PocketCM ImageViewer DAILY build
PocketCM ImageViewer is currently a test version, the purpose is to experiment what's possible with image on our Windows Mobile device using the PocketCM framework.
New: OpenGL version (tested on Diamond, should work on touch pro, touch hd, and probably any device with hardware accelerated opengl. Compare opengl and software version, and post result!
To get the daily build : http://www.pocketcm.com/daily.php . Please if you're not confident with beta software, don't try this, wait for a release.
Important: The FPS counter shown IS NOT the actual FPS, the screen get only redrawn on specific event (finger, key press, etc..), so if you don't do anything with the app, it never redraw the screen, therefore the number of frame per second is very low. PLEASE DON'T COMPARE WITH OTHER SOFT FOR FPS, compare what you actually experience
ImageViewer 0.9 (08/03/2008)
- Set image to contact option, with cropping/scaling support.
- All image set to contact will have a maximum size of 320*320 (suitable for full screen call notification)
- New jpeg loader, up to 400% speed improvement on some image.
- Header buttons needs to be pressed on in order to work: avoid closing the app while rotating.
ImageViewer 0.8 (07/30/2008)
- Rotation support (scroll from top to bottom on the rightmost part on the screen when in slide or zoom mode).
- Variable zoom support (slide on the bottom on the screen to change zoom)
- Header button now disappear after a few seconds of inactivity, allowing you to see the picture fullscreen.
- Rewritten image loading engine, should be faster but mostly support bigger image. The good news is that those improvment will be in the next PocketCM Contact build.
ImageViewer 0.7 (07/24/2008)
- Added send via MMS, mail, ...
- Added delete picture (with confirmation)
- Added image caching, remember it's caching, so the first load still takes some times, the second load is faster.
- Bug fixes
ImageViewer 0.6 (07/21/2008)
- Favorite folder list: now you can mark folder as favorite, in order to get a shorter list of the useful folder
- Folder are sorted alphabetically not by image count anymore
- Improved look: comes with a default theme now
- Performance enhancement
- Bug fixes
- You can customize the theme in theme.zip, feel free to post if you make something that look great ;)
ImageViewer 0.5 (07/20/2008)
http://www.pocketcm.com/img/imageviewer/imageviewer1.png http://www.pocketcm.com/img/imageviewer/imageviewer2.png
- This is a major release, so expect lot of new things... and lot of new bugs
- Integrated "flow", grid, slide and folder browser in one app
- New image grid, showing thumbnail
- Press the upper right button to exit
- Press the mode button (@) to switch between flow and grid, or to go back to image list when in slide mode
- Press the back button (top left) to go back to the folder list
- Pressing on an image in flow or thumbnail mode, goes to slide mode
- For theme: the application always dump all the setting when exiting, have a look at dump.txt in your imageviewer folder to start customizing it. Like PocketCM Contact, you need to put a settings.ini with the settings you want to customize in it, they will be loaded at startup. Future release may include theme/options support, but for now, it's intented for testing
ImageViewer 0.4
- Folder list: your start the application, you'll see a scrollable list of all your folder containing pictures, simply tap on one to see the pictures in this folder
- Images smaller than screen aren't resized anymore
- Fixed zoom out animation: not it revert back to unzoomed image position correctly
- Zoom now focus on the tapped zone (tap on the head of a friend, you end up with his head zoomed
- Performance tuning
- Migration to PocketCM framework, settings documentation will come soon...
- Bug fixes
ImageViewer 0.3:
- Image rotation support: maximize the visible space by rotating image.
- Lanscape mode support
- Memory optimization
ImageViewer 0.2:
- zoom: tap on a picture to zoom, double tap to unzoom.
- improved memory management
ImageViewer 0.1
Initial version:
- To close: tap on the upper right corner (like if there was a close button)
- Copy (unzip) to a folder that contains image.
- ImageViewer load image in the background, if you see a white grey box in the top left, that means ImageViewer is loading image.
- Simply slide left or right to go to the previous/next picture.
I don't know yet if it will become a product one day, it's just a experiment for now, if you want it to continue to evolve, support me: http://www.pocketcm.com/donation.php
You can get it from http://www.pocketcm.com

Sounds good,
I put it on my (dutch) HTC Touch,
i put it in the folder were all my pictures are because thats what he wants.
then i opened it..
it was loading (gray box in the left corner)
then it asked me to choose a program to close because it does not have enough memory.
i closed everything that was running but it still needed more memory.
so in the end, cant use it.

Hi,
Just tested it... quite a nice app. I believe there are more to come.
For a start, you have to place this app with the same folder of the pics. Correct me if I am wrong.
I like the smooth scrolling.. :)

Hi,
I tried this time with images from my DSLR that had been reduced from 3.3mb to about 80K.
Results
1. The files could be seen.
2. However, the images are pixelated (as if it was stretched from a small thumbnail)
3. There are a total of 8 images.
4. Whenever I scroll back and forth, it sometimes display the image path rather than the image (for a second or two) before returning backe to the pixelated picture.
5. Waited for 10 minutes, results is still the same.

@all
Can you retry I uploaded the wrong file.
The version you tested used lot of resources per image.
I tested on my touch with 2 mp image (so 1600*1200), I can't say loading is really fast, but sliding seems good to me (considering it's a 200Mhz device).

I was wondering if it would be possible to incorporate the PocketCM framework into a start menu browser?
would this be possible

Nice job, perfect for Touch :)

Works fine on my prophet.
In landscape mode the pictures seem to overlay each other on the right side.
I guess it doesn't support landscape yet since the picture is covered by the next pic after what seems to be 240 pxl (width of screen in normal mode).

1st October 2007, 05:15 PM
Hi,
The pic that I used is resized to : -
Size in pixel: 567 X 853
Size in cm: 20 cm X 30.09 cm
Resolution: 72 pixels/inch
I did some more tests: -
1. I use the original of my pic
Size in pixel: 2000 X 3008
Size in cm: 70 cm X 106.12 cm
Resolution: 72 pixels/inch
Results: NG
2. I use my pic from D810 and resave it using Photoshop 6.0
Size in pixel: 1600 X 1200
Size in cm: 56.44 cm X 42.33 cm
Resolution: 72 pixels/inch
Results: NG
So I guess it is the photoshop that caused the problem
Cheers!

