Everyone, let's try to keep this thread as uncluttered as possible!!! :D
I copied this from the original WM6 thread as it seemed to have helped some people there:
Here is the way to get into the SD Image Loader on the first try (as one try is all it should take!). This is meant to supplement MagLite's directions (step 2 through 4):
Step 1) Press and hold the Power Button + WiFi (Hardware) Button
Step 2) While holding those two buttons, QUICKLY PRESS AND RELEASE the Reset Button on the back of your Axim. The "press and release" is for all practical purposes a simple "tap" of the reset button. NO NEED TO HOLD THE RESET BUTTON IN FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME. NO NEED TO PRESS THE RESET BUTTON MULTIPLE TIMES.
Step 3) Continue to hold the Power + WiFi buttons until you see the white screen with a blue "banner" at the top which states the SD Image Loader version
Step 4) Once you see the above screen, release all buttons and the ROM image from your SD card should be listed on the screen
Step 5) Press the Center Button (this is what is referred to as the "Action Button" or "Action Key") on the D-Pad (front directional pad on your Axim) TWICE QUICKLY
Step 6) Sit back and wait for your device to flash with the ROM

FYI,
I tried pagepool 4, 6, and 8megs of the A02 RTM rom and it made no difference in the ebook page down scrolling update mentioned in the previous thread (where when scrolling an ebook the first 20% of the screen updates then pauses and then updates the rest).
I'm just gonna stick with the pp 4 version as it is very good.
I hoped that saved some people some time.

Hi :
I'd read all the posts since the first release of this WM6 and I have a question about the activesync. When I sincronice the pda, the activesync programm always stay in memory. Is there any programm to close it automatically when it stops the sincronization?
The filesys problem is a big problem to the user that are using the axim all day, like me. I have too the server patch, but the pda normally once a day I have to softreset it. I read a lot with the prssreader and i use it to put my notes, use the hp48 simulator in my work and read a lot of pdf files because I do not want to wear all the papers to my home. For me the axim is very important in my life and it is with me since 3 years with 3 batteries.
Thanks to MagLite to all his work

ALL Windows Mobile programs stay in memory.
Calendar, Contacts, Calculator..... everything.
You can get 3rd-party software that actually closes programs and that will also work on ActiveSync but the OS, out of the box, only closes programs as needed when resources get too low.
Battery Bar, Pocket Plus, WisBar, and a hundred more all have program closing capabilities.

MagLite has recommended that the A02 bootloader be used with the WM6 ROM as that is what he has used in all of his time developing the ROM.

Gadienton, about the ebook page down scrolling, did you have the same problem in the original WM6 A01 Rom?

first of all, I'm really thanks to MagLite from his wm6 rom. anyone having this problem when using "Spb Clone", it come out error message "unable to read from file "\windows\compimeh.0409.dat" because it is blocked by the following processes:"NK.EXE" after the full backup is finish.If I'm not mistaken, it started after wm6 PR2 rom update, even this latest wm6 A02 RTM also. it work fine on previous wm6 PR1 & the A01 rom.

Yes. I flashed the RTM yesterday, reinstalled all my softs and sound were there. This morning, at statup, system hangs, after soft reseting sounds still there but after a couple of minutes disappeared reappeared and then again disappeared. It looks like a task came in conflict with the sound driver... very strange. I installed only Button magic 2.0, TCPMP 0.71 and Resco explorer 5.31 trial.

Hello again,
System is very often locked at 624Mhz in auto mode. utilisation is very slowed down. There is a task consuming ressources (probably filesys or some other). Any link with the sound disappear bug ?
Xdenwarrior
19th September 2007, 07:51 AM
stefano92, I don't really think that there is such fix as for sounds dissapearing as of randomely, but this I quess could happen. I never experienced this bug before (or yet), but I do know that some people even had those problems when running Dell's WM5 A02. So, really it's not a universal bug, and has nothing to do with Maglite's Rom, unless of course it is linked to one specific software that you installed, or everyone is experiencing this bug. (like we did before with an alarm). Try searching in the forums if you can find anything that will help you.
Overall, after all of those betas, it is a very good Rom, which really doesn't have any serious bugs (well, to my opinion). The Rom is actually fast by itself, but the compaction thread is teririble. I find it here worse then it was in WM6 A01. I really think it's due to a small page pool, considering that I run many programs, which requires lots of lines of code.
Now, Maglite, of course, if me being very picky, I would just like to point out a few things, and ask you a few questions (these are very very minor):
1) When you press 'start', then 'help', 'contents', 'manage your time', 'specify the sound for an event', scroll down to press 'adjust the volume for sounds', you will get the following message: Cannot open help. The file cannot be found.
And also when in 'help', 'contents', you press 'start using your device', and press 'what do those icons mean?' you will also get the same message, but the help page will display with some missing icons. I don't think this is a bug, but probably because you changed some icons graphically. Still, I would like others to see if this is a common problem.
2) Also, Maglite, how come when you pick what alarm you want to play, it only gives aside of other sounds, Alarm 2 and Alarm 5? Where is Alarm 1, 3, and 4, which are present in Windows folder?
3) Also, directed more towards microsoft, is there a way by default to use an mp3 song to set it up as a ringtone, instead of just using tbe ones that they give you? I thought they said somewhere that they anounced this feature in WM6.
Of course, I had when I just flashed my device a few glitches with wifi, and at one point I couldn't see any files in my CF card. But this happened before in WM5, and I think it is one time only.
Otherwise, going great so far.
And I think, I finally will start installing back all of my programs since i didn't before because of all of the bugs in the beta roms.
This seems like a finalized version to me.
You did a great job, Maglite.

Aaaaaaaaaaahh. Just kidding. Kunteper, I don't really know. Are you running a high resolution mode? Maybe, like it says. You have too many programs running in the background, or that high resolution itseklf sucks the memory out of your pda. I don't use that high-res, it gave me too many problems far back in WM5.

Xdenwarrior, the size of the pagepool does not have any direct correlation to Filesys.exe (compaction thread). On what basis do you make the assumption that a small pagepool has an effect on Filesys.exe. Most people would tend to agree with this: If you make a statement (technical or otherwise), you better be able to back it up. So, please, explain to me and others why pagepool size directly affects compaction. I would love to learn something new.
Now, Maglite, of course, if me being very picky, I would just like to point out a few things, and ask you a few questions (these are very very minor):
Why does this not surprise me? Yes, you are very picky -- nothing new there.
1) When you press 'start', then 'help', 'contents', 'manage your time', 'specify the sound for an event', scroll down to press 'adjust the volume for sounds', you will get the following message: Cannot open help. The file cannot be found.

Do you honestly need to open "Help" on your Axim? Or, are you just trying to create more extraneous work for MagLite while making yourself look special for finding a "bug" in Help.
2) Also, Maglite, how come when you pick what alarm you want to play, it only gives aside of other sounds, Alarm 2 and Alarm 5? Where is Alarm 1, 3, and 4, which are present in Windows folder?
Again, with the alarm thing...I created a new thread for alarm discussion as there are many users who do not use alarm functions and there is no need to clutter the thread with alarm issues.
3) Also, directed more towards microsoft, is there a way by default to use an mp3 song to set it up as a ringtone, instead of just using tbe ones that they give you? I thought they said somewhere that they anounced this feature in WM6.
Ringtones? Wait, now I'm lost. (:p) I thought this was a thread for Axim X50v. Did we all of the sudden get cell phone capability on our Axims?!?! (:p) Xdenwarrior, why don't you do some reading about the different versions of WM6? After you're done with that, read MagLite's first post in this thread and tell me if it says WM6 Classic or something else. It would be good for you to better understand what you are installing on your Axim. ;)
This seems like a finalized version to me.
Wow, I'm confused again...I thought you just named off several nit-picky issues. Decide what you think about the ROM, Xdenwarrior! If it seems like a finalized version to you, quit posting picky posts. But, either way, make up your mind. ;)

Hello all,
I think that there is a random bug (seems to me as being random) with sounds. I hard reset my device to have a clean system and without any other soft installed, sounds went out after a moment. They came back for a few seconds after an off/ on and desappears again. I had no such issue with WM5 A01 and 02 nor with WM6 releases until the RC2 and the RTM.
I suspect driver to interfere with some other task.
Does someone experienced similar troubles ?

Hi,
I just installed this last night and I have to jump in here and say this is very nice.
I was on 2003SE and went thru the various stages to get here and the installation went very smooth indeed.
I went thru and got the sounds working thru the sounds and notifications and went well, no problems with sounds dropping out.
The processor is also not stuck at full throttle either.
Wireless is working great here also and no issues of losing the connection at all.
Things are working great for me except for the occasional slowdown that is very manageable and not unlike I would get back on 2003SE.
Someone spoke of issues with SPB Clone and having issues with it, I had issues with SPB Backup on 2003SE just a few days ago.
I went to do a backup, this is on 2003SE and the backups I had said they were for a different device than the one I am using and would just freeze the pda at the dell screen.
Not sure what the issues are as I have not run anything new and just last week did a restore and it did the restore fine then.
I have been hearing nice things on Sprite Backup with WM06 so I am going to try this and see if I have better luck.
Have to say thank you as this works great as compared to the WM05 rom which was very nice but caused me enough issues so I stepped back to 2003Se until this update and no plans to step back as this is working great for me.

