View Full Version : Tilt keyboard fix - Download here

7th October 2007, 05:28 AM
I've updated the Tilt keyboard fix to address the apparent issue with the Smartdialer keys also being incorrectly mapped when flashing a non AT&T ROM onto the Tilt. This will also fix the FN character issues being incorrectly mapped too.

This was tested on a Tilt flashed with the (current) HTC ROM and worked perfectly.

Install -> Soft Reset

Enjoy! :)

IMPORTANT:

Some people have reported that this cab didn't fix their Smartdialer issue. It's important that you uninstall the older cab that was posted here (if you even installed it), then soft reset. Then install the new one and soft reset one more time. That should do it.

Do not unzip/decompress this .cab file on your desktop and move the files over to your device. It won't work. You need to copy the .cab (as is) onto your device and tap to install.

Remove the registry key and soft-reset.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\KEYBD]
"CWSLayout"=dword:00000001

You "should" be able to just navigate to:

HKLM\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\KEYBD and delete CWSLayout, then soft-reset.

EDIT: Dang, Pof beat me to it. :)

This was created by myself and sirsycho. This will fix the FN character issues when flashing a non-ATT carrier ROM on the Tilt.

Install -> Soft Reset

Enjoy!

What exactly does it do?

Thanks,

When you flash the HTC ROM (or any non-ATT ROM) onto the ATT Tilt, some of the alternate (FN) characters on the keyboard are mapped incorrectly. This fixes that.

oh ok - thanks. Is that a registry update?

Was curious becuase i couldn't find and "...\qwerty" entries in the registry.

It is a registry entry. I was originally looking for the same "qwerty" entry (like in the 8525), but instead the following was the culprit:

[HKLM\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\KEYBD]
create - CWSLayout - value (1)

ahhh - i have a feeling there will be many registry differences from 8525 to 8925....

I have a bit of an issue when on phone mode. This fixes the FN issue, but doesn't fix the caps issue when on the phone mode. I'm trying to search for a name and the W is a Q, T is a V, there is no S, D is a F, and so on...

Fn Mappings are all wrong, and this fix for the Tilt does not work :( Well, the mappings change, but it is still wrong...

Anyone have any idea on how to fix it?

Found it! For those with HTC TyTn II with Norwegian char set on the keyboard, don't install this patch! If you already have, just remove the registry setting it added.

Use a registry editor like PHM Registry Editor and change the following:
Hardware\Devicemap\Keybd\CurLang to 1044

This should work on other Kaiser models too but you will have to find the correct CurLang setting either by guessing, or like I did, I was lucky enough to have a friend who wanted me to flash his phone and I found the setting in his registry before flashing.

I was just referring to a previous cab that I posted in this thread. It didn't include the smartdialer fix. So, if you didn't install the older Tilt Keyboard Fix that was first posted, there's nothing to uninstall or edit.

It sounds like you're decompressing the .cab on your desktop and moving the files over to your Tilt. Don't do that. Move the .cab over as-is and tap it to install, once on the device.

I have the opposite issue: I have HTC and flashed with ATT ROM
Now key mapping is uncorrect, but your cab cannot work, since it is done for ATT devices!

I did the upgrade to ATT ROM simply because I needed Radio 1.12.14 to fix the known problem of "kaiser freezing after a call"

Now the freezing problem is gone! I am happy.

But I now have a HTC device and ATT ROM. The mapping of keys is uncorrect:

I have tried your cab: it does not improve/

I have tried to tweak the registry, implementing the french key mapping, the key English mapping, the Chinese key mapping, which I found in another thread.

Even after resetting Kaiser KEEPS the current mapping: when I press FN+Q I receive a "!" instead of "@"
Viceversa, if I press FN+W I receive a "@" instead of "!"

If I press FN+Sym I CANNOT receive the symbol list, as before upgrade!

Please help

I don't know if this has been covered cerning the Fn button. But when I used to press the Fn + Sym tab, I could get the symbols that I needed. Now, it just brings up the keyboard.