Works great on my stock dutch Touch. Loading is fast but I only have about 10 pictures in that folder, I don't know if that effects things. The pictures are taken by the Touch's 2MP camera.
Sliding is amazingly smooth. If you can make it so you'll be able to choose folders or just locate images like Audio Manager locates music it would be perfect. Oh well, and maybe an option to rotate or zoom.
Great work on this app. But I wasn't expecting any less after seeing your great work on PocketCM and Keyboard.

Great work again Tene. As previously Reported, Landscape needs some tweaking but for a first Wag at this I would have to say very nice. Adding Some Menuing that drops down from the top (Ala Pocket CM Conacts) to Exit the App or Start a "Slide Show would be really Sweet. I think as you move forward replacing the default "Pictures" app in Windows Mobile with this would be awesome.

Ditto :)
Really Looking forward to it!
Just to make things clear: For me it was a test, developer test. It wasn't meant to be a product by itself, I just saw some people trying to make it (and mostly failing) and I needed some code to test some aspect of the pcm framework (the shared codebase between keyboard, contact and not this stuff).
If you want to convince me to make it something more, as always, donate, that's about the only thing that could make me spend lot of time on it. The challenging part (loading image in the background, keep it smooth and relatively memory efficient) is already done. So most of the fun is already gone for me.
Regarding people wanting this framework, I've no plan to release it, sorry.

really cool (pre)app.. i noticed one little bug though: it can't read jpeg files where the .jpg suffix is in caps. so for example sl3456.JPG is not recognised, while sl3456.jpg is recognised correctly...
btw. htc is releasing an imageviewer as well, the new HTC Touch Dual will be released with this added app.... has anyone tried that app already?

realy realy cool..
thing that would be nice if you have any motivation to do so:
use up and down movements to zoom in and out. or dubble tap and make it zoom on that spot.. (dont know how much work that is)
the background would be nicer if it would be black instead of white..
maybe a button/function to get about 6 or 9 pictures in the screen and then select one to see it in large.. and then be able to scroll like it does now or go back to thumbnail.

No screenshot because it only shows your photos in full screen.
Works Awesome on my 8525 running Schap's 3.60a, nice to be able to see the full photos and nice to be able to scroll like the iphone.
I expect that the developer will include d-pad navigation and some way to see all the photos and choose a different starting point than always from the beginning.

Yeah.. picture files saved using Adobe Photoshop (Im using CS2) appears pixelated. Maybe something with how Photoshop encodes images.
Add this, and it'll be almost perfect:
Landscape Support
Auto rotation to fill the screen
Browse a specific directory (with an option to browse subdirectories)
Add options to set as contact image, send via..., Zoom, Delete, etc.
Just suggestions. I know if it's too easy, you get bored doing it. I'll try to think of something really challenging for you later.. :D
Nice work tene. You da man. ;)

Well Tene, you have done it again! And I am willing to donate a 3rd time.
I agree with a few of the other comments in the thread. I like the idea of going full fit to screen as standard viewing with the photos. Most of mine are 320x240 and i only see the photos as the standard picture viewer size would be.
I think a flick to scroll, like PocketCM, of the picture database would be nice. It would be a great way to pick a starting place or just to get a quick view of the pic folder.
Pan, Rotate, Zoom. Marcus has done a great job on the zoom with his programs. http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=5899329.
I also like the album flipper as seen in the video by Byka.

Getting better by the release!!!!
Request:
Tene, What do you think of a drag and zoom option? Not giving up the tap to zoom, but may a user defianable to choose between drag to zoom to a specific size.
Background to black, or user define background color. I prefer black.
Bug:
Still getting a little pic overlay or previous image residual to the side while in landscape mode. Almost like the area you would implement album style flipping.(is that what your going for, I hope I hope I hope ;) ) It isn't always the previous pic it sometimes is the image of the previous window pain.
Keep up the good work

Sorry Tene,
I know you are saying it's just an "experiment" and you're not sure if you want to make a full project, but I'm afraid we're going to bombard you with compliments (and hopefully $$) to take this forward... ;-)
Like others are saying: amazing
The beauty in your apps is the simplicity and light overhead. At this pace you'll make a whole new WM shell, which from what we've seen so far, would be fantastic, lol.
The only things I would suggest:
- Adjust some sensitiivity on the taps/swipes (I end up zooming on the swipe to next picture)
- D-pad support
- Whatever you can think of
Just sent a small donation to show support.

i see it as try to make ...frame for..something, but NOT pict viewer, for sure.
do you want to make interface for..i dunno, multicontats manager or something? pictures viewer needs interface, not just fluid zoom and touch (shit) scrolling..
sorry for saying that, but, really, without good interface, it is useless(do i need to copy it to EVERY folder i am keeping pics in?)....

touch scroll is such nonsense...try to use 2048x1536 zoomed image(mainboard photo i.e.) with that...;/

i think, you shoudln't lose your time, and efforts for ...such thing... your soft is awesome(pocketcm, pkeyboard), but viewer...is other story...i appreciate what you did for xdadev community and much more users...
but
imagine 2048x1536 jpeg, mainboard photo, jpeg map, anything.
then, imagine interface, that may be useful for zoomed management.
you know what i am trying to say?
people are using more, than mms 112x80 images...maybe i am wrong, i hope, that my post did not make you sad :(....
one more thing - pics read/decode engine is VERY fast, it's amazing. i dare to say, that it might kill resco/xnview decoders...

do you want to make interface for..i dunno, multicontats manager or something? pictures viewer needs interface, not just fluid zoom and touch (shit) scrolling..
sorry for saying that, but, really, without good interface, it is useless(do i need to copy it to EVERY folder i am keeping pics in?)....
-1 for now.i know that is WIP, but...
touch scroll is such nonsense...try to use 2048x1536 zoomed image(mainboard photo i.e.) with that...;/
best wishes, i do not want to flame, remember that...
i think, you shoudln't lose your time, and efforts for ...such thing... your soft is awesome(pocketcm, pkeyboard), but viewer...is other story...i appreciate what you did for xdadev community and much more users...
but
imagine 2048x1536 jpeg, mainboard photo, jpeg map, anything.
then, imagine interface, that may be useful for zoomed management.
you know what i am trying to say?
people are using more, than mms 112x80 images...maybe i am wrong, i hope, that my post did not make you sad :(....
one more thing - pics read/decode engine is VERY fast, it's amazing. i dare to say, that it might kill resco/xnview decoders...
Nothin, I think your user name describes you. Dude just go grab a dull pencil, shove it in your eye and DIE!!!! Man, let Tene and the rest of the community decide if what he is doing is worth while and keep your friggin mouth shut. Why don't you try and stop speaking English and spend your time on something more useful like self-mutilation. Your exactly the type of person that freedom of speech is taken away from... If you don't find the program useful, develope one yourself or through your computer, ppc and self in the trash. Jackwad!!!!!!!!!

