View Full Version : Kaiser hard/aluminum/armor case search

I read a number of the case threads and it seems like there's still no one shipping a Kaiser hard case (aka aluminum case aka armor case), along the lines of this one from Boxwave (for the Hermes/TyTN):
http://www.boxwave.com/products/armorcase/armor-case-htc-tytn_2076.htm
I anyone has found such a beast, please post it here - and I will update this thread as I (hopefully) find sources for the same.
Also, if you want something like this, Boxwave has a link to request an "armor case" for other devices:
http://www.boxwave.com/community/request/request_model_51.htm
please submit a request - they *do* seem to listen....

I think it's not a lack of manufacturer desire to support the Kaiser, I think it's just that the Kaiser hasn't been out long enough for the manufacturers to catch up.
I'm hoping that something similar to Boxwave's Active Case for the Hermes is released for the Kaiser soon - I loved that case.

Looks exactly like what I want, thanks - I sent them a message asking about a black version. The proporta one doesn't sound like it's armored all the way around - just the screen?
I only have this case for skiing, and for that I want something TOUGH :)

this case looks very similar to the tytn case. tytn I and II size is relatively the same same so i don't see why the case wouldn't fit.

fitting is one thing ... but having all the openings exactly specify to the TyTN II is very important !!!
camera & buttons are not the same place between the 2 models !! :eek:
sure you can use the TyTN's case ... but your rear camera will be covered .. and the TyTN's camera is large and centered, where the TyTN II's is off to the side a bit !! :eek:

I would be very careful if I were you !
most sellers tried to passed on the accessories for the TyTN as fitting/working for the Kaiser/TyTN II ...etc
he listed the black one as case for the Kaiser ... but look at the picture ... it is NOT !!
item # 160166816756
~~~
and if you look at his listing for the silver one (#160166816744) ... the front of the case droop to the right side similar to the case for the original TyTN's front camera ( right front )
looks like he just thow in the Kaiser and took pictures !!
I'd sent him a message demanding more pictures detailing the openings and showing the backside ..etc :eek:
I have the TyTN one and it does *NOT* fit the TyTN II. The button openings around the scroller wheel for instance are a complete misfit.
not sure if these guys will sell it per customer instead of mass wholesale though :p
we could buy it as a group thing ???
Proporta have just released thier Aluminium case for the Vario III,
The webpage was acting up a bit so I just rang them and made an order, if you look at the catalogue for all Vario III accessories they do a few package deals one of which is a top of the range screen protector, 3 in 1 stylus and an aluminium hard case, which'll save you about £5.
Bonza mate, thats more holler for the dollar eh.
Well thats good news, I just rang up Proporta and thats a generic image they use until they manage to update with the official images. So panic over, The Vario III aluminium case has definatly been released, I got an email this morning saying mine has been dispatched. I'll update when it arrives and confirm there hasn't been a royal cock-up
any difference (front button shapes / sizes etc) between the III and the unbranded kaiser?
As the HTC Kaiser page doesn't list the case but the Vario does.
As far as I know the Vario III is branded by T-Mobile, so it has a Silver gun metal case, not black, and a dirty great T-Mobile logo on it (where the hell are sugar cubes brought these days?!?). the buttons remain the same. And I also find it a bit strange since I contacted them about a HTC Tytn II case and got told, they hadn't made one, then Ordered the Vario III case, I think they're a little confused about the two models, I expect due to the Vario III's lack of reference to HTC.
That should raised an alarm for me :p
I don't know about you but in my case I would preferred that a vendor knows their product !!!
the difference between they knowing what you are refering to & them not having a clue of what you are talking about ...it would serve a great point down the road in term of customer supports & save you a lot of hair pulling !! :D
but ... that's just me !! customer know how & support is a deal breaker for me. ;)
When you get it could you tell us how much bulk this case adds to the phone? I'm trying to see if it would still be "pocketable".
