View Full Version : [New Version] HushSMS - A "Silent" SMS Tool [New Version v0.6beta]
c0rnholio
23-10-2007, 03:45 AM
HushSMS is a tool to sent a class zero message (aka Flash-SMS) or a stealthy PING message to another cellphone.
The "Silent Ping" enables you to sent a message to another cellphone without the owner getting knowledge about.
The message is discarded on the owners phone and no trace exists. You will get back a message from the operator that your message has been delivered, proving that your message has been received, and thus you can know that the owners phone is switched on.
This is not some kind of hack or whatever. It's a normal function per standard and works on any phone.
Q: Why such a software? A: I regulary need it in my job. Sometimes I have to be sure a specific phone is switched on and I can send information to that phone without it beeing stored (class zero message).
It runs on Windows Mobile 5 and 6 based PocketPCs.
EDIT: A word of warning: If you send a class zero message to a windows mobile device, your number will not be shown. Instead of the senders number, windows mobile will show something like "Network Message".
So in general this tool could be used in a manner it is not intended and designed for. So be responsible!
Usage
-----
Copy the CAB file to your device and double click it.
The program is installed to \Program Files\HushSMS\HushSMS.exe.
There are three functions:
Send a normal SMS
Send a class zero message (Flash-SMS)
Send a stealthy message
- To send a normal sms, leave the checkboxes for "Class 0" and PING unchecked. If you want a receipt enable the "Return Confirmation" checkbox.
- To send a class zero message enable the "Class 0" checkbox and write your message.
- To send a silent PING just enable the "PING" checkbox. There is no need to write something in the Textbox, because the target phone will discard it anyway.
If you enter the number manually you have to enter it in international format (for example starting with +49... for germany).
You can alternately choose the number from your address-book but it has to be in international format also.
The program will pop-up a message box to notify you about the success or failure of the sending process. This message box
might be under an overlaying window if you have other programs open (a file explorer for example).
That's it. Enjoy it, as always it's freeware.

EDIT: v0.2
Download @: http://www.silentservices.de/HushSMS-0.2.CAB
EDIT: v0.3 beta 08.04.2008
See post #87: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2098699&postcount=87
EDIT: v0.3 beta4 15.04.2008
Changes:
- Smartphone UI
- Added PING2 message option
- Added notification bubble (for PPC only)
- Program now quits after message is sent
- small general improvements
As for the PING2 function: I added this for all the people whose provider will automatically transform Type0 messages to normal SMS. This function uses a different method for sending a "silent ping" which should enable all users to send those messages, even on US carriers. The principle is pretty simple: I'm sending a MWI deactivation, which is not shown to the user, and request a status report. If you receive the status report, you known that the "pinged" phone is active.
See Post #103 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2118254&postcount=103)
EDIT: v0.6beta 27.05.2008
New features:
- Additional MWI Messages (except for voice MWI, most of them will not work on windows obile based target phones)
- Added WAP-Push SI (service indication) and WAP-Push SL (service load messages)
See Post #124 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2239358&postcount=124)
This program doesn't seem to work on US-Carriers (except with the new beta4 which enables another method for the "silent ping")
Edit: I've tested the program on the german eplus network, and found out that class0 messages, as well as type0 (The Ping) are converted to normal messages by the SMSC of eplus.
However, it is working as expected on vodafone.de

Tested on my tytn and it works perfectly.
Quick question...If I send a class 0 sms to normal cellphone like samsung or nokia will my number be shown.
The only extra feature that would be great would be the ability to send a sms to a friend and make it seem as though it came from another friend.....is it possible to do and if so how difficult would it be to implement something like that?

It seems like a class zero message appears on the Nokia cellphone
Before anyone else says it doesn't work: read the first post, you MUST USE COUNTRY CODE.

I never entered the country code and it still works.

I've tested this app and it does everything it says it does, which is cool. When I choose "Class 0" and sent a text message to myself (wm6 device), it read the message, it was from "Network Administrator", and my phone number was not listed. Also, when I enabled just the ping to send a silent message to my other cellphone which was off, it read that the message was sent. When i turned my other cellphone on, (motorola phone. non windows device), my cellphone number was visible. So this works exactly as c0rnholio states.
tried it on my wizard and nothing happens, international format or not. It says message sent but i never get a ping or anything back even to myself

I tried this on my apache as well and had no success. Maybe I don't know how to enter the phone number properly. I also live inside the US and have Verizon if this helps at all.

