View Full Version : Slow scrolling fix
RacerII
17-10-2007, 09:00 AM
This fix is only for wm6.0
The one thing that anoyed me the most is the slow scrolling in pie when you load a "large"page.
This fixed it for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1503310&postcount=1480
I only used webview.dll from that archive and replaced it with the one in my windows folder , reset and it works like a charm now!
Btw use at your own risk , i used this dll on helmi_c's latest cooked rom.
But it probably should work on other roms.
Edit: i have atached the file.
Edit 2:
Lokmeup posted a cab file for this, you can find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1593807&postcount=33
Thanks lokmeup!

Its a part of pie's engine , probably from an older os.
However I can finally use pie normally again.

I just put it in and it didn't change anything. I just replaced the webview.dll.
I am using the ATT Rom. Maybe I mis understood what this did. I was hoping it would change it to be more of a page down when you scroll as opposed to the way it scrolls now by hitting each line of text or graphic.

It does not change the way it scrolls just takes away the incredibly laggy scrolling on longer pages.

This appears to have helped. Great file. So why was is so slow to begin with?
I have a feeleing(it's just my feeling = educated guess) it was rendering everything above the current position as well, so render time was exponentially bigger. probably a bug.

check the hermes registry under registry tweaks for ways to handle the page behavior of PIE. The one I like the best is the one that adds the keymaps key and two translations to give page up/down for left/right 4-way & field next/prev for up/down 4-way.
Changing the 4-way nav registry value also causes the initial view to skew on the email app.
edit: the webview dll doesn't appear to be fixing the freeze issue for me :(

it seems that on the ATT Tilt even programs like resco explorer seems to scroll down one line at a time when you use the up or down arrows like PIE but you can scroll fine when you move the scroll bars...can this be a ROM related issue not just PIE...

Sleuth,
Did you move the PIE cache to Storage Card?
If yes, then thats the problem.
It is a known issue with Kaiser.
Move it back to the ROM, the freeze will be gone :)

In fact, my File Explorer is now spinning and spinning forever in the Windows folder :(

nope... all PIE files including cache are still in their default locations under \windows. With all this storage memory the only thing I'm moving to my Storage Card is email attachments.

I can now scroll pretty nicely.

You mean we just have to place the cab file on the root directory of the Kaiser and then run it and then it will automatically replace the original webview.dll file with the modified file. Just want to know if my understanding is correct.

A word of caution: installed the webview.dll, was then unable to sync, getting an error about webview.dll (choose yes/no with no text) followed by a device hangup. It might have happened when syncing the PIE favorites.
Soft-reset cured the problem, but reappeared on the next sync -> Hard Reset (backup was just 10hours old, so far restore seems to be OK).
That´s on a TyTN II with the original German ROM.

I've come to the conclusion that the version of PIE that ships with the TyTN II ROM is an unmitigated POS. My specific problem is that, not only does this version not format well, but it also completely locks up while rendering. The same page that takes 25 seconds to load on my TyTN takes 65 seconds on my Tilt
Looks like one of my first Kaiser todo's will be a cooked ROM with a properly reverted version of PIE.

Found my @@%#@!!% problem: It was the damn hidden proxy (I remembered that I had let extrom run after flashing the HTC rom). Load times are just about back to normal now that I've run the proxy disable cab. The difference between my Tilt and my TyTN appears to be that the newer version of PIE on the Tilt is picking up more page information (for example: the ads on the top of XDA-Forum pages).
Unfortunately, these same ads force the new version of PIE to use horizontal as well as vertical scrollbars for XDA forum display. This negates the effectiveness of the custom page scrolling feature reghack documented in the Hermes WiKi (KeyMaps registry key technique) since this patch will only permit vertical scrolling once the page is at the far edge of a horizontal scroll.

Not at all Sleuth and thanks to Chaps for feedback. So, so far 3 or 4 folk have found this works successfully and 1 for whom it messed things up badly with Acive Sync. I just wonder whether that person has managed to download a corrupted version of the webview file??? I cannot see that his ASync error would have anything to do with the German ROM he's using - but I could be wrong (frequently am!!)

Does not seem to fix things on my AT&T device/ROM. Just to be clear while loading a long page scrolling using the RHS arrows or slider is either laggy or does not work at all. This is supposed to fix it. I over wrote the file but my scrolling is still very poor and a real PITA.
Can someone post the standard file from an AT&T device+AT&T ROM? I thought I could get the old file back with Resco but it is part of the ROM so not backed up.