Also, anyone find a hard case specifically for the AT&T tilt (i.e. no front camera hole)?
I don't recall seeing such an animal for my 8525, so I doubt it. The "extra" hole doesn't add much vulnerability IMO, so I'm not worried about it personally.
Ordered the same case on the 31st October arrived this morning not bad for Hong Kong to UK
Good fit with all the holes in the right places (T-Mobile Vario III).
Tip for anyone ordering from the UK check the sellers other items as it works out cheaper if you order in dollors not pounds
Good fit with all the holes in the right places (T-Mobile Vario III).
So you mind if I ask how tight the fit is? The last couple of PDair Aluminium cases have been a not-very-tight fit, with gapes around the phone on the same side as the catch to secure it.
Any photos you could put up?
Received my hard case I ordered from eBay today. Here are my impressions. My 'standard' I'm using for this comparison is the rhinoskin I've had on my Dell Axim x51v that I've had for 2 years. It has kept my Dell in perfect shape after much use with not a scratch on it. The rhinoskin was definitely worth the money. If you couldn't tell, I'm a big fan of hard cases.
What I own: AT&T Tilt
What I bought: Aluminium Case for HTC Kaiser/HTC P4550/HTC TyTN II
Price: $18.99 + $6 s/h
Bought: evening of 30 Oct through eBay/PayPal
Arrived: 6 Nov
IMPORTANT: just so you know... this comes with the small hole for a front camera which the Tilt doesn't have. I knew this going into it and it doesn't bother me at all.
First impressions: comes in a nice box with case and belt clip attachments. The quality is akin to the rhinoskin... in fact, I would swear that the same company makes this case, then resold under rhinoskin in the US. The case closure fastener is exactly the same. I have both cases in front of me right now and the likenesses seem more than coincidental. When closed, the seams of the upper and lower case fit perfectly, no misalignment at all. I'd even go so far as to say the hinge is better than the rhinoskin because there is less play in it. I don't have a scale but it is incredibly light weight and adds minimal weight and/or girth to the phone.
Aesthetics: the black case visually flows nicely into the Tilt. At first glance, it's hard to tell there is a case on it at all. It has a nice black-matte look, similar to the back case color of the Tilt. Very complimentary.
Fit and feel: The Tilt will gently slide into the foam interior lining with little struggle. I'd say it's near perfect with no unwanted rubbing. The Tilt feels snug as a bug with no wiggling or play. The overall feel is solid. Although you can feel that it's metal, the black finish has just enough texture for easy handling and no slippage in your hand. The hinge on one side and closure device on the other actually add to the grip and don't get in the way.
Clear cover: This case comes with the hard plastic cover over the screen area. The clear cover matches the size of the screen exactly with no loss of display area. It it perfectly clear.. the display still looks great. It seems very solid but want I can't attest to is it's durability and scratch resistance... only time will tell. I can say that it looks great now. You CANNOT use the touch screen with the front cover closed. The clear cover hovers a few millimeters over the touch screen. It does force you to learn and use the exterior controls of the phone however.
Phone access when closed: You can access everything except the touch screen and microSD slot with the cover closed. In fact, I'd argue that your hands can better navigate the exterior buttons now without looking for buttons because of the physical 'reference" points of the case. You know exactly where the button is and can operated everything without obstruction.
Opening the case: one thing that is hard to do is flip the case open with one hand, mainly because the closure mechanism is fairly secure. Once open, it swings open about 200 degrees... well enough out of the way for the tilt screen mechanism. With the screen in the tilt configuration, the front cover is well out of the way behind the device and is hardly noticeable. The only awkward configuration is with the phone not tilted... my left hand is still searching for a good position to hold the phone with the cover open to the left.
Recommendation: for those looking for the added protection of a hard case, I would definitely recommend this case. I don't think you can find a lighter AND more durable case imo. It's quality is equal to or better than my previous rhino skin.
Overall rating: Great Success!!
