Hi pof.

This is a great idea and I thank you for the instructions but I got to #6 and am so new to ROM building(virgin, in fact :o ) that I must ask....

In the htc rom tool do I leave all fields blank except for the splash screen entry? And where do I enter that? I assume that I type splash.nb into the splash1 field.

Else, do I fill in all of the fields such as country ID, version, IPL?

many thanks.

To change Splash Boot screen, made a picture 320x320 pixel 96dpi save it in .png and rename in welcomehead.96.png

Use Resco Explorer, copy, paste and replace the welcomehead.96.png in folder Windows, make a soft reset. :)

Since the image is in .png format is it safe to assume that we can NOT load an animated splash screen??.. Also does flashing via the steps in the first post accomplishes the same as replacing the welcomhead.96.png manually??

Thank you..

jadehawk: you are correct that the welcomehead.96.png is non-animated, if you create an animated .gif and rename it to .png it may work in some programs that read inside the file for the relevant code to know how to display it but most programs including the wm6 bootup hook will not display it how it should so don't bother :)

Just to clarify that the original post by pof is "THE ONLY WAY" at present to replace the splash screen on initial boot of the phone, the welcomehead.96.png usage is on windows boot (some people have a 3rd animated .gif in between the 2, but this doesn't work on all models even with the registry entries in place, i have tried on my T-Mobile).

hope that helps.

Great thank you for clearing that out.. for now I am just happy replacing the animated.gif file in the windows folder with something other than the HTC animated one.. I have tried to make my own ROM using the kaiser kitchen but so far It has never worked at least not like the really simple tutorials I have found here.. still waiting for a better tutorial with screenshots and all.. so far i will stick with the ones I get from here and use the sprite backup to restore the applications I want loaded in the ROM.. thank you

FYI !!!

just to be clear ...

people kept mixing up info as there are 2 splash screens total !!!

here's the boot order:

1/ Original BOOT UP splash ( HTC/AT&T logo Radio/Protocol version ...etc) -->> ( have to use Pof's "splashTool" and converts to nb* file )

2/ animated screen -->> uses an animated Gif that can be replaced in \Windows

3/ Windows Mobile splash screen/Logo -->> This one uses the "welcomehead.96.png" ... (Totally different then the 1st splash screen !!! )

Please stop mixing up the info as there are 2 splash screens in total !!!

I've done the steps of creating the image at 240x320 24bit bmp file. I've gone and did the nb image convert saving it to splash.nb. converted to the new format. I've done the htcrt to add the splash.nb to the ruu_signed.nbh with no other changes setting it for kaiser*, herm100 and nothing else for the *.nb files. none for all except splash. loaded it into phone with custom ruu and rebooted the phone after the flash and still nothing. I wouldn't be so concerned except that this is a company phone and I somehow got the deathstar ATT logo and can't get it off. what am I doing wrong in terms of trying to get this custom bmp on the phone for the original boot?

I tried flashing my own splash a while back and kept getting a blank white image as a splash. I created an image in photoshop, and saved it as a 24 bit bitmap. So far so good. Then I opened the bmp in nb_image_converter and converted it to a .nb file. I then opened up htcrt, and chose kaiser from the device drop-down. Leaving all fields (model ID, Country ID, version etc.) at their default values, I load the .nb file into the splash box and build the Ruu_Signed.nbh, choosing to pad the file with 0's. Everything seems to go well, but when I boot the phone, blank whiteness. Anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions? Thanks, Cheers.

I've been trying to figure out if this process will flash the whole ROM or just change the splash screen.

I've probably spent 3 days setting up my device after getting a new ROM and I don't want to go through that all over again (although I *really* want a custom splash screen!)

Edit: I have found in the CustomRUU thread (step 7 of this process) that this will not affect the whole ROM, just the splash screen - might be a good calming tip to add to the first post since it's so fundamental and fewer people would be scared to do it. :)

You can find instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1722152&postcount=27

The WAVFile key should be added as a string so you can specify the path to your startup sound.

The Volumn key can have any value - start with 50 to see if that is loud enough for you, then you can increase or decrease.

