Same happend with mine too... Some where I must have put a pressure on my touch while I had it on my pant pocket... Screen cracked in to pices... Had to spend 100$ to get it changed by HTC... I dont know how to protect, it was inside the pouch which came along with touch...

It does state in HTCs documents with the phone not to keep it in your pocket, but this is the first time I heard of damage as a result!

I have almost had the same things.... the screen cracked but without having any pressure.. I have always the touch in my pocket in the pouch but everything is still working fine there is just a crack in the screen but it looks like a 1cm long scratch .. and if I put a little pressure it's like moving (left part move apart from the right part) but I can't use it normally .. I have been so lucky !
how can we be responsible for having to press hard to use it but the screen is easy broken .... it's really baaaaad !! it's not our fault if they did something conflicting !

ohh I'm so sorry man, because of that I'm still thinking to choose between a HTC Elf or the Kaiser one, I have read some german test about the Elf and other pocket phones and they warned specially about carrying the Elf on your pocket. Anyway the price and the shipping price are OK, but don't you have an authorized distributor for HTC's produtcs in Venezuela? If you do the work by yourself you will loose the warranty.
In Venezuela they will say "que coñazo" :(

i bet this will happen more often w/ touch & touch slider. the screen is even w/ housing unlike other htc pda's which have the screen recessed into housing. just look at all the broken iphone's on ebay already.

I had the same experience. Turned my touch off and placed it on my desk, the next morning there was a tiny crack in the bottom left corner and the entire screen was shining Whit e(like a screen full of dead pixels).
I could still use the PDA on my PC using mymobiler. HKD$500 to get repaired even though I tried to prove that I never dropped it or scratched the screen.
I suspect some of the Touch's have faulty manufacturing, but with screen cracks its impossible to prove that you didn't damage it yourself.

Damn, is there an application/software that can fix that? Just teasing. Seriously though, that's tragic. I believe the more advance devices become, the more sensitive it is. I think way off in the distant future, high tech devices will come with a metal casing or something. I lent my girlfriend, of four years, my unlocked sony ericsson p910i phone. She shattered the lcd by accident by having keys in her pocket. She then asks me, can I fix it, lol.!!!

this looks like a pressure problem. and although im not sure how it may of happened to you folks, but my girlfriends laptop did the exact same thing when we went to tibet.
tibet is so high up that the air pressure is quite low, like half of normal if not less, its really tough to breathe and canned foods almost explode when the pressure gets that low.
Now for you, and i'm just guessing here, but by any chance was it raining the day or the day before your screen broke? i mean low pressure system could of done it if its a really touchy device to begin with. have to remember, these things are made at or near sea level. if you live in high altittude, and a storm comes through it may just be enough to blow it out. I only say this because what i see on your screen and what happened to my girls ibook are nearly identical. Does the black blob move? she had three of them, and they would shift across the screen, not fast enough to watch, but noticeable over the course of a day or so.

i send my touch to HTC today.
i had it for a week and tought of draining the battery completely.
after that done, i charged it for the whole evening and night.
in the morning when i took it of the table it feld a bit warm and in the middle of the screen ther was something like a flame but a bit grey.
after a few days the upper side and down side os the screen where not "solid" anymore. it looked like it was kind of moving.
will let u guys know what the result will be.

The LCD broke on my touch too. Sent it in for repair and they would charge me almost 350€ . So i thought if it is possible to buy a screen from cnn.cn and then replace it on my own.
My main question is: How do i open the touch? Does somebody have a guide or some tips for me (maybe pictures) - anything that helps is highly appreciated.

Klaus

I've had the same after have the touch a week. In the left under corner I had A black spot and the half of the screen was gray just like in the post. Send him and it was a factory problem and fixed free. So If you don't fuckup your cid and other software just send him over

Well i sent it in - and they refused to repair it under warranty. Though there are no scratches and no other signs that i dropped it or anything like that they still claim it's not their fault :( Here in Austria such things are treated by a company called Kapsch and not by HTC - maybe that's why....

Hi,
I've had my Touch (or nova, as it is here called) for only two months and one morning i discovered a black "stain" under the screen, directly where you have the virtual keyboard. O2 refused to repair it under warranty, blaming it on "mechanical fracture", and quoting me 200 euro for a repair. Well, for that money I could almost get another one! But what I find outrageous is, that they blame me for it, even though it shouldn't have broken at that spot. They should have used more durable materials knowing that people will need to apply pressure to the screen, and the pressure is larger than normally due to the fact, that this screen is "hard". And the funny part is, that this "stain" moves under the screen, just as if something spilled inside and the liquid was moving. But the touchscreen functionality stayed intact. Anybody knows a way to deal with it without having to pay big bucks for a screen exchange?