I think folk are having problems in finding and replacing the file and it's causing other files to be displaced/deleted. The correct file should not impact on things like SMS / GPRS etc.
If anyone is attempting this then I suggest using the CAB file. Depending on what app you use to find the file it may not even show up - so CAB is best - it'll do the finding and replacing for you.

hmmm.... sounds like my issue. Your problem might be the hidden proxy which I found actually caused PIE to freeze up while rendering pages. Try this, download and install removeHiddenProxy4CWS_0522.cab from post 3 of this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332438) thread and see if it doesn't help. If you don't see a change, or things get slower, I'd like to hear this too. You can restore the hidden proxy by installing restoreHiddenProxy4CWS_0522.cab which is located on the same post.
@all: webviewdll.zip is a hidden, ROM file in /windows on your Kaiser. You need something other than the built in filemanager to work with it and that utility (I use greensoftware's excellent free utility gsfinder+) must be set to show hidden files and ROM files.
The built in filemanager as well as activesync explorer also cannot copy files over ROM files. You need a third party filemanager to do this as well. I always copy files to the /temp directory from my PC then use gsfinder+ to copy from temp to /windows.
This is why applying webviewdll.zip using the attached cab file is such a good option for those of you who just don't want to muck around with system files or third party file managers.

Installed remove... soft reset and now PIE will not load any pages. Was there any other setting to change in combination with this? This is the single change I tried. Reinstalled with restore..., soft reset and now I am hosed. No pages load with Opera nor PIE on 3G. WLAN brings web pages just fine. Then simply switching back to 3G works again. Strange.
Tried the whole process again and PIE worked under 3G after installing remove... and soft reset. It did not help the temporary freezes not poor scolling behavior during page loading. Any advice whether to leave it in the current removed state or not?

most ppl who has installed the webview.dll, by copying it direct to the folder has had much more success rate, just like me.
just a question for ppl who has installed it using the cab, after install, did you uninstall the loader through the add/remove, or did you just leave it alone, I think that some ppl remove it, which also removes the dll file, making the pie not usable.

Fixed it. I tried to overwrite the default DLL. But I think that didn't work well.
Now I've first deleted the original DLL, and then run the CAB file posted here.
Scrolling is definitely better now!
I started to experience major problems also after overwriting the webview.dll file. Now PIE won’t load any pages; loading seems to stop always to 1kb left. I tried also to load the .cab, but it doesn’t seem to have fixed the problem.
FIXED. I had the PIE cache relocated to the storage card.

For all of you with custom roms or changing the PIE settings:
EnableHiddenProxy.cab - You must run this to connect to the MediaNet service.
DisableHiddenProxy.cab - You must run this to disable the MediaNet proxy if you want to connect to the internet via activesync & your desktop computer.
Also, to enable the Cingular Video & other AT&T/Cingular sites, you PIE identification registry settings must be as follows:
HKLM\Security\Internet Explorer\User Agent
Find Key Named: CustomBase & change the String value to:
HTC-8900/1.2/ Mozilla/4.0

Can anybody confirm is it this webview.dll thing or other software conflicts? If yes, can anybody upload the original webview.dll? Actually Opera8.5 work well. Is just that all this bug really bugging me. Make me keep on asking the question, which component went wrong again.

lokmeup...
Thanks for the CAB. It seems to be working fine on my 8525 w/ stock AT&T WM6 ROM.
Works for me but I still get various PIE freezes at different times, but a big step in the right direction! Many Thanks!:)

I approached this fix with a little trepidation, as there are one or two posters who have reported problems.
For the record though, I have a Vario III, standard ROM, I put the .cab file into windows, opened it up, reset when prompted and now I can scroll a lot more smoothly- problem solved!
No problems syncing up again either.
Thanks to everyone that contributed to this fix, it's a pity HTC aren't so dedicated!

I was worried as well after reports of problems with PIE but the cab worked as advertised. Thank you, gentlemen, for this wonderful fix.:D
I use an unbranded HTC TYTNII with stock ROM.

This is a really nice "fix". It really speed things up.
I had to replace DLL with Resco Explorer. Uninstall PIEplus. Use the CAB, then it worked. At first I ran into problems.

Well, I used the cab and it worked for small pages but every time I try to load youtube, PIE freezes (and it also freezes the start menu). I also tried removing the hidden proxy, but it doesn't work yet. What bothers me the most is that I can't use flashbundle to watch youtube videos, so I'm gonna have to keep using the very slow vtap...
BTW, opera mini rocks.

hmmm.... sounds like my issue.
Installed the .cab. Didn't work. Then I removed the hidden proxy and PIE wasn't loading any pages at all. So, I restored the hidden proxy... does not work yet. I have not installed a storage card, so that's certainly not the issue.
¿Anyone have any ideas? I'm not a big fan of PIE, but I would like it to be functional.