You don't need to update. DarkSimpson was kinda p'od when he didn't get any responses to device compatibility in January, so it may be that he took down the Internet updates portion. The tool works fine w/o Internet updates.

When I click on ROM builder I get "there is no devices to build ROM for exists in configuration file"
Apparently there's no config file in the folder, only "htcrt.exe" by itself. Then in the same tab I cannot pick anything from the "device drop down list" like it's grayed out and all other fields are blank..
Anyone has a working version that you've used that works with the at&t tilt?

Only thing I still don't know how to do is to make the animated splash work. This post is good but I'll do some more reading. So far I'm able to change the first splash and the 3rd screen? "welcomehead.96.png" screen. The animated one suppose to go in between but I'm not sure how to make it work.
I already checked "animated.gif" in /windows and "Startup_sounds.wav" in /windows and settings in registry are correct. Well it's not a problem I'll try some more.

It all depends on if the rom has the drivers for the animation. If not, its a waste of time. From what I have learned and seen, it seems as though the animation drivers have to be cooked in.

I'm asking pof or alltheway or someone who can solve my problem to help me in changing the splashscreen.
Just to be clear, I'm talking about the 1st splash.

What I've done is what exactly pof has said in his guide.

I've created an image (BMP 24 bit) in 240x320 format (which is this the file lamp.zip in attachment).

I've converted it with nb_image_converter and obtained a .nb file (lamb.nb.zip), which I have converted into a .nbh file with HTC ROM Tool (lamp.nbh.zip).

At the end, I've flashed this nbh file with CustomRUU without any problem.

What I've obtained is the image I put in attachment, but with a black band at the bottom (in correspodance with the 3 red lines of radio and protocol version).
It's something like this:

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/8854/fake1rx4.jpg

What happened? Where was I wrong?

So I decided to flash an image from allthe way, the AT&T splash screen posted at page 5.

What I obtain now is correct!!!!! Whyyy???
So I tried again to flash mine, but now I have another problem. The AT&T logo seems to stay on the background.
I have something like this:

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/9504/fake2tq5.jpg

where the blue backgroung is the AT&T splashscreen.

Can u guys tell me where I'm wrong?

I'm pretty sure I'm close to the solution, but I can't see it.

Thank u very much!

See ya

Ok, here's what I did. I d/l all of your files and tried to use yours and ended w/ the same result as you. I also noticed that when I tried to create an nbh file using your nb file I got an error stating the nb was undersized. So, what I did was took your bmp file and started over. I also used the splash tool program to make it up to date w/ the latest HTCRT. I alos attached the file I created using your bmp and it flashed flawless for me. PM me if you have any questions. I also included the splash tool in the zip file in case you didn't have it already.

Ok, thanks for that p1tater. Now a little unsure about next step as I only want to change the splash. I have created splash.nbh in the same folder as the RUU. When I come to update it tells me I have Schaps and it will be updated to 1.00.000.0 which was the version number of the htcrt program. Do I click next ??

P1Tater
3rd April 2008, 03:41 PM
ok, first in the htcrt.
1. go to rom builder tab
2. under device, choose kaiser
3. at the right, under the splash option, click ... and locate the nb file u created.
4. click build.

then this will create the nbh file you need. once u locate the nbh file it creates, place it in the same folder as the KaiserCustomRUU.exe file and place the new nbh file in the same folder as the KaiserCustomRUU.exe. then flash away.

Search is your friend :)

Rename any animated gif to "animated.gif"(no quotes). sized to 240wx320h or 320x320(if you ever boot landscape) and drop it into the windows folder with total comander or resco. Allow overwrite.

Is there anyway to just delete the first splash screen, or can it only be replaced? I flashed the TNT ROM, and then Dutty's (with Hard Resets after each), and now have the following:

1st Splash: TNT
2nd Animated: HTC
3rd Splash: Dutty

I'd be happy just deleting the 1st splash if possible, but it looks like most of what's been mentioned is only for replacing it....if it could be deleted would that improve boot time?

I'm guessing the 'workaround' would be to use the instructions in here and just create a solid black 320x240 image?