Thanks Maglite for your excellent work.
Successfully hexedited the nbo file of the A02 rom to give myself a 6MB pagepool which is slightly larger than Maglite's 4MB, as I do tend to run multiple applications at the same time on my axim. I have downloaded all my applications, this time all onto the SD card, as recommended by many axim experts, to keep the filesys ferocity minimised. Filesys wear leveling still kicks in from time to time but it is certainly less frequent, and when it does it lasts for a shorter period of time. So, a definite recommendation to everyone who wants less menace from filesys: please install as many things as possible on your SD card, and keep all write operations to your main storage memory to a minimum.
Apart from a few minor things I am truly pleased with this rom, and it has certainly brought a new life to my pda. With WM6 now fine tuned by Maglite, the X50V lives on. I am truly amazed at how versatile this device has been through the years.

Hello,
I would just tell to everybody who has eratic sound issues, to reflash with the RTM again. This is what I did and sounds came back and stays stable. Appart this issue last night, this RTM release is amazing.
Filesys effects could be neutralised a little with the activesync fake server.
Thanks Maglite for your excellent work.

More importantly, is there going to be an A03? I know Mag doesn't owe us anything and his work thus far has been nothing short of amazing, but I still have the memory error issue (left in standby it will fail to turn on -- or when it does it gives a memory error -- alarms will fail to trigger, and it will drain the battery after a random amount of time -- typically after an hour or two.) I'm going to have to re-flash to PR1, because this problem didn't exist there, and I need my alarms -- not to mention having it drain the battery in standby causes it to be relatively unusable if I take it anywhere without a travel charger and access to an outlet.
I don't know what causes it but it's been there since WM2003, so I suspect it has something to do with filesys triggering while in standby and going into an infinite loop or encountering an error or something, which prevents events from waking the device up. I can't see it being anything I'm running -- I'm only running Wisbar Advance 3, SBSH WeatherPanel, and Chronos Clock. Nothing else has been installed, and they worked fine under PR1 (and possible PR2, though I didn't try that one.)

Ok, cavyman, why were you criticizing my last post? Those 3 questions i brought up as i said are very minor. I don't really care about "cannot open help" error myself, but just wanted to double check if maglite is aware of it, and so that others wouldn't ask about it. My second question is not a bug, i just can't figure out how to enable Alarms 1, 3, 4 to be used also along with Alarm 2, and 5. I can see them in Windows folder, but they not there to pick from in alarm settings. And instead of answering me you are just trying to send me to another thread. And yes, my third question was kind of off topic. Well, actually, I meant 'to use one of my mp3 songs and set it up to use for alarm, not ringtone.' Sorry.
About the pagepool size, everyone has their own opinions.
If you even look at Brighthand.com, solnyshok, says this:
Experience from xda forums tells that PDAs with 64M RAM would benefit from setting PagePool to 8M. Note that Dell x51v already has this, while ipaqs can do twice better. And for PDAs upgraded to 128M RAM, 16M is a reasonable value. Some people set it to 24 and even 32M, since their devices have enough memory anyway. I use PP=16M on my Ipaq and feel that now it feels faster than 2003se at times.
And about the compaction thread, hey that was my hypothesis based on using my device with different PPs as maglite narrowed it down to 4mb (i might be wrong); i never said that it's a fact, but i don't think that the way providers set their device pagepool (for example Dell Axim x51v knowing its architecture) very often to 8mb is just a coincidence!

I am pretty sure that there is a remaining bug with sounds. Yesterday after hard resetting and reinstalling my device, sounds were there and rock stable during hours (click on screen, video with sound on TCPMP etc ...). I left my Dell all night long charging (happy that sounds came back) and this morning sounds went out again.
Sometimes when clicking on the screen I can heard a biginning of a sound immediatly cutted by something (like a short cut). Same in TCPMP where a video starts without sounds and after few seconds, sound appears for 1-2 sec and disappears again.
Is there any possibility that a timeout parameter has influence on that ?
Or the sound driver interfering with another task (IO or IRQ issue?).
Am I the only having this issue which I consider as being major for a multimedia device like the X50V ?

Sound issue closed. Works fine now. I found posts explaining the issue on X51v. It is randow hardware issue with the jack. Nothing to do with WM6.
Regarding the filesys issue, there is a well knows trick called fake server. Maybe a registry hack could set automatically the schedule options of activesync to manual (don't know where, but will chek if it works) avoiding to do the trick manually. Filesys seems to be quieter in such case (don't know why , but it works).
Thanks again to Maglite.

I don't work in Dell, I don't work in Microsoft, I don't have instruments to patch this "bug", I don't know way to patch this "bug"... :mad:

My second question is not a bug, i just can't figure out how to enable Alarms 1, 3, 4 to be used also along with Alarm 2, and 5. I can see them in Windows folder, but they not there to pick from in alarm settings. And instead of answering me you are just trying to send me to another thread.
Alarm issue again...there is a "WM6 Alarm Issues" thread for this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330744
And about the compaction thread, hey that was my hypothesis based on using my device with different PPs as maglite narrowed it down to 4mb (i might be wrong); i never said that it's a fact, but i don't think that the way providers set their device pagepool (for example Dell Axim x51v knowing its architecture) very often to 8mb is just a coincidence!
Then change yours to 8mb and drop the subject. Simple solution - we're all happy now.
For the record, Dell never used an 8mb pagepool for X50v. Dell, in its "let's throw this broken ROM out there" methods, used a 12mb pagepool which has been proven by many Axim users to just be too big for almost all purposes.
However, I hope this will put an end to any more requests for MagLite to put out varying pagepool size ROMs. Everyone here has been given the instructions and links to tools needed to change the pagepool size on their own. I said this a while back and I'll say it again:
If you know what a pagepool is and why changing it could be beneficial to you, then you probably have the technical knowledge needed to make the pagepool change on your own. If you don't understand what a pagepool is, DON'T WORRY WITH CHANGING IT.

Hello all,
I believe that there is an issue with WEP encryption and PEAP certificates. This used to work in WM5 (must have been one of the only things that actually worked on that no so good DELL ROM ;), but I have tried this on every MagLite WM6 releases (from A01 to A02 RTM) to no avail.
I have been following this thread as well as the WM6 A01 thread and I am pretty confident that I have read every single posts within the last month. I _do not_ believe that this issue has been address before, and I sure hope it is not a stupid configuration error on my part.
My company uses an open authentication with WEP encryption and a PEAP certificate. Here is how you configure this:
1. Install the PEAP certificate. Normally called something like bob.cer
2. You can see the certificate in the certificate store under the "root" certificate.
3. Configure your wireless connection like this:
Authentication: "Open"
Encryption: "WEP"
Select the "key is provided for me automatically" check box
Select the "Use IEEE 802.1x network", and select PEAP as the EAP type.
Now, when you click "properties", you get the "Cannot log on... This network requires a personal certificate to positively identify you." error message. And of course, connecting to the network doesn't work.
This is incorrect, as it should allow to select the PEAP certificate (bob.cer).
For the records, I have tested WEP encryption with an hex key, WPA-PSK, no encryption, and all these methods work fine, at my office and at home.
I would like someone else to confirm this as being an issue, as I believe this is the first post on this topic.
I am not too sure on how we can fix this. One possibility is that the application looks in the "personal certificate store" only (which is empty at the moment), and fails to see the PEAP certificate, which is under the root store. A01 release would not allow us to install certificates. A02 fixed that, but I wonder *.cer certificates are installed properly by WM6.
I have of course tried to install a personal certificate from one of my other wifi networks, and I can select it using the method above, but there is no way to get to the actual PEAP certificate to be associated.
My apologies for the novel I wrote. Sometimes, clarity does require more than four lines ;). Even more apologies if this has been posted before. Your comments on this issue are very much welcome. I will continue to investigate...

Hi dcmetrodude.
This has been answered before, but in short, _no you can't_. The built-in SD image loaded is, well, for loading image from the SD card. And no, there is no CF image loader available on the X50v...

hi, to maglite i tip my hat of to you for the great service you and your friends have done for us. you have given us a program that dell had not designed for use w/ the x50v. i would just like to say that not all x50vs are created equal. some problems some people are having may not be due to the program be the x50v processes the info. true the program isn't perfect and in time w/ patience, these problems could be resolved. as for now, you have given us an os that a huge majority of x50v user are very happy with. again, thanks for giving x50v users an early christmas.

Thundermonk, the university I attend has a similar setup. It uses open authentication with WEP encryption and the WEP key is provided automatically. Authentication is via the PEAP protocol. However, my university has made a certificate available for authentication and I have successfully installed the certificate and connected with the network.
That being said, is there any chance the certificate you have is invalid in some way? Perhaps expired or something of that sort?

Cavyman, thanks for your reply.
I am using the same certificate on my laptop using similar settings and it works. That is why I first suspected WM6... The fact that it works at your site makes me wonder if it is in the way the certificate is generated. For this thread record, could you tell me if the certificate issued by your university is issued as a "Personal" certificate (one that bear your name, and used only by you, or a Root one ?
I must currently use a root certificate for PEAP auth, so I wonder if that could be the root of my problem (sorry, bad word game).
Anyway, thanks for your answer. This is really not mission critical, but it would be good to be able to make this work at some point. I will continue to play with this in my free time and will share the results if I find something new.

Thundermonk, the certificate I have installed is a Root certificate. It actually was built for PDA installation for those who use PDAs around the campus. I'm not sure how certificates are built -- perhaps the one I have was specifically for a PDA. At any rate, is there any way you can check with your IT department and see if someone knows how the certificate was built (and more specifically, if it can be used with WM6)?

