the work that everyone has put into it.
Any suggestions?
Thank you!

hi, i use dell gps and tomtom. i have widcomm stack installed. i had no problems pairing up the dell gps. the passcode i used was 2003. after setting up tomtom. i just turn it on and it located the dell gps fine. as for registry hacks, i have tweaks and sktools, the only tweak i did was activesync. as for battery drain, i dont have that problem. i think it has more to do w/ the programs installed. i leave the dell off the cradle for 2 to 3 days and it works fine. i only problems i have so far is the dell freezing when you turn it on which is caused by filesys. i moved as much as i can to storage cards. i am quite happy using a03. btw the only other issue i have is wifi, i use wep to solve that problem. i hope this helps.

thanks for quick answer. Dell GPS works? That's all i wanted to hear. By the registry treaks i meant were the changes that Maglite made to the registry as he listed it along with a new black theme on page 1, but that doesn't matter to me anymore. The Dell Axim also always had a problem with WPA, and with the drivers being so outdated on all Dell Axims, it doesn't support WPA2 at all. Once again thanks.:)

With A03 beta i was surprised to see Windows Vista skin, and it looks awsome. But what happened to the sounds when you press start in the top left corner of the today screen??? There were no sounds in A01, but we got them in A02, but now Maglite again removed them? Is this normal, or is this just something wrong with the ROM on my device? And also, by default, in WM6 should there be sounds when you press "start"? Can somebody answer me?

Thank you very much, four zeros did the trick. The funny thing is that this bit of information was nowhere to be found on the GPS manufacturer's webpage and in the service manuals I downloaded. I got another question: How can I enable/upload Russian keyboard/letter recognition on my Axim? It displays Russian fine, but I can't figure out how to actually write in it...

Of course, it has been said numerous times in capital bold large red letters that it is for X50V and not X50.
Eh, duh, you saved 10 minutes not browsing before jumping off the cliff, now it will take you much longer to climb back atop.
Since you say you can access the bootloader, you should be able to access the diagnostic mode or whatever it is. someone pointed out how to access it in one of the X50v WM6 thread, I can't find it again though :(
*EDIT* Found it, check this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1437937&postcount=219
You might want to check this one as well (albeit you say you can access the bootloader):

Hi all,
I finally had a chance to upgrade my axim to wm6 a03.
Everything went smooth so far. But the pda refuses to sync with the pc.
it is not even recognized by the pc. I restarted the pc and the pda several times to no avail. I have 2 other devices connected (at other times) to this pc. May this somehow be the problem? Is there a general activesync problem in this rom?

I have a pointless question: how come the calculator integrated in the OS (I'm talking about WM6 but maybe it's the same for previous versions?) is so big? It's completely crap (it does the job of a £1 calculator from Poundland) yet MobileCalculator.exe is 457.2KB! Even Pocket Word is smaller (the executable pword.exe is 302.7KB, although Word probably uses some Office shared files).
If I ever hack WM6 (which I'll never do) and need some space, first thing I'll do is get rid of this dang calculator!
*EDIT* I opened it with resource hacker, fearing that the keypad would be a big BMP, but the only graphical resource I could find was the icon. Dum dum dum, the mystery deepens... for me at least.

First, I really like the new ROM. Two days ago I thought my X50v was dead. I had been running WM5 A02 for quite awhile but it had gotten to the point that it wouldn't boot at all, even with a hard reset. I thought maybe the NVRAM may have finally died (it does have NVRAM doesn't it?)
I was researching the new iPAQ 210 when I got a hit for this site (never heard of it before that). It sounded interesting so I clicked. I found lots of good info. When I found this thread and read about the new ROM and the SD ROM loader I thought, "What the hey, my unit's dead anyway!"
Needlesstosay, it's no longer dead. I was able to load beta 3 and was very pleasantly surprised to see how much more responsive it is. I think it's about as much faster than WM5 A02 as WM5 A02 was over A01, and that's saying something.
I, too, have noticed some weirdness with wifi but, just now, I was actually able to get a link to my Buffalo WBR-g54 router using WPA-PSK. This was after doing a bunch of enabling & disabling using both the WLAN Utility and the side button, as well as soft and hard resets (but not going back to 'factory defaults' as it were). The WLAN utility would lock up sometimes & sometimes it wouldn't; the side button would work sometimes and sometimes not. In the end, persistance paid off and it's working, even after a reset. It kinda reminds me of Bluetooth :p which is also working BTW (and a good thing too; I use BT all the time to listen to podcasts on the busride to and from work).
One thing though: I've read posts where people talk about WPA2. I don't even have the option on my X50v, so I don't know where it would be.
I look forward to getting a 4 or 8 GB SD card soon :) :)