Cab worked fine on my Vario III. TCPMP working properly with youtube and scroll sorted out. Before doing this, pie would freeze up my phone whilst loading and take absolutely ages to do anything.

Use the latest version of resco explorer.
Or install the .cab file.

omg... i installed the cab file. but my PIE froze when I open it. then i tried kms108's method whereby i installed spb pocket plus and boot the system insafe mode to install the webview.dll file.
but when i load the pages in PIE, i got an error "the page you are looking for cannot be found due to unknow error 0x80072f78"
hope some kind souls could help here...

HOW TO IMPROVE SCROLLING SPEED...
one simple solution is to turn off the clicking sounds...it sped up my scrolling by a HUGE margin. Maybe the tic-tic sound of scrolling slows things dowm, probably because it is timed in such a way that the 'click' sound is generated before the screen scrolls down based on that 'click'...who knows...but it definitely worked for me! so u can try that out too...
changing the scrolling sound -> i used advanced config editor (schaps), under the section -> TOUCHFLO SOUNDS->DISABLE SCROLLING SOUND
lemme know if it worked

This is a simple CAB that puts the webview.dll in the windows folder... This is the easy way to see if this .dll fixes your problem..

Copying the DLL file from the OP fixed the scrolling problem in PIE - GREAT find.
And, even better, it also fixed another annoying problem I have:
Previously, if I received an HTML e-mail - for example I get the Daily Dilbert cartoon - the graphics were unreadable. Clicking the "Scroll right" link widened the page as expected but did nothing to expand the graphics so the cartoon could not be viewed.
Now, with this new file, everything works correctly - the graphics expand coorectly to be prefect quality and a decent size.
I had thought that graphics quality should be a simple setting as in Opera Mobile but couldn'f find it.
Anyway, all fixed now!

Hello, I also am having the problem of slow scrolling or lagging while using IE. I just want to make sure that I put the .cab file in the right place. After I sync the phone with activesync to my PC, do I just drag the .cab file to the folder that opens up when I press explore windows device? Or is there another folder where it goes. Once it is there do I need to click and run it?
I read all the posts but it still isn't too clear for me.
Thanks

Installed the cabfile but I dont think it has changed a lot. When scrolling with for example windows explorer its still laggy when scrolling fast to bottom item. Maybe a little improvement but this doesent solve the real problem imo. or I did something wrong!

Well the slow scrolling fix applies to PIE (Internet Explorer) only - no other scrolling is changed by the cab file. So, you should notice a marked difference in PIE, that can virtually grind to a halt without the fix.

Well I can confirm on behalf of many that it does work and the difference is marked/obvious.
However, there may be reasons you do not see a difference. We would need more info from you. For example:
You might be using a ROM that already had the fix cooked into it.
The fix is most apparent when the page has fully downloaded.
The fix is more obvious on longer pages.
It might be necessary for you to soft reset before the changes are effective
You might have the Hidden Proxy issue reported by Sleuth here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337521&page=5
He also saw no difference until the removal of the Hidden Proxy.
etc etc.

Can anyone confirm that all I need to do is sync with my computer, and then place the .cab file in which folder? Do I need to tap and run it, or will it run on its own??

You can place the cab file on your storage card if you have one (otherwise on main memory). Does not matter what folder you put it in (does not need to be in any folder) You do need to tap on it to run it.

Only for wm6.
We probably wont see one for 6.1 unless ms fixes it.
This fix is actually an older version of webview.dll then the one in our kaiser roms, they broke something in the newer version.
And because its older it wont work for the newer pie with zoom function.
Perfect!! Just installed the lokmeup cab and get amazed with the improvement on PIE scrolling. Much better to surf the web. Tks a lot!!

Hello all
I copied and pasted the dll file into the windows foler.. it didn't stop me or anything... it asked me if i wanted to overwrite.. and i said yes.
Then i did a soft reset.. and since then the phone has gotten a lot slower and IE won't start up... the fone freezes when I try to open IE.
Unfortunately i didn't make a backup of the old dll file and now i am stuck.
I have the latest ROM released by HTC WM6.1
please do advise as to what I can do next (Don't tell me another ROM installation!)

My PIE also froze after installing this (Resco Explorer, manual copy), but after a couple of seconds an empty orange yes/no box came up. I went for "yes", then a number of policy warnings regarding webview.dll came up. I answered yes to all warnings, and now PIE works ok without the scroll lag (Unbranded TYTN II, standard Swedish ROM)
I hope this helps someone...