If the keyboard fix cab was supposed to fix that, I was unsuccessful. If I'm doing something wrong or accidentally disabled the function somehow, would someone please help me get back on track?

First, I would like to say I already search for this but came up empty. My question is, I want to get the Tilt but I do not want to sign up for the $39 data plan to use free Wifi. If I load the OEM Rom on this phone will it enable me to access free Wife where ever it is available without signing up for a data plan from AT&T?

First off, why ask that question in this thread? It has nothing to do with the keyboard fix.

Secondly, You don't need to flash you phone so it will only use WiFi and not at&t. Disable the data connection and you'll be fine.

Couple of things: you have to copy the fix in a folder in your device. Then with the file explorer, find it, and click on it (on your device, not on your PC). This will install the cab.

After that, you have to choose in Advanced Config or Kaiser Tweak, the appropriate keyboard layout for your device (i.e., Tilt, HTC, etc).

BTW, if you happen to have a Tilt, the keyboard will work fine with the exception of one thing: the Fn+Space combination won't work. Have been trying to get an answer but nobody has responded so far.

I got the same message. Probably bc' fix was written for WM 5.0.

There are a couple of small programs that allow you to easily/safely tweak your device by making changes to the registry.

I've attached Schap's Adavance Config. Copy it to your device just like you did with the fix. Run it. And go to Keyboard and then select the one that applies to your device layout.

Schap's has one of the best ROM's. I've only had problems with the keyboard. Other than that, it's very stable and smooth performance. Others have a different set of applications, but you can over time play with those, adding the ones you like.

Thanks to everyone for sharing in this thread. I now feel confident that, if I buy either a Tilt or a Kaiser, I can make it jump through pretty much any hoop!

My question is, what is the benefit of flashing a Tilt with a Kaiser ROM? (Is it necessary to flash the ROM in order to undisable HSDPA?)

I'm still deciding whether to get a Tilt or a Kaiser. The Kaisers are a bit more expensive at the moment. (Before anyone points out that a Tilt with a contract is relatively cheap, please note that I need the device unlocked for use on T-Mobile in the US and various carriers in Europe, all on their own SIMs, so I have to pay market prices to get an unlocked device).

Thanks,
-Jay

I'm having a weird problem when I type fast. Everything comes out is in order except for the space character. it comes one character too late.

You guys must be doing some weird stuff with the cab or loading it wrong. i loaded mine up into my tilt running duttys v3 and everything worked just fine.

Hello Gentlemen! Pardon my ignorance but im just new here. I recently obtained an AT&T Tilt and would like to flash the HTC Rom. Can you please assist me where will I get the best/most compatible HTC Rom for the Tilt? I will really appreciate if tou can post the link including the fix for the keyboard for easy downloading. I understand the keyboard for the Tilt has a different lay-out from the HTC TyTNII.

Incidentally, any idea if after flashing the HTC Rom the Tilt will now have now have the video call option normally found in the dial pad of an HTC TyTN II? I just noticed that the dial pad of Tilt has no video call option. I usually use the video call option of my Dopod 383pro here in the Philippines.

Thanks a lot in advance!

The upgrade went fine

But pressing 1 no longer gets me to VM. If I get a VM, I am able to get to VM by pressing the 'voicemail' prompt if get a voice message. Any idea how to fix this problem?

Another annoying problem is that my 'Contacts' are no longer available as an option to tie to a hard button. I had it mapped to the PTT button with the initial ROM.

Thanks

I cant get this cab to install. I move it to my device, click on it, and nothing happens. I tried downloading again, thought maybe the download got corrupted somehow, and same thing, no install screen comes up, no changes to my device, etc. Anyone else having a problem installing it?

Take a look at post 12/13 where they show what the cab does. You can do that yourself, directly working on the registry.

confirmed, the keyboard fix fixes the layout but kills one thing: the Fn+Space. When you install it, the Fn+Space combination stops working. That combination works before applying the fix.... I guess it's installing a layout that it's not 100% right.