AFAIK the APache is a CDMA device. Handling of SMS is sligtly different between CDMA and GSM. This program is written for GSM Networks and due to the lack of a CDMA Network and a device which supports it, I cannot make it compatible. Sorry.

It might be that your network opertor is blocking such messages. Have you been able to send class 0 sms in general with other tools?

Interesting. Then your Nokia behaves against the GSM standard. Which one is it?

I fixed that country code stuff in v0.2, which will be out in a few days. You will the be able to send either in international or national format.

A class zero message is displayed in general. Also it is right that your number is shown. Some phones are able to save those messages, others are not. So in general everything is fine and your operator supports class zero messages. If you get a class 0 message and to not click on options->save or whatever the procedure is on your phone, the message should be discarded according to the GSM standard.
The number obfuscation only seems to occur on windows mobile based devices. On these, when a class 0 message is comming in the device will not show the senders number but instead show "Network Message" or "Network Administrator". This seems to be a bug in windows mobile and may lead to further attack scenarios because a user may think this message is comming from the network operator. If you send a wap push SI message for example you can embed a link to a webpage, or a link to a cab-file on a webpage. The user might then think this link is from the network operator and click on it. This may lead to mallicious code installation or execution or whatever.
The "Silent Ping" is defined in the GSM standard. It is a kind of message which must be received by the handset and must be directly discarded without user notification. I've tested this with different phones from different manufacturers and it never failed to work, but YMMV.
So your phones behaves in the normal range of operation. Have you tried to send the PING to your nokia? If so, and your nokia shows it, what is displayed?

PING works as advertised - no sign of it at Nokia at all.

this is somewhat a nice-and-funny program....i like it....though i haven't figured out how the function "Ping" does as i have tried by following the instruction from its official site......weird.....One thing is important to whom may it fail with other functions....pls do remember Enter International Format in a word coutry code....for exampl like me Hong Kong is +852..

Now that one made me laugh... Seems telstra is taking it whereever they can, huh? :D
Pretty tough for a provider to take extra cash for different type of sms messages...
I should write up a "additional cost" warning for telstra users in the first page ;-)

For me the most interesting fuction is PING - so I started the app on Hermes, entered phone number and tried to PING 3 different phones: Nokia 6230i (In PlusGSM), SonyEricsson k750i (Orange FR) and k810i (EraGSM). Messages were sent using virtual operator "mBank mobile" that is hosted by PlusGSM. ALL messages were shown normal way on the screen as empty messages with sender number visible.
Then I tried to do the same putting EraGSM card in the Hermes: everything worked as expected - silent PING worked fine: it means, that your operator can modify setting of the messages you are sending and autoconvert class0 messages to normal SMSes and this not a problem with HushSMS app, but your operator.

Question mates:
so in any of the 3 options, 1)normal SMS 2) Class 0 3)PING message, does it count as one SMS sent from my usage plan?
ie. does this bypass our telco as a REAL stealth SMS, and we get to send SMSes for free? and any difference when use with a post paid account or with prepaid cards ?
THANKS! seems like an interesting project!

It's always treated as normal SMS messages, until you use some odd (that-wants-to-piss-you-off) operator like st3v3, that asks more money for delivery receipt.

knowing telstra they probably pay a team of people to send the "message delivered" message.

Works great, I've tried it on O2 Atom Life, and I like it so far.
I also like the features of µ-SMS v3.xx as it has all the features of this program plus many more, like smilies, VCard and VCalendar. I am not sure if µ-SMS ever worked as advertised, but I love the concept behind it. I am sure if someone could program such a thing, even Microsoft will buy it for their next operating system as a replacement for the current boring SMS application.
Unfortunately µ-SMS does not work on WM5/6 :(

Maybe it's something that the some US providers are intercepting instead of following the GSM specification.
It still works properly hereover in Europe (at least in Germany and other countries I had feedback from).

