Guys, I've got a iPaq hx2495 running the PDAviet WM6 (latest release) and I was trying to see if I should upgrade to a x51v or stay with my device. overall, how does football's release work since it doesn't seem much like we're going to see any updates?

DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!!! All ROMs installed must be trailor made to the exact equipment you have. It is not even compatible with X51 which is much much closer.

You seemed to misunderstand his point. I think he meant the device update, selling his current HP and getting an X51v.
@contradude: as far as I'm concerned about PDAs, X51v is far stronger than the hx2495 which has no separate GPU built-in in term of multimedia processing power. Moreover, the X51v has a speedier CPU than hx2495 does. However eventually, it's your decision that matters.

I was just wondering about stability and/or bugginess of this rom in particular... if you guys thought it was pretty solid, I probably would go out and upgrade to it, and let my brother hold on to this one. I brought it back from the dead (cracked screen) but I always wanted an x50v (become x51v after I saw how much rom store it has... how do you fill that? )

shungabubus: thank you for the warning, I've seen people do some crazy stuff before, I'm just hoping that it's not me doing the craziness lol.

Well, the X51v is def one of the best VGA PDAs ATM IMHO. I've been with it for around 2 years and am still very satisfied. Feel no need for another upgrade.

thanks. i'll just keep watching for a while and see if we get a new cook for roms on this device... if so i'll probably get one, otherwise i'll probably go with the upcoming pandora handheld. x51v are still like $200 on ebay... its pretty sad that nothing is rivaling them in the handheld market... <sarcasm> oh boy I can't wait to get my 300 (if you're lucky) mhz ppc phone with a ~2 inch screen that crashes quite a bit. </sarcasm> I have a treo and love it but watching videos on a screen this small is doable but not enjoyable

by no means, I just hadn't seen you in a while. I think your rom kitchen work is really promising. I was just worried that you had gone the way of maglite and I didn't want to sell my hx2495 and buy a device that wasn't being developed for any more (i already own a tapwave zodiac ;) ). its good to see you active, lennysh. I think I will get one soon :) . I have no problems beta testing rom releases for you if you want me to later... sorry if I seemed grouchy but I've been ill

Go the the upgrade to a X51V. After getting the unit to the ROM upgrade to Lennys version of 'footballs' WM6 ROM. I am using Lennys first released ROM and its very stable, fast and contains some nice additional applications to WM6. I would recommend it strongly. Be advised though the installation of Lennys ROM will void any remaining warranty that might be from Dell. If Lennys around, great job again on both of the published ROMs at your site.

I have bought a Dell Axim x51v from ebay, and it works great. I also upgrade it to WM6 A03 (Football) from SD card (followed the direction form Drakey on YouTube) and no problem happens until now.
Just only one problem happens that is my Axim can not recognized the CF card (a Seagate 5Gb CF Type II - ST1 Drive) . I checked every thing on my ppc's card slot, software, etc...
However, this problem still exist and I really don't know how to solve. Might my card is dead? Because I don't have any device use CF card or one CF else to check, I am not sure this is a problem from my card.

Anyone can give me a suggest? I greatly appreciate your answers

Thank you for reading

WM6 overall is better, but one small problem remains with it -- it can really slow down what you are doing. Because every time you turn off the unit to go into standby, it stubbornly refuses to let you get back to what you were doing. Instead it always displays the "Today Screen" instead.

It's the one thing I really miss from WM5 -- when you pushed the power button to turn the unit back on, you instantaneously went right back to what you were doing. The first few dozen times I got delayed in WM6 I didn't mind so much, but now I am using my axe a lot these days. Yes, I know about the alt-tab button and that's nice and I use it, but some programs like pocket informant's to-do list will take a few frustrating seconds before it will switch back after a resume, each and every time. (you get the windows icon waiting cursor, etc...)

Do this like 30 times a day and it really makes you wonder if rolling back to WM5 wouldn't be such a bad idea. Is there any fix for this? I don't believe it's an issue with this rom in particular, because the couple of searches I did seem to indicate it's something going on in WM6. http://snipr.com/todayproblem

Maybe the fix could be relatively quick to do like a registry tweak?

I'd really hate to go back to wm5 over this, but it's really driving me nuts. I hope a fix is at least possible.

That has not been my experience. I consistently open multiple applications working with all (example excel, word, IE, Filemanager) of them and at various times just shut off my unit. Upon turning it on all of the applications are there for me to use in the exact place where I left off with them.

That's good news and bad news then....the good being that it could very well be some application that is fouling things up. The bad being that it may be one I really need or that I might go through a lengthy uninstall or even hard reset procedure to get things right.

Here's the thing though, I remember football's WM6 doing this very shortly after I upgraded. So it was either a fresh install or I didn't have very much installed at all. Which leads me to think: which ROM do you have installed? I upgraded a while back with football's AO3 RTM (with an SP1 pack as well) I see that the latest seems to be done by Lenny, is this the version that you have installed?

Anyway, no matter what I have to do to get WM6 up and running correctly, at least it's good to hear that it isn't something wrong with WM6 in general.