Cavyman,
I will surely check with my IT departement and go on reading on the many ways a PEAP certificate can be created ;). I suspect that the IT answer will be something like : "I am sorry, this is not on the list of software we currently support..." type of answer. This is understandable, yet sometime a bit frustrating ;)
Thanks for your answers. The fact that it works for you means that I will make it work (eventually).

You're probably right about the answer you'd get from your IT dept. I'm on the IT staff where I work and unfortunately, that is just the only answer you can give at times. :( Kind of a "cop out", I know, but it's hard to make everyone happy all the time. :p
I do have hope for your getting it to work eventually! If it would help in any way, I could send you the certificate I use on my PDA. Just let me know. I wish you luck!

You did make sure they were in the root directory and not in any folder on the card?
This is what I would check and if you have them set up this way, then I recommend just trying the process again.

Hi,
What Filesys problem?
I had a bit of an issue earlier today.
One of my programs installed itself to the ram and the filesys hit hard.
Moved the program to the SD card and created a shortcut to the ram and all is good.
Few quirks to work with, being a new version and all but I am enjoying this lots more than 2003SE

Ok, i finnally got my computer working and was able to install the PSPad, connected my Dell Axim to it through Activesync, and opened the HeX editor mode on it. However, since this is my first time actually trying to change the PP of my device and never used the hex editor before, i'm kind of stuck here. From Brighthand.com it says that i have to use the official upgarde utility, and then quit at the last step, and also i have to convert some files. To me, it looks a lot more complicated now, and i don't want to do something stupid, and brick my device. Right now, the hex editor obviously does not see my device. So, where do i suppose to click on next, and then change those values to make it an 8MB PP???
UPDATE: Actually, i think i know how to do it. It's just that this Brighthand.com is kind of outdated with all of those Dell's official Roms, while i'm running WM6. So, there is no need to convert Dell's .img files to .nb0, since it is already converted. So all i need to do is to install again Maglite's WM6 A02 RTM unto my SD card, and then enter Dell's SD WM5 A02 bootloader, and then instead of pressing twice the central button to flash my device, i should put it in my cradle and sync it with my PC. Then excess that nb0 through my hex editer, and change the last 4 digits from 40 00(4MB PP) to 80 00 (8MB PP). And then reflash my device. Am i correct? Because i don't really know if my Axim can sync with my PC when it is in bootloader mode, and how will i find that folder that contains .nb0 on my PC? Please, somebody confirm who does this stuff all of the time!

Xdenwarrior, you need to open the WM6 .nb0 file on your PC and edit it there. The pagepool is set at SD Image Loader time to the value in the ROM you are flashing with. You DO NOT edit the pagepool in any way through a direct connection to your Axim. Just take the .nb0 file and make the appropriate changes in that file on your PC. After saving the changes to the ROM, put the newly edited .nb0 file onto your SD card over the original (4mb PP version) version if it is already on your SD card. Since you made a change to the ROM, the memory CRC will be different than the CRC from the original 4mb ROM. So, you will need to begin flashing your Axim with the new 8mb ROM. You will receive an error about the memory CRC not matching the file CRC. Take note of what the memory CRC SHOULD be. On your PC, change the value in the .crc file from MagLite to match what your Axim is expecting the memory CRC to be. Now, place the edited .crc file onto your SD card, thus replacing the old .crc file. Do the SD flash process again. If you edited the CRC file correctly, you should see that the memory and file CRC now match and the updated ROM will be written to your memory. After that, you should be quite familiar with the procedures from there.

Just to save some time for common sizes in A02 RTM:
4MB Page Pool CRC: E385DA93
6MB Page Pool CRC: 2B44D0EF
8MB Page Pool CRC: 3C90ED58
I'm using the 4MB PP at the moment and so far it's working quite well. For some reason I had some major problems with memory errors, but I re-flashed last night and so far the alarms have worked fine and there have been no memory errors no matter how long the unit is in standby for. Sweet! I also experienced some hangups from filesys compaction while installing my three main apps to internal storage (Chronos clock, Wisbar Advance 3 with 20 sec. delay on reboot, and SBSH WeatherPanel, as well as the True Connect driver which installs automatically on sync) but once I reset everything's been smooth sailing.
I have noticed that there is still some weirdness with WPA-PSK though. After a reboot one of two things happens:
1. It sees my router but lists it as unavailable and won't connect. If I turn WiFi off and back on again, it seems to connect OK at that point.
2. It can't find my router -- or any WiFi spots in the vicinity (there are usually at least half a dozen from where I sit), even if I rescan through the WLAN utility. Again, I have to turn WiFi off and on before it makes a proper connection.
It's not a huge deal, but there it is anyway.

If you are getting the memory errors after leaving the axim alone not charging for a while, make sure you kill Activesync. I always noticed this with WM05 and on that if you didnt setup the activesync trick and then make sure anytime your not on the cradle that activesync is dead, it will drain the batt and cause the memory errors which are just a anoying way of saying that your batt is dead. I have a backup 2200ma batt and when i toss that in, it soft resets and boots fine once again.

Wow, thanks all of you guys, cavyman, makuu, and mindfield for helpinng me, but i now ran into a liitle problem. Well, first of all, to make it simpler fo me, i was planning to do the following: since i already have Maglite's ROM unpacked and ready to use on my SD (there is 2 files .nb0 and .crc), i decided just to copy them first to My Documents folder on my PC, disconnect my device, and then open those 2 unpacked files on my PC with pspad. The thing is i'm not sure why did you, cavyman, say that i should edit the .nb0 file, then flash the new ROM, and wait until i get an error on my device so i can then change the .CRC number to match the new 8MB PP. Can't i just right away after editing the .nb0 file, go and change .CRC using the number Mindfield gave me above for 8MB PP? And then flash my Axim.
Anyways, that's the question i have after somebody can help me with this little problem. The problem is when i opened Maglite's .nb0 file in hex editer mode, you see long lines of code. So when i entered that line you told me to look for: FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF 9B4F FFFF 64B0 0000 6400 40F4 1B80 0000 4000, the search tool highlighted actually the two lines of code which were very close to it, but there is not a single line that looks exactly like that. In 038F390, it highlighted just the 2 last lines FFFF FFFF, and in the far right section it highlighted some weird-looking lines of code that look a lot like yyyy. Then below in 038F3A0, it highlighted FFFF FFFF 9B4F FFFF 64B0 (then these weren't highlighted 0000 6400 0000), and in this far right corner, it highlited more of those symbols yyyy> Oyyd..d...
I don't see anywhere the 4000 that i can change to 8000 for 8MB PP. I need more help here, guys? :(

There isn't any A05 version of WM5 for X50v. The latest I know is:
A02 - official form Dell
A03 - unofficial from our friend here but very good :)
You must have a X51v unit, please check again and if true, see the X51v thread !

Or, perhaps they're confusing WM2003SE for WM5 since there was an A05 of WM2003SE. :confused: That could explain the "invalid image" problem if they have the WM2003SE bootloader. In any case, it appears that they didn't read the ROM introduction and directions! ;)

That is the correct sequence you need to find. I'm not sure why you're under the impression that it is a "single line". If I gave you the impression that it was a "single line", then I'm terribly sorry. Here's the thing--in HEX there is no real concept of "lines". Lines are something that we as humans, logically, want and need to see in order to make things more readable. Computers don't care. So, I will use the term "sequence" from here on out to avoid confusion with the idea of a "line".
You have the correct sequence, however, PSPad doesn't highlight that entire sequence when you search for it. The sequence spans across "lines" 038F390, 038F3A0, and 038F3B0. The number you need to change is on 038F3B0 in the 0607 octet (look at the column names in PSPad--you will see 0607). In the 0607 octet, the "4" you need to change to an "8" is in the column of the first 0 in 0607. You will see the sequence I mentioned in a previous post between octets 0405 0607. If you look there, you will see the 0000 4000. When you're done editing, those same octets should appear as 0000 8000.
Just for the record, the pagepool sequence offsets have changed between WM5 and WM6 (obviously, the ROM is from a different base). So, any offsets that you might have heard mentioned for WM5 are not necessarily the same as WM6 even though the sequence may still exist in the same form.

Really? That's the reason people don't like having ActiveSync running? Cripes. I'd heard about the server trick and such but I didn't link that to the memory error/drained battery problems I was having. Damn! All this time I could have fixed the problem, too -- thanks for the tip though, now I know what to look for if it does crop back up again.
Minstadave - I use abcTaskMan for task management. It works great and gives you nice configurable views and task sorting options so you can see what's eating memory/CPU time at a glance, look at graphs, etc.

Hello
For me, WM6 is working great, but just for the curiosity, im willing to try 0Mb Pagepool...
Is it the same procedure? What values to replace with?
Anyone tried it already?
Thx
I don't know of anyone who has tried it yet with WM6. Yes, it would be the same procedure I've outlined for Xdenwarrior. Since the current ROM has the value 0000 4000 (for a 4mb PP) and making a the change to 8mb is done by changing the value to 0000 8000, I would assume making the change to 0mb would be setting the values to 0000 0000.
** Keep in mind, if anyone tries the 0mb pagepool, you're doing so at your own risk. I have no idea how your Axim may behave and what effects 0mb PP might have. **
That being said, I am not quite brave enough to try it myself, so naturally I'm curious to hear what happens. Keep us updated if you try it!

I had that exact same problem today as well. The SD card was empty except for the upgrade files. Luckily I have a WM5 upgrade CD, so I could do it the old fashioned way.