To you who are trying to get the Norwegian keyboard to work, do this:

1: Open your fav register editor
2: Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\KEYBD\ "
3: Open "CurLang"
4: Change to decimal and enter 1044 as the value. (or you could try 414 in hexadesimal)

This works perfectly for me.
The FN+space is giving me a comma, the fn + wlan functions, aswell as the file explorer button :)

In original Russian TYTNII with Russian ROM this key is used to swich Latin characters to Cyrillic and back. Now when I press this key keyboard switches to Russian and spaces appear (tab works). I don't need this tab for this key. Can I fix this by modifying the registry ?

The HTC Rom's have a different keyboard layout than the Tilt, but the Fn+Space key combination works: it puts accents on letters, and cycles through characters. However, the layout is not 100% right, since many Fn keys are swapped (for example the "!" with the "@").

When you install the Tilt Keyboard Fix, all the keys show up in the right place but the Fn+Space combination disappears. Sounds like the Tilt keyboard is missing that one... It was working fine with my old Hermes, but on this one ATT must have screwed up.

There should be a way to modify the Tilt keyboard to add the Fn+Space... I'm just not smart enough to do it....

They are referring to a slightly different functionality. If you had a Hermes (8525) maybe you noticed that you could type a forward slash then press fn then space and it would swap to a back slash. Well, that applied to a bunch of other characters as well. I too miss that fn+space...

I will look into it.

Hi, I'm very thankful with your great work! I was on the verge of despising my Tilt because of this wrongly mapped keys of the keyboard, you're a real hero! heheheh

By the way, when I did a soft reset on my device, it was looking for an "Activator.EXE" file that can't be found or opened (?). I did a lot of soft reset this morning and this didn't occur, it is only after installing the Cab file. Please help.

It's not the same. When you type in spanish or french or other languages you're constantly using accents, and other characters like "ç". It's impossible to go to Symbols and get the character from there. The way the HTC keyboard works is that you press Fn+key and it changes. For example the c changes into a ç, and the a into an á. The Tilt keyboard layout just kills the feature. If you don't install it, keyboard is all screwed up on the Fn keys, but at least you have access to the Fn-Space combination.

I changed the registry manually (two keys mentioned bellow), soft reset and it worked.
As a "side effect" sms TO: popup list works now as well.

I have a problem, but to be honest, I'm not sure if it's because of the Tilt keyboard fix. The problem is that when you are typing a message and press space and then a character, if you don't pause before putting the character, the space will come late. I have been looking in the forum for a solution for the Tilt keyboard. Everytime I ask, someone usually responds pointing me to the Tilt Keyboard Fix cab.

However, installing that fix, results in the keyboard being mapped with the ATT layout, by enabling the CWS layout in the registry. This makes every key work as it should, but it kills the Fn+Space combination.

The Fn-Space key combination, typed after a character, changes it to others, as per what is defined in sym049.txt (or whatever symxxx.txt file you have in the windows directory).

For example, if you type an "a", press Fn+Space, you get an á, then à,â, etc. Same with all other characters. This, as you can imagine, is important for those that type in languages other than English, that require accents. And for those that want to use characters not in the keyboard often (like the Euro sign "€" or the british pound sign, "£", the ç, etc.).

I think the issue is with the CWS layout (CWS being Cingular/ATT). That layout doesn't have the Fn+Space in it. The Hermes keyboard had a blue "á" and "ü" written on the top left corner of the Space bar. The Tilt doesn't have those. In fact, if you install the original ATT Rom (no need for keyboard fix there), the Fn+Space combination doesn't work.

The only way I've seen to get Fn-Space back to life is NOT to use the CWS layout that comes from the ATT Keyboard Fix. Using any non ATT Rom will allow you to get Fn-Space, but at the cost of getting many of the other Fn keys mapped wrong. For example, the ! and the @ are swapped, the ; gives you a %, and so on.

