View Full Version : SDHC Cards? Still none the wiser?

I have searched on here and read the various threads on SDHC cards and I am still none the wiser
In the Wizard Accessories forum there is a 5-page thread about users experiences with what does and doesn't work - the problem is there is contradicting information. I thought I was getting somewhere with later units supporting SDHC and earlier ones not (serial numbers), however half way through the thread someone with an older Wizard says they have it working.....
Are there any difinitive answers to whether 4GB SDHC cards work in the Wizard, and if so does it need to be a G4, does it need to be manufactured after a certain date etc?
I have two Wizards (s/n: SZ602EE0xxxx and HT544EExxxx), both currently with 1GB SD cards (Danelec I think?). I am reluctant to buy any 4GB cards unless I know they are going to work.
Thanks
Andy

AFAIK some WM6 ROM with build .1921 includes drivers that should support SDHC cards but since I don't have a SDHC card on hand cannot test ...

I have already downloaded this but don't have a SDHC card to test it, and as I said I am reluctant to buy one if it won't work.......

ok to clarify this, (im going to get flame at least once for this) SDHC cards will only work with devices that have the drivers for SDHC cards. This does not have to do with the hardware but if we cant get the drivers to talk to the hardware there is no support. we have the right hardware but no drivers and if it was a hardware problem then SDHC cards would not be the same as a SD card.
And can someone test that rom (not hopping it works but it might)

The first page of theloon 7.2 ROM kitchen shows it working. I run this ROM, but I dont have a SDHC yet. I'll post there to see if anyone has had success.

I am desperately running out of SD card space and would like to now 'upgrade' to a 4GB (or bigger?) SDHC card. I would like some testemonials of users who have had sucess with SDHC cards and what Wizard version and ROM you are running.
As I said I am reluctant to just buy a SDHC card and see if it works as it will be a waste of money if it doesn't.

count me in :)
just bought a 2gb sd card for 25€ over here but i need more space ^^
transcend (http://www.transcend.nl) sells the fastest sd mini cards as far as i tested them..
from hardware point of view the wizard device can handle this SDHC cards
as they use the same slot and hardware a usb cardreader has..
its just a matter of drivers or maybe just a registrysetting..
my guess its a combination of a new driver with enhancements for SDHC
and some registrysettings...
knowing windows they probably allready implented it in OS at least in WM6
and it be just a question of finding the right driver with the right settings..

Read this! It is only a matter of drivers and reg settings. Someone has created a cab with appropriate drivers and reg entries for testing somewhere on the xda forum.

So you can confirm this works? That's all I want. There are LOTS of varying reports on SDHC cards working & not working. I don't want to buy one and then realise it doesn't work. It's all right posting drivers and links to MS updates but that doesn't confirm anything. I want hard evidence.....

• Support for Video over IP telephony calls :)
• Support for the Pocket Outlook Object Model (POOM) and ActiveSync in the VoIP Home Screen and VoIP Contacts applications
• Secure Digital (SD) bus driver that supports SDHC specification 2.00 functionality, such as Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) cards
Support for Extended File Allocation Table (ExFAT) and FAT32 on the x86 BIOS Loader, which provides access beyond 2 gigabytes (GB) of hard disk space.
this is probably the issue with ur 4gb card..
the bios of the wizard wont be able to acces beyond 2gb
but...
now that you have this 4gb card can you do us all a favor ?
here is the thing:
if u have a cardreader that reads the card on the pc just put it in the pc
otherwise put it in the wizard and start wm5torage and connect it as a
non-removable class and write enabled and start the thing and connect it to pc..
when connected goto computer and right click My Computer and choose manage.. in that window goto Disk Managment ..
in there you see this drive which is on the sd card, its shown as a drive
rightclick on the part next to it where it shows the volume on the drive
(it says Healty when correct and the driveletter it got assigned)
choose delete partition
now u have a empty flashdisk :)
format it in fat16 but.. :-> dont give it a name and set it to 2gb and do not assign a driveletter
now there is a space left of <1gb
format this too fat16 no name, no drive letter, no other stuff but plain format
now if all is correct and these two drives are there you can disconnect it.
unplug the cardreader (with the remove hardwarebutton in systray)
or if u got it in your wizard , shut down pc and take wizard out after it shut down
then release the wm5torage driver and close it and remove card and insert it
back again..
u can check for errors with pocket mechanic professional..
little warning though : do not do this with non branded fake 4gb cards as it
renders it useless probably..( these cards that are 2gb and reformated to hold 4gb)

it will work if someone can port wm6 r2 to the wizard
and i had it work with a 4gb sd mini card which wasnt SDHC
the site i bought it doesnt have them anymore ..
it seems it is an "out of specs" sd card hence there not sold here,
but maybe we can find a store that has these cards..
one more thought is that it maybe read the SDHC card as well if we
keep its volume space to a max of 2gb..
multiple volumes on a storage card works fine on a t-mobile stock rom
not tried it on others..
nevertheless ur right about the part that no-one is willing to buy something that doesnt work hence we need to test and try...