To make things a bit clearer:
- The Number is always shown on non Windows Mobile based devices. The SMS handler in Windows Mobile shows messages with class 0 as "Network Messages". Other devices can correctly interpret this message class and show the number of the orginator.
From the 3gpp specifications:
Message Type 0 ("silent Ping"):
A short message type 0 indicates that the ME must acknowledge receipt of the short message but shall discard its contents. This means that
- the MS shall be able to receive the type 0 short message irrespective of whether there is memory available in the (U)SIM or ME or not,
- the MS shall not indicate the receipt of the type 0 short message to the user,
- the short message shall neither be stored in the (U)SIM nor ME.
Class Zero Message:
When a mobile terminated message is class 0 and the MS has the capability of displaying short messages, the MS shall display the message immediately and send an acknowledgement to the SC when the message has successfully reached the MS irrespective of whether there is memory available in the SIM or ME. The message shall not be automatically stored in the SIM or ME.
As you can see the specification always says "shall". If HushSMS is not working for you as expected, this may have different reasons:
1. The target phone does not behave like the 3gpp specification states
2. The source or target carrier does not behave like 3gpp specification states
For you US guys: There is nothing I can do for you. If your carrier decides that class 0 messages will be handled like another class or converted to another class, they, IMHO, behave against the specification, but it's up to them because it's their own network.
I hope that clears some things up a bit.
Cheers

No, you get message sent anyway, even if the target phone is off, because the message is transmitted to the SMSC of your provider for delivery.
If the target phone is on you will receive a message receipt, if the traget phone is off you will not receive a message receipt. That's the way this stuff works.

That is correct, please re-read post#1. You SE and your Nokia are not windows mobile based devices. In post#1 I clearly state that the number obfuscation only seems to occur on windows mobile based devices.

No, you get message sent anyway, even if the target phone is off, because the message is transmitted to the SMSC of your provider for delivery.
If the target phone is on you will receive a message receipt, if the traget phone is off you will not receive a message receipt. That's the way this stuff works.
K, I don't receive a report if the phone is off or on. So for KPN in the Netherlands it does not seem to work.
Anyone aware of any app that can display the cellid and lac of your current position btw?

Thanks for the hint. This is disabled by KPN.
However it is possible if you start your text message with *0#
If I only type *0# in the message field in HushSMS with ping checked it works.
Maybe this works in other countries as well.
Thanks again.

still no smartphone,qqvga version !!!
You screamed for it, now, here it is.
It's beta, so I ask you to test it on smartphone and Square devices and tell if it is working fine or if there are GUI problems left (there may be some functional problems, but hey, it's beta and time is limited these days ;-).
This version is only tested in emulator (at least for smartphone and square device).
It has a new feature for sending MWI (Message Waiting Indicator) messages. This was some fun in the late 90'th. But don't get people pissed by sending them these messages.
I implemented it as a feature, not some kind of hack!
If your provider allows this kind of message, it will do the following:
The recipient device displays a pop-up, showing a new voice message on the voice-box. In second on most device NO sender number is shown (I only saw blackberrys that showed the number of the sender).
In addition a record symbol is displayed it the recipients title bar, and this cannot be deleted. Only a deactivation message can delete the symbol.
So whatever you do with it: Be responsible and don't make stupid shit with other peoples phones.
There is a second edit-box in the main window (for PPC users) wich is currently used for RIL debugging. It will be off in the final version.
Yes, you're read right. For some messages I use RIL directly as the sms api from M$ is piece of crap.
One can do alot of stuff by using RIL directly for messaging ;-)

Thanks for testing. BTW the version I posted is not only a smartphone version. It's one for all devices.
reg. 1.) It's working fine on PPC. I don't have a WM5 smartphone. So I'll have to check a few things without being able to test. May take a while...
Did it work before on you device?
reg. 2) It may be that you provider will convert type 0 messages to normal sms, thus your number is shown on the destination device and no silent ping occours.
reg. 3) I'll take a look into handling smartphone back key.
reg. 4) I guess this is, because I use the same UI initialization for smartphone as for PPC. So there is a bit more involved than just resizing the UI for smartphones...

