View Full Version : pim.vol has the info in it (hexedit), but can't restore it to phone.

I've had a catastrophe where I made the mistake of removing "sync profiles", not knowing that this is code for "erase your contacts from view". This is on an HTC Tornado, WM6.
I've tried everything, but I cannot get the phone to recognize the contacts any more. Everything is blank. Yet, my pim.vol (by hexediting) has the contact info in there - i can see it!
I've tried renaming /pim.vol and copying the old one over it, waiting, then soft resetting. I've tried repeating the above after a hard reset.
Why is this happening? How do I fix it?
Are there cmd line tools to simply parse the contents of my pim.vol so I can reenter by hand?

i use resco explorer to replace pim.vol from the ppc, then reset and everything is ok

That doesn't really work. In WM6 it just freaks out on boot and causes the phone to re-init itself.
This is an utter nightmare, and makes me actually viscerally hate microsoft for building software like this. The genesis of this is that outlook simply would not work (and still doesn't, despite about 5 hours of searching/attempting to fix/reinstalling). So, I give up and try to sync with another laptop. I'm informed I have too many sync profiles, and you know the rest.
This is nothing short of ridiculous. I asked questions on a microsoft-monitored WM forum, and all I get back was some blurb about "pimbackup" and "managedpoom". The former would be great if I could get to my contacts, and the latter if I felt like writing a full application in C# with the sole purpose of extracting my contacts from a pim.vol, but meanwhile I'm screwed.
Thanks M$. I'm going Symbian/Linux in the future.

It works, after copy you should go back and delete the first pim.vol (the smaller one), after that reset, and all will be ok.

I don't know why; maybe I'm more determined now, but it did indeed restore it to its former state this time. I'd changed the ROM image to a newer WM6 one, too. Maybe that helped.
Thanks.