The filesys problem seems to still exist pretty heavily. As I speak it's consuming all available resources on my Ax, and has been doing it pretty regularly now after I sync. I have applied the fake server trick already, but that will only help when it is undocked. I don't even have that much installed, but I have a feeling Resco Explorer caused this problem. It seemed to be fine until I installed it with the Today plugin (which seemed to trigger filesys permanently) so I uninstalled just the today plugin, but it's still hitting freqently and it doesn't seem to stop, so it might as well be permanent. I'm going to try uninstalling Resco altogether and seeing if that helps. (Resco isn't installed to internal storage though, while the other 3 programs -- Wisbar, Chronos and SBSH Weather are) If that doesn't help I'm going to hard reset and try installing everything to SD, putting absolutely nothing on internal storage.
EDIT: Removed Resco entirely. Been almost an hour and no filesys. Hopefully that's what has been triggering it for whatever reason, and if so, I think that'll be the end of any Resco products for me.
Anyone have a good suggestion on an alternative file explorer that doesn't cause filesys to kick in like an angry mule?

Hi Mindfield,
I'm a little puzzled by your filesys problems, however, I fully understand your suffering. I have Resco Explorer plus quite a few other applications loaded on the WM6 A02 and I don't see filesys so active at all. One big difference is that this time I listened to the axim experts and loaded all applications including Resco on to the SD card. Filesys still kicks in from time to time but not to the extent you are reporting. One important thing to remember about Resco explorer is that it creates a Recycle Bin directory on your main storage and all files you delete using resco get written to this directory. As you well know any write operation in the main storage awakens the Filesys monster. So I recommend that you disable the Recycle bin in resco and move everything to the SD card. Hope this helps a little. We really need the help of the expert on the aximsite who created the original filesys patch.

I wish I knew what was causing it, too. Filesys is now going again, but I think that has to do with me downloading E-Mail and loading PIE, both of which presumably write everything to internal storage, which naturally causes filesys to kick in. (I think I need a program to move the PIE cache to SD, but I can't for the life of me recall which one.) I'd rather not go through yet another hard reset unless and until Mag does an A03 beta, but I may have to if this problem persists, and then load absolutely everything on SD.
An interesting thing I noticed when searching AximSite for angles on the compaction bug was that WM5 A02 came stock with a 12 meg page pool, which sounded a bit large to me, but sounds like Dell was trying to mitigate the compaction bug by making filesys kick in less frequently.

The difference is that if you select it, the new .CRC file will be generated along with updating the ROM. Probably a good idea unless you want to calculate the CRC via alternate methods.

Great news guys...
Tried the 0Mb Pagepool and its amazing..
Working for 2 days and no slowdowns at all...Strange,but true..
And the best part? Even stranger..eheh... With Wisbar Advance and Wisbar Advance Desktop loaded, i still get some wonderfull 38Mb Ram free...Without Wisbar, i get almost 40Mb's of free Ram.. Great, great...
Its fast as WM2003SE, Has all the memory i can get, very stable and can get various apps open at the same time...
Now i'll try to do some tweaking with the rom and maybe...maybe...rebuild one based on WM6 A02 RTM with a few improvements...That is, if Maglite wont mind....Eheh....
Going to test 2 more days and then begin the work in my available time...

P.S. - Forgot to say one thing...Wisbar Advance 3.0.0.2 and Desktop 1.3.0.7, Resco Explorer 6.15, Weatherpanel, SPB Backup, Netfront 3.4 RP, SKTools, MortPlayer, TCPMP 0.71, Agile Messenger, Pocket Hack Master, Memaid 2.0, XNView, Tweaks2k.Net, Pocket Mechanic, and a few more others, running in Main Storage and still, not much of a hassle with Filesys....Great, eh? Please, no PM's asking how, where or what until i give you some more news on stability ok? I promisse to stay in touch...

Interesting. 0 meg page pool and everything is working fine? Alarms, too? How's the speed overall? Is it comparable to working with a page pool (filesys bug notwithstanding)? Switching between apps works okay? When you say "not much" hassle with filesys, does that mean it pops up but only briefly?
Zeus_Alex
24th September 2007, 01:35 PM
I've never had the alarm problem, so, no help for now. As for speed, well, i think its now comparable to WM2003SE.
Switching apps is great, at least i dont notice slowness at all.
Filesys has atacked once or twice only, but was like, for 10 seconds or so. Thats why i think its much better../

Just curious, how do you all know if a slowdown with your axim is caused by filesys and not it just being slow for some other reason like a user application? Do you immediately run a process viewer to spot if filesys is at 100% cpu usage? Would be nice if there is a homescreen plug-in that shows an indicator icon when filesys is busy compacting...

(ie i can't tap start/close/keyboard whatever) but only the bars are affected - everything in the screen works fine. And sometimes my PDA doesn't react anymore so i have to reset. maybe this has something to do with the cache-size-optimatios/tweaks i did in sktools. (as to be done in wm5)

3.Insert the SD-Card into your Axim and start the SD Image Loader by Pressing Wireless + Power + Reset
4. The Image Loader will search for flash images on your SD-Card, as there is still the Windows Mobile 2003 Bootloader on your device it will only look for files beginning with "DiMa" and therefore will only display the bootloader image.
5. Press the action key twice, this starts the update process. DANGER: If this process fails your device will be a 300$ paperweight...

Ok, now this is strange...
After a reflash, both Axims have 32/33Mb free ram on startup...
But in the end, they are both very good in speed...
Going to stuff apps and games in both, in main storage, and see hows filesys doing...
lol..this is the 8th time i reflash my axim today...
Be right back...
P.S.- From all the PP i tested, this (0Mb) is the most enjoyable one. I tried with 1Mb,4Mb,6Mb,8Mb,12Mb and even 16Mb, and with 0Mb Filesys is the most stable one...
But this is me.I would like to know your feedback..Stufff all in main storage and test please...After the feedback, if its good, ill go ahead and change some stuff in the rom. Thank you.
P.S.1. - Hey Maglite, i hope you dont mind. All the credits go to you, of course. After all, this is your hard work. Maybe some day ill buil one rom from zero, but for now this will do..Cheers!

Greets
Cool. Report back when you've bulked up your internal storage with apps though and see if it gets any worse. I still have filesys attacks with a 4mb PP, though they seem to be less severe and frequent since doing the fake server trick, and my alarms have so far (at least in the past 3 days) have triggered every single time, which is a very good sign -- and no memory errors when turning on from standby, which is also good. If the results of your 0mb PP pan out I might consider creating a 0mb PP ROM and flashing that to try it out. The fewer (and less severe) filesys attacks the better. :)
The free memory thing is weird, though. I had 29 megs free after flashing using the old 8mb PP. With the 4mb PP, I have ... 29 megs free. There must be something in ROM reserving a percentage of free memory or something like that.
well, i actually noticed a bug (i think so). (using the A02/RTM from first post) The upper/lower Bars of the Screen become randomly immune to Screen-Tabs.
This sounds like a filesys attack. When it is executed to compact memory, it can often consume up to 100% of your processor time, making your unit extremely slow or even completely unresponsive. When the attacks on my Axim were at their worst there were a couple of times (while monitoring CPU time in acbTaskMan) where the whole system just seized up, forcing me to reset. The fake server trick in ActiveSync helped mitigate the filesys problems; it still executes but it isn't as severe now, and when undocked I can kill the AS task and it won't execute.
A third party app can allow you to view processes and the resources they are consuming. I use acbTaskMan, which lets me view how much memory and CPU time each process is currently using, and will even graph it out, a bit like Windows XP's task manager. I can't kill tasks from there, though, but Wisbar Advance 3 does feature a task viewer that allows me to kill processes. (I don't think you can't kill filesys when it's running though. I seized the system when I tried. It was probably a bad idea to try anyway -- that's a good way to screw up memory, but I wanted to see if I could.)

Just to let you know...Storage almost full..lol...
Wisbar Advance 3 has, indeed, a process viewer,as you can see in the pic below, but doesn't inform the user of the percentage wich app uses, it only shows the memory that every app uses..
Ok, now to the subject. Filesys is "calm"..smooth...

Watch the pic...eheh...Nice..lol...
And for now, no filesys kicking in hard.I am saving gamestates of games, browsing the net, opening pdf's, etc, etc.,and still, when filesys kicks, its for a few seconds only, but i have no lockups or slow Axim.
Even with Wisbar 3, that used to slow down my X50v, its damn fast and responsive.
As i have said before, it's your turn to test and give some feedback.