Sounds like there should be a new keyboard layout that is 99% like the one resulting from the keybord fix (CWS layout) but that adds the Fn-Space combination to it.

Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem. It also makes my backspace key start with delete until i hit Fn+Delete. I had the _Alex_ TyTN II Keyboard Fix and that fixed the symbols, but not the lag. After adding the Disable xt9 cab it made my on-screen keyboard only type symbols and numbers unless I was on the stock keyboard. I uninstalled both and it stayed the same so I did a hard reset. Now I'm back to looking for a lag fix other than what I've tried.

I have this problem as well. It's not as bad if I don't install the fix, though at times it is still present. I can get past having to relearn symbol positions, but it would be nice to have a fix for the lag, as I'm unsure if it's just the keyboard fix causing it or a limitation of the tilt specific hardware.

Unfortunately, my happiness was short lived... I installed, and as I was expecting, all the Fn characters work perfect. All but one: the Fn+Space. So we're still unable to have the Tilt layout and the Fn+Space working at the same time. Sounds like the mapping of the keys needs to be adjusted to include that.

Install -> Soft Reset

Enjoy! :)

I realize it's 3 months later now, and maybe you've found a fix, but I don't see any fix in this thread . . . here is a very nice workaround, if you're willing to spend a few bucks for a small program called MagicKBLite - it allows you to assign up to 4 extra characters to each key, and cycle through them as you hold down a particular key.

Attached is the program, my 8925.lay keyboard layout, and instructions. You can try for 7 days, then purchase from http://www.mobiion.com/magikblite.html for $14.95 if you wish.

I have no affiliation with this company or reward for promoting it - I just use it myself and like how it works.

Thanks. Nobody had looked at this and nobody seems to care either. It's weird... I would think that there should be a quick fix related to overlaying a new layout. But I'm not knowledgeable enough to figure that out myself.

Well, I think it may actually be a hardware limitation of the Tilt as specified by AT&T. Just like they deleted the front cam. They may think us dumb ugly Americans just don't need to ever deal with another language, and their market for the Tilt is the good old US of A.

I think it's a software issue. I had it working but for that to happen, the layout needs to be different from the AT&T one. But that means most of the fn key combinations get screwed up.

Install -> Soft Reset

Enjoy! :)

Thank you very much and sorry for the question.... but how do I install those file on my Tilt?

This fix worked for all of the WM6.0 ROMs I used (and I love it by the way :)) but it's unfortunately not working for the WM6.1 no thrills ROM I installed a few weeks ago .

It looks like the registry value (CWSLAYOUT) gets created and data set to 1 but the wrong symbol is displayed when the FN key is depressed (e.g., FN + 1 should be ! but comes out as @).

Any ideas? The DriverName value is set to KbdNopAll.dll, curlang is 1033. Any help is appreciated.... if the keymap is stored as a string resource in the DLL I'm totally cool with manually fixing it then posting the fix...

Carrier is AT&T, I'm in the USA.

Sounds like you have a WM6.1 ROM and tried to turn on ClearType in Landscape mode, which is known not to work.

Try turning that feature off (probably in KaiserTweak or Advanced Config Utility).

I installed the keyboard fix, but I installed it to my storage card. It did not work, could it be because I did not install it to the device?

nice.. going thru the 19 pages right now.. can anyone verify that this fixes the keyboard on Dutty's 6.1 rom?

19 pages of reading or spending 30 seconds or trying out the cab? And dutty's roms are old at this point and not really supported. I'd recommend trying a newer rom if you are just entering the game.

Side note: can we get a mod to modify the title of this thread to mentioned it was last updated in 2007? I still use it, but every time I see this thread pop up saying [UPDATED], I get disappointed. not that it really needs updating....

well im at work so cant flash my rom at the moment..