Thanks!

For those of you who are getting the vista "COMDLG32.OSX" error and can't find the file anywhere on there computer. Download this cab from microsoft
http://activex.microsoft.com/controls/vb6/comdlg32.cab
Extract both files into the same directory as nb_image_converter.exe.:)

I was getting the "COMDLG32.OSX" error on Vista - this worked a treat:cool:

I've been trying to figure out if this process will flash the whole ROM or just change the splash screen.

I've probably spent 3 days setting up my device after getting a new ROM and I don't want to go through that all over again (although I *really* want a custom splash screen!)

Edit: I have found in the CustomRUU thread (step 7 of this process) that this will not affect the whole ROM, just the splash screen - might be a good calming tip to add to the first post since it's so fundamental and fewer people would be scared to do it. :)

Instructions for flashing custom splash screens on HTC Kaiser:

1. Install HardSPL.
2. Create a BMP file in paint, size must be 240x320, save it as BMP 24bit.
3. Download SplashTool
4. Load your BMP on nb_image_converter (included in SplashTool's zip) and save it as splash.nb
5. Open SplashTool.exe and convert splash.nb to new format.
6. Pack the resulting splash.nb into a NBH file using htc rom tool.
7. Flash your cusotm NBH using CustomRUU - NB this will not affect the whole ROM, just the splash screen.

Enjoy your new splash screen!

I agree with ninodelsol if Pof could change his user guide to read something like the above to calm nerves for all the inexperienced noobs who are flashing their Splash screens for the first time.
I backed out of doing step 7 twice before giving it a go for the first time.

Anyway thanks for Pof posting a great thread

I have the same issue here just with Logo from another Provider.
Is there a Solution out there?

I think the only way around this is to use the same BMP image to create the 1st NBH Bootup splash and the second "welcomehead.96.png"
I've done this on my Kaiser which transistions pretty much seemlessly from one to other giving the affect of just one image.
I don't have an animated gif which seems quicker on boot up but not much

Hope this helps

Did you actually download the file? It's an .ini file that works with the .exe

Unzip the file that I attached into the same folder as the .exe file that you downloaded from the first post, and then try running it again.

If you aren't going to bother to read and make a little effort, I don't see the point in taking time to help.

Ignore this.....plonker just started over going thru the thread......starting over agin ;-)

HI, I have my splash.nb file and am trying to run the htc rom tool. When I clcick the L buuton it wants me to select a project file which I do not have?

Is it a case that I have to use the htc rom tool to slice my splash.nb file into an existing .nbh file and then flash my device with it?

So I cannot just change the splash? I have to wipe the entire device?

I have copied the file renamed to .png into my widows folder on the device as mention in this thread and checked it is there which it is and have reset the device but all I get is a black screen then the radio numbers etc, then the htc animated log, then windows 6.1 green screen and lastly my today screen.

use the htc tool select first option which is build select your device from scroll down menu and then select the nb file from right drop menu infornt of splash.

then go down and press on the build button not the L

then u have ur nbh file, now copy nbh file and paste ina folder with customruu file and flash it. P.S. u will not lose anything on OS like installed apps...etc

First off, there is no pw on my zip files. Somehow your d/l is corrupted.

Anyways you can go HERE (http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/support_dll.phtml?dllname=COMDLG32.OCX) or HERE (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/comdlg32.htm) to get that file. I tried them both and they do work.

After you extract ocx files to sys32, you need to input command. For people constantly get error message about error 0x8002801c, you can see this page for solution:

I successfully made and installed a new boot screen! Had to run the JumpSPL1.56-KAIS to get the HardSPL installed.

After rebooting with my new boot screen - I did the boot loader just to check and I still have the olipof screen. I understand that I need to reinstall the original ROM to get rid of that but here is my question:

If I do - will it over-write the new boot screen I just created?

BTW - instructions were great and any help on this issue is greatly appreciated!