Hi Tene,
just donated as a thanks for PocketCM, PCMKeyboard, and hopefully the continued development of this third promising program for the PDA.
I really appreciate the work you've put into all of this -- and I hope you continue to enjoy your work as much as we do.

I sensed a huge moron on the previous page
He doesn't know why the app has a version that starts with 0.x
He probably doesn't know what "experimental" means
Or maybe his brain lacks enough neurons to be able to read.
Damn... I hate morons. Why did God create such beings.. He is so cruel.

You are one hell of a talented man. You can overthrow the best software companies out there singlehandedly with your awesome apps. Is it something with the food you're eating..? 'cause damn.. I wish I could do what you do.
Btw, I like the way you release your apps. Every small new feature is released as new version.. always keeps you hungry for more. :D

This is actually an awesome idea, tene. Pop a GUI in, maybe add a hold function to pop a menu or a menubar, add an indexer, and some fading and you're set for me.
It's already impressing my friends as an alpha, can't wait for beta.

If you want a more "end user" kind d of product, you may want to check this one out:

It has menus, and some other stuff. While it is still in development, it is not a bad app.
However, I like Tene's work somewhat better since it seems much smoother. Besides Tene's work does not seem to crash, whereas the other one does.

Yeah, pocketCM's "framework" seems better.
tene's app got more potential... can't wait to see this app at its 1.0.

PocketCM ImageViewer 0.2
PocketCM ImageViewer is currently a test version, the purpose is to experiment what's possible with image on our Windows Mobile device using the PocketCM framework.
I don't know yet if it will become a product one day, it's just a experiment for now
You can get it from http://www.pocketcm.com

Note to people having this problem of "shutting down"
I thought i was in the same mess, but realized while zooming and scrolling i would accidentally hit the top "exit button"
"what exit button?" you might ask... There is an "invisible button" located just where the OK button normally is (even overlaps the image) and when pressed CLOSES the software.
so please try 0.2 again! And get a feel of the location of this button

0.3 is nice. The swipe left/right function works better now (doesn't accidentally auto-zoom like in 0.2).
My only issue: the auto-landscape feature
Obviously this makes sense for a lot of devices except for square screens, so on the Treos it goes to landscape for some photos but there is no gain/reason to do so. Not sure how to make it optional, but it would be nice if it could be done.

You take your device in your hand, and rotate your hand (and your device ;)
The picture is automatically rotated for you to cover more screen space.

Let me tell you tene, you got some serious skills. And I'm a programmer myself. I use all your apps on my prophet and I hope you keep this one going.
A browser with preview and click-open that could replace the default pic browser and you'll have v1.0

Hi tene, this is pretty nice on my artemis. Can you add zoom to point of tap, and can you make the file a circular list. The icing on the cake would be some options with nice transitions, oh and an index bar invisible on the side of the screen with a tiny pre-cashed column of thumbs. Basically I really like it a lot and I think you are right clever you are. Thanks and looking forward to more.

This version is a lot more stable,
it has not quit on me ones!
very nice!
I did notice that when a picture is zoomed in, and you go to the next picture, that it shows me a blank screen. and nothing happens until i return to the zoomed picture and unzoom it first.
and a view times i wanted to slide true the pics and it zoomed instead.
little question..
are there different gestures to zoom and unzoom?
or is it just 2/3 times zoom and then it zooms out?
(by the way, what does it react to? tap hold and release, or double tap?)
Points i would still love to see:
- a cycle, so i can go from the first picture to the last one, and from the last on to the first one.
- black background
- start with a thumbnails screen, to select one picture, then slide true the pictures as it does now, then be able to go back to thumbnails. (and maybe do 6 or 9 thumbnails per page and be able to slide true that as well.)
- umm.. thats it for now :D

Good work guys, this app have alot of potential.
It will be nice to have bilinear scaling for zoom. I understand that making a thumbnail view is not an easy thing, but for now, It can be enough to just switch to folder where the file, passed as argument, is located. This can't be hard to code..

Hello Tene,
Works great on my TyTN II.
I would love to see this developed further...I'm already a fan of PocketCM and your Keyboard. I would only donate again if I knew that this was indeed being developed...thats only fair. :)
Suggestions, that will maybe help shape this more so that more people get excited by it.
-Gesture zooming....much like Picsel browser. Press/Drag finger UP to zoom in, and Press/drag down to zoom out.
-Since Up/down is zoom. Left/Right can be next/previous image.
-Both of the above swipe gestures should adjust to work the same way when in Portrait/Landscape mode. The "close button" should also always be in the top right of the screen even when in landscape mode.
Nice initial start to get people excited, greatly looking forward to seeing this develop further.
Regards,
G.