Glad to be of help. I recommend putting a screen protector on the cases clear window also. I did just to be safe and the screen still looks great.
So far, no problems with reception from the case. Cell phone still works the same... gps still acquires in doors... wireless no problems. I may try some benchmark test later this week just to prove to myself that the case doesn't affect reception... I'll post results if I do.
I agree with everything stated by smuook, I also bought my PDair case on the 30/10 it arrived yesterday & is spot on just like my previous PDair cases.
As for the seller I have also bought various bits for phones from him in the past year & he appears spot on also.
Now I can resign the PDair leather case as a backup as it was far too bulky to fit in a trouser pocket.
the only thing that make it bulky is the screw knob circle that is screwed to the back of the case that is male part of the clip that snap into the clip ...etc
I can't imagine you would screw/unscrew that part repeatedly though .... I put locktite on mine to be screw on permanently, due to the reports of people had that part loose overtime because the clip swiveling.
it all depended on the angle of the pic taken :)
their is low angle ( dark ) ... look closely, it is a little grainy.
the reason yours showed much more grainy is because you took the picture straight on ( more light directly )
Anything is possible, but you should probably look at a different case if you want touch screen access. These cases IMO are not aimed at someone who intends to be using the phone a lot, they're aimed at situations like mine - where one is engaged in a physical activity which endangers the phone, thus protection of the fragile screen trumps usage of same.
Perhaps you should look at those Proporta cases - more "stylish", less protective, but with a metal "flap" to protect the screens.
is that the case you are talking about? 1 thing i dont like about it is the plastic cover over the keyboard...
i only got my kaiser yesterday, and i havent brought it out with me yet...1 reason being i wanted to read the manual first as i have no clue how to use it (coming from a Nokia n73) and 2nd reason being... i just keep thinking that if I put it in my pocket, i will somehow end up smashing the screen in, as it looks so delicate!
i dont have a physical job or anything, so it would just be in my pocket most of time, so really im looking for a case to protect it, but still want to use the touchscreen..... and REALLY dont want to make it any bulkier then it already is
I guess the proporta case does look good, but the plastic on the keyboard is real off - putting - it looks like it would be hard to use the keyboard with it on....any other similar suggestions?
Gang - I had the version of this case for my PPC-6700, and I know it saved me on at least three separate occasions from a damaged or broken phone. The aluminum is sturdy, but can be reshaped if necessary. I did remove my clear plexiglass screen to allow touch screen usage. The only negative for this was ear smudges on my screen. :(
I cannot recommend this case strongly enough for anyone considering a case.
You can even paint it if you'd like. :)
i had been looking into this case a few weeks back when planning the purchase of my Kaiser, but i still haven't decided on this yet - lose touch screen capability and gain safety knowing my $750 device is protected??? the Proporta case is much nicer looking, except for the keyboard issue already mentioned AND the fact that you'll look like a complete tool talking on it with a huge flap hanging down / to the side (for the side folding version) - definitely a Bluetooth ONLY case....
just bought a decent swivel clip from the AT&T store and it'll work good while i have something to protect the screen with as the screen faces outwards! not a good thing when you're in the automotive business.... but we'll see, haven't found anything yet that just stands out to be the best protection, looks, AND functionality yet!
what kind of clip is that, does it swivel? most of the other sites show that cheap ass 10 year old designed swivel clip that breaks after 5 uses....
take a close look at how those cases are opened !!!
it is from left to right ... :eek:
think of your device when you want the keyboard slide out ... it is hanging out in the open ... :eek:
mine is from PDAIR/EBAY ... which opened right to left ... and when keyboard slide out ... it take up less real estate and is protected by the opening side ...etc
your recommended case is quite the opposite :p
hope I made that easy to understand :)
I am trying this case.
http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_900000_11000164&products_id=6561
At least until the Siedio cases release.
