UPDATE: Please try downloading the latest WMDC first before attempting anything in this section of the guides. you will find the latest version HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx) .

To follow this guide please make sure you have a copy of WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/) installed, I will refer to the Windows Mobile Device Centre as the WMDC for ease of reading. If you do not have the WMDC installed please go here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx) to install it first.

One problem with windows VISTA is that it uses the new "Windows Mobile Device Centre" and not activesync which we are used to, thus our standard RUU programs will not upgrade our Hermes devices as in windows XP. This guide will show you how to configure VISTA to work just the same as XP with our RUU programs.

For this guide firstly you need to download the new drivers:
Drivers for Windows Vista x32 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=33662&d=1169888879)
Drivers for Windows Vista x64 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=33892&d=1170385335)NOTE:: If you are using a x64 bit computer, you will need to boot up with driver signing enforcement turned off. To accomplish this, you will need to press F8 during boot up. If you do not do this, the 64 bit drivers will not install properly and this tutorial will not be of any use to you.

Extract the contents to a folder on your desktop, call this folder "AS_DRIVERS". It contains the drivers from activesync which we will use instead of the native VISTA WMDC drivers when the device is in bootloader.

Now you must enter the bootloader on your device, to do this press and hold both the side ok button and the power button then put your stylus into the hole on the bottom of the device, your device will reset and show the red blue green bootloader screen. LEAVE THE DEVICE IN BOOTLOADER MODE and connect it using the USB cable to your VISTA PC.

http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/Thumbs/1.jpg (http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/1.jpg)

Now navigate into the WMDC (Start>All Programs>Windows Mobile Device Center) and click on the "connection settings" menu icon.

http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/Thumbs/2.jpg (http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/2.jpg)

In the connection settings menu untick "allow USB connections" then press OK.

Now exit the WMDC and return to the desktop, go into the start menu and type "Services", this will take you into the local services dialogue and show a list of all services either running or registered with your pc.

http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/Thumbs/3.jpg (http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/3.jpg)

Scroll down the list and make sure these services are present:
Windows Mobile-based connectivity
Windows Mobile 2003-based connectivityIf these services are not started then double click each one and set them to Automatic start by clicking the "startup-type" drop-down menu and selecting automatic then click the start button in the same window, apply the setting by pressing OK. Now return back to the desktop again.

Go into the start menu and type "Device Manager" then run, this will take you into the device manager. Click the "+" symbol next to "Mobile Devices" and double click on "HTC USB Sync".

This will bring up the properties of the currently connected device (the hermes in bootloader).

Vista x32 users select the file "wceusbsh.inf"

Vista x64 users select the file "wceusbshx64.inf"

Then click Open.

http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/Thumbs/12.jpg (http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/12.jpg)

Press close and escape back to the desktop now.

Now we must stop the WMDC process, start the task manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Escape.

http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/Thumbs/13.jpg (http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/images/stories/Misc_Guides/VISTA/13.jpg)

Click the WMDC line and click "End Process". In the confirmation window, again press End Process.

Now re-enter the WMDC and re-enable USB connections (click connection settings and tick the box "enable USB connections").

Your RUU programs for HardSPL/Radios/WM6 ROMs should now run as desired once you are synced with WMDC. Since we have updated the driver which Vista uses when the device is in bootloader mode.

NOTE:: This technique is still in testing so if you have any issues please post in the official thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299462). Until we find another way to get RUU working with vista you may need to revert back to XP for upgrading your Windows Mobile Based Device.

I saw this same article somewhere else and already did this

Thanks for posting this here though! Also, it helps to use the windows mobile device center 6.1 update. It works both on my desktop Vista Ultimate computer and my mom's home premium laptop

Also, a little sidenote, if you want windows mobile device center to display your own phone as the image instead of the standard PDA/PPC Phone/Smartphone image when you sync follow these steps:

Disable USB connections in Windows Mobile Device Center
Uninstall the drivers for your device from device manager
Save the image you want to use as an icon file called sync.ico
Save the icon to the windows folder on your ppc
Disconnect your PPC and enable USB connections again
Wait for the computer to reinstall the device driver and it will sync with the new icon

Sorry, I don't remember who first suggested this. I take NO credit for this whatsoever.

Doesn't work with G4.

Have you tried my tutorial on how to dual boot your computer so that it has Vista and XP on it? I started having problems with my phone not flashing properly after like 2 weeks. I installed a few Windows updates and then the drivers stopped working so I set up my computer to have Vista and XP on it so that I can use Vista on a daily basis and only use XP when I'm working on my phone.