This is what I use on my Kaiser:
StartUpSound.wav (an earlier Vista startup, louder and better sounding than the one that ships with Vista)
animated.gif(htc black'n'white with animated green logo)
welcomehead.96.png (non-animated htc logo same as above, with Windows Mobile 6.1 on top and green TyTN II at the bottom)

boot sequence:
rom splash (mine is the "BIOS") --->
--> animated splash (animated.gif) --->
---> static splash end (welcomehead.96.png)

IMHO it looks great with any black/dark themes ;)

video preview here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngSTTdzRzDw&fmt=18

or just the welcomehead file (my contribution):
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/4369/welcomehead96by888jb1.png

(all set with Schaps' advanced config, there is no need for KaiserCustomRUU)

(note: on my Kaiser sound volume cannot be kept at default 0 (zero, which is max), because any startup sound is so distorted it sounds more like a loud noise. Changing value to 1 does the trick.)

Needing some help to change the 2nd splash screen.

I've already made some searches inside the forum but could not find more help, just people talking about changing some registry keys. I'm trying to figure out how to access those keys.

Hi Guys,

Want to congratulate everybody for the nice work being done here!!
Please forgive if the solution was clarified elsewhere, but I searched hours and saw that this is the best thread to post this question.

Recently I replaced my Trynity for a Kaiser and since my Kaiser came locked by the Brazilian provider “Claro” I searched XDA developers to unlock and customize my device as I did with my Trynity.
I CID unlocked my device with HARD-SPL v1 by Olipof and since my phone came with wm6 and there wasn’t any radio 1.27.15.21 available to reflash on the same OS, I decided to unlock using Kaiser Unlocker by Olipro after flashing Dutty’s Hybrid V2 to upgrade to wm6.1. The procedure worked great and the phone is okay, just had to reflash radio because after ulocking it there was no sound on external speakers.
After that I decided to install L26 Kaiser Diamond V10 and, apart from loving it, I decided to try also the New Dutty’s Diamont V1.

So far no issues, however the problems is that after all those ROM’s When I start my phone I have L-26 Diamont Avatar logo followed by the Brazilian provider Logo (The one where appears the radio versions, etc) followed by dutty’s splash screens. I tried to replace the welcomehead.96 file but I only added anoter screen after dutty’s.
When I install a new Rom it shouldn’t erase the previous ones?
I tried to use the HTC ROM Tool but I keep getting the message “there is no devices to build ROM for exists in configuration file!”
What would be the best way of removing all of those splash screen's on my device? I want to keep only the one from the author.

Thank’s in advance for any clarifications.

Cheers

Those are most likely
\Windows\animated.gif
\Windows\welcomehead.96.png
replace or remove them
Could use Schaps Adv.Config to disable them as well (or use registry, same for operator logos)

"smart mobility" probly is a splash screen (in the ROM) if so you can't remove it with Total Commander. All other ones are either static or animated pictures located in \Windows

Hi guys,

Thanks for the ideas, but no luck!!
Sorry for the late reply but I don't check every time.
Some answers first.
My animated.gif on windows folder is the Dutty's animation included in the rom. I don't have problems with this one.
The welcomehead.96 is the windows mobile 6.1 green screen included in the room. I also don't have problems with this one.
I used the HTC rom tool and made a splash screen with the eye of Sauron and flashed it.
So, my first screen is the one that I made (Eye of Sauron) and included with the room tool (htcrt - Thanks to DarkSimpson). After this I have the operator logo (from the operator Claro where apears the radio rom, etc.) followed by the animated.gif and welcomehead.96 described above.
I tried everething so far but I can't get rid of the operators logo. If someone have any other suggestion I will appreciate.

Thanks anyway.

I tried everething so far but I can't get rid of the operators logo. If someone have any other suggestion I will appreciate.

Thanks anyway.

edit:

I just realized something.
"After this I have the operator logo (from the operator Claro where apears the radio rom, etc.)"
Why you didn't say so earlier ;-)
Obviously you have TWO splashes in the ROM (since the Radio version etc is displayed on *that* second operator's screen, it is in the ROM too).
Using HTC ROM Image Editor (htcRIE) you can remove second splash, but I don't know how to remove it from a 'live' ROM on the phone, without dumping it first.
Maybe someone else knows how to do it easiest way (without dumping)

I've tried both ways in an attempt to change my splash screen. The copy and move method doesn't change it at all and I get an error message "(ERROR [240]:FILE OPEN) The update utility can not open the requested file. Please check your update utility." when I make my own nbh file and run custom ruu...Any suggestions?