Tene, as usual this is a killer app you have there. As many others, I'm sure I would donate again to see it grow to maturity -- which, IMHO, is not that far from what we have here.
What I think the core features should be :
- browse for a folder to view pics from (and if you can do it PocketCM-style, it's beyond my wildest dreams)
- navigation gesture (drag left previous pic, drag right next pic -- just as now)
- quicknav gesture (double drag -- or two drags performed very quickly -- move to first or last pic in folder)
- zoom gesture (drag up zooms in, drag down zooms out)
- rotate gesture (double tap rotates clockwise)
- close gesture (tap & hold for 700+ ms exits the app)
Keep up the good work !
Regards,

Well, lot of feature request, maybe it's time to frame a little what I want to achieve with such tools:
- I don't want to make swiss knife of picture, lot of tools already exist and do great stuff. The main scenario I want to cover is: look how beautiful is my family, were my holidays, etc...: quickly browse through a folder of pictures.
- I don't want complex gesture: it's hard to achieve with finger (at least for me), and imho doesn't really add value.
- I want instant feedback, not "draw the gesture and wait/hope for it to happen": when you start sliding, it slide. Again I don't pretend that's the way to go, the way to make the killer app some people expect, but that's something worth trying. (that's why Multitouch got it right, you keep instant feedback, while allowing more "natural" gesture, but we don't have it).
- I don't see why rotation should be an option, you can rotate the device, what's important is taking profit of the screen space, that's why rotation works this way now. (however, the bug with 240x240 device should be addressed, not rotation should be made for those device, it's probably a < that should be <= ).
- For browsing picture and going directly to the one interesting, there should be something, but I'm still thinking about how to make it really usable while keeping the thing very simple.
- Variable zoom could be nice... but it would be hard to mix it with sliding and moving zoomed picture, also is it really useful? for now there is 3 zoom level, which allow to look at a picture pretty well... and I prefer to keep it simple, at least for now. If you have idea about how zooming could/should work, please also think about sliding (which look very smooth because even a short move produce a feedback) and moving a zoomed picture. What's still to be tuned however is the zoom level. 0.2 came with 150% then 300%, 0.3 is 200% then 400%.
Also, I started this thing differently than other: it's mostly a performance contest for me, not a "add 20 gesture that make the app crash in a while and be slow as hell". I understand some people will prefer more function even if less effective, but that's not exactly the way I designed it. Also I still have the feeling that testing is required to see what's working and what's not, maybe we will be able to learn from the HTC app shown in some video (that looked quite slow and hard to use to me for a 400Mhz device, but it's just a youtube video, reality is probably much better).
The initial idea remains to use it as test for future things used in pcmc and keyboard, most of the work was on picture loading time for instance, which would make pcmc and keyboard start up faster.
Also there is the framework behind, which start to become quite stable and usable, I have still lot of work to do, but it will probably be a good base for other application, my main objective is to allow enhancement of keyboard and contact by maintaining a shared code base. I don't want to open source it, I tested open source, and wasn't really that for me.
I got a few donation, so you got a 0.2 and a 0.3, which become, rather stable. Go on!

There's no reason to change your attitude!
For me 0.3 got the maximum features. Its a very nice picture viewer.
The only thing is to install the imageViewer to a Directory and run it out of there. After startup you choose a dir with pic's and the Software start to show the images.
This would be Perfect!
I've testet the 0.3 on my german touch (Original HTC German rom) without any errors.

Hi tene, slide to zoom sounds bad to me because you would not be able to zoom to a particular area. With tap to zoom, of course you could. If you had double tap to zoom, the distance between taps could be relative to the power of the zoom. If you want to zoom in on a particular face, tap the face, quickly tap anywhere else, 1cm away= 2x, 2cm away= 3x and so on. With tap and hold 250ms to unzoom. Rotation is good but a little random and we need to be able to add bookmarks/tabs to jump to in a big file, maybe tapping right in a corner. Thanks again tene.

I agree with Xenpain. And you are absolutely right. I'd rather have a program that does not make me wait for a minute or two every time it is trying to load the thumbnails or even the pictures themselves. For those of you that do not know what I am talking about, please open your original picture viewer. If you have more than 5 pictures, you are going to be waiting for a while until you can even see the picture.
The directory thing however, is not a bad idea. Otherwise, you have to copy the .exe file wherever you have your pics. In my case, I don't mind because I have all the pics saved in the same folder. But all in all, still a good idea.
BTW, 0.3 works like a charm!!

Once again, you got it right. My wishlist was exactly that - a wishlist. The app already rocks like hell as it is now -- it just misses a couple of things to become part of the "holy trinity" (pocketcm, keyboard and imageviewer). And the most critical thing it misses is the ability to pick a folder and browse pics inside. The rest would be cosmetic.

I think the zooming is fine for now, who cares if you can zoom to point if you can pan the image? its not hard to zoom and then move the picture. The only thing i would change would be a black background instead of white and a circle loop. Also my only minor gripe is that it zooms the picture for me when i exit with the grey square, nothing major though. And this version is sooo smooth, great work tene

LOL! :D @ HOLY TRINITY.
Few requests:
1. Directory Selection
2. File operations (Copy, Move, Delete)
3. Replace the default (piece of crap) Pictures App
You're the best! Thanks! ;)

Tene,
I origanally was on the band wagon of requesting the "drag to zoom" feature. As I have played with the program a little more, I realize that it may not be necessary. Especially at the risk of loosing some of the fluidness of the program as it is. IMO, everything works as it is. Maybe a 4th stage of preset zoop between the last 2 would be good. Here is an overall summation of what could be done to finalize it.
1.) Clean up the back ground some. Black is best, IMO.
2.) A little faster load time if possible. (It does seem to take a little while to get more than 10-15 pics on my device. And going back more than that it sometimes must reload what I have already viewed. That may just be device specific though. Maybe a cache memory of the last load even after the program closes could me saved and then a menu option to update/reload the folder if a lot of new pics are added. I think that would allow for quicker load time. This may also work with a thumbnail searcher. Allowing the user to define whether to open in view or thumbnail to select a start point.)
3.) Menu navigating is would be nice. I have solved this problem for now by creating a temp folder on my device and inside of it pasting the shortcuts(naming them differently) from the individual folders that I keep pictures so that I can quick launch to a list I choose.)
4.) Press and hold for menu options. i.e. File explore, Thumbnail view, etc...
You are correct, there is no need for a rotate action on lanscape devices. If I can't take the 2.5ms to lay my phone on its side to see those pics I am a retard!!!!
I think you frame work is phenominal. Smoothest and best I have seen. I will continue to donate as I can. It would be awesome to see this Pan, Scroll, Zoom (P-S-Z as I refer to it) be a basis for File exploration, Web surfing, document view etc. Especially for those of us not using cooked (half baked more like it) ROMS.
Thanks for your brains.