BUG REPORT:
Te following symptome occures if you try to switch off your x50v with a running TomTom 6 Navigation and an established BT Connection to a gps device:
- Display is shutting down (like it should)
- The BT LED doesn't stop blinking
- You can't switch on the pda without perfoming a soft reset
But beside that this is an awesome release - I like the performance, exspecially in comparioson with the last WM2005 releases, thanks a lot!!!
I had the same problem when I connected GPS "QSTARZ BT-Q818". I want to make soft rest.
Now, I am using WM6 A02 RTM

I just wanted to thank everyone who has provided all the ROM, testing and hard work put into making this possible on the Dell Axim. I have installed the AO3 Beta rom and am currently running it on my x50v and I must say that it is incredible. I tried the WM5 upgrade and it was horrible even after tweaking all the suggested registry quirks. I am happy to report that so far the ao3 rom is working good. I have had some trouble with the Messenger program as it just won't launch, however i have gotten around that by downloading a messenger app that lets me monitor other messengers as well as MSN. The office software syncs perfectly and my wireless works great. I noticed that the Processor was running exclusively at 624 and that this was causing much of the battery drain, however after changing the processor settings from auto to power saving and them back to auto the processor scaled on its own and the battery issue has gone away. I downloaded the cab files for Windows Live, PIM back up, and for the transcriber and the all work great. I have downloaded a free app called Magic Button and it actually closes programs and doesn't keep them in memory. Thanks again you have given my X50v new life and I really am enjoy all the perks.

Guys, i made a mistake and forgot to upgrade, as recommended by the first post...
Attention! If you have Windows Mobile 2003SE ROM on your device, FIRST, please download THIS ARCHIVE (RAR 32.4 MB), and update your PDA to A01 Windows Mobile 5 ROM.
After that, please download official WM5 A02 ROM and update your PDA to WM5 A02 ROM.
Now i can't even turn it on... any guess on what to do? I tried reset, reload an old ROM, but nothing works. It does not even turn on.
Can someone help me? Cause i have turned it to a useless brick.

hi
I have been using the wm6 a02 rtm for a month, and it's going fine so far. Some problems I have are the when i am using programs that are installed to SD card rather than to the internal memory, whenever I turn off and then on the x50v, the programs from the SD card are dropped and suddenly just disappear off the screen. Does anyone else experience this problem?
Also, the 3d graphics doesn't seem to be working. I have actually never tried using the x50v with a 3d game designed for the 3d graphics chip with WM 2003 (I bought the device used..when i got it, i immediately upgraded it to wm6). However, I've been testing out some of the games made for the intel 2700g graphics chip these few days, and none of them work. What I get is some boxes/colors on the top left hand corner....and then some polygonal shaped lines flashing and radiating outwards from the top left hand corner.
The same thing happens in all the 3d games fro the 2700g. Normal games run fine. Has anyone else noticed this?
thanks

I just upgraded to WM6 A03 beta1 from 2003SE, and things are great. I do have three quick questions, though.
1. Can somebody describe what the "filesys" problem is, and how to fix it?
2. Is there any way to get TCPMP to recognize WM6's wmv/wma codecs? Can't I just rename (or duplicate and then rename) the codec files already present? If so, which files, and what should I name them to get TCPMP to use them?
3. Is A03 the latest version of Windows Mobile?
Thanks!

Is there any hope of new upgrades now that MagLite is gone? I mean, is there any impetus for anyone to pick up where he left off?
I would think that it is a very very difficult task to do what he did, correct?

Who said you need some kind of a patch to run TCPMP on WM6? It simply works, and there's no compatibility issues AFAIK. Also, there's no such thing as "GAPI Graphics Accelerator". What you meant is probably "Enhanced GAPI" tweak. It's a software tweak that lets applications which use GAPI to work better because default drivers for axim's GAPI were slow. WM5 and WM6 doesn't use GAPI, so the tweak doesn't work under them.