I jus got my refurb replacement x51v from Dell. I was thinking of upgrading to a new ROM. How well/fast does WM6 run on the x51v? The only WM6 devicev i've used is the at&t tilt, and I was not impressed at all. Everything was slow and laggy.

Is this ROM worthwhile? How do I go about installing it? Will switching back to A12 be a problem if I decide to change? Obviously, I'm clueless in this category. Someone help, please.

Go into your Control Panel to the Today applet.
There's a checkbox that instructs the device to automatically return to the today screen after so many hours -- I think the default is 4.
See if this is checked and either play with the hours or uncheck it.

Koalala work is great but it's a translation pack to use over an english Rom.

I have cooked 2 french Roms here (http://www.ppccool.com/index.php?showtopic=7670). A core one and a private one with a lot of extra including TrueVga mode.
My solution for this is posted in the second entry here: http://www.aximsite .com/boards/windows -mobile-6/220276-wm6 -password-will-auto -return-today-screen -power.html
Ok, here are a few thing worth saying in this thread:

1) Having a WM6 device return to the today screen after a resume is a known bug. It only happens when you've password-protected your device. It happens regardless of how long you've set your password timeout to be, or whatever you set your today screen settings to be. The only way to have your WM6 device return to what you were doing instaneously upon pressing the power button from a resume is to not password protect your device. Then suspend/resume happens exactly like WM5.

2) I can confirm Cravaus's workaround listed above does work. (thanks Cravaus) But your mileage may vary, depending on the app you are resuming back to. There still is a delay, sometimes a significant one. It wasn't so bad with some apps I tried, a couple of seconds maybe, but one of the most important to me -- Pocket Informant's todo list -- the delay was just over 10 seconds.

3) If there's anyone still sitting on the fence waiting to upgrade to WM6, don't use this bug as an excuse. WM6 is faster, more stable, wifi connections are more reliable, you can use SDHC cards, etc. The above workaround may work for you if you want to password protect your device and have power-offs and resumes that don't slow you down much.

4) If Lenny or anyone is still developing this ROM, then I think this issue would up there on the list to fix. It's at least some peace of mind knowing your device is always password-protected. I haven't found a decent replacement for locking my device now that I've got that disabled, but there may still be one out there, and the benefits of WM6 still outweigh this one drawback. I've got freeOTFE protecting a lot of private stuff on the SD card so that's some relief.

So maybe WM6 will always have this flaw, but especially with great 8gb SDHC cards now selling for 31 bucks, (and relatively cheap 32gb cards likely not too far down the road) it's still a terrific upgrade and has made my axe a lot more valuable to me.

Actually I still prefer Lennys first ROM release simply because it contains many applications I had previously loaded onto my unit. I have tried both of the otherROM releases on a second X51V that I have. His current release (04) I loaded today and had some issues with Excel not loading at all. Am going to redownload this release and retry it. The second ROM release has all of the first RMOs additional applications removed to conserve memory and so others that do not use these applications are saddled with having them whether they want them or not.

Yes there is a delay. I use PI and I do not get a ten second delay with it my self. I have tried several different switcher utilities and I am not satisfied with any of them yet. I need to write a little mort script for this. It just needs to be a simple revert to last program command. Some switchers get hung up if the last page viewed was the Today Screen. That is an annoyance. I am currently using AltTab, which has a delay built in. I do not like the delay but it is the most relyable. The fastest is HButton where the options are set to no delay. The problem I found with that is it conflicts with Dogfood's RegTweak when Today is the last screen viewed. AltTab does not have this conflict.

A solution hopefully comming soon is the new version of PocketSecure which has many very good security features and the built in password does not need to be activated for it to work.

I normally sync my personal data / contacts with Microsoft Outlook on my desktop.

This is working great, many thanks. A quirk though, any reason for ActiveStink to not want to synchronize? If I reboot the PC it's good for one sync then it won't sync - but it is connected - as Guest.

I tried both ROMS on my spare X51V and desided to stay with the A3 ROM simply because Lenny included several of the applications in his ROM that I use and have installed onto my unit. The A4 ROM is a very nice ROM with a special feature for gaming owners of the X51V to increase the speed of their unit through over-clocking of the CPU. I found it not usefull to increase my unit to the additional speed but others may as indicated by Lenny. Try both of them out and see which works best for you. I did and stayed with the first ROM Lenny give us. In addition another thanks for Lenny, football and others that helped out the X51V user group with the continuation of great ROM released for a unit that was and is (with WM6 ROMS) way ahead of its time. :)

First of all, thanks to football and all those working on this. I just discovered this ROM a week ago. I immediately noticed the tremendous boost in speed and the install went flawlessly.

The only bug I've noticed and I'm wondering if anyone else has had the issue of the screen scrambling at random. Attached is a screenshot of what happens. Sometimes it's the whole screen or as seen in the attachment, parts of it. It doesn't seem to affect performance - programs open, everything seems to work - it just that navigation gets tricky, obviously, and the icons are jacked. A soft reset clears it, but invariably it comes back sooner or later. Not sure if it would be related to any of the programs I installed since they're just sort of the usuals - CorePlayer, SPB, Resco. And like I said, it doesn't seem to affect anything adversely, but if there's a fix that would be nice. Maybe just a hard reset's needed.