I'm kinda busy lately, so i didn't had time to answer back. But yes, cavyman, i found a few minutes after i posted those questions on page 7, where that 0000 4000 line was, and succesfully changed it to 8000 for 8mB PP, and just simply used Mindfiled's CRC for 8mB. So yeah, it actually was pretty easy.
Anyways, my device now functions alot better with 8MB PP, than with 4MB PP. Compaction thread doesn't seem to hit that hard anymore after i even finnally installed all of my programs and put most of them into the main memory. My device seems to be more stable now - no more bumps like really fast, and than really slow due to filesys, but i quess it's different for everyone. (i found Wm6 A01 through very buggy, still more stable than other betas.) Ofcourse, I lost 4mb in RAM, so now i have just over 30MB free after soft reset, but i can still easily play Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, which i couldn't play before with Dell's 12MB PP. The weird thing is that after changing my PP to 8MB, my registry settings went back to the default, or at least i noticed that the font cach size was back to 400 vs 8195 or something like that Maglite changed it too. I actually changed the font cach size to 2000, and the TCP Window Size to about 92193 after, where the original was 32768(according to SKtools this brings maximum stability), and now for a day or two, i didn't experience any more compaction thread.:D
Zeus_Alex it sounds very interesting the way you are using 0MB PP, but i did read somewhere here at xda-developers that this could make your device unstable. Most of the ROMs don't have 0MB PP, but usually between 4MB-8MB. Anyways, i'll see what your results are with it, and maybe i'll try it myself later. Right now i'm really happy with my 8mb PP, and for once it seems like my device is finally in good condition for school after all of this testing that i've done with Maglite's Beta Roms. I'll definately upgrade thou when some major AKU will come out.
I wrote this somewhat in a rush, so you are welcome to comment.

well, now tested some games on my WM6 RTM, and : Tony Hawks 2 works (didn't with WM5 due to Memory, but also worked in WM2003SE.
My PDA randomly hangs. /mostly when syncing. Alarms and Wlan is working, gonna try the battery-lifetime today. (As well as other games,like quake 2, quake 3 and doom gles. Pocket Hexen II still brings whitescreen (based on PocketQuake-Engine, but different exe), Duke Nukem 3d still quits due to low memory.
And btw, i installed the wmp-skin, which i downloaded from first post, but i don't have that skin (shown in first post), i have a different black one, which looks móre like a black wmp9-skin instead of the vista-wmp11-skin.
btw @ Mindfield : i'm gonna think about this, and gonna try this acbTaskMan.

I had same problem -
1.rename
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
to
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
2.rename
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
to
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0.crc
3.Insert the SD-Card into your Axim and start the SD Image Loader by Pressing Wireless + Power + Reset
4. The Image Loader will search for flash images on your SD-Card, as there is still the Windows Mobile 2003 Bootloader on your device it will only look for files beginning with "DiMa" and therefore will only display the bootloader image.
5. Press the action key twice, this starts the update process. DANGER: If this process fails your device will be a 300$ paperweight...
6. After the process is finished (takes only a few seconds) you will be asked to hard reset your system. Ignore this message and press Wireless + Power + Reset again.
7. The Image Loader will search for flash images on your SD-Card, as there is now the Windows Mobile 5 Bootloader on your device it will only look for files beginning with "WM50" and therefore will only display the OS image.
8. Press the action key twice, this starts the update process.

well, i thnik that you have little confused, first file probbably don have extension .crc, but just .nb0, because i dont have two of files same name...
what did you mean by this
"5.DANGER: If this process fails your device will be a 300$ paperweight..."
is it possible to do that, how can process fail, did you make it with success?
after 6 point i just have to reload process again with these same file (DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0,DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_E NG.nb0.crc,WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0,WM50_K_A01_ X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0.crc), don have to rename DiMa_... files to orginal name? should i do what you have written just press Wireless + Power + Reset again?
and btw. what to with other files in dir (WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0)? should i change them also to DiMa_K_... ?

yeah, all you have to know, is what is the action-key (described on first page, post 2 or 3) - put your image on fat32-formatted sd, press 'power+wireless' (wireless is the toggle-button at the side of the pda over record-key) while pressing these 2 buttons, 'pin' yur reset-hole (on the back of the PDA ONCE, (KEEP the other 2 buttons Pressed untill you PDA-Screen turns from black to white with blue bar (called 'SD image loader'. It will search and list the FlashRom-Image on SD-Card. Press the action-key twice (within 3 SECONDS), but a dialog will remember you to do this. (the Action key is the middle-button of your 4-way-navigator/directional-keys. wait for the image to flash (may take time) and after this, do another hard-reset. btw. DiMa_XXX is the file-name for the WM2003-bootloader (needed for flashing from WM2003/SE to WM5, but not here, because the official english Upgrade-Utility (exe) is on page 1/the WM6 A01-thread. any other WM5-language-upgrade-version for A01 is on the seperately Sold WM5-Upgrade-CD from Dell.

Now he see DiMa image (two files, CRC and nb0) but when I press twice action button he says "Image cheksum file not found". I have copyed these files on a empty fresh formated sd card, card is FAT32 formated.

Good job, maglite, and everybody else who helped him.
Odd little problem I've come across--when I go to the microphone applet (Start --> Settings --> System--> Microphone) my title bar disappears, and stays disappeared until I soft reset.
Anybody else get this?
Also, in the Dell wlan program, when it scans for wireless sites, they all show "best" under signal, even when the signal is poor (I don't know if this is specific to WM6 though, or what it's even supposed to show). Anybody have any insight on this?
Thanks.

You might want to try my system monitor tool so that you can always tell when the CPU is stuck at high speed and usage. It doesn't tell which process or thread is using the CPU, but I guess you know which one when the system becomes slow. I'm only using my tool on 2003 but it should work here.

I just loaded the 0Mb PP ROM onto my Axim and got all my programs loaded back on. I agree that it appears to be running faster and has the same level of responsiveness as WM2003SE had for me. However, even before loading anything onto my Axim (I checked immediately after finishing the ROM flash) I found that without any memory cards plugged in, I only had 32mb free RAM and with memory cards, I had between 28mb and 30mb. With the 4Mb PP version, I had 34mb free with all programs closed even after installing all my usual programs. Any ideas what might cause the differences in free RAM?

I really have no idea why is there less memory than with a 4Mb PP... I am rebuilding the rom as i speak and will debug in the PC emulator...
But the most strangest thing is really how my Axim behaves. So fast and smooth and i only have 3Mb free of program space.
I have to play a little more with the rom and test...
Also, i believe that the most stable Rom was the A02 PR2, thats why i will play with that version too and see if theres any diference.
A02 RTM is kind of slugish, but dont know why. I had the 80% block at soft-reset twice today and my battery is going too fast, while in version A02 PR2 that wasn't happening.
As i've said, i will play with both versions and check whats wrong...
I'll stay in touch. In the meantime,who flashed with 0Mb PP, go ahead and give some feedback...

I have been using your A02 RTM for a couple of days and it seems promising. However, I have experienced issues regarding filesys. I tried a couple of the solutions mentioned here such as moving all apps to the SD card. This, by the way, really helped. Furthermore, I initiated the fake server trick and that seems to help too, but I have to try it out a bit more to be certain.
I have one question, though. Can the device now hook up to 54g only routers? The tweak solution on wm5 is not possible since a string lacks in wm6.
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/08/01/enable-wireless-g-80211g-support-in-htc-universal-pocket-pc-phone/
I also checked my TYTN wm6 and there is no string there as well, but this is a 54g device.
So, if I can only can hook up to 11b, is there a solution to tweak it to work on 54g (i.e. 11g)?
I hope it is ok that I posted the last question here since I don't know if this is related to this A02 RTM version.
Thank you, again, MagLite. You have really prolonged the life expectancy of my Axim. I would also thank the other members here for contributing their knowledge and experience. It is not often I find such a dedicated group of people.

Posible FILESYS.EXE Slowdown Patch:
Original thread: http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=222190 written by: Menneisyys
Instructions to recompile and put the file into any device.
1. Download this file: patch_filesys-f3.exe (http://www.winmobiletech.com/052006iPAQhx4700WM5/patch_filesys-f3.exe)
2. Every Device assign a different PID Number for msflash.dll, you need to find it.
For find the PID number you need this application pps (http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/isutils-pps.zip) ; unzip it to any directory on your PC
make sure your Device is cradled and (being) synchronized (that is, ActiveSync is active).
From a CMD command line on PC enter the ‘pps.exe -t >out.txt’ command (without the ‘ marks) in the directory you’ve unzipped isutils-pps.zip to. If out.txt is only 87 bytes long and it only contains the “ERROR: ITGetProcessList - Not enough storage is available to process this command.” message, reset, recradle your PDA and run the test again.
Open out.txt with a notepad and find msflash.dll, In my case, the line is like this:
cfe6cd82 03dc9e68 ff ff 0.0 0.0 msflash.dll cfea5752: filesys.exe
the first 6 bytes of the line are the PID Number for msflash.dll In my case is: CF E6 CD 82 This is the hex number we are looking for.
3. Open the patch_filesys-f3.exe download on step 1 with a Hex Editor (I used UltraEdit)
Find the direction 00000440h and you see something like this:
00000440h: 04 00 A0 E1 30 80 BD E8 82 BD F6 F3 04 E0 2D E5 ;
you need to enter in reverse mode your PID number in this line.
The original file is for PID Number: F3 F6 BD 82 and in the exe file is writen like this: 82 BD F6 F3. Look were it start.
In MY CASE, my PID Number is: CF E6 CD 82 and I needed to write: 82 CD E6 CF
the modified line of patch_filesys-f3.exe is:
00000440h: 04 00 A0 E1 30 80 BD E8 82 CD E6 CF 04 E0 2D E5 ;
Save the file and close the Hex Editor.
3. Copy the file to axim to /WINDOWS/START UP to make the axim to open it every soft reset.
If a pop up start saying: "Filesys thread found Click OK to slow it down" Congrats, you make it!
If says: "Sorry, cannot find filesys: msflash thread!" it's means that PID number is wrong, goto step 2 again.

00000440h: 04 00 A0 E1 30 80 BD E8 82 BD F6 F3 04 E0 2D E5 ;
you need to enter in reverse mode your PID number in this line.
00000440h: 04 00 A0 E1 30 80 BD E8 82 CD E6 CF 04 E0 2D E5 ;
PLEASE TEST IT, AND TELL THE RESULTS!!!!!!!