I have a miniSDHC 4gb card and have tried using it on the original wm5 Tmo rom with the sdhc.cab install and both the TNT1921 and TNT1437 roms with and without the sdhc.cab installed without any success.
I've tried the WMStorage trick but it doesnt work as the mda doesnt recognize that their is a card in the slot and only shows what is on the main memory of the device.
I do have two MDA's (gen3 US spec Tmobile MDA's) so i can spare one to due testing. if anyone has any ideas (roms and cabs that i can install) i would be happy to help.

that's right. I didn't buy the card for the wizard, I only tested it with the wizard. But apparently there is a hardware problem - I'm not completely sure that SD -> SDHC is a simple driver update, though it's *only* a different readout method (and FAT32 is working fine even with SD1.0)

If it didn't work then why don't you have to but a second card? If repartitioning didn't work then theoretically, you would still need to buy a card that is compatible with the device which is buying a second card. But if repartitioning to 2x 2gig partitions saved you the trouble of having to buy another card then wouldn't that mean that it DID work?

Is there a new applet in Settings called 'Storage Settings', this should have two radio buttons for selecting Enhanced Mode (SD/SDHC) and Standard Mode (SD Only). I have no idea if it works, I need more storage and I am just grasping at straws really

You need to update to the latest .NET which i did and then i ran the storage.exe

Clicked OK it said it had to reboot so did that and its still not working
I may have broken it though as before i ran this i couldnt access my SD Card or my SDHC card so im going to go back and try to make it find the SD Card and then try this option again

I thought I would install this and see what happens...
It all looks good - the Applet is there and it reboots when you switch between modes. However once it is installed you cannot access your SD card (SDHC or otherwise...) and it appears though nothing is inserted.
Uninstall it and lets hope HTC release a Wizard version of this update - unlikely I know but lets be optimistic

and why is that?
I haven t done all the reading i should, but AFAIK the difference is just an other way of adressing the memory, and there are no physical differences between the cards, like a different operating voltage. So it seems to me we are waiting for a good soul to write or adapt the drivers.

I bought 2 GB cards because I thought that was the max I could use in the Wizard, but now I am getting Voice Recorder errors and Messaging is not working, which is apparently related to the card because it works when I take it out. How do I format these cards so that they work with no problems?

In HTC webpage:
Support: Qtek 9100
What is the maximum SD card size compatible with my device?
For Win CE 2003 =>General for SDIO is 1GB.
For WM 5.0 => SD Card is 4GB and Mini-SD is 12GB

this thread is full of misinformation. if you guys really want to understand why then you need to understand SD. there are NO 4gb NON SDHC cards around. 2x2gb sd cards in a single package is still 2x2gb sd cards. thats how the device reads them. also there are no physical differences between the cards as previously mentioned, but the logic in the device that reads the cards is different. if it is not SDHC certified then it can not read the fat32 filesystem that the SDHC cards use. regular SD cards use fat12 or fat16. would you like more info? www.sdcard.org has all the proper info.
for the guy that talks about the info on the htc site, it is improperly posted by htc. they should have said PHYSICAL limitations exist. windows mobile 5 supports SDHC yes, but does the LOGIC on the device support it is the real question.the answer is no.

also for those that dont know, FAT16 has a size limit of 2gb. hence why the filesystem change.

When I format with the SDHC Panasonic formatter, it is reported by Windows as FAT16, not FAT32.

then its not formatting right. the filesystem has a maximum of 2gb. and its only able to use 2gb. there is no way to use anything larger. an sdhc card must be formatted in fat32 to use the full capacity. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/core/fncc_fil_blpd.mspx?mfr=true has the limits perfectly laid out.

Mine is a 2 GB card. It does not have the SDHC logo on it; just the SD logo.

