I welcome the removal of wares by the moderator above. Unfortunately his enthusiasm went overboard with subsequent comments about poor people  I don't believe this forum is only for the "RICH" because I consider myself poor, and have been here a long time and owned many of these exclusive devices for the "rich".
I think that comment is not neccessary when you are correcting a bad situation. Let us stick to what we are doing here and leave our personal prejudices behind.:(

You are so right. Those dictators can't be that nefarious. After all, they have to feed all those women once they are "acquired."

I'm in trouble again I see. No offence meant and apologies for any caused.
As for "twisted" - others must decide!
That's my problem you see, I find humor a better tool for getting points across without causing offence or appearing dictatorial. However, humor can be misunderstood - is this funny:

Is there a specific version of maps for TomTom that work? Their site currently doesn't seem to be selling maps alone, so was wondering if any SD card with TomTom maps will work (I assume you would transfer them over to a microSD card).

Version 6 maps work fine. You add the maps to your SD card in a folder with a title given by tomtom (eg GB_Plus_Major_Maps_of_Europe). This folder is normally in the root of directory of the SD card. You would not normally have an SD card with tomtom maps alone on it as that would mean swapping in and out SD cards when you wanted to use tomtom.

Well, looks like the HTC ROM does not have TomTom as some people thought? You can sometimes get just the SD card with maps on Ebay fairly cheap so I was hoping I might be able to do that, rather than having to pay $120+ for the software and maps...plus the additional cost of a microSD card to hold them (how much space do they need?)
I'm basically looking for a fairly low-cost way to use the GPS on the device. I already have GPS nav in my car so I wouldn't need it very often, but it's nice to have when you travel or are in someone else's car. I may just end up seeing if I can use AT&T's service, turning it on and off as needed. But that would probably be a last resort.

google maps, if you don't mind data costs. I also hear that you can find lots of pirated material on the interweb. Such brand names as Igo and TomTom are easily found, often cracked and ready to install, if you can swallow your morals long enough to wait for the download to finish...
Seriously, we are all adults here. Seek and ye shall find... (i.e. use some sort of search engine)
take this link for example http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&newwindow=1&safe=off&q=+gps+software+ppc+torrent

No you are right, Tomtom is not in any of the ROMs it came on a CD (not installed), and even then not all areas of the world got Tomtom on the CD.
You would easily get the maps you use on an SD card alongside your other stuff. I have a backup SD I used to use which is only 1Gb and I had tons of apps a few photos various odds and ends and Tomtom GB maps plus major roads of western Europe.

Okay, anything under 2 gig would be quite reasonable. Oh well, maybe I'll get lucky and find a cheap copy somewhere. I'd rather not use warez, I'm a software author myself, and morally don't care for stealing just because you don't want to pay what they are charging.

Well 99.9999999% of those eBay "cheap copies" are warez - just so you know.

Not at all true, yes, there is occasionally warez on Ebay, but it's hardly at that level. I've shopped on ebay for a LONG time and only twice have I gotten warez copies of software (and got a refund on my money on both!) It's usually pretty easy to spot the fakes if you are a savvy buyer.

The thing is that even if you get original disks it's probably illegal since it is likely to have been installed by someone else already. With some software you are not even supposed to instal it more than once yourself to more than one device. Beware software like tomtom that is capable of establishing data connections and knows your GPS position and other data.
Not that this applies to you, but those who install tomtom warez are running at least a theoretical risk that the software is capable of sending your tel. number to tomtom. In addition, it is obviously warez since any software that is cracked and using the same password (also applies to software purchased from ebay that other folk have installed) can easily be identified as in breach of terms as it will be logged against several tel. nos. and simultaneous use in different GPS locations and all using the same access code. This is especially true for anyone signing up to the likes of tomtom traffic using such software.

My comment was specific to TomTom - AFAIK there are *NO* legal copies of TomTom distributed on SD card for instance. I agree it's often easy to spot the fakes - but that doesn't change them being on there, which was my point.

Understood. My inquiry about the maps on SD card assumed that the ROM had TomTom on it....which apparently this version does not.
I've tried Google Maps but so far can't get them to work. That might be a good solution for me, if it would just connect.

Not sure I understand - TomTom app v6.03 can be downloaded from their website as long as you have TomTom HOME installed on your computer. TomTom licenses the maps so you have to buy those regardless of whether you have the "Taster" app or not....
The pirated maps and keygens are pretty readily available. One of my many gripes with TomTom is them not offering an evaluation/trial period. I do like the performance of TomTom, but the UI and functionality suffer greatly in comparison to Mapopolis. It sounds like iGuidance v4 may come closer to the Mapopolis model, and even TomTom v7 (or whatever they call it in the TTG720 etc) looks like a moderate improvement - d@mn shame Mapopolis threw in the towel.

AFAIK it is not possible to sign up to traffic without a key. If traffic is not installed, TomTom does not open your data connection at all. Therefore, not possible to get caught. But moot point, as you are totally right deleting warez from xda-dev. ROMs is a grey area IMHO, TomTom maps aren't.

What country are you in? Should be easy to find tomtom stockists.
and is google maps better by any chance?
It is technically against the terms of use to use google maps for "turn by turn" satnav.
Besides, unless you have flat rate data it would probably end up costing more.
I tried using the web-based satnav that comes with the Blackberry 8800 - it was horrific! If you took a wrong turn you had gone miles before it got you back on track.

Hhm, I would have never known that, who reads those terms anyway! :)
I was able to get Google Maps working, but I would say it definitely does not replace a true navigation system like TomTom. I personally need the ability to turn off toll roads (in many areas around here, it often uses them to save about 1 minute on your trip, so I like to toggle that on and off) and it also has no voice nav which is pretty essential unless someone else is driving.

Oh, I had no idea you could! That certainly is not readily available information.

Yeah, agreed. A trial period would really be useful, but I guess that might be hard to do if it's mainly the maps that they are selling, not the application. That's one of my issues though, I hate to spend that much and then decide I would rather use a dedicated GPS with a larger screen. I'm just not sure how well it will work for me on the small Kaiser screen.
It sounds like iGuidance v4 may come closer to the Mapopolis model, and even TomTom v7 (or whatever they call it in the TTG720 etc) looks like a moderate improvement - d@mn shame Mapopolis threw in the towel.
Indeed. I haven't seen much on iGuidance other than a few negative reviews, don't recall what they were for exactly, but that was enough to make me shy away.

Actually it is readily *available* it's just not terribly obvious :)
The DOWNLOAD button on the page below only works if you have TomTom HOME installed on your computer, and despite the dire warnings it downloads 6.03 (shown as 6.030 in some contexts) and that version has worked fine on a number of PDAs.