Nice find, altough i already been there and tried it in my Axim with WM6... For mos users its ok and it works, but for me its not as i wanted it to be. That patch uses an "always on Filesys at 25%"...
As i have said, its ok for must users, but i want a 0% filesys on my Axim. Thats why i'm testing something to work it out for good...
I'll keep in touch.
Note: Nonetheless, its a good find, and an easy one..Cheers..

according to my previous post concerning freezes or high cpu-usage in activsync: i used the registry-hack, (by deleting following keys : http://www.canit.se/~unlogic/regkeys.jpg (from aximsite / http://www.aximsite.com/boards/x50-x51-forums/104366-wm5-here-stay-wm5-tips.html . this caused extreme low performance and even freezes when in cradle with active sync, so keep these reg-keys in wm6.

What is the normal % when filesys don`t work hard? Im going to install something to see, if its less than 25% I will not see anu reason to use it, but when someone has made this, it will be for something, I think. Testing it now...

Filesys only consumes resources when the system tells it to compact main memory. Otherwise it sits quietly at 0%. The problem is the frequency with which the system calls filesys to perform the compaction, and the amount of CPU time filesys consumes when it does.

I seem to be having wireless problems, and I would appreciate if anyone can help me figure out this problem I'm having.
The wireless is very temperamental. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just doesn't. Often the wireless picks up a signal then drop it straight away, and it cycles like this over and over again.
Not sure what's actually wrong... Tried hard resets and wot-not.
The wireless seemed to be fine on it's original OS (WM 2003).
I'm still using the same wireless AP with SSID turned off, MAC Address filtering and WPA-PSK TKIP settings.
Ideas?

Same problem here. I had to go back to previous release prior to RTM. I think it is PR02. It still is a little quirky but not as bad. I have tried WEP and WPA-PSK and had problems with both of them. I was able to get it work sometimes by assigning a static IP but it would not work with the RTM ROM.

Hi,
There is a apparently a conflict between Wifi and activesync. Each time wifi is ON and I dock my PDA, it hangs and creates an issue on the activesync partnership. Need to reboot the pc, delete the patnership, do the same on the PDA, stop wifi and then redock to recreate the partnership.

I've recently taken the plunge and upgraded from 2003SE to WM6 AO2 RTM. All went very smoothly, as I'd taken the trouble to read the various relevant threads.
I'm having an annoying problem with the provided Backup program installed using the CAB.
Before I install this, all is well. After installling - and it will only work when installed to device, not to storage cards - I find that programs are dropped out of memory when the device is switched off. For instance, I can have Mobi reader, TCPMP, and a GPS application all running OK. Switch off, switch on, and maybe one of them will be still running. This is annoying for mobi and gps app, because it will have forgotten screen settings and which map was loaded etc... Problem persists after backup prog is removed, forcing a re-flash to cure. Annoying but not terminal.
Anyone else having problems with backup CAB?

I found the same thing. It will install to an SD card, but it won't run from there. You have to install it (and Transcriber) to Main Memory for them to work. This is on A02 RC2. I haven't taken the plunge to RTM yet as I was waiting to see what shook out with all the PP testing that's been going on.
Now, I can't say if I've seen the auto-exiting program issue or not, but I haven't really looked. I have almost everything installed to SD card with only Backup and Transcriber installed to Main Memory. Even Resco Explorer is installed to SD card and seems to work fine.

I installed everything to SD card, too. I'm wondering if maybe I just need a bigger page pool setting to run these concurrently. Maybe I should try an 8mB PP, using the tools posted.

I know this probably sounds REALLY out of character for me, but instead of trying a bigger pagepool, why don't you look into trying a 0mb pagepool. If you haven't seen it already, there is a (fairly) new thread here for people trying the 0mb PP with WM6 on X50v.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332368
I can't say that I believed the posts about better speed/performance with a 0mb pagepool, but once I tried it out myself, there's no way I can argue with the results. I'm simply amazed by the performance of my Axim now--however, I'm a bit dumbfounded as to why exactly it improves performance. Zeus_Alex has done a LOT of testing and has really taken the lead with the 0mb pagepool and I'm really impressed with his findings.
Though my Axim has what most would consider "less than optimal" free RAM with several programs open, performance is hardly affected at all. With Contacts, Messaging, Windows Live, MS OneNote, File Explorer, and NetFront all open, I have about 8mb free RAM. Performance is still amazing regardless of the free RAM that most of us have been so crazy about obtaining for so long.
I know it all might sound too good to be true, but try it for yourself. If you don't like it, you can always go back to the way it was. But, I am 99% sure anyone who tries the 0mb pagepool won't go back. ;)

Have been following the discussions around the WM6 ROM, and finally took the plunge yesterday. Having read all the relevant threads the upgrade from WM2003SE to WM60 A02 RTM (0 MB PP) went flawlessly. I have to agree that the 0 MB PP really rocks. The speed is the same as it used to be in WM2003. I have all my apps installed to main memory. I'll wait a few weeks before concluding, but my hat off the all you who work on this! Excellent work!!!
Not to get sidetracked here, but I am having some problems managing the Bluetooth GPS settings. Having set it up to Com8, TomTom recognises and uses the GPS signal fine. OziExplorer does not! I am unable to get OziExplorer to see any GPS signal. Have been reading that some apps are not too fond of the way WM5/6 shares the GPS signal (in software). Any ideas?