My car charge not working with A03 beta. LED is ON but it's not really charging.
This is my first time try WM6 on X50V, so not sure if A01/A02 have this issue or not. I remember my HTC smartphone had same issue with earlier WM6, but newer WM6 ROM fixed it.
From the dell axim Manual:
www. d e l l . c o m | s u p p o r t . d e l l . c o m
USB Charging
You can charge your device battery when the cradle with the device is
connected to a computer by a USB cable, and the computer is plugged into
an electrical outlet and turned on.
NOTE: USB charging will not take place if the device is turned on.
You can charge the battery using a 5V/500mA USB port when the device is
turned off.
If you check the output on your car charger see if it is 5V/500mA, mine is. the 110 trransformer in outputting 5.4V/2410mA giving the extra "boost" of power to operate the device and charge the battery also.
try a try a 110V power inverter, and the 110V transformer for OTR charging.
Best of Luck

BLUETOOTH:
With the bluetooth stack built into the rom, I can't use the headset function and some other bluetooth devices. To get more functionality with bluetooth:
Go to the site http://btfix.thcgirls.com and download the lastest widcomm stack and install it. Also, dont forget to put in the registry the flow control and audio quality keys, for a better connection.
BATTERY:
Anyone have trouble when they run out of battery power and when when you put in the new battery, it still thinks the battery level is 0%? Well here's a way I figured out to get your device to boot again:
When you start your device with the new battery, press the button to soft reset. Right after the blue Dell screen with the progression bar, keep pressing the power button to turn off your device until it turns off. Wait a few seconds with your device off, then turn it back on again. The system will probably see the battery level as unknown until you use a bit of the new battery and it is switched off after this time to register the new battery level. But the point is, you can now use a new battery right away without the device turning off after you soft reset, thinking the battery is dead. Although you still do seem to have to soft reset every time you take the battery out of the device. I haven't figured out a way around this yet. Also note, that if you do not turn off your device after the blue dell screen and the battery level is not completely 0% yet before you switched batteries, the device will be stuck thinking that your battery level is whatever is was before you switched batteries until it gets below this %. So if you switched batteries when the battery level is at 33%, it will register the new battery as 33% until it drops below this level.
I hope this post helps someone, as it took me a while to figure it out and I wish I knew how to do it initially.

I saw this website and was wondering, would upgrading the amount of ram in the x50v increase the performance of WM6 running on it?
http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~Dell_Axim_X50v-272~area~upgrades-Dell+Axim+X50v+RAM.htm
It's a bit pricey, $170 for an upgrade to 128M, but I thought maybe it would be worth it to some people if it'll help performance of the x50v.
Or am I completely off base about what this upgrade does? 8*)

it actually changes the amount of ram onboard, not storage. It WILL make it faster, provided you dont end up with the filesys problem by loading too much stuff on internal memory

hi
Has anyone else noticed this?
thanks
Has anyone else experienced this with the A02 RTM Rom? I'm still using WM5 but the speed, or lack of it, is starting to drive me mad. I like the occasional blast with Doom (GLES) and Call of Duty, so won't be upgrading if the 2700g specific games won't work. TIA, and thanks Maglite for all your efforts with WM6.

Hi,
i want to downgrade to WM5 again, cause i have to sell my x50v...
but i need to downgrade from the English WM6 to a GERMAN WM5 ROM !!!
only use the German ROM on the SD-Card doesnt work (no suitable Rom fount)
Has anybody a solution for me ?
i already designed a WM5 A02 German .nb0-File but the Bootloader seem to accept only Filenames with WM6 in it, and if i rename the NB0 AND the CRC-file , it doesnt find the CRC-checksum file again (i think the crc-filename has to be something special for WM6, it doesn´t correspond to the NB0-file )
or has anybody an german WM5 .nb0 file with CRC???