Should I format it as FAT32 with Windows XP then? I am having issues with it:

You can try to format them in digital cameras.
I tried this but it's an old camera and it didn't format any more than "974 MB" of the 2 GB card. Windows then sees it as FAT file system with "974 MB = 1,021,968,384 bytes". My Wizard shows it as "974.63 MB".
If I then format with Windows XP Home, it will only format those 974 MB as either FAT or FAT32. It doesn't see any more, though Computer Management lists the unpartitioned space.
If I format with the Panasonic SDFormatter, it shows up as "FAT, 1.90 GB (2,044,329,984 bytes), cluster size 32768 Bytes", which is also what Windows says. Wizard says "1949.63 MB". Camera says "1.9 GB".
If I do the SDFormatter with size adjustment on, it says "FAT, 1.90 GB (2,043,346,944 Bytes)" same cluster, Windows is same. Wizard says "1948.69 MB". Phone says "1.9 GB".
<strikeout>(What does "size adjustment" do?)</strikeout> (Ok, I found the instruction manual, which explains that this sets it to a multiple of the cylinder size to maximize compatibility.)
If I then format it with Windows as FAT32, it shows up in Windows as "FAT32, 1.89 GB = 2,039,611,392 bytes". Wizard shows "1945.13 MB". Phone says "1.8 GB".
Again, the card does not say "SDHC"; it just says "SD". I have had problems with the Messaging and Voice Command features, apparently due to the SD card.
So which of these various formats should I use for this card? Which is the correct format for the card and/or the phone and/or the camera?

sorry for the late reply. for a 2gb card you should use FAT16. fat32 is incorrect for the 2gb cards with regards to compatibility. just use the panasonic sdformatter. it seems to do the job properly.

sorry for the late reply. for a 2gb card you should use FAT16.
I see now that FAT16 has a maximum size of 2.048 GB, so it should be enough. So when Windows XP says "format as FAT", it really means "FAT16", right?

compatibility with my camera or the wizard? Certainly you can format a 2 GB card with whatever format you want except FAT12.

you cant force hardware to do something it does not physically support. period.

dont bother if its JUST for this wannabe sdhc. the hardware itself cant address higher than 2gb.

while you can format it as you choose, for proper comatibility within devices, it should be formatted as fat16. fat12 was only for cards with a max of 512mb.
also the panasonic one, as for being for just SDHC cards im not sure. i thought i read that it could be used for all, but i could be mistsaken. if i am, i dont intend to spread bad info.

this is utter bullshit. i used to own a canon camera that was SDHC compatible. i purchased a 4gb SDHC class 6 card for it. the 4gb card would NOT be recognized by a regular SD reader. i tried and failed. so anyone that CLAIMS its possible is a fucking idiot. its not comptaible. there are internal differences that arent released to the public without signing an NDA with the SDA.

besides the dll files one needs a proper bootloader to adress the space beyond 2gb border.
i dont know where u get the idea that the hardware is not capable of reading
the 4gb cards.. you have any proof of this ? the interface is merely a serial attached device which got nothing to do with reading of the memory itself.
the bootloader should contain updated settings for the sdhc as well as the
corresponding driver and perhaps this settingstab..
whether there is a proper bootloader available which will do the trick is to question.

Purchased a topram 4gb card off ebay last week. I copied a 3.1gb file onto the card, verified it and deleted the file 5 times. The card is working flawlessly. I can scandisk it and it shows no errors. Have used it for a few days with no troubles. I have 3.5gb of files/music on it now and have been playing the music at work all week on it.
capacity 4,016,046,080 bytes 3.74gb reported in windows. Fat32 format. works fine in my wizard as well as my kodak z712 digital camera and sd card reader. the reader is not sdhc compatible if I use a sdhc card from my camera it won't read it.
I don't know if it is possible to get the sdhc cards working eventually or not but for now a 4gb card is available and is really not that expensive to try out.

Read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card
The conclusions (quotes):
1. "...the change to host software or firmware is minor but required"
SOFTWARE or FIRMWARE!!! So, the hardware for SD/SDHC reader host is the same.
2. "...Some manufacturers have produced 4 GB SD cards"
There are 4GB SD (not SDHC) cards available on the market!!!

first off, your an idiot to rely on wikipedia as your main source. you should NEVER do that. always go there and then look elsewhere to verify.
second, the article is wrong. i have personal experience with SD and SDHC. a regular SD reader/writer will NOT, i repeat,WILL NOT read SDHC. i have tried and it has NOTHING to do with drivers! the "host" is the HARDWARE not the OS.

Correct me if I'm wrong...
SDHC cards have 32-bit addressing but Wizard has only 16-bit bus - maybe that's why it should never work with SDHC-cards?

you are correct. this is EXACTLY why an SDHC card can NOT be read in the SD card slots.