Ok, maybe I'll give it a try this weekend. Thanks for the reference. I'd started reading the 0mB PP thread, but wasn't sure it would cure my problem, as no-one else seemed to have reported the same symptoms.
Will post outcome next week.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update:
WM6 with 0, 4mb and 8mb page pool all drop progs out when switching back on. WM5 A02 and A03 also do it, but not quite as often. Usual scenario is that I have mobibook and TCPMP and it will drop one or the other. Book file is 629kb, film is 450Mb.
I'll probably go back to 2003SE, and continue to try out successive WM6 releases as and when they come out. It's a shame, 'cos WM6 looks a lot prettier, but 2003 does everything I need anyway.
Can you tell WM6 not to control the GPS automatically? In
Settings -> System ->External GPS
[I'm assuming it's not built in] you can tell WM6 that you want to sort it out yourself.
OK thats normal when you install the bootloader of another version. Because you've installed the bootloader first, I hope. Then you must repeat the steps, but select the WM6 ROM in the list of the SD Image Loader. Try
Edit: If you're sure that you've installed the bootloader, rename DiMa to WM50 and try again, first bootloader then so image.
Edit: Goo work! Happy to read this :)
Hi!
I was testing X50V (MagLite 02 RTM edition), X51V (RTM 03 Football Edition) and Siemens 560N (N560.C550.WM6.Pups.777_Team.0.0.4).
Why is Siemens N560 so much faster (the same processor 624MhZ). I couldn't believe how fast is it compare to both X50V and X51V (They are so leggy).
Can someone explain the cause of that?
Hi,
I got WM6 running today, installed MvRTrueVGA to run true VGA, but my gosh, this caused the text to be so small I was squinting :eek: The PDA became almost unusable. It also caused icons to go missing as well.
I went back to standard mode, which I think is 320x240 :D
How can I customise certain programs to run in true VGA mode? e.g watching movies or viewing photos only?
Cheers,
also, I finally got Wifi to work after a while configuring. Works great.
Here is the only way that worked for me to go to SD image update (each time !!!)
Go into the SD Image Loader by pressing and holding the Wireless and Power buttons on your device and then pressing the stylus into the reset hole on the back of the device. After pressing and releasing the reset button less than 1s keep the Wireless and Power buttons pressed in until you see the SD Image Loader screen appear. It should only take a few seconds after the reset button is released.
Getget, why re-post something that has been posted far too many times already. Your post wasn't even in response to anyone having a problem getting into the SD Image Loader. I already posted detailed instructions on the first page of this thread. Apparently you didn't read that.
I've been really impressed with how this thread hasn't jumped to over 100 pages like the WM6 A01 thread did. A lot of people have been really respectful in that a lot of extraneous posts have not been introduced in this thread. It would be nice if you would follow suit and not simply post something just to say you did. Thank you. :)
As far as this question, again, you haven't been reading MagLite's WM6 threads, have you? This question was already asked in the WM6 A01 thread. A simple search would have revealed that for you. *HINT HINT* In case you're missing my point, SEARCH FIRST, then ask if and ONLY if your searches did not answer your original question.
I have attached a screenshot that MagLite actually posted in the WM6 A01 thread. See if you can find the answer to your question. :rolleyes:
I can't switch on again my Axim 50v.
I Have tried to upgrade it from A02-W2000SE spanish to A02-WM5 english, I have used the following files:
1 -First I have formated and SD card to FAT32
2 -I have loaded the following files to the SD card:
-DiMa_B_A02_X50v_WM50_A02EN_Bootloader.nb0
-DiMa_B_A02_X50v_WM50_A02EN_Bootloader_nb0.crc
-WM50_K_A02_X50v_WM50_EN.nb0
-WM50_K_A02_X50v_WM50_EN_nb0.crc
Ihave loaded the bootloader normally and I have tried to hard reset, it went all black like swiched off. I have tried to hard reset again no way. So is there something I can do to revive it or it is already dead ?
Thanks in advance.
I can't really blame eBay for it; I've seen this sort of thing going for years; anything anyone can think they can make a quick buck on, especially if it involves no investment, there will always be someone trying it. Have a search on people selling emulator CDs -- CDs full of ROMs/disk images along with the (often GPLed) emulators themselves. Better yet, search for "positive feedback." You'll see people selling E-Books purportedly regarding self-improvement, but really they're selling an exchange of positive feedback between users. In other words, if you're new to eBay, you can buy good feedback -- and with eBay now hiding the auctions many people have successfully bid on, it's even harder to find out who's doing it. :mad:
It's the tools that are engaging in this crap though, not so much eBay; they really can't police every auction, so they rely on people like us to report them. Usually they're pretty good when it's a clear violation, such as this one. (Come on; digital delivery of a commercial OS? That screams TOS violation, never mind that this is a hack and technically not very legal in and of itself.) Still, in appreciation for all the work Maglite has done I think reporting auctions like this is the least that can be done. I hate to see people try and pull a profit off of someone else's hard work.
As of the time I reported there were no units sold though, so at least he hasn't made anything yet. As long as ebay.co.uk (where it's listed) responds in a timely fashion, he'll get his warning before he makes any money. Unfortunately that's all he's likely to get; a pulled auction and a wag of the finger, assuming he has no other strikes against him for this sort of thing. If he tries again though then he'll be in for more serious action.
I think a lot of hard work has gone into this upgrade. Well done as it's great to keep my X50v up with the last innovations. Now, has anyone done the WM6 A02 upgrade from WM5 with the aid of Sprite 6.0 and if so could they post the procedure for doing so - assuming this doesn't compromise the upgrade.:confused:
not again with this rom, this is been happening a lot with other roms
on your next release mag you should add your name on one of the start up or setup screens or that this rom is free by you or the xda dev site address.
maybe that will show people that this is free. but will mostly show that its your property and that you released it for free
I've reported all his x50 roms for breach of trademark - eBay will have to take those seriously.
His feedback isn't good - looks like his customers are pretty dim: they can't work the digital download - serves him right!
Let's all keep an eye out for this ROM on ebay for a while. I think we owe it to MagLite to keep reporting this seller (or any seller trying to profit from MagLite's ROM) until this ROM stops showing up in ebay listings. It doesn't take much time at all to report the auctions, so let's all give back a little bit of our time in thanks to MagLite's hard work (and for keeping this free for us)!!! :cool:
Selling a freely available ROM is slime. But lots of people simply can't or won't mess with flashing a new rom. I don't see any problem with selling hardware that's been flashed, or even with selling the service of doing the flashing.
I followed the instructions in this thread. I have A02 installed. I press Wifi + Power and then press Reset. I keep the Wifi + Power pressed until I see the SD Loader screen then I let go. The SD card has the following two files on it:
WM50_K_A02_X50v_WM60_EN.nb0
WM50_K_A02_X50v_WM60_EN.nb0.crc
The loader then tells me:
The upgrade was successful, sort of. It boots fine and runs fine. But when I plug it into the cradle and plug the USB cable in to a Windows Vista computer, the device driver install fails and no partnership is created. I have rebooted the device with no change in behaviour.
Any suggestions?
Hi All,
Am a longtime Palm user and big on pushing PDAs in medicine on my residents in Family Medicine. Am a new Program Director as of a few months ago. I noticed your recent blog on the Dell Axim. The outgoing PD had purchased these for the residents, but they all have Windows Mobile 2003. I now have a Treo 750 (prev 300/600/650/700p/755p) and frankly not a fan of WinMob. I tried to flash my issued Dell Axim last night just for fun (have nothing on it) in hopes of getting to WinMob 6 and helping out my residents as WinmOb 5 is SO slow compared to all the Palms I have used in past! I followed the directions kindly posted on the 1st page of this thread and downloaded Winmob 5.0 ao1 1st, used WinRar on the archive and copied the 4 files onto an SD card (there should be four files, correct?). After inserting and getting to the white screen c the AO1 at the top in blue , I alway get an error "Proper SD image cannot be found". I then hard reset and try again. So far no luck! Any thoughts? This is just the 1st ROM--still have to get AO2 and then the WinMob 6 to take. Sorry a noob when it comes to flashing ROMs on Pocket PC's! Any help would be greatly appreciated. I saw the previous post and attempted to reformat the SD card several times and recopied the 4 files and still no dice.:mad:
Hi,
ArmyDoc, my first thing is, do you have a x50V you are trying to flash?
Make sure this is yes.
Then try again to load the files to your card and reflash.
If you continue to have issues, redownload the files again and try the process again.
These are the steps I wold use to truobleshoot the problem.
If you continue to have problems, please post again and hopefully we can help you.
Hi there
Ditto on those files. Anyway, the loader wouldn't read them from any of the SD cards I've tried ( from camera, MP3 player etc.) so I have restored from Sprite 6 and run FlashFormat with the 32bit format option. I will copy again and try the loader tonight. The one thing I have noticed following the restore to WM5 A02, is that the power off button does not work. When I press it the screen switches off then the X50v powers straight back on again...:mad: Now, this will be a real issue if it still exists after the WM6 A02 upgrade....as anybody experienced this issue?
cheers
Cheers,
Youtube videos will work with Mobile Internet Explorer after installing Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC (free from Adobe), however the videos I've tested were not playing very well... I tried to change the temporary internet files to the SD Card but there was no speed improvement. Looks like the processor is still weak for flash videos.
Yes, you did speak too soon. ;) A lot of times, devices that use SD cards will put hidden files on the card (sometimes written in RAW format which is not visible even as a "hidden" file in Windows). Hidden files are not the only thing that can keep an Axim from seeing legitimate ROM images, but it has been known to give users a hard time when trying to flash. It is always best to work with a freshly formatted SD card when planning to flash a ROM image.
First of all, ArmyDoc, it took me a bit to realize what you were referring to by "WinMob". I can honestly say that I've never heard of Windows Mobile referred to as "WinMob". It sounds like you've read through some of these threads before, so why not stick with the terminology the rest of us are used to? Windows Mobile = WM (WM is a lot shorter than even "WinMob") ;)
As was previously posted by another person, what exact model of Axim do you have? These particular ROMS are only designed to work with an Axim X50v (which is different than even an X50).
Also, in what way are you formatting your SD card? By that I mean, what program are you using to format your SD card and what filesystem are you formatting to it (FAT, FAT32, or NTFS) Axims are picky about the filesystem that is used on storage cards. Typically, if you're formatting using Windows XP or Vista, the default filesystem will be set as NTFS. NTFS will not work with our Axims.
If you have Windows XP, you also have the option of going to the Dell website and downloading the official Dell RUU (RUU = ROM Upgrade Utility) for going from WM2003SE to WM5.
Fill us in with some more details so we can get a better idea of where things are not working out for you. Thanks!
If you mean WM5 A03, the short answer is "Yes". However, I am unaware of an A04 of WM5. As far as I know, there is only an A04 of WM2003SE. If you instead have WM2003SE, then you must go through the process of upgrading to WM5 before you can upgrade to WM6.
Much improved WiFi connectivity and reliability, for one :) It also has many bugs ironed out in the registry and such. It is more responsive overall (as opposed to A01) and has some updated icons. It is especially great if you edit it to have a 0mb pagepool! *hint hint*
If I were you, I would go ahead and upgrade to A02. MagLite worked really hard to improve it over A01 in many areas and I think you'll be happy that you upgraded. :)
but from my x50v system info, I saw ROM version is A04 (05130500).
Another thing is that when I login msn messenger, there's a info "Logon to MSN Messenger Service failed becuase the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." But web browsing is OK. Any body also met this problem. Before this problem occurred, I could use msn messenger well.