This viewer is great!! Ive been waitin gfor this long time...
However, i have a few minor suggestions:
1. At start up, show pictures as thumbnail (if you have a lot of pictures, and you want to see on specific picture, you can choose it right away and dont have to flip through all the pictures...)
2. I love the zoom (tap and it zooms, double tap, and it goes back to normal viewing; much better than the iPhone pinch system! please dont change...) But no matter where I tap the picture, it will zoom into the center of the pic. I'd love to tap on a face for example, and then the face becomes the center of the zoomed picture...
Other than that, its a dream picruter viewer!!

my needed list again
1 thumbnails
2 zoom to choosen spot
3 faster zooming
4 i would really like to see momentum scrolling through pics, not only when zooming, but to momentum scroll on a full screen pic to get to a picture thats maybe 3-4 pictures away, so that i dont have to swipe the screen 3-4 times

That's because zooming here is not a redraw of a particular part of the image... its a resample(dunno the correct terms).
Really reaaally waiting for a new version with dir browsing or at least a menu.

Hi tene
Version 0.4 is GREAT..marked improvement from 0.3
I like the fact it can be placed in any folder & it lists image folders
I have 2 suggestions:
- a folder tree for all folders (like file explorer) instead of the first screen folder menu
- please make icon for your software, now its just a plain white box & doesn't look as good because i want to place it in my today launch screen
Otherwise this software ROCKS

Hi Tene,
This works wonderfully well on my wizard... @ 240Hz
Could you change background color to black. Will look better than white (I think).
Also, idea of folder tree is much better... or... if it could only scan the sub-folders of the folder from where it is executed. Then it could be placed in the My Pictures folder. Right now it also lists folders from the "Programs" directory which is not desirable.
"Close" could also be a 2 step process... going back to folder list/tree... and then to exit.
Great app... makes viewing pictures a pleasure
Thanks

Firstly, thank you for this excellent software. huge progress from the version 0.3 to ver 0.4.
Secondly, i understand that many people (including me) find the list of images from program files folder inconvenient. so far there have been pointers on how it should scan only the sub folders or have a folder tree. sub folder is not the best idea as it would be going back to ver 0.3 where the binary file had to be localized for viewing multiple folders list. and the idea of folder tree conflicts heavily with the simplistic interface that ImageViewer seems to have assumed (atleast thats my feelign personally..)
What i would like to suggest is a config file where a list of folders to be excluded (recursively.. as in all the sub folders within the mentioned folder ) could be mentioned and excluded from the list. (Something like the exclude programs for eFrost's FTouchFlo... maybe?). Anyways.. thanks again for the GREAT app. can't wait to see the next version

Or maybe agree on a "always excluded list", making it a setting will make it complex for most user (and most user don't even care about settings). I've already excluded the windows folder. \program files could be excluded too. Another approach I'd like to use is removing folder with small picture, computing the actual picture size would be time consuming, but guessing it from the image size could work.
Other than that, I agree with you, making it an explorer tree would make it complex, and that's not the intent, the only scenario I really want to cover is the "look how beautiful my family is", not the "I can also make the coffee with this app". So I expect the user to sort his picture before using it (which is and will probably always be easier to do trough a real PC).

lol.. coffee... that would be impressive ::D
ok.. so we agree on a "always excluded list" which should satisfy the majority.
but having this list on a external file, rather than hard coded into the source would make it more.. scalable? so you can let people decided if they want to praise their family or make coffee with the app...
But then again, like you have mentioned, if somehow, using your magical programming skills, small picture are in fact eliminated (without much overhead..) , then it would make the 'list' redundant.
The only reason why i wanted the exclude folder option was that besides the annoying small pics.. there might be.. lets say.. er.. sensitive pictures that you dont want your grandmom to see. But then again i guess i would be classifed as a "I can also make the coffee with this app" person for wanting that option.

Hi Tene, how about a way to jump to the beginning or end of the folder your in. The main reason for this would be when I take a photo I would like to view it directly with PCMIV, without having to flick through the fifty other photos I took today. I also think that there is great potential to expand your browser, however I would prefer PCMIV to open directly at the last picture viewed and not at the browser screen, which should be called up by a gesture or a button. Thanks again, I use all your apps. they are the nicest out there.

So the things I would like to see put in the app:

must say how nice this program is coming along.
This is off topic, but I think using the scrolling list algorithm, I think you can also make a great music player, or even to start out just a music organizer.
Like in this program where it locates pciture files and let's you scroll through the list, perhaps you can do one for music and when you tap on the music file, it plays the music through an external program like HTC or wmp. From there you can make it to have a built in player.
Just an off topic thought.

As discussed: what folder would you want to exclude? I have the feeling that \program files and \windows (which is already excluded) would work for most people, any other folder? Also exlcuding folder that don't contains big picture.
2 - Startup folder configurable on txt or via command line argument(essencial)

3 - Quick access list like the one on pocketcm

yes and no, the issue is that I have to be very carefull with memory, with the current version if you scroll fast, you'll end up by seeing "loading..." instead of pictures. It's fine if you scroll slowly one by one, if I add a "quick scrolling" it will basically show white images.
- like others said, an exclusion option, or better yet, a tree view
tree view makes the UI more complex. With previous version: zero tap to get the picture displayed, with this one, one tap... with tree view: lot of tap. I can undestand why you want it, but for me it's not part of a "simple, fast and sleek viewer".
- im assuming this was coming anyways, but a toss feature in the viewer would be cool

I think everything is possible... with infinite time and resource, unfortunately I don't have that... other people are focusing on that however, maybe one of those implementation will match your needs. Personnaly as of today, I'd be more interrested in a decent calendar viewer.

hi tene,
regarding your reply post:
I getting a lot of application dirs probably from old wm2k3 instalations for example(didn't use program files). I didn't know you restricted program files so i'll make a cleanup and I'll be fine.
As for arguments using imageviewer.exe -i "image.jpg" or imageviewer.exe -d "directory" would be of extreme use...
as for the fast access for files like the vertical alphabetic bar on pocketcm, it would be nice since I have a huge photo album but I do understand your loading about 10 pics at a time in an array to keep the memory usage low which is fine but would slow down fast search. I'm guessing doing a fast search via a horizontal bar would take as much time as opening the first image and a load of about 2-3 seconds would be fine.... of course a static bmp background would be much better than white...
or.... you could do a nice fade in fade out to win some time for the loading... but that is just unecessary now