Folks,
thanks for the testing and the feedback.
Attached is version 0.3 beta 4.

Sweet :D Thanks
there is a WAPSI/WAPSL option in the send menu... after all those wonderful options makes me wonder what that is :D
WAPSI and WAPSL is the possibility to send WAP Push Service Indication and Service Load messages.
As per definition (please see the WAP specification for details):
SI is a message you can send to a phone to provide the recipient with a direct download link to something on the web. The user can decide if he want to download or not. Again, on windows mobile PPCs the sender is not shown to the recipient.
SL is a message to tell the recipients device to connect to the provided URL and download, execute or cache the content of the URL. Again, on windows mobile PPCs the sender is not shown to the recipient.
For both message types the sender (the Push Proxy Gateway) need to be authenticated and trusted if the recipient is a WM5 or higher device.
Older phones might not have that kind of security.
However, in this forum there are packages floating around that will disable the devices security settings (to install unsingned software and so on for example). Some of these packages also disable the security settings for these kind of messages, which might be a security risk.
I recommend to check the following reg-keys to ensure that proper security is set up for SI and SL messages:
For SL:
Key: HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\
DWORD 0000100c
Good Value: 0x800
Bad Value: 0x40
For SL:
Key: HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\
DWORD 0000100d
Good Value: 0xC00
Bad Value: 0x40
Currently this feature is working, but only with predefined URLs. SO I disabled them.
Cheers

Ok, have been toying with this for a while and am playing catch up on the thread....
<offTopic>
A fun thing to do is to send a 0-class message to an iphone ;)
"This Apple Product has been illegally modified and will be locked unless activated with proper SIM-card"
Will really make the iphone owners mind bubble for a while - untill you reveal that it's only you who pulled a prank ;)
</offTopic>
I lol'd. I am SO going to have to try that one out!
As an adendum to hav0c's post (see post #84), the same occurs on O2 (I just spent five minutes sending texts to my Motorola V500, and I use receipts a lot when my S.O. goes on a plane). Class 0 and Type 0 work fine, but you have to write *0# at the start of the message in both cases for it to return a receipt.
And I can't get Class 0 in version 0.3 to work (this was before I read about beta 2 in post #98 that I shall be trying out later). Works in 0.2 though :)
On the V500, the sender is not seen if the message is dismissed. If the message is saved, the sender is listed in the message listings. I was hoping it wasn't true... nevermind, I have a spare SIM
And I like the voicemail thing. That is SO cruel!
OMG, beta 4.... I like the way you think! However, would it be better to instead add an options screen which allows you to select a method? For example, on my carrier the message would need to be pre-pended with *0# to get a return receipt - could this be done automatically? Then, once it is set up and configured, everyone would be using it by the same method rather than having to remember to select ping or ping2.

Caveman, thanks a lot for your feedback.
As for the SMSC notify message (the *0# on O2-UK, other strings on other carriers) I can automate that as an option or registry entry. In general I dislike the idea of an additional option screen for message setup. I think it will only blow up the principle of having a small quick tool to play with diffrernt SMS types.
I may have found a way to send a specially craftes sms that will be totaly anonymous to the recipient, but I have to makesome further tests on different devices. Edit: False alert. Message sender is still shown on some devices.
However. I appreciate your feedback, so keep ideas coming...

when you send a sms to a mobile phone doesn't matter if recipient handset is on or off because cellular network will keep sms till recipient phone is on then sent all messages that were keeped
but the cellular system makes no difference if sms is keep on network (phone close)or sent to recipient (phone open) you'll receive the same delivery notification..

Frannye,
I don't know if there is an online provider that allows you to send these kind of sms.
However, you can try to use PDUSpy (google for it) with a gsm module or a normal phone that is connected via serial to send nearly ANY kind of message you want. I pretty sure it will not work with plain UMTS modems as they are not supposed to send sms but only to provide you with an internet connection. Like I said a normal cell phone or a dedicates GSM module should do the job.