There was a broken version of Windows Live/MSN Messenger floating around for a while. Perhaps you have that one? On the first page of this thread, MagLite posted a working Windows Live CAB. Not sure if it works on WM5 though (if you indeed have WM5).
Here is the Windows Live/MSN Messenger CAB that actually works in A02 (courtesy of MagLite). :)
About all your programs, you can back up your PIM data with Sprite, but there were several changes in the registry between A01 and A02, so you don't want to restore any old system files (system data) into A02. It probably would be best just to re-install things from scratch (except for PIM data) as that is what many have done as a precaution.
It has new Wifi and BT icons (ones originally found on AximSite.com) and a few new icons in the Settings menu.
COOL so the windows live messenger works for A02 cause for A01 it just wouldn't work and I ended up uninstalling it. Hi Everyone,
Total nube here and would like some clarification before I go ahead and upgrade.
Currently have the x50v loaded with WM2003 SE v4.21.1088 ROM A05.
I have downloaded the WM5 A01 and A02 ROM as well as WM6 A02 RTM.
To backup my ROM, should I use the built-in WM2003SE backup tool or you guys recommend something like SPB Backup or Clone? or even PIM Backup?
Do I just follow the same steps each time to upgrade to the next ROM?
1) Unpack files from archive into root of FAT32 SD-Card.
2) Insert the SD-Card into your Axim and start the SD Image Loader by Pressing Wireless + Power + Reset
3) The Image Loader will search for flash images on your SD-Card.
4) Press the action key twice, this starts the update process.
5) After the process is finished you will be asked to hard reset your device. Follow this instruction and wait for the OS to load.
My PDA currently doesn't have any apps installed so I just want to ensure that I can revert to WM2003SE if something goes wonky.
Thanks a bunch for your help.
MagLite removed any non-essential components from the A02 ROM since some programs/components can only ever be removed from the base ROM level (the level in which he works on these ROMs). Had he put Windows Live/MSN Messenger in the base WM6 ROM, it could never fully be removed as it would not appear in the remove programs list. However, because he pulled those out of the base ROM and made them into CABs, they can be installed as any other program would and likewise, they can be removed as any other program can. That way, people who really don't want those programs are not permanently stuck with them wasting their Axim's storage space.
..I think I will just start from scratch..So this time the WI-Fi actually works..I had heard that there were issues with A01..
That sounds like a good idea! Yes, the WiFi is working very well now. There were many WiFi issues in A01, but almost all have been resolved in A02. Plus, A02 connects to WiFi faster than it does in A01. There is also the ability in A02, now, to install certificates. So if you ever need to connect to a WiFi network which requires a certificate for authentication, you can now install the needed certificate, which you could not do in A01.
Also is A02 the final version..would be kinda crazy to keep on restoring again and again..I presume there are always things that need to be fixed just like any operating system. Thanks again for the info
I realize it's not always the most fun thing in the world to keep installing the same programs and getting them configured time after time. But, you have to keep in mind that a lot of us here are Axim hobbyists, in a sense, and continually making changes to ROMs is something some of us really enjoy. I personally enjoy making changes to the pagepool, for instance, and installing a ROM several times again and again within a week or two is not something I particularly mind doing. But, that being said, I *think* the A02 RTM ROM is probably going to stick around for a while as it is and quite honestly, if you install it and like it and it does everything YOU need it to do, keep it! :) If you find something you like and it does what you need, it's fine to not keep up to date with the very latest releases. That's up to you. ;) The term, RTM, typically is a label to show that something is ready to manufacture--in other words, "It's a good release and we'll stick with it."
Good questions, though! I hope that answered most of them! :cool:
I'm very glad you like it! I figured you probably would find it to be much better! ;)
About the Windows Live CAB, there's no need to extract the CAB. Just put the CAB on a storage card or copy it to your Axim and click on it there. A PPC CAB file is essentially the same as a Windows MSI file. It's simply an installer for Windows Mobile.
The 0mb pagepool has really stumped some of us because it, in the opinion of many people who have tried it, seems to be much more responsive and tends to have much less of the Filesys issue than the original WM6 A02 RTM ROM. I personally am using the 0mb version right now and am so happy with it that I'm sticking with it. My Axim seems even more responsive than with the original A02 ROM--many are finding that to be the case. If you've not already gotten everything installed and configured, you might want to give it a try.
Hello Cavyman,
Thank you for your information, I have looked the post you gave me. May be I am a newer in pda, but I cannot find the answer. For my understanding, it suggests format SD card and then copy all files in SD card again. However, my pda is no any response even I follow the instruction again.
Can you help me and give me some option to reactivite my pda....Many thanks !!
Thanks for the updates on this. It is really very troublesome how selfish some people can be--namely the scum bags who are trying to profit off of MagLite's work.
Perhaps one of the best things we can hope for at this point is for the person who actually purchased a copy to visit here and see that he/she was ripped off. Then, that person actually has some real leverage with ebay in the fact that it is a fraudulant auction. Maybe ebay will take them more seriously. :rolleyes:
Hi there
Before you start I would perform a full activesync to you desktop to ensure your calandar and My Documents is backed up. I would advise you also backup with an older version of a util such as Sprite 4.x as well just to be on the safe side.
Since the difference between WM2003SE and WM5/6 is so great then you are looking a reinstalls of the latest versions of your favourite apps: PI, eWallet etc rather than restoring these apps from a backup although at least you have the data backup now.
Next, I would follow the instructions: found a in the page 1 of this thread:
Attention! If you have Windows Mobile 2003SE ROM on your device, FIRST, please download THIS ARCHIVE (RAR 32.4 MB), and update your PDA to A01 Windows Mobile 5 ROM.
After that, please download official WM5 A02 ROM and update your PDA to WM5 A02 ROM.
Note, In my case I got a WM5 Rom updater (off ebay) run from my pc that did the 2003SE->WM5 A02 rather than SD image loader. I seem to remember this had a backup faclity that would allow you to rollback if you need to
Once, you have WM5 A02 installed then you follow your quoted steps 1-5 in order to go to where I am now which is WM6 A02 Classic.
Finally, I would recommend installing Sprite 6.x once you have done the final upgrade to WM6 and schedule weekly backups to CF/SD or your pc.
Good luck
Daniel
Hi Everyone,
Total nube here and would like some clarification before I go ahead and upgrade.
Currently have the x50v loaded with WM2003 SE v4.21.1088 ROM A05.
I have downloaded the WM5 A01 and A02 ROM as well as WM6 A02 RTM.
To backup my ROM, should I use the built-in WM2003SE backup tool or you guys recommend something like SPB Backup or Clone? or even PIM Backup?
Do I just follow the same steps each time to upgrade to the next ROM?
1) Unpack files from archive into root of FAT32 SD-Card.
2) Insert the SD-Card into your Axim and start the SD Image Loader by Pressing Wireless + Power + Reset
3) The Image Loader will search for flash images on your SD-Card.
4) Press the action key twice, this starts the update process.
5) After the process is finished you will be asked to hard reset your device. Follow this instruction and wait for the OS to load.
My PDA currently doesn't have any apps installed so I just want to ensure that I can revert to WM2003SE if something goes wonky.
Thanks a bunch for your help.
Psyched.
1) My Documents and Personal databases - I have done this and I don't see my old appts and tasks
2) in addtion to the above, the System databases but not windows folder or apps
3) In addition to the above, the registry.
well, i thnik that you have little confused, first file probbably don have extension .crc, but just .nb0, because i dont have two of files same name...
what did you mean by this
"5.DANGER: If this process fails your device will be a 300$ paperweight..."
is it possible to do that, how can process fail, did you make it with success?
after 6 point i just have to reload process again with these same file (DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0,DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_E NG.nb0.crc,WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0,WM50_K_A01_ X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0.crc), don have to rename DiMa_... files to orginal name? should i do what you have written just press Wireless + Power + Reset again?
and btw. what to with other files in dir (WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0)? should i change them also to DiMa_K_... ?
thnx
danijel
Yes quite possible to Brick it.. mine did... Never came back after follow the directions.. Just sits there.. black screen.. When cradles, I head XP chim Hardware, but nothing happens. Anyone know a place that might be able to "fix" or see what Dell might offer.. ( riiight prolly the cost of a new one)
I still have the original Discs, but doubt that will help.
****UPDATE****
Seems reading the various links netted me some results... Did the Rom Boot Button Smash again, and seems to be loading again... but this time I selected the K rom,,, updating now will let you know. I wonder if this happens to most people that had the A05 Rom. If so, I would recommend a link on the main page to point to another post maybe with a FAQ of.. Do you have A05 Rom.. do this, and Watch for this ... Asking a lot for you do so much, I know, Grateful am I tho if this works... (still if it doesn't ;P )
1/4 through K.. will update with status.
This might help, on the pda, there is a program called "internet sharing" I would check there when you connect thru the usb and see if that makes a difference in getting the internet while cradled.
iwrote before about active sync hanging my pda when in cradle and connected/syncing. it seems to be a problem with the filesync. because, if i disable syncing of files, everything works fine and my pda crashes less inin cradle (but still does sometimes crash.)
is there gonna be a fix or workarround in progress to fixthis crash? (as it's the only bug in noticed so far)
All, I have a "new" x50v and I'm trying to perform the upgrade steps to get it from 2003SE to WM6 RTM. I am stuck here (Step 1, OF COURSE!):
"Attention! If you have Windows Mobile 2003SE ROM on your device, FIRST, please download THIS ARCHIVE (RAR 32.4 MB), and update your PDA to A01 Windows Mobile 5 ROM."
I d/led the archive, UnRARed it, and wound up with the following:
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
WM50_K_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
I copied these to a newly-FAT32-formatted 2 GB SD (not SDHC) card, inserted it into the x50v, did the Wireless-Power-Reset trick and was told by the Image Loader:
"No suitable image found", followed by:
"Image update failed. Please try again!"
I've done some searching and the best I can get is that 2003SE needs a boot loader that begins with "DiMa" or something like that, and it won't recognize the "WM50" boot loader. Does this make sense to anyone? Help!
In the meantime I'll do more digging and see if I can find a DiMa boot loader.
I renamed the files:
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
to:
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
when I did the WiFi-Power-Reset trick it found the
DiMa_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
as a valid image, so I hit the Center button twice to load it. OK, then performed a Hard Reset which seemed to do nothing, so I waited a bit and while I was waiting I figured I'd rename the "B" files on the SD back to:
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG.nb0
WM50_B_A01_X50v_WM5_ENG_nb0.crc
so I did and then I put the SD card back in, did the WiFi-Power-Reset trick, and it found 2 valid image files, a "K" one and a "B" one. I picked the K one, hit the center button 2 times, and now it's "Writing Flash". Hopefully I'm on the right track here.
After it completed "Writing Flash", it performed an "Erasing Storage" (note that each of these steps took around 10 minutes, so make sure you've either got a good battery or you're plugged into power).
When the storage erasing was complete, I did a Hard Reset (Power + Reset Button). This time I got the "Dell" logo and a progress bar on the bottom. After the progress bar completed, it sat another minute or so before ActiveSync found the device and I was in.
Settings -> System-> About shows WM5 OS 5.1.70 (Build 14402.1.1.0).
OK, now let's see how the rest goes (upgrade to WM5 A02, and then to WM6 RTM). Hopefully these notes will help someone.
:p