I recently sold my old MDA 11 on Ebay and was looking through the items for sale as you do...and saw screens for the Touch. They came from China, but who cares as long as they fit and do the job...

Oh fuck .. i am another customer with problems in my LCD screen [Touch (Elf)]
This is not normal.. i was sitting in a car with it in my pocket, but without hitting it at all, just with the pressure it got broken ??? JusT ShiT
Now i have sent it to my mobile service centre and will tell me the warranty does not cover it
Cannot we do something at the respect? this looks like a manufacturer problem, too easy to break.. I'll try to make a formal complaint to the consumer centre.
Finally.. if i have to pay 140€ for fixing it in the service centre, i don't know if buying it on ebay or cnn.cn (i'd loose the warranty then )
what do you suggest me to do?
There are LCD's sold with tools and instructions, they are really neccesary? (cnn.cn does not provide them, right?) I think i'll buy over ebay, some china or so..
Any suggestion? Does anyone have some tutorial about replacing the LCD?
I think i just broke LCD, no digitalizer,.. how may i know?
Thank you a lot :o

Ditto! I had my Touch for all of one week. It got dropped into a hot cup of coffee at work(). $50 US and another one is on the way.
It wouldn't startup after being dunked in coffee. All I saw was a red light at the top center. After drying out over night, it appears to work fine. Regardless, its heading back to Sprint when the new one arrives. I wonder if my old one will get sent out as a refurb to someone?

Totally concurred, I'm glad I opened this thread to take a look... Desktop cradle and green and white faceplates, very nice :D
I've heard of screens cracking for little reason before, sometimes just from the cold. It has to be expected given the amount the manufacturers pump out. Some defective product will always slip through the cracks unfortunately

this happened to me twice - once i was going with my old MDA I to service to get it' D-PAD back operational and i carried it in my pocket, when i got to the service point, the screen was to shreds, dunno why, never happened b4
and second time i had brand new acer n35 and i was also carrying it in my pocket, my girlfriend sat on my laps, though stretching my pants and that time i actually heard the LCD cracking - but since the Acer n35 was bought only 4 hours before this happened, i went back to the store and told them, that i got my PDA like this from the box already - and lol - they believed me and replaced it with a new one, lucky me.
Resume - never carry your PDA in your front or rear trousers pockets :) nowadays i preffer Krusell multidapt system and occasionally i carry my touch in my jacket's brest pocket and hopefully i won't have to suffer thru broken LCD crap again
P.S. for what i have read, seems to me, that TOUCH's screen is rly cracky - you can see that for yourselves, i've never before seen the crystals flow so much under the touch layer even with a little pressure on some places of the screen, especially in the bottom of the screen - even with stylus - guess this is due the "flat" structure of the PDA, the display has no solid external frame, only the thin aluminium cover, which it's actually in, so be damn careful with it :)

Since I know this is a weakness in the TOUCH I have purchased from E-bay the Monaco leather pouch that looks like a book when you open the hard cover. It cost me $26.00 (belt clip included )and it looks kindy funkie, but it sure beats spending hundreds to get it fixed.....by the way the store name is "nakedcellphone",if your interested.

The screen on my first Rogers Elfin broke last week. I live at sea level and I took it skiing without thinking twice about its safety. The ski resort is at 1500+ M above sea level and the temp was about -2 degrees C. Before I even hit the slopes I checked my phone and the screen was white with some colored strips. I originally thought that maybe I bumped it while getting my gear on, but it may have been the change in temp and altitude. Anyway, the phone was only 5 weeks old and graciously my carrier exchanged it for me.
edit: I think for now on I will take my SE w810i when I do any sports.

Thats really unlucky mate :(
I have one, and I've been really lucky with it, ive dropped it twice on concrete from about 1-1/2 metres. And it works fine still (thank god, i love this phone!)
I have a small issue with it, the creen flexes to the smallest amount of pressure, and the lcd in one small wisp like area will like go darker then lighter. It's the same kind of effect if you push the LCD on a monitor or laptop.
Is this normal or not? And it was doing it before I dropped it btw :0

So...
i will make the list longer :
my screen brokes today with a little *knercks*
by touching a number on the dialer :-(
Its a little, small break on middle of the front screen.
The LCD panel gives me now all colours it can show in more
then a half of it after using in this moment :-(
Im not Schwarzenegger, the pressure i did is harmlessly :(
i likewise arrived at the conviction the fact that this is a production error and also as reference as will indicate this thread.
(sorry for my bad english)