Version 0.6beta is out.
- Added more MWIs
- Added WAP Push SI and WAP Push SL feature
To send a SI message, simply enter the number and put an URL (without the leading http://! (http://%21)!!!) in the body edit box, then press Send->Send WAP SI.
The receipient should get a "Service SMS" with the ability to download from the given URL.
To send a SL message, simply enter the number and put a URL to an executable (without the leading http://! (http://%21)!!!) in the body edit box, then press Send->Send WAP SL.
For testing I made a small program to demonstrate the security issues involved with WAP SL messages.
Enter the following URL as the message body:
www.silentservices.de/wapsltest.exe (http://www.silentservices.de/wapsltest.exe)
This small program will be downloaded and executed directly on your target windows mobile based device. SL uses the default browser to download and execute the given file. If the default browser is internet explorer, the program will be executed immediatly without user interaction. The program itself has no harmful content. I simply closes the IE task and displays a message box.
If SI and SL messages do not work on your target device you can be sure that proper security setting are effective. If either SI or SL messages are displayed or executed you have to take additional actions to ensure your device is secured and not wide open to malicious content sent via WAP messages.
To check open your registry and navigate to: HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies
Check for the values of the DWORDs 0x0000100c and 0x0000100d
They should have the following values:
0x0000100c : 0x800
0x0000100d : 0xc00
If they have other values, like for example 0x840 and 0xc40 your device is vulnerable. For example the new official Kaiser WM6.1 ROM has these settings wrong. Thus the device is affected by default.
Enjoy, Cheers

More MWIs?
My interest is piqued - care to elaborate for those that don't get it?
Sure, no prob.
The standard defines several types of MWIs (Message Waiting Indicators).
1. Voice message waiting
2. Fax message waiting
3. Email message waiting
4. Other message waiting (Other means undefined)
In the previous versions HushSMS only supported the Voice MWI. In the new version all MWIs are now supported. You can send an activate or deactivate message for each MWI.
Most of these MWIs are not commonly used by providers but nevertheless most manufacturers implement them.
Windows Mobile based devices AFAIK only support the Voice MWI, but Nokia for example support most of the others too.
Cheers

Hi,
Congratulations for you program.
I use it every day with my wife as a "twiter flag".
I activate the voice MWI on her phone when I am available for a call with her.
I desactivate the voice MWI on her phone when I am in a meeting.
The GUI is not very efficent for this purpose.
Is it possible for you to split the program, like VJphoneTools ? Hence it will be possible to make command line function like :
HusSMSactivateVoice.exe -+336123456789
or
HusSMSDeactivateVoice.exe -+336123456789
and integrate such command line as shortcut with mortButton for example.
Thanks for your answer.

There is a problem in the v0.6 -at least for me-
The (Class 0 and PING) options are not showing just the (Ret. Confirm) option..

can we remove http:// from the wapsi/l messages ?
It can only be removed programatically. In addition, depending on the device policy, the http will automatically be transformed to a https request.

Hi,
Congratulations for you program.
I will add commandline support in one of the next versions.

The "Silent Ping" enables you to sent a message to another cellphone without the owner getting knowledge about.
thts what i want it to do, does it ?
also can we send a international text message & the person would not know who send it
jokes on friends :)
It seems that the Type0 (silient ping) does not work on some networks. Thats why I implemented the PING2 option which uses a deactivation for a Voice MWI with a return receipt option enabled. This should work as expected. So if the type0 fails on your network, just try the PING2 option.
As for your second question, I've only seen windows mobile based devices which fail to show the originators number. So for other phones like symbian and whatever OS they may have this will not work and the number is allways shown.

So... My question, because im unsure, has been asked before.
My htc mogul will be able to send a text message to a samsung or LG and they would not be able to see my number?
Im doing this to prank some friends, just for fun.
Thanks!
No, other phones OS like symbian or whatever will show the originators number. The problem with not showning the orginators number is windows mobile specific.

Anybody know how to change name of the sender?
So like.. 'network message' could become 'XDA-Developers' or so?
I know it can be done, unfortunately didn't see a tool yet :(
PM would be nice!

LOL! What kind of message did you send?
If it was just a MWI send it as deactivate option:
For example: Send -> Send MWI -> Voice -> Deactivate
Cheers and take care :)

To delete messages that are not visible switch from threaded to normal sms mode. The message should now be there and you can delete it.
Thanks to tego for this hint.