Anybody have found a Vista Update Utility for G4?

Thanks!

This got my G4 to finally stop giving me connection errors in the boot loader!

Now I can finally get my G4 unbricked :D

I used the shelltool successfully in Vista 32bit, but the world isn't liking me for flashing in 64bit so far... Either way, thanks!

Also, you might want to update the tutorial to tell 64bit users to boot up with driver signing enforcement turned off (Press F8 on boot up) else the 64bit drivers won't take.

The Vista RUU doesn't crash as I was used to, but it doesn't run either (with a prophet that is) it 's complaining about "beeing outdated".

Are there any solutions yet known for this inconvenience? Thanks in advance!

Is there a newer version of the ROM update utility? The one posted above doesn't run, but, rather, just complains that it's out of date!

The driver method detailed above works great (with the caveat for x64 users that they have to disable the driver signing restriction), but unfortunately I'm still no further along because I can't seem to find an RUU that will work!

If anyone knows of one that really works on Vista, please pass it one. (I've searched through all these postings, but none seem to work!)

Thanks much for the detailed driver instructions!

Has anyone found a complete method to flash on Vista? As posted above, the RUU included with this thread doesn't work. It gets most of the way through and then, just before starting to flash, gives a "This utility is out of date" error and exits. :(

Again, the driver instructions given in this thread are sound, but without a working RUU they only give you half of the solution for flashing on Vista.

I have successfully flashed using Shelltool, but it works sporadically at best.

Does anyone have a start to finish solution?

I followed the instructions given in this forum and they seemed to work perfectly for me.

here is my 2 cents though i had initially flashed my device using the origional t-mobile rom (SPL/IPL 3.08 radio 2.69) and it worked without any problems. It was only when i tried flashing with a cooked rom that it gave me problems.

Here are the RUU file from that rom and hopefully someone can figure out why it worked

I'm not finding the "side ok button."

Now you must enter the bootloader on your device, to do this press and hold both the side ok button and the power button then put your stylus into the hole on the bottom of the device.

I got a Spint HTC Touch.. The only side button I have is for the camera.

I FIGURED IT OUT.. NVM. But the Vista Ruu doesn't work.

I'm running Vista Home Premium and sorry but this method doesn't work for me. I have done exactly what you said and followed each step-by-step. When I go to ROM-upgrade and use the bootloader, it crashes everytime. Its as if I didn't do a thing!

Is there somehow someway of upgrading via the miniSD card ? I tried a guide I found for the Hermes, but it won't work with the Wizard.

My screen got broken and I sent it back to get repaired and they deleted everything on my ROM and reinstalled a factory ROM. However my SIM/CID unlock seems untouched, but it really sucks that I can't put back my stuff how I had it because I'm running Vista now !

Thanks T-Mobile for screwing my wonderful Vario!!!!!!!!

BTW I have a Vario I and III this is for the Vario I aka Wizard, just so you don't get confused.

Which RUU are you using?!? Where did you get it? All of the RUUs that I and many others have tried have failed to work on Vista. I've tried almost ten different versions.

They mostly fall into four categories, old versions that just crash, versions that give error 300, versions that give error 238, and versions that won't read .nbf files (mostly newer versions that use .nbh files.)

Also, what version of Vista are you using? 32 or 64 bit?

Hello there.

I´ve been flashing my locked g4 using windows xp, and the olip Hard SPL, that simuates an unlocked phone. Nevertheless finding a nice RUU update utility that worked was quite a task, even under windows xp. Many of the actual releases have their own RUU, but even with the last TNT release and the Slim Edition release, I needed to use my own RUU XP Update Utility to get them working on my G4.

I´ve tryied a few times flashing the radio or the splash screen under Windows Vista, to avoid big crashes, but get stuck on the RUU Vista Update, as it appears that has not been patched for a locked G4, as it seems it´s cheching the phone and returning a nasty error.

I´m wondering if anyone, as stated on one of the first posts, have managed to find a RUU update utility for Windows Vista that does not check the phone and returns the error and that perhaps could share the RUU with us placing it on the forum as an attachment.

The RUU that i´m actually using under XP is the one tha came within the Wizard Love compilation, version 2.0001 or something similar (I´m not on my flashing computer right now so I can´t tell), and it´s called RUU - No ID.

