View Full Version : Cool ways to use the GPS in the Kaiser

There are two apps that I have used that I must say make the GPS built into the Kaiser along with its data connectivity pretty cool. Of course, the GPS is a great tool for mapping software such as TomTom, iGuidance, Google Maps, MS Live Search, and others... but the possibilities of GPS in a connected device like the Kaiser can lead to many other great things. Two that I have found useful are Mobile Justice and 3d Tracking. Here is a quick description of what they are.
First, I have installed Mobile Justice which alerts you when a SIM card is changed and will send a text message to a number of your choosing when it is changed... for example it was stolen and a card was sent in. It can also send the current GPS location. In addition, you can send the device a text message with a keyword and request at any time, the current GPS location. You can also put a message on the device screen. I know people often cook this application into ROMs. I hope that someone does this for a future Kaiser kitchen. I learned about the new GPS features here: http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/mobile_justice_sms_your_phone.html
The other app that I have used that is kind of nifty is 3d tracking. It updates your GPS location in near real time to a website that you can use a PC to monitor. The mapping is done using Google maps. Very cool way to keep track of valuables such as your teenagers. ;-)

What other cool uses for the GPS have you found to use with your Kaiser?

I think the latest is the GPS photo functionality that was discovered to be built in. We were talking about this functionality at work but in an actual camera. Little did I know that i would discover this same function active in my TyTn II

I did see that in the forums which just made the camera in the phone that much more useful. Very useful when on hikes or vacationing to take a quick snapshot. Sure, the camera on the phone is not a replacement for a high quality digital camera, but it is convenient and in outdoor light, does a pretty good job. Combined with the GPS tagging, it is fun too. I hope we get to see even more uses for the integrated GPS.

I am using Nokia's smart2go gps software in my Tytn-II and its working gr8, with Nokia's maploader u can download very detailed maps with very good databases particularly for middle-east.

Similar to your Mobile Justice product, here's one I saw the other day. Its kind of like LoJack for your phone:

It You can have your phone let you know where it is if its ever lost.

The company I work for does gps tracking for sports (running, skiing etc). I won't post the link, as i dont want to be seen as advertising.
But its pretty cool to be able to see how fast you ski (57.2mph is my fastest so far).

Here is another tool that has a description with features similar to WIMP (Where Is My Phone) and Mobile Justice. Has anyone heard of it or tested it before? It is called Ultimate Theft Alert and has GPS as an add-on option.

Basic use would be if you wanted to add pictures to a map (google earth i believe supports this) you take a picture and in geomarks your pic.
It is basically done by regedit - you can read more on this in this exact forum (should be on page one or two -- easy for us to say this while the kaiser forum is still fresh)

Some more interesting GPS software: http://www.jgui.net/gps/index.html
Personal observation: There should be a standard for SMS messages whereby the GPS coordinates of the sender can be sent along with text or mms messages. This would be handy for location based services and when chatting with friends.

Hi
There's something definitely wrong with the GPS happening from time to time.
Today, TomTom was off by nearly 1 kilometre using the internal GPS. Using BT GPS everything was fine.
After a restart: the location was spot on again.
It has happened to me 3-4 times now that the GPS is completely off the charts.
Wonder if this could be fixed with a Radio ROM update ..
Can you please explain this function and how it can be used.

Sorry to maybe possible hijack this threat a little. I am also using smart2go. But I can't download any maps to my MicroSD with the Maploader. It always complaint that there is no space in my card (which has 3.7GB free). How were you able to download the maps to your card?
Many thanks in advance!
PS. Never mind. I found out that Smart2Go probably has a problem with storage cards larger than 2GB as if I use smaller MicroSD cards, the Map Loader works fine. So the solution is to run Smart2Go with a blank 2G or smaller card, then copy the files to the 4G MicroSDHC. Then Map Loader works (with a size limit of 1.8G for map data).....

Ok so still having some problems.
As noted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332811
Some programs don't instal for me, WIMP did install however (haven't tested it yet) so my assumption would be some kind of security setting that is on when installing cabs, do you guys turn it off? (i remember there was a way to do this with the Hermes) or do these apps just install out of the box (per se)?
EDIT:
Looks like its some kind of problem when i transfer the file over via activesync to the card. I put it on via straight pc to another card and it installs fine.

GPS is not very accurate to begin with. What you may want to do is GPS data logging and then some software to replay the logs. I think some WM GPS software has data logging capabilities. In the end, you aren't going to be as accurate than physical speed tools that measure revolutions of your tire (typical speedometers)

google maps is cool, but did anyone notice any problems with their GPS after having used google maps?
In particular, I experienced that speed and direction got stuck on several other GPS software, despite that GPS reception is working fine.