Hello,
I'm new Axim x50v user. I concern upgrading to WM6 A02 RTM
Currently I'm running WM2003 SE, but I have original Dell Upgrade disc with WM 5.0
I'd like to have a possibility of installing new Opera Software, so it's a reason for upgrading, of course new look of the OS is also important. But I've heard that newer os than WM2003SE are much slower, what are your views on it? I tried browsing this Thread but after 20 pages I gave up and decided to ask you directly (sorry if I'm repeating).
Is WPA-PSK working with WM6 A02 RTM MagLite Edition? (there were some posts that it's problematic).
Will DELL BT-309 GPS bluetooth receiver work with WM6?
If I'll update to original Dell WM 5.0, Can I then directly update to WM6 MagLite Ed. Or perhaps it is better not to upgrade to original WM5 and download the files mentioned by MagLite and perform the update directly from WM2003
Thanks for your replies!

Hello Everybody!
It was last September when I upgraded my Dell Axim x50v from W2K3 to WM6 A01 and then I experienced this really annoying issue with the CPU usage almost 100% which turned out to be due to the filesys. So I went back to w2k3...
I would like to ask if the latest version fixes that problem or is it still there?

Hiya, I am hoping to be able to shortly start back where MagLite left off at. I hope to be able to release a super ROM with no errors, and even a kitchen so you can just make your own ROM. Is there anybody that would be interested in this? My only problem is I do not have a device to test anything on, so I would need a pretty large group of beta testers to be regged users at my site when I do start this project. I just figured I'd post this to see if there was any interests....
Well I'm new-ish here, was registered a long time ago with a different account when I owned some different PDA hardware, but today I came into possession of a practically brand new in-the-box x50v and the first thing that came to mind (aside from being amazed at the device itself since I've wanted one for a long time) was "Ok, how do I get WM6 on here..." and that led me back to this forum.
So, lenny, seeing that Maglite (and I'll thank him for his efforts even if I haven't actually put his ROM on my x50v yet, so thanks...) has moved on, if you're serious about putting an effort into the x50v WM6.1 possibility, I'm definitely interested in helping out as a tester in any way I can.
I certainly hope all goes well for the x50v mod community, and I can see this is where it lives... so thanks to one and all.
ps
Heading over to register, lenny, no worries. :D

I've got a friends X50v that has the stock W2k3 A01 ROM on it and want to upgrade to the latest WM6 (A03 I guess). What are the exact directions I have to follow?
w2k3 A01 (presently loaded) -> WM5 (A01) -> WM5 (A02) -> WM6 (A03 beta)??
Is that the correct sequence? Thanks!

I have not been able to get the Dell Navigation software to work with WM6. Gives me sound files are missing or corrupt error message. It paired with the BT-309 with no problem. It may be that this software only works with 2003. I did not try it with WM5. Everything else I used works as before.

edit:
I managed to enter the sd loader at least 3 times more but I think this is related to the battery level being too low.

I put the regular A02 RTM on the x50v the other day, and yes the filesys.exe issues do get tiresome. I then tried the A03 Beta 1 and found it a bit faster, but still with the same issues. I'm not 100% sure (not even 50%, actually) what the pagepool setting is in those ROMs; I know I could find out with some tinkering but...
I found it easier just to try Zeus_Alex's simple modded ROM that sets the pagepool to 0 - it's based on A02 RTM, and I have to say, this x50v is freakin' quick now. I've had it installed for about 2 days or so, and I've found that with a hard reset so I start nice and fresh, and with absolutely no other hacks, tweaks, mods, patches, nothing else done to it this x50v is nearly as fast if not as fast as it was running 2003SE.
I've read hundreds if not thousands of posts related to the 0 pagepool setting, and I totally agree with Zeus_Alex in that this setting - the 0 pagepool - should not have this kind of effect on the x50v, but as myself and caveyman and several others have discovered, using this A02 RTM 0 pagepool modded ROM has effectively solved my x50v gripes. Period.
It's my ROM of choice now, and I hope if MagLite does get the chance to do more development on his A03 Beta 1 ROM that he'll seriously consider AT LEAST giving the 0 pagepool setting a shot, or some testing. The difference between any other setting I've tried (2, 4, 8, even 16 once), and the simple 0 pagepool is absolutely astonishing. I can't explain it, even some of the people that work at Microsoft can't rationally explain it, and some of them even warn against it saying it hurts performance (utter BS, I assure you), but in my own testing it works.
I've tried most every ROM this week that I've been able to track down, everything that MagLite has created, all the original Dell WM5 stuff, tweaks till I'm sick of tweaking, PHM, SKTools, MemMaid, etc etc... and nothing, not one thing has done more for making this x50v useful and fast, quick and snappy again as it should be more than that one ROM - Zeus_Alex's 0 pagepool-modded MagLite A02 RTM ROM.
Give it a shot. What can it hurt, right? I think you might be surprised...
ps
Ok, I'll be honest: the filesys.exe issue is still there, we will never be completely rid of it, but in the 2 days that I've been using this ROM, with several soft resets, loading up a ton of stuff in RAM (not on SD/CF), and constantly watching the CPU usage and CPU speed fluctuations, I've noted only 2-3 filesys.exe compaction hits, and the whole time I was streaming audio from WMP and it never glitched out the stream or dropped the wireless signal so... again, give it a shot people. This looks to be a fine solution to me. It might not be 100% for every single person out there based on what you put on your x50v, but this ROM alone is the best performing one I've found yet.