Hey Quentin,
Glad to see you're still working on this program. I'm especially glad for the spot-specific zoom and not enlarging photos less than the screen dimensions. I have to tell you though, I really think you've missed the mark with the current way you have set up your browser. You keep saying that you want simplicity, but the thing is, a file-tree IS simple. Everyone who's ever been on a computer knows how to use one, and since it's their PPC, they know where to go to get at the folder they're looking for. As it is now, I have my pictures very much subdivided, many with sub-folders of the same name but under different folders, so as it is now with your browser setup, I have to scroll down through no less than 178 folders looking for a specific one, then having to read the fine print to find out if it's really the folder I'm looking for (and often I can't even do that because the filepath doesn't wrap, it gets cut off before the important, differentiating part). So as it stands now, I could either go exactly where I need to go with a file-tree, or I could scroll, scroll, scroll, wait is that the one I'm looking for?, scroll, scroll, oh there it is, whoops wrong folder couldn't see the full filepath, scroll, wait was that an "M"? Hard to tell when they're not in alphabetical order, scroll, scroll, oh finally here we are, hey guys look how cool my ppc is! :P In my opinion it's not even close in terms of simplicity, the file-tree wins hands down.
P.S. Plus there are some times I WANT to look in the windows folder, but now I have to use a separate program for that.

hi tene,
just tried installing your viewer app (0.4) for the first time in my ipaq hx2495 (WM5) and i was simply amazed at what you were able to do. its UI and simplicity is wonderful! :)
however, i'm finding something odd regarding what's happening to my experience. i was able to view images that were already in my ppc before i installed your app. any jpg i add to it in a folder (w/o the aforementioned images that were already there) would simply not be seen by Imageviewer's folder list. the folder itself will not be listed at all. but if i put a previously existing image in the device into that folder with the new images, the folder will suddenly be recognized by the app's folder list and the images will now be viewable. if i take out the previously existing image from the folder, the folder will again be forgotten by the app. :(
i run your app from my sd card. and these images i added are also in a folder in my card. the app won't find these new images even if i put them in the device's internal my documents folder. the images are plain screencaps of my pc in jpeg format saved using basic windows microsoft paint. i tried directly copying the images to the SD card using a card reader and copying the images to both my sd card and the ppc internal my docs folder using activesync but it simply would not be seen by imageviewer. really really wierd. :(
any idea what's going on with my experience? how do i let the app recognize the new images i put in? can any other user confirm this wierd instance as well?
regards,
myownregister

"toss feature"??
Sorry, i really didnt explain, picsel browser has it, you can kind or momentum toss an image across screen when zoomed in on it, its a whole lot easier than manually dragging when trying to view the image.
The least that can happen is maybe a sensitivity increase when manually scrolling on a single image (i.e. the image moves faster than you are actually dragging it)
Thanks in advance

tene,
Good work. I have to admit, I prefer the older version only because I don't have to look through all of the folders to find my picture album. With this version, any folder that has an image in it gets loaded (like what blowfish explained). This can be somewhat of a pain. So for now, I will be using the 0.2 version. I love the concept though. We just need to get rid of the other folders.

hi larna,
yes, the application process isn't running when i relaunch Imageviewer. i checked both the process list using sktools and the running programs list and didn't find Imageviewer running before i launch it. i also tried a soft reset to maybe refresh the system but Imageviewer still doesn't see it after the soft reset. i have wisbar advanced installed and use its built-in "x" program close function and it closes any app that i open.
i'm wondering if the app somehow is picky with imagefiles on how it was encoded even though it's a jpg as well.
but the thing that boggles my mind is that if i place an image from another folder that was already there long before into the folder with the new jpegs, Imageviewer would now recognize the folder. another weird thing is that in Imageviewer's folder list it would only register 1 image inside it (the older image i just placed) and not register the other new ones in the count. when i tap the now recognized folder to view the images, surprisingly they would all be viewable by Imageviewer.
i hope i gave you enough details on how i'm running things to give you a clearer picture of my device setup even though what's happening is really creepy. :)

in order to fix it: provide the *exact* names of your picture in your folders. Also a zip containing some "invisible" picture would help.

I LOVE this program. It was working great until this afternoon, now, for some reason, when I click on the .exe it just sits there and does nothing. I have to do a soft reset to keep working. I tried to delete it and reinstall it, but the same result. Any idea? I am using WM6 on an Ipaq 111.
Thanks!

hi tene,
it worked!!! :) thanks for the speedy post!
as you mentioned, i created a new image file on my pc with its properties set to "read only", "hidden", and "archive" then transfered it to my sd's folder containing the new images. true enough, Imageviewer recognized it!
a million thanks to you and larna for helping me out! this is one truly amazing app. :) PCM Imageviewer is WAY better than all the image viewers out there, even a heck of a lot better than picsel (it's just the best for documents IMHO).

Tried v4 have to say I personally prefer the old way of accessing pics, i.e. just putting image viewer.exe into folder containing photos and then adding a shortcut. New directory finder is a bit to fiddly. Thanks for all your great work.

How about an option to send the pics? That is the only reason I am using HTC Album, because I can click on the pic and it comes up with a menu to delete, send, or exit.

I have waited the update for long time, it is so cool.
I can use the version 0.3 but failed in version 0.4
when I start the program , it seems freeze for very long time without display anything. >_< I am using asus p525 wm5
I have try to place the progam in the root folder , but still freeze , >_< any body like me have the same problem?
I have that same problem. Did you ever figure out how to fix it? I've been working nonstop trying everything I can think of. The funny thing is....it worked fine for a couple of days, then quit. I probably messed something up....user error.
It is a GREAT program, I really wish I get it working again. Does anyone know of any temp files are created when you run it? Maybe I accidentally deleted a dll, ini, etc file. I can make V3 work fine right now, but I LOVED the Version 4. Anyone have this problem and know how to fix it?