Thanks,
MJ

sorry for the newbie question, I've read about all of this, and it didn't seem to complicated thanks to the detailed postings.

I downloaded the rar with the firmware image in them. I put a new fat32 filesystem on my 4GB CF card, I put the two files in the root of that empty filesystem.

I can get to the bootloader - it says "SD Image Update A10_G3" - I had the A12 Rom with WM5.0 installed. But it won't list the files - just sits there...

DiAd_K_AximX51v_WM6_A03EN_nb0.crc
DiAd_K_AximX51v_WM6_A03EN.nb0

I've tried shrinking the fat32 filesystem with fdisk down to < 2gb ( i'm not using windows so maybe my fat32 filesystem is not quite right...).

any thoughts on how to get it to find the files to do the update?

many thanks

DiAd_K_AximX51v_WM6_A03EN_nb0.crc
DiAd_K_AximX51v_WM6_A03EN.nb0

I've tried shrinking the fat32 filesystem with fdisk down to < 2gb ( i'm not using windows so maybe my fat32 filesystem is not quite right...).

any thoughts on how to get it to find the files to do the update?

many thanks
tim

Bootloader says "SD Image Update A10_G3" , it very clear, it's a SD image loader not for CF.

First off I'd like to thank you for all your efforts and on releasing such a great proggie. Also I can't say if this is a bug or not but Device won't read any SD card that I install, I've tried 4 of em so far and no luck. Going to reboot device and hopefully this will fix the issue. Also Wi-Fi works great without the update.

didnt know i had to reinstall everything,- so now theres hours reinstalling.

Found an old 128MB card, that worked.

Thanks,
MJ

I got the exact problem, and end up flash it back to stock rom (A12). I love WM6 but if I have to reset every few minutes just to see what's on the screen then it's really not worth it.

Loaded the latest beta 5 release with out any installation issues. Once installed have tested WiFi, reading CF and SDHC memory cards, reading excel and word files along with TCPMP and backup up applications that was included in ROM upgrade. Would suggest a Hi-Res Removal tool be added as a cab file for those that do not wish a Hi-Res PIE. :)

I have WM6.1, running on my Axim x51v, and TomTom 6. Not slow here, but I did have to load the latest "application off Tom Tom 6" from TomTom site. also had to Download the latest version of Tom Tom Home (1.5 version) this let me get the latest "tomtom6 application cab file". Their tech support suggested this file to be more compatible with the WM6 O/S. I did it and have no complaints here. I also have the xcpuscalar running while using TomTom6, it's set at the 663mHz and it responds very well. I am very pleased with all apps thus far.:D

Where exactly can we find this super ROM kitchen? Can you provide a link? Lenny has been talking of this kitchen for months so it's a good news that he has finally released his kitchen.

When you say Lenny's last Beta is beyond light speed, did you performed some bench comparing Lenny's and Football? If so, could you publish the results? It would be interesting to see the benefit of WM6.1 over WM6

I think WM6.1 ROMs have proven to be very tough to set up in the ROM stage based upon the results posted by all users, not to speak of the great effort by their authors yourself included. I have stayed with your WM6 release which has proven to be a great ROM upgrade and very stable. No. Just follow the on screen instruction and it will complete the setup for you.It set up the pen alignment first then it will show you a running bar for the auto run then will reboot the axim for you finishing the task with new wm screen.

So many people had this issue. Try cleaning the screen and if there was screen cover also if the first try will not work to appeal off the protector and try the setup alignment again and try to be very careful and patient when pressing the stylus pen during the setup.

Hi guys,

Thats my first post and like to thanks the the great job done with X51v ROMs.

I install the 6.1 but had an issue.

I use to connect internet via bluetooth, from notebook pairing with my phone. Now with my "new " Axim x51v i try to do the same, however even after the concections goes fine, right after it disconnect due a lack of a string the i suppose to fill in the proper field (string like + cg01.....").

Withou the string, as i sad, the connections is dropped.

Any one had the this problems or had to fill the string field that doenst exist in 6.1 (or i cant find it??!!).

can i bypass that, and use the my phone as a bluetooth modem for Axim somehow?

Appreciate your help.

Hey Football, I know you're not doing these roms any more, but I just wanted to say thank you, you have really brought the axim back to life for me. I don't know what I'd have done after dell stopped updating otherwise.

Anyway, thanks for everything, it's been really appreciated.

Well first, thanks to everyone who's worked on this, it's a big help in trying to get the most out of a PPC.

That said, I have one question. I followed Drakey83's guide on youtube to upgrading an Axim X51v (my exact model) and used the rapidshare download. I extracted it and wrote it to an SD card, got the PPC into boot mode, but it said that no valid boot images were available (or something to that effect). I hard reset and it's still running WM5 fine, but where did I go wrong?
