htc in japan please help

hey there i have a situation my girlfriend is going to japan and she uses a htc vox (s720 i think), and i want to know if it is possible for her to use the phone in japan since her phone uses a simcard and she tells me that most phones there dont use sim cards. can any1 help with this? if so wich is a preferred service provider and all that thank you