I've tried the A03 ROM and it works well, but I can't seem to install programs to SD/CF because when I turn off the power and then turn on the power the program quits. What are the symptoms of filesys issue? I use Axim on daily basis, mostly for listening to MP3's and viewing doc's and pdf's on the bus. Of course I use a lot calendar and tasks function. I use also dictionary software.
The problem is that my Axim which runs WM2003SE hangs very often while viewing pdf's (adobe reader 2.0) and sometimes when I use Conduits Pocket Player. There is a software Foxit Reader but it needs WM5 to run, so upgrade would be good in this case, I think...
I've got also a question: does WM6 come with preinstalled PowerPoint aplication? I tried Conduits Pocket Slides on WM2003, but it's rather not good, cause it doesn't support images.

Office Mobile in WM6 (at least that's what I run now) comes with Word, Excel, OneNote, and PowerPoint Mobile. Not sure about specific versions, but that's what I have on this WM6 A02 RTM 0 pagepool ROM.
When the filesys.exe "issue" kicks in, the CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there, sometimes for under a minute, but more often it'll stay at 100% usage for anywhere from 4 to 12 minutes depending on how much work has to be done. It's responsible for file compaction - it's basically the file system driver for the persistent storage that WM5 introduced. I could be wrong on that but I'm pretty sure that's how I understand it.
As I've said before, and going on 5 days now with the 0 pagepool modded ROM, I still only see filesys.exe spikes maybe 1 time each day, for a few minutes, and a lot of the time that's when I'm not even using it and the Axim is on the cradle, or just sitting nearby and I happen to glance over and see TodayWarrior showing 100% CPU usage.
Considering how slow every other ROM I've tried is compared to this one, this is the one I'd recommend above and beyond all the others at this point.

No, that problem is only on the X50(v) series. Thats the main reason as to why the did not fix the problem with them, and instead switched them all over to NAND and called them the X51(v) series.

MagLite doesn't work any longer on the project, maybe due to receiving hard words as yours.
That's weired what you write though cause, I'm using MagLite's WM6.0 on my X50V. I use PDA 5-6h a day from a week (mp3's, powerpoint, Internet, car navigation, PIM, internet radio), no problems with filsesys and system hanged only 2 time (which is a success comparing to WM2003, when it was hanging like a freak). But I have moved cache also to SD and have nothing installed in main memory.

I find it does that to me if I leave wifi enabled and turn off the pda, hitting the wireless button to turn it off then back on seems to resolve it though and I can connect to my WPA-PSK TKIP enabled network.

Hello,
Got another issue with my axim x50v. I'm not quite sure however, whether it is linked with WM6 or not.
So, while I am using cradle it charges independent of its status (on or off).
BUT
When I use charge/sync usb cable it doesn't charge at all (it's not important if it is on or off, it simply doesn't charge - even worse, when it is on it discharge quickly when I plug it in the usb port and PC is on). The same is when I use it with charge/sync cable and Car-to-USB adapter.
Why it is like that? Anybody knows?

Got the same issue, some weeks ago. I couldn't run any program, cause I got the message that something cannot be opened - either the certificate is wrong or something is corrupted. Rebooting didn't helped - I tried it several times. The only solution that helped was hard reset and restoring everything from the backup.

