CID-unlock your phone
Application unlock your phone
You will need at least 512Mb SD Card

TESTED ON 2G card and does not work !!!

Install wm5storage on the phone
Guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-267475.html
Run wm5 storage - uncheck "read only" and "removable class"
Connect the phone to pc

Go on the PC to Computer Management - Disk Management and delete the partition on the SD card
create one primary 256 mb partition and format it to FAT
Create an other PRIMARY partition on the remaining space (thanks Eikichi)

!!! DO NOT FORMAT THE SECOND PARTITION !!!

Download the windows EXT2 driver (Ext2fsd v0.31a) from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=43775
and the format tool (Mke2fs v0.02) from the same page
install Ext2fsd v0.31a and restart the PC
extract Mke2fs v0.02 and run
Mke2fs.exe -b 4096 x:
(where x is the unformatted drive letter)

RESTART THE PHONE
START Wm5storage again
Connect the phone to PC

Download http://linuxtogo.org/%7Elaw/htctornado/gpephone/images/20070802/zImage-2.6.16.16-htctornado-20070502071325

and rename it to zImage
http://rapidshare.com/files/57929506/haret-20070816b.exe
rename it to haret.exe

Copy
1.zImage
2.default.txt
3.haret.exe
to the fat partition

Download
http://linuxtogo.org/~florian/gpepe/tornado/Angstrom-gpephone-image-test-20070418-htctornado.rootfs.tar.bz2
extract the .bz2 arhive using winrar (www.rarsoft.com) to the ext2 partition
!! do not extract the arhive to an Folder on the SD!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!! files should be on the root folder!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!IGNORE ALL RAR errors and answer YES to all warnings!!

to start in windows simply reboot the phone
to start linux from windows you launch haret.exe
it is very simple

i had the same problem
1) you need to have
first partition fat
and the second ext2
if the first partition is ext it gives this error

2) if you extract .bz2 files to hdd and copy them you get this error due to acces rights

Best regards

If i can help ask me

After a couple of tries, I finally managed to run linux on my US SDA, but sadly its of no viable use for the moment, most of the menus dont work, GSM does not work, most of the buttons likewise does not function, basically its just a shell with nice icons on it, but it looks promising though, I hope somebody develops it further.

Btw if it would help, you have to set the second partition as primary also and not logical, if windows sees the 2nd partition as RAW file format then there is no way you can copy any files to it, it will always ask you to format it. Windows has to recognize it as a EXT2 file format, to do this install EXT2 volume manager, already posted in the first page.

Hi,

Finally I could make it run.

This time I formatted my MiniSD from Linux.
Created one 64MB primary FAT partition.(formatted from windows) and copied all three files.)
Created second 224MB ext2 partition. (formatted using mkfs tool from linux)
Copied the Ang....tar.bz2 to the partition and extracted in the same partition using bunzip2 and tar utilities.
Removed the original Ang....tar.bz2. (to recover the space used)

I think the problem was due to file permission/ownership issues. I suppose when files are copied/extracted from window XP the file permission/ownership flags are different.
Because I had used same files for both trials.
Else Could be a partitioning issue also. (I'm not sure. Can any one tell what exactly the problem was?)

Regards,

piotroosh

AS ive said in my post this linux build is rather pointless, since GSM or the phone function does not work and much of the OS menus doesnt work right, lets just wait for a new build from jerpelea, with a working phone functionality, PIM etc. :o

If you have time you can try to build with uclibc(not glibc) using uclibc buildroot toolchain. uClibc is best think for "little" device - it's small and it's faster then glibc, there are more free memory...

At this time big problem is audio support, there are some code to initialize EAC but there is not information abut audio management through DSP. Do you have progress?

GSM support is ugly too - no multiplex...

I think some linux-smartphone come out first then some HTC smartphone will support linux:(

I´ve used Opie (Qtopia) and GPE in Collie (http://openzaurus.berlios.de/Collie) and have found that Opie is:

- Faster
- More Mature
- A good bit more "polished"

But in Opie is necessary to use qt-apps. On GPE I can use everything: QT, GTK, Motif,...

The built in browser of GPE is nice, and renders pages a lot better than the version of Konqueror that you get with Opie. However, I then discovered it doesn't support SSL (necesary for Webmails!!!)

I think you must make the two images, is the best way to avoid another KDE vs GNOME war :D:D:D

i just dont understand how to format ext2 need bettter instuktions

and dont just say folow the guide becose im a noob and need help:)

and if no one can help me cant i do all this in one partition

i dont have any windows pc with ext2 stuff on it here. but i'll take a look at it and give you some instructions later.

you also can start the whole stuff from one partition, but you need a other rootfs (initrd) and this is readonly.

i have some problems with my selfmade images currently (kernel panic if i connect via ssh). i have to fix this before i can build a qtopia image....

you have to build your own rootfs image ;-)

i have build a new tornado console-image over night. i'll test this later. if the usb-net works again. i'll also build such a image for you...

I tried to install the LINUX. All were OK until I tried to run HARET.EXE: I got the error message as "Access denied. ... not digitally signed with a trusted certificate"

I tried some other ROM versions just before LINUX, so I think my QTEK 8300 is unlocked

During my research of Power Management issue, I saw some questions/anwsers about this topic but now impossible to find them out

Thanks for your help

It seems it's a problem of my downloaded HARET.EXE (from http://rapidshare.com/files/57929506/haret-20070816b.exe). I just tried another HARET from http://linuxtogo.org/~law/htctornado/gpephone/images/20080115/ and it's OK for starting (but kernel panic - not syncing)

I have tried few times restoring partition both from linux and from windows, but it doesn't work for me. I get the same error:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=63687&d=1199051460

What could be the reason? Maybe my SD card is too large (2GB)?