Thanks for the ideia -888-

I don´t known if I will have the guts to try this new procedure.

Some questions.
When I flashed Duty´s room shouldn´t that erase everything else?
When I flashed my own splash screen this should´t erase any other splash screens before ROM?
What dow you mean as live ROM?

Cheers

If the ROM you are flashing phone with has the boot splash, it will overwrite the boot splash on the phone. So it depends, not all custom ROMs include boot splash (to explain in better: just think of the boot splash as some sort of "separate ROM").

What dow you mean as live ROM?
"live" ROM = the ROM that's already installed on your phone

Hi.

If there is a sort of "bootsplash ROM-ish-ROM" wouldn't it be possible to make a new, own "bootsplash-ROM-ish-ROM" without the operatorlogo but a picture-whatever of own choice and solve the problem? :)

I might not have been clear enough, so I'll give it another try.
Way back in post #110 in this thread, I showed my "TyTNII Splash Party", and asked if anyone had a solution, how to remove the operatorlogo (picture 2+3 taken from left in that picture) from the boot sequence. I may have misread or misunderstood your answer, since I thought you meant it in deed was possible to remove the operatorlogo, by flashing the "separate ROM" you mentioned.
If I misunderstood then I'm sorry.
If I understood and it is possible, please enligthen me. ;)

Yep, I have done a lot of flashing and even more reading a lot of threads about a lot of things in this excelent forum.

I hope someone can help. :)

I thought I answer this before (to you or someone else)...
IIRC you have 2 boot splashes, and bunch of various splash screen afterwards, right? As I said, everything else except for boot splash(es) are just files in your \Windows folder, and you can delete them, or at least disable them in registry. Only the boot splash(es) that start from separate ROM memory are "invisible" to you on the phone. Those boot splashes you need to remove from ROM file, and by ROM file I mean the .nbh file or ROM dump, not the ROM thats in the phone.
Dump your ROM, cook it again without the splashes.
If cooking is too complicated, you can overwrite the first boot splash easily by creating your own splash, but to create your own 2nd boot splash (to overwrite it on your phone) I'm not sure will it work because I never did it myself. If you use older version of HTCRT it has up to 3 splashes option (while later HTCRT has only 1 splash option).
If you need more details or have more questions use search, because I'm a n00b myself and all the info I just wrote is nothing new, all of it I read in this same forum. (I started exactly from removing operator's splash few months ago on my first kaiser). So do your own reading.
HTH & good luck.

Instructions for flashing custom splash screens on HTC Kaiser:

1. Install HardSPL (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679).
2. Create a BMP file in paint, size must be 240x320, save it as BMP 24bit.
3. Download SplashTool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334904)
4. Load your BMP on nb_image_converter (included in SplashTool's zip) and save it as splash.nb
5. Open SplashTool.exe and convert splash.nb to new format.
6. Pack the resulting splash.nb into a NBH file using htc rom tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311909).
7. Flash your cusotm NBH using CustomRUU (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334890).

Enjoy your new splash screen! :D

Splash screen, you cannot but you create a blank screen image,
PNG (welcomehead) - just delete the file, i guess ;)

Google for nbhextract utility or HTC Rom Image Editor, and use it to extract splash.nbh image.

are you sure that the rom had the slash image in it? cause sometimes the rom includes splash, rom and radio, or either without radio. recently cookers only posting the rom image only. In case that you're sure that the rom included splash image, then it is possibly cannot be dumped due to protection installed.

here is the rom with the splash image included;

you need to click as indicated picture below (red arrow) and see whether you have splash.nb at the right column view. If it's there, pick it and click "save selected file" button (green arrow). Then you got splash.nb file.

You're going to need HTC Rom Tool to build an nbh file in order to be flashed separately. Don't do it if you are not sure what you are doing ;)