And yea I am BRAND new to this, got the phone last night, flashed Dutty's on with little problems, only seeing the keyboard issue and the camera album is upside down. But now that you mention it i may look at these 6.5 roms, I am new like i said so what i am looking for is the ability to run youtube vids, touchflo, and possibly Ifonz. Everything else media-wise is pretty much good enough for me for now, and i will be getting TCPMP soon as i had it on my 650. On my 650 i also had a program called MobiTV that i could stream live tv channels, anything available like that for the Tilt?

They keyboard issue will happen with all (i believe) roms that didn't originate from AT&T. I haven't made the leap to 6.5. but try the ROM in my sig. That's my going recommendation. Very stable.

HI dears,
after you have installed on the kaiser a Registry Editor you can set the type of the keybord changing the value of:

HKLM/HARDWARE/DEVICEMAP/KEYBD.....CurLang

You have to put inside the value of the correct language of your keyboard. You can find it in this link:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/it-it/goglobal/bb895996(en-us).aspx

You have to save and the game will be done.

Changed the following registry values:

"CurLang "=dword:1049 (DEC)
2. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\MUI]
"CurLang "=dword:1049 (DEC)

where 1049 is your language code.

FN+Space doesn't switch to this layout, but Tab+Sym does.

p.s. soft reset required for changes to make effect

Hi guys,

I want the touch pad (graphical keyboard) to be disabled when I slide the real keyboard and to be active again when I close it. Does anybody know how to do that?

Reason: Say you surf to the google home page. Once you enter the text field the touch pad automaticaly pops up and covers most of my screen including the text field which I am typing into. If I were to use the actual keyboard why would I even want the touch pad to be active? Also, this would solve the visibility issue.

Thanks,

I'm honestly tired of searching a fix for my problem. I've seen a few people with similar problems but nothing helpful. Only the center buttons and the arrow key buttons in the outer and inner keyboard will work fine, the rest of them are like dead, unresponsive. Power button, camera and volume buttons work fine as well. The inner KB does light up when I press the arrow keys, or the center buttons in the outer KB.

This issue happened all of a sudden, all my keys were working perfectly fine, I didn't install any software at the time, I do remember the last one was the KB Speed increase which is basically a registry change, but nothing to do with key mapping or so.

After that happened I tried upgrading to shifu's WM6.5 v4.1 but it didn't change a thing.

Can some one help please? Thx,

Um, it sounds like a hardware problem, not a software problem... Sounds like you either had a wire come loose, a solder trace let go, or a keyboard fail. Since you say that lots of stuff is failed, I doubt it is a keyboard... unless i'm reading it wrong, and you're saying that ALL buttons work EXCEPT for some of the inner keyboard...

Yes,

QWERTY kb
Work: only arrow keys / it lights up fine when those keys are used
Don't work: the rest :(

Outer kb
Work:only navigation and enter buttons work / lights up fine only when those keys are used
Don't work: left and right softkeys, messaging, IE, green/red call buttons

What I'm wondering is why only the directional buttons work... my first guess would be that the cabling is the same for the entire KB, it is hard for me to believe that some cable can come loose by only using the phone, basically sitting in my pocket or at my desk.

Thanks for your help folks.

Update (and I hope some might help explaining why this workaround solved my problem)

All my keys are working now. I knew this didn't appear to be a HW issue. I did this and my problem was fixed:

1. Original configuration (as listed below in my signature): I had issues with my keyboard.
2. Executed KaiserUnlocker.exe http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835 to know the status of my SIM and CID. It flashed my radio to some sort of 1.70.iFlex (or so) version.
3. Next I checked the security status of my phone, everything is unlocked so I didn't commit any changes.
4. I started having issues with incoming and outgoing calls, I thought because of the radio had changed.
5. Flashed back to the original 1.70.19.09 radio.
6. Voila! all my keys are working now.

So, this is not a cabling issue or anything similar. If you have an idea of what could've caused this, please let me know, so that we can share it with the rest of folks in this forum as I've seen other people with the same issues.