OK. So, I left it for whole night hooked up to the usb port and it didn't charge. The PC was off, but of course in the USB there was still voltage. The axim was also off (it couldn't be on cause battery went down and I didn't took cradle with me), in the morning the light on axim still orange after unhooking it doesn't start, so It didn't charge at all. Any ideas?

Hi All
My PDA was running Windows Mobile SE so i proceeded to flash my PDA with WM5 as per the link
I first tried copying the files as per link and it stated incorrect files so i then changed the files names as per the following post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=322498&page=143
-----------------------------------------------------------------
How to upgrade to wm05 A01 firstly, where i find correctly of those verion below:
For Boot Loader
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
For OS
WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
------------------------------------------------------------------
This worked flashed and they asked me to hard reset. So i hard reset and then nothing works now?
Please can someone tell me how to fix this, as im abit worried that its now broken?

Ok i have sorted the last problem.
The problem i have now is when i am trying to insall the official WM A02 update.
To do this the device needs to be connect to PC. But the problem i have is that when i connect to PC in usb cradle windows cant find the driver required.
It had no probs when 2003 was installed. I have downloaded the latest active syc for my OS and still no joy. Does anyone know how to resolve the prob or can it be updated without having to go thro windows?
By the way i am using windows vista 32bit

IIRC the only way that I could get that part done was to do it via XP and not Vista.
Active Sync is not used now for Vista as it uses Windows Mobile Device Center and, I assume, the upgrade that you are trying to use does not recognise it...???

Hi everyone,
First - thanks a lot for the update! I really appreciate your efforts!
Second - I'm having a problem with the WM6 A02 RTM update. I can't seem to correctly sync with my Vista. It syncs, but I can't seem to select calendar, contacts and tasks. It's not grayed-out, just can't check it. I also can't install any program. It only works when I move .cab files to my Axim.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks!

POSSIBLE BUG:
I'm having problems with the wireless lan. It always says it's off, and you can't switch it on using the button on the side of the Dell or using the button inside WM6. In a strange way the wireless works, you can find networks and connect properly. It seems like a bug, but i'm no expert.
Would appreciate a solution to this! Thanks! :)

Very successfully upgraded all the way to WM6 A03. Downgraded to A02. Took PDA out of charger and had my 45 minute commute to work. Battery was totally drained.
SE2003 stable, but just eh and also a little buggy. WM5 on the x50v was a nightmare as speed was concerned. WM6 wow! But too unstable, got to have the power not be drained. My praises to the genius who ported WM6 to the Dell x50v!
Not sure if I should try to go to A01 or just back to SE2003. Was looking at other PDA's today because WM6 is so cool! But I just can't part with my Dell x50v (speed, screen size and res, and beauty).
When I win the lotto I will sent up a specially fund for the Dell.

Auto turn on is my major concern that it drained the battery when you needed it to run.

I think there is too ways to solve / minimize the issue.
1. For perfect solution, change the File System from 4K to 512 then everything should be better and easier.
2. If the first option is not possible. Either find a way to use SD card to replace the internal flash, or create a cab to put everything (temp/cache/log) and settings into the SD card.

I format SD Card with FAT 32. Load on to that formated SD Card: "Download Dell Axim X50v WM6 A02 RTM ROM". Run the key comands and get "No suitable image found." Happing with AO1, AO2, and AO3 from download site.
Does SD Card need to be formated in FAT 32 or other.
Help. I have update ROM from eBay purchased, Windows Mobile 6 AO1 and have up graded ROM before through DELL. But I am stuck for the moment. Can any one Help?

It is great that more people are willing to continue the contribution on x50v. I will certainly give it a try. BTW, I think "NO x50v (WM6) can live without a SDCard" therefore, it would be nice to have WM6 ROM and SDCARD Image to be released in a pack. So that the ROM itself is the minimum file (to minimize the compaction effect) and all other things should be located in SD. Especially the default Cab installation path / temp path / cache, etc.

Instead of the SD card I use the CF card. I think it is much better because I can still move data or view the camera pictures using the SD. If you install everything on SD you won't be able to take it out. I dont see a better use of the CF given the Axim has Wifi/Bluetooth.

