View Full Version : My phone's toast, right?

I was trying different roms because I was having wifi problems. I know, I know, it's stupid and dangerous as I found out. I was trying to flash it when it got to about 10% and then had an error. Now whenever I try to turn it on or even get to the bootloader, I just get a gray screen. The only way I can turn off the gray screen is to remove the battery since it doesn't respond to any buttons. Time to ebay it for parts?

Edit: I forgot to mention that it's a T-Mobile SDA.

Most likely your phone is a brick just like mine....grey screen of death.

You can only JTAG now, well. If you manage to JTAG it, we will all salute you.

I have no idea on doing this, but you need to open up your phone to find the flash chip. Then, based on the part number, try to Google it up and see if you know the JTAG point. Then connect the points and flash the bin file in.

Good luck. You might want to consider FCC documents on HTC ST226A for pictures and documentations

Well, it was a fun week that I had the phone. Fortunately, as a grad student, I have an incredibly high salary and can afford to be a total moron with expensive equipment.

I've been in your place. I've had it for just 2 days before I flash a Hurricane ROM and brick it! Thank God I was able to sell it for spare parts, saving a few euros for my next Tornado :). BTW, I'm a post-graduate student with no salary and expensive equipment, too! :p

Dude, before you sell as spare parts. Try to JTAG it first

Wouldn't that need special hardware, though? I mean, finding the chip shouldn't be too bad, but that sounds like I'll need something to connect it to my computer.

You need to make it yourself. Just some pins to serial port. Then I THINK you flash it using teratermpro

Alright. I'll see what I can hook up. I found some guides for making JTAG cables for debricking wrt54g routers, so I'll try and adapt one of them. I'll stop by Radio Shack or something and get the parts I need.

Alright, I was looking up some more things about this JTAG stuff and it looks like I'll need a bootloader image. Does anyone outside of HTC or a service center even have access to that? Do I actually need that?

Okay, I opened up the phone and I learned two very important things:

1. The flash chip is located under a metal plate that I have no idea how to take off and don't plan on trying.

2. When you're putting the chassis screws back in, if you turn the screw too much the head will snap off, leaving you completely unable to reopen the phone.

So, to sum up: I can't get to a flash chip to even attempt a jtag thingamabob and I can't open the phone or even really sell it for parts.

The moral of the story is simple, don't be a complete moron like I was.

Since the phone is a total toast, why dont just try to take off that metal plate? When I browsed through FCC documents on the hardware internat pics, I don't see any metal plates.

Do you consider those IPL and SPL bin files are bootloader image ?

Because of reason number 2. I can't open the phone at all. I guess I could use some force to open up the case. We'll see what happens this weekend.

I have not read anywhere that someone used JTAG to actually fixed the SDA. Maybe you can buy the main board and replace it. I hate how HTC repair shop charges $65 even if they can't fix it. It is like throwing more money into this brick.