I use the GPS Everyday. One to get to my work and work is far away so I use Telenav to tell me if there's traffic ahead and if I can avoid it to go to my work even faster.
I then use Accutracking.com to set a geofence for my wife to know when I left home or when I left work so she can prepare dinner on time. I also use Reperion.com for Google Earth thing as well as the trackme software from this forum for testing purposes. But for 4 years now, I have been using Reperion and it's the best one yet.
I also use TomTom and iNav iGuidance incase there is no data connection to use with Telenav when I travel cross country. TomTom has no street voice prompts while iGuidance do, so it's good to have the latter.
I also use my Photo in the GPS Photo mode so when I take a picture, I upload it to Flickr. Then run a GeoRetagr program to automatically run the GeoTagging so people who see my photos can click on the Map link to see where the location of the photo was taken.
All for fun of course. And from all the tracking software I have tested, the most sensitive one out there out of 10 I tested, has come down to three.
Accutracking.com, Reperion and the Trackme program from this forum.
The rest such as Mologogo, 3D Tracking, TrackMyJourney, CactusLocate, Hyqirl, Vito and other ones I can't think of, are buggy, un-reliable, crash too much, loads too slow and innaccurate.
Of course Accutracking and Reperion has it's best, but I feel Trackme from this forum has come a long way and should give it a try as it could be run from your own server. No selfishness from the programmer Luis Espinosa, which I give a big props too and the community building around it.

And maybe in a couple of weeks, you will be able to upload your own pictures and they will be shown when you click on a pushpin.

I have an idea for an application that will utilize the GPS.
You select for points on a map (aerial) creating a box [ ] and save it as a "location" ex. home, work.
Then the software will check your position at set intervals and if you are within a set "box" it will forward calls to a specified number for that box.
So when your in the office your calls go to the office and the same for home (if you actually own a home phone these days)
Just a thought, it might even exist.

That's fine and dandy for outside workers. But, most of us live and work inside buildings, and even though I can get a pretty good signal inside my house by a window, at work it wouldn't work at all.

It's a complete statistics solution, however the only problem is that it's not very "usable" while playing. It doen't have a finger-friendly interface like other software such, and you just don't have enough time in a game to update everything every hole.
It's very rich and has a lot of things to mangage, but it also lacks a "light" inteface option, for instance if all I want is measure distances, one single page to measure distances using GPS, for 4 shots at a time (for all 4 players you are playing with), for instance with a simple touch of a very large button on the screen.
I mean it's ok with very large screens, but when you're using a smartphone like Kaiser with a 2.8 inch, you simply can't fiddle around with the small buttons the software has.
Also it does not keep track of your psycho/confidence state during the game and with each hole, which would allow you to manage positive thinking, etc. better, a key success factor in Golf.
So far I havn't seen a single Golf GPS software that has both full features, ease of use, and finger-friendly user interface.

required equipment
To use 3dtracking you’ll require a few tools and programs. These are detailed below:
- one of the following hardware devices:
- a PDA that runs on Windows Mobile (any version from 2003 onwards), OR
- a smartphone running on Symbian 60: -- list of supported mobile phones -- Lenovo P930 LG KS10 Nokia 3230 Nokia 3250 Nokia 5500 Sport Nokia 5700 Nokia 6110 Navigator Nokia 6120 Nokia 6121 Nokia 6260 Nokia 6290 Nokia 6600 Nokia 6620 Nokia 6630 Nokia 6670 Nokia 6680 Nokia 6681 Nokia 6682 Nokia 7610 Nokia E50 Nokia E51 Nokia E60 Nokia E61 Nokia E61i Nokia E62 Nokia E65 Nokia E80 Nokia E90 Nokia N70 Nokia N71 Nokia N72 Nokia N73 Nokia N75 Nokia N76 Nokia N77 Nokia N80 Nokia N81 Nokia N82 Nokia N90 Nokia N91 Nokia N92 Nokia N93 Nokia N93i Nokia N95 Panasonic X700 Panasonic X800 Samsung SGH-D720 Samsung SGH-D730 Samsung SGH-i400 Samsung SGH-i520 Samsung SGH-Z600
- a GPS receiver that connects to your mobile device above (it can be either an internal or external GPS receiver).
- an Internet connection for your mobile device (this can be via GPRS, 3G, EDGE, wireless, etc).
Please note that Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6 comes in 2 versions, namely PDA and smartphone. The Windows application that we have developed only works on the PDA, so Windows Mobile smartphones are currently not supported.