I have the same case and it works great. Only minus so far is that you have to open the hatch each time you want to use the touchscreen and that it does not fit a 2700mAh battery but 1600mAh should work.
edit:
Maybe someone knows a case that works with the 2700mAh battery?
Update to my PDair black case... it's already showing signs of the black finish wearing down. I'm starting to see the silver underneath some wear spots. This doesn't bother me but I thought I'd let others know. To me, a hard case is kinda like a pickup truck... any dents or dings are signs of ruggedness. The case does a good job of protecting the tilt. If this bothers you then you should consider a silver case.
Is there a way to avoid that ?
Can't you remove the transparent protection part of the case below the scren and simply put a traditionnal protection screen to make up for that ?
Edit : it appears that Aldolino already asked the same question here, but awaits to be answered !
thought about that myself, and i'm sure i could get that to work.... with a garage full of tools, anything is possible (my car is proof)! shouldn't be hard to pop out the "plexiglass" if that's what it truly is, but then two issues arise - now the case isn't anything more than protection from the outsides of the housing leaving the screen 100% vulnerable, and putting the plexi back on if you actually need it!
this looks to be the way i'm going to go with it eventually since none of the leather cases or the swivel clip AT&T sells in their stores have not really excited me (though i already ended up spending the $20 AT&T asked for on the swivel clip.... which makes the phone face the wrong direction.... damnit.... :rolleyes: )
looks like there are some even easier solutions on eBay now....
and then for the nicest looking one so far....
Hard Cover Clip Case For HTC Kaiser TyTN II 2 + LCD Prohttp://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/s.gif in CLEAR (http://cgi.ebay.com/Hard-Cover-Clip-Case-For-HTC-Kaiser-TyTN-II-2-LCD-Pro_W0QQitemZ130175695670QQihZ003QQcategoryZ15036Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) or SMOKE (http://cgi.ebay.com/Hard-Cover-Clip-Case-For-HTC-Kaiser-TyTN-II-2-LCD-Pro_W0QQitemZ130175695667QQihZ003QQcategoryZ15036Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
the last one allows you to still use the touch screen AND the sliding keyboard, finding out right now if the two are one in the same as they look similar but the first one doesn't mention anything about the tilt feature.... pretty nice if you ask me, only question i still have is the quality of the belt clip and how long it will last with the [ab]use i give phones! a clip like THIS ONE (http://cgi.ebay.com/HEAVY-DUTY-METAL-CLIP-CASE-FOR-TREO-700-650-755p-680_W0QQitemZ270188289685QQihZ017QQcategoryZ108605 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) would be great.... it also won't fit on my desktop charger, so it'll have to come off every day instead of the Monaco / PDAir cases where it just opens up to remove the phone.... both cases look like they wouldn't have a problem residing in your pocket without the swivel even attached, so that's also a possibility
Wow !
Nice catches mate !
Actually there's only one thing that refrains me from rushing to buy those.
I'd like to find a solution that would work with a removable car mount (preferred with speakers included) and I don't know it there would be with those case covers.
So far I was favoring a pdair solution (aluminium case & car mount even without speakers) but that might change with the kind of product you have just found :)
I pulled the trigger and put in a bid for one. If it goes through, I'll put up a review.
oh whoops, forgot to post my review of them! i bought the cheaper one of the two in smoke (they're both the same product, btw), and it works great, with two problems.... 1) the case sometimes has issues getting ON and its not a fun task pushing the hell out of the covers, crushing an expensive item like this; 2) the Kaiser won't fit in my desktop charger or my ProClip dash mount with the case installed, and it has issues with certain USB plugs connecting to it - if the surrounding of the plug is too thick, it won't allow the plug to go all the way into the phone, like the one i have out in the car when i'm not using my ProClip....
other than that, this is a GREAT all around case, and if you don't have either a desktop charger or a ProClip and use the right USB connectors, this thing will work like a charm! you can install the swivel clip if you like, just like i did when i first received the package in the mail, but you'll end up taking it right back off - i promise.... its not practical at all!