So hopefully somebody already have the Vista RUU so the wrong update utility error could be a thing of the past under vista.

I´m pretty sure that the drivers under vista are now working as stated on the forum, as the RUU does not crash at all and seems to work just fine, until it´s time to check - I´m guessing - the phone ID, where it gives the error.

Okay,

now I have my wizzard in bootloader menu.
Then it connects with my laptop, and there also appears "Mobile Device" in the device manager.
But when my Wizzard is in normal mode, my laptop just ignores it.
It won't connect, or even show "mobile device" or whatever in the device manager.

I need to connect it, because I have to install a secureW program for school.

Could anyone help me please?

thnx in advance ;)

pvpatel:

Based on my "experimentation", once you install the drivers under Vista, you should be good, regardless of what it "says" is installed.

Now, I'm futzing around trying to get my wizard to accept an upgrade to WM6, any flavor, and it just won't do it. It takes some of the other (older - WM5) ROMs that I've messed around with over the years, but it just absolutely refuses to upgrade to anything newer.

As for WMDC, the best way I found to ENSURE that everything connects, is to first, diconnect the phone from the computer, run the Task Manager (CTRL - SHIFT - ESC) and then kill the WMDC process on your PC.

After killing it, relaunch it. Once you have relaunched it, you can close it out using the X (close) button - it won't actually close - it will just go away and run in the background.

Now put you phone into bootloader mode (reset it while holding the camera button works for me), then, connect it (note: Always use the same USB port for your phone when trying to flash it - moving to a different USB port while in bootloader mode, only confuses the PC and you won't be able to connect).

After connecting, count to 15. Then try to flash.

You should do this procedure each and every time you try to flash - it's the best way to ensure you have a good connection and that all the software is running right.

okay so I am in bootloader mode when running Vista RUU or Custom RUU and all I keep getting is Error 240 or Error 264. My phone is in bootloader mode with the 3 color screen but I cant get the RUU to work. I am thinking this step is for downgrading the SPL, correct? Well its not working for me. Am i flashing the RUU? I dont know if I should be in bootloader mode or not when trying to downgrade. I have updated the driver for Vista (wceusbsh.inf) but I am lost after that. Cant get anything to work.

Gah. Doing according to the guide but the phone aint coming up in device manager. I have tried killing the WMDC program in task manager and done it again, same thing, the mobile wont show up in device manager.

I have Vista X64 SP1, latest WMDC version, started the wizard in bootloader mode. Will it matter how I get to the bootloader mode? I did it by start it by the power button and press the button on the right upper side of it.

I have Windows 2008 Server x64 on my machine, so for obvious reasons I wasn't able to flash my device..

Even with the Vista RUU and the new drivers (with the driver protection thing off) it just never worked..

Anyway, there is a 100% method to make it work on any version of windows (32-64 bit, XP-2003-Vista-2008)!!!!!

It's called VMWare with XP, and my phone if flashing right now :)

Regards, hope this will help someone save lots of time ;)

Getting Error 300.
Done all the steps but when I run the Vista_ROMUpdateUtility it gives me 300 error.
Tells me to get a newer update utility.

do we really need to do this any longer --- My mda works on both usb and BT connections using vista. Have not tried updating yet...but figured a quick "do we" was in order.

Works like a charm. Kudos. I'd already done the driver updating before, when I just got the laptop, but the RUU still crashed.
but all I did was copy the .nbf file into the Vista RUU and it worked like a breeze!

thanks dude!

I didn't the get the out of date message though and I only did a radio upgrade for the trial. Plannings to flash a full sizes 6.1ROM - any suggestions as to which ones were giving trouble?

Hi guys,

I have a question. I have a Vista 64 bit, and i was not able to run flash proces until now, even if i tried the guide step by step. So my question is, does someone tried flahing from virtual machine (Windows XP) running in Vmware Workstation, latest version? This is my last chance how to upgrade my Wizard and i do not wanna brick it, so i ask first. Another chance is in Ubuntu 8.04 but i do not think, that there is some flash utility working under Ubuntu.

Hey mate,

My PC is running under Win 2008 server x64 (pretty much the same thing as Vista x64)..
I never got the vista upgrade to work on my PC, so I set up an XP machine in VMWare, and flash my phone through it every time :)

Don't forget to turn on USB connections in your VMWare, and when XP is started go to VM -> Removable Devices -> your phone and set a tick there.. Done :)

Good luck, Flexer