Hello, tene, thanks for this nice application! I use it from time to time, currently in version 0.4. I think it is very good already, and you are right if you want to make it as much simple as possible...
As for exclude list, you said sooner in this thread that /program files/ subfolder is already excluded, but I can still see them... not /windows/, just /program files/. This can be of course done also by include list - e.g. /My Documents/ in RAM and on Memory Card, plus /DCIM/ on Memory Card.
It would be nice to remember zoom level for viewing images in the same directory plus with the same size.
Also, for my Treo it is not necessary to rotate pictures automatically as I have a square screen :)
One more idea: do not allow the picture to go "outside of the display" - if I tap the image which is bigger then the display, it is not necessary to allow free place between display edge and image - the screen area should be always fully inside the picture.
What else do I miss - gestures for image zoom (in steps - not sure...) and rotation (in steps: 0 - 90 - 180 - 270 - 0) and also TGA support.

- A way to return to the directory from the image

Is there any way to take advantage of the benefits of v. 0.4 but not have the list of folders come up at the beginning (like in v 0.2), and it just the select the folder it resides in.

That scrolling routine (framework) is really incredible! I also use the PocketCM contact manager, but it really shines in this application.
From my point of view there isn't that much needed to make this a really great and quite complete (although simple of course) image viewer.
Here's what I would like to see (again, the scrolling is really incredible, so I hope you will consider these - there could be a donation on the way then :) ):
1) It should remember your last used directory (it doesn't seem to work now)
2) There should be a thumbnail view which you should be able to get back to easily (maybe the tap in the upper left corner - just a suggestion)
3) This is kind of a bug, but when you zoom in you can drag the picture as far as you want, which means it will get out of the screen and you will just see a grey background.
4) Rendering (in full/higher resolution) could be a little faster when you zoom.
5) Not really important, but it would be cool if you could drag it the other way, which would be sideways when held in landscape mode (if this is hard to program, just forget it)
That's all :p 4 or 5 steps away from having the perfect image viewer! I really hope you will at least consider it :)
Edit: Just found out that you actually can use the upper left corner for going back :p
Another small improvement could be a better looking loading icon (the one in the upper left corner when loading a picture). Just some little spinning GIF animation would be nice, but I guess it's easy to implement if you wish to.

I tried a few of the pic viewers and so far this is my fav. I would LOVE a way to exclude/include folders... only thing it needs IMO.
One thing, "upper left corner" is the upper left corner of the phone. My phone landscapes all the pics, so I end up tapping the upper right of the pic to return.

PocketCM ImageViewer 0.4
PocketCM ImageViewer is currently a test version, the purpose is to experiment what's possible with image on our Windows Mobile device using the PocketCM framework.
Any updates? How about image rotation? Thanks. Love the speed!

Wow tene, this is a super fast and friendly update, just a couple of things.
Any chance of making it order the folders found by directory structure? I have all my pics organised into many sub directories but to find the appropriate one I have to jump around the whole list and remember the name of the folder. Will have a play with dump.txt and settings.ini.
Cosmetically the text of directory path and number of pics in directory overlap.
Also it displays portrait pictures upside down...

I think this is very close to perfect except for one major flaw.
Please allow us to easily search folders. At the moment, I must have like a hundred folders with pictures, and all of them show up in the folder selection view. It's very hard to search, especially since it's sorted according to the total number of pictures in the folder. So my request:
1) Arrange folders according to alphabetical order
2) Have a "random access" type scroll to scroll to the chosen alphabet
3) Or better yet, have the option to exclude certain folders that we do not want to see.
Really like the software, thanks!

0.5 is great.
I found a bug perhaps.
If I am in Slide-mode an zoom in by tapping, than double tap to zoom out, it zooms back to the flow mode picture (but I am in slide mode). I have to switch to other pictures and back to this one to have it in slide-mode again.
Some suggestions:
- can we have dpad support in flow-mode
- is it possible to make the @-button to go back from slide-mode to the last used mode (thumbnail or flow-mode), at the moment it switches allways to flow mode
- can we have the pictures in thumbnail mode cropped square and not rotated?
Thanks for this great app!!!

Good Work .. I have been using this application on my HTC touch for some time. I just downloaded ver0.6 and tried this application. It's a fantastic application but takes around 5-6MB of memory, works fine.. Good interface, has smooth Flow, I felt Icon size should be increased when in flow mode. It still takes a while to load pictures if you have more than 15 Pictures in a folder. An option for rotating the picture could have been better, also in Full screen view top bar stays on, Looks good if it is hidden in fullscreen view, just a wishlist :).
Overal good application Thank you.. I will continue testing and report the results.

Hey tene,
There are some nice things in here, but it needs some modifications before it can compete with A_C's S2V.
First of all, I find the kinetic scrolling extremely annoying. Why have you made it so that we have to hold down for a second before a swipe gesture will register? Is this modifiable? I found the PocketCM scrolling much more practical and finger-friendly.
Secondly, I still maintain that the way you have the folder view set up now is cumbersome at best. You should look at A_C's program for how a well-thought-out folder system can be implemented.
Thirdly, being able to move down the folder list using the sidebar would be nice for people who have several hundred picture folders (takes a really long time to manually scroll down those). Of course, as I already mentioned, I think the entire folder system is a very bad idea anyway, so this is just another example of why it's impractical.
Another missing piece is the lack of true fullscreen. The taskbar and back/view/exit bar are always visible over the picture, which I think is a bad idea. I feel a tap-and-hold to bring these up would work better. I also think a tap-and-hold could bring up a zoom slider along with those bars, but I know you have no interest in that kind of zoom.
The bottom line for me is that this program just lacks the functionality and ease of use that other viewing programs have (only a 2-step zoom, poor folder system, no rotate, no delete, no send to email, no set-as-wallpaper option, etc. etc. etc.) so for me it will probably only be just a passing novelty. However, I do like the way you've made it skinnable (something I really wish other developers took seriously), the notion of marking favorite folders, and the various options for viewing pictures (picview or thumbnail).
Anyway, good luck, perhaps this will improve further and hopefully some others will learn from some of the very nice features you've put in this program.