Well.. Some ppl have their cameras using CFs.. Anyway, we can release 2 different rom for user to choose form.. not difficult if we sort everything out.
Another concerns is to compare the read/write/cpu usage of SD/CFs' I/O.

Everyone, let's try to keep this thread as uncluttered as possible!!! :D
I copied this from the original WM6 thread as it seemed to have helped some people there:
Here is the way to get into the SD Image Loader on the first try (as one try is all it should take!). This is meant to supplement MagLite's directions (step 2 through 4):
Step 1) Press and hold the Power Button + WiFi (Hardware) Button
Step 2) While holding those two buttons, QUICKLY PRESS AND RELEASE the Reset Button on the back of your Axim. The "press and release" is for all practical purposes a simple "tap" of the reset button. NO NEED TO HOLD THE RESET BUTTON IN FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME. NO NEED TO PRESS THE RESET BUTTON MULTIPLE TIMES.
Step 3) Continue to hold the Power + WiFi buttons until you see the white screen with a blue "banner" at the top which states the SD Image Loader version
Step 4) Once you see the above screen, release all buttons and the ROM image from your SD card should be listed on the screen
Step 5) Press the Center Button (this is what is referred to as the "Action Button" or "Action Key") on the D-Pad (front directional pad on your Axim) TWICE QUICKLY
Step 6) Sit back and wait for your device to flash with the ROM
Hi there,
I have followed the instruction carefully many time but still no luck.
The screen first come with " SD Image update A00", then i pressed the D-Pad twice quickly, then come with " No suiltable Image found." then come with "Image update faileded. please try it again!".
I have tried many times but all the same happened.
can anyone know what's wrong?
Thanks

My question is this, are these just the ROM updates? Do I need to update the ROM then Install WM5, Update the ROM and install WM6.
Do I need disks for WM5 and WM6 or do the Flash contain that code

All of the versions for WM6 have bugs. Maglite's versions are no longer being developed. Lenny's version is the fastest so far. He is working on a new release that should be even better. It is up to you, but I'm glad I switched.

I just got X50V 4 days ago. I dreamt to have this PDA for a while. The orginal rom is Pocket 2003. I borrowed the WM5 upgrade cd from my consin, successfuly upgraded to WM5 A01. Then I tried to upgrade to WM6, it failed!! Because... I forgot to read the posts and did the home work. After spending hours searching, I realize that I need to upgrade to WM5 A02. I immediately download from Dell's website( Dell has not remove the file yet!!) After A02 update, I try again to upgrade to Megaite's WM6. Waiting time is very scared because I am worried what if failed during falshing the rom. About 30 mintues, X50V boots up!!:) I was so happy....
Caompared with 3 different version Windows PPC, WM5 is way too slow to open any programs especially I installed Chinese/Japanese languages. Megalite's WM6 is amazing fast!! I noticed the rom size is even smaller tham Dell's WM5 A02!!
I am happy to use my X50V as my E-book reader and MP3 player. For MP3, I bought a new 8G SDHC card ( HP) It works well!! I have no problem with it! New target: 16G SDHC card ( I hope X50V will support)
Thanks!! Megalite!! You gave a new life for X50V~!~ So far I don't experience any problem!!

The WM5 A02 ROM for x50v doesn't use any .nb0/.crc files, as it uses Dell's own method for installation over USB. The ROM for A02 is in the IMG format, or at least has the extension .img. I may be wrong, but you should be able to convert the .img to .nb0 and then generate a .crc file and go from there...
How?
1. Convert the .img ROM from the WM5 A02 utility to .nb0 using img2nb0
2. Generate a .crc for the file.
3. Copy the (two) files to device and upgrade.

I flashed my X50v to A02 RTM, but beforehand, tried various ROM-s Including the WM6.1 VOIP version, and Lennish aswell. I like MagLite's RTM best. It fits my needs. But I have a problem with changing batteries. I hawe two standard batteries from DELL. (By the way, I bought my PDA on online auction just recently...) I charged them both, and when the first one went dry is swapped to the other. The problem is, that the device asked If I'd like a hard reset. I hit no... Boots up, but the battery status hasn't changed. Nothing gets it right. Soft reset does not help. The battery status is the same after replacing it wit a fully charged one. Not even putting it back on the cradle solves the case, it starts charging like if it was completely dry.