Hey tene,
There are some nice things in here, but it needs some modifications before it can compete with A_C's S2V.
The purpose is not to compete with S2V, if you prefer S2V, use it!
First of all, I find the kinetic scrolling extremely annoying. Why have you made it so that we have to hold down for a second before a swipe gesture will register? Is this modifiable? I found the PocketCM scrolling much more practical and finger-friendly.
This is gesture, I don't like gesture for this kind of thing, I prefer the way it is: direct reaction to scroll, what I try to achieve is something that give the feeling of speed. Again, it's more a matter of preference than "best way", and again, if another app is doing exactly what you need, use it and support his developer!
Secondly, I still maintain that the way you have the folder view set up now is cumbersome at best. You should look at A_C's program for how a well-thought-out folder system can be implemented.
Form what I understand, It's a tree browser, again, for me it's a matter of preference, not "best way to do". People using the app to show picture to friend, will have enough with the favorite option. Showing a browsing interface works well if you know where your pictures are, if you don't, seeing the folder containing picture directly works better.
Thirdly, being able to move down the folder list using the sidebar would be nice for people who have several hundred picture folders (takes a really long time to manually scroll down those). Of course, as I already mentioned, I think the entire folder system is a very bad idea anyway, so this is just another example of why it's impractical.
Or why you shouldn't have thousand of folder on your device? :p
Why not testing it with your own theme? Showing/hiding control could be nice, but more as a "hide when inactive for a given amount of time" than the "tap", "tap", "missed again", approach. (and again it's a matter of preference)
I agree with you for the sending/delete/rotate/set as contact picture/etc.. it should appear in future release. For the zoom, I'm not sure how it could be useful and fast, remember I have a 200Mhz device, and speed is the most important feature to me. I don't like the thing you see in the HTC album viewer, it's imho, too hard to get right, I don't like showing complex interface, the best would be an iphone "pinch" approach, but the hardware doesn't allow it.

Wow... this is a very nice app. It's starting to look like the success of your CM and Keyboard, great work!
I will have to agree with previous posters regarding folder system though... with many apps installed that support skinning, believe me, I have a lot of image-folders, not to mention the backup theme-folders on my storage card. I would prefer a simple "folder select" option, with a "Recursive" checkbox... that way you can select the top folder if you prefer and have the app find all folders, or be a bit more specific if you have all your pics organized somewhere... but I can also understand that you need to make this app your way, and you're doing great.
How about black background though? White bg while going through the pics just doesn't seem estetically right...
Can't wait for further development!

Tene, great application. I've been following your PocketCM Framework for a while now. I assume for future release you plan on implementing a lot of cool features. Though I'm crippled with a 200mhz device. So showing someone a picture I've recently taken takes a long time for it to load through, especially when you have 70+ images. I've noticed VITO Eyephoto manages to cache the images in a separate folder, so you just need to refresh once. Do you have any plans for this type of feature? Also I've never looked through the settings file but is it possible to change the Flo orientation to be landscape? Regular seems to be rather small for palm devices unless you have a massive screen like the iphone.

Also I've never looked through the settings file but is it possible to change the Flo orientation to be landscape? Regular seems to be rather small for palm devices unless you have a massive screen like the iphone.
Just rotate your screen, it should be landscape.
For image caching, I'm thinking about it, but I would like to implement it as something more generic, that would benefit PocketCM Contact as well. Stay tuned.

Hey tene,
really good work with your image viewer.
Could you or anybody else (i can't programm) make an mp3 player with that flow function? Or would it be possible to use the Flow of Image viewer for showing Album cover from Mort Player?

The issue here is the performance, playing mp3 require lot of CPU, the flow use also lot of CPU (actually, it's fluid because it use as much CPU as possible). So it's not possible to get both with decent performance.
You can already try playing a mp3 while using imageviewer, you'll see that the app is a lot slower, or that your mp3 is starting to glitch.

+ 1 for Sp1ce.
Image caching would be so great because with my 582 photos in the folder, it takes ages to load.
Otherwise, this is the best photo viewer i've ever seen, the most reactive, much better than the HTC album or the VITO wiewer.
So thx so much for your work =)

EDIT : is there a way to configure it, to make the last taken photos first in the list, like in HTC album.. thx

S2P already uses the "CoverFlow" effect to show your album covers.

tene,
Thank you for another great app that just keeps getting better. Do you plan to include the ability to send pictures by mms using your app in a future release?
I will be using your app as my picture viewer but would love to also be able to send the pictures straight from your viewer.

All this program now needs is the ability to delete & send as a sms. Great program keep programming. Cheers :D
Please tell me if im wrong as I dont have a wm phone yet. it looks like from the screen shot you can see about 9 picture thumbnails can the thumbnails be a bit smaller so that you get a 4 x 4 grid or 3 x 4 (as most photos are in landscape?) this would be easier if you have a lot of pictures in the folder. thanks

Tene great app once again, I think the only things that should be added are:
The ability to "tap and hold" on a picture to bring up a sub menu to do the following...
1. Rotate the selected picture
2. Send Selected picture via E-Mail/MMS (email is my only option, damn sprint)
3. Cut/Copy/Delete selected picture
4. Possibly ability to set as background/contact photo
This app is great though, Ive always hated the default picture viewer

Fantastic thanks, the only this is 100% of pictures on my phone are from the camera & 90% are in landscape so the program turns them -90° can the thumbnails & flow be either in landscape or square thumbnails. Thanks :D

I agree. It would be nice if we could use gestures to turn picture and have them save as such on the phone, so the next time IV is started the picture will show in the way you have it saved.

This version is really nice. Just a few suggestions:
1) It'll be better if users can define where the cache is. Currently it's under root on storage card, but I'd prefer more like under "storage card\temp".
2) The file structure explorer will be nice because I have too many program folders that have pictures in there. It literally took me 2 minutes for me to dig out the folder that I keep all my baby's pictures, and of course I labeled it with favorites afterwards. It'll be nicer if I can just navigate to that folder and then mark it as favorite.
3) Full screen view. Even though the taskbar is transparent, it'll still be better if we look at the picture in full view, taskbar can auto hide. And if user needs to take any action, one tap on the screen and those will show up.
Keep up the great work!

Yeah, I just realized the program was conflicting with FTouchSL. Made an exception for it and it's soooo much smoother and more responsive. So never mind on that point. It's very smooth.

it also would be nice if the program remember the last folder that viewed
and an gesture option to change to landscape mode
