Tired of the built-in contact list on Kaiser? Well, I was! I was tired of either scrolling or using the stylus to find my contacts. I didn't really like any of the ones I found either, so I made my own -- and here it is! You're the first ones in the world to see it!
http://www.jotto.no/fff/
The users of the Kaiser forum are hereby invited to early testing of Finger-Friendly Friends and the (soon to be) famous DRMWY-Touch keyboard.
Have fun!
Current version: 1.0.1. Finally it's released! New features (more customization and more) will be added in later releases.

v1.0 beta 4:
* Fixed a problem in the GPS positioning on some devices
v1.0:
* Finally it's released! Have fun!!
v1.0.1
* Fixed bug with accented characters in owner name
* Fixed freeze that sometimes occured when using the scrollwheel or Dpad
Important information about debug logging: if you experience problem with the positioning (for example a hang during the "Generating map" phaze), please send me the debug log located at /Program files/Finger-Friendly Friends/ffflog.txt
Really good idea ! If you add a way to dial the mobile number directly from the contat list (like if you release your finger in the far right area after selecting a contact) it would be the best smartdialer imo.
Thanks and keep it up !!!

Hm, I noticed the same when I tried to download with FireFox. Try to download using Internet Explorer. It seems like the web server server is confusing file types.

Actually it's not a button. It's just a message saying that there are more matches. I will make the message more descriptive or make it into an actual button.

Is there a way to use this to replace the original contacts button on the Right bottom - how do you bind this to a button?

I will add this as a user option. Meanwhile, you can do it manually by editing the registry (if you dare):
Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:M SCONTACTS
Change the "1" entry from :MSPOUTLOOK contacts to "\Program Files\Finger-Friendly Friends\FingerFriendlyFriends.exe" (including the "").
You should make a backup copy of the entry before editing it.
Note that the Program Files part of the path may be different in non-english versions of Windows Mobile. For example, the Norwegian version is named Programfiler
Edit: Note that this changes your default contact list to FFF. If you only want to remap the right softkey on the today screen, you can remap it with one of dozens of tools.

You need to match company names also though, as thats what most of the contacts I use daily consist of.

As stated, it's not a button...just a note that there are more matches. It would be great if you could scroll down to see the 'more', but as it is it's already genius. I also can't wait for the keyboard. MS would be crazy not to buy this from you :)
is it possible to make it useable in landscape? thanx.

Thanks for your efforts to create this remarkable program. I have been using it for a day or so and have one major issue with it.
I separate some of the entries in my phone book - mainly businesses, etc, but prefixing the contact name with a Z- (e.g., Z-First Bank and Z-AT&T Cust Svc). This causes those entries to sort to the end of my contacts list, and not be intermixed with family and friends.
When using FFF to find entries, none of the "Z-" entries are searchable - I suspect because the algorithm is looking for a contiguous string of characters. There is no option (that I can see) to enter the '-'. Searching for 'bank' also does not find my bank entry.
This is an excellent concept, and a really good alpha version. I anxiously await your next version. Thanks again for the work so far, and for sharing this app.

Very nice and usefull app. DRMWY-Touch keyboard is even better than I expected. Thanks!
However I have one "issue".
When I select my own name and dial my number from FFF it says:
Dialing:
Unknown Caller:
+316xxxxxxxx
(Dutch Number) When I redial the last call it says the same. (Unknown Caller)
BUT, when I use WM built-in Contacts, select my name and choose to dial my mobile number is says:
Dialing:
My Own Name
+316xxxxxxxx
It shows exactly the same number but dialed from FFF it seems it doesn't recognice the number. Very strange isn't it?
[EDIT] Wow this is strange. I checked again, and now it seems that dialing other numbers don't give this issue. It's only showing up when I call myself. (Of course that was only to test your app.)
I have now idea what's different with my number.

Wow, that's weird. Actually FFF isn't making the call itself, it'w wm6 that makes the call and displays the contact name if it exists in the contact list.
Are there any other characters in your phone number than the plus sign and numbers? Any spaces? Perhaps there are any leading or trailing spaces?

Jahnotto, is it possible to have your app show the all the contacts (like the outlook) before narrowing down the list with the keypad? I find it convenient to just scroll when the name is near the start of the list. Also, it would be great if you could just hit the call hard button when/if the search narrows it down to only one name. Great app, just some suggestions.

jahnotto,
you have truly put out one of the best apps in mobile history. i can't thank you enough. this is one of those apps that makes a phone exponentially nicer to use..
i'll be looking forward to your future projects.. keep up the great work and thanks again..
:D
You could also consider showing the picture that's with each contact but the application definitely seems to be on the right track. Oh and i second the landscape support too. I dont use it to dial from there usualy but if you do have your phone on landscape and start FFF it looks all mixed up and even if you go to portait mode it still looks mixed up. The only solution i saw is to close the app from task manager and try again.

Beautiful app!! Thanks a whole lot.
Great news! I used softkey app to change the right softkey designation to FFF. I did this by hittin the ... button (to navigate to file) and then went to program files > FFF > then selected FFF.exe and it works great!
At least till you you make it a user option.

No, there are no spaces in it, no P(pause), or anything else.
BUT, I noticed a difference
Dialing my Mobile number from FFF is shows:
Dialing:
Unknown Caller:
+316xxxxxxxx W
Instead of:
Dialing:
Unknown Caller:
+316xxxxxxxx M
So, I call my Mobile number from FFF, it shows it as my work number.
I also have a Work number under my name, but dialing that number works correct.
Dialed from directly from "Contacts" this isn't happening.

This app is amazing. For those who run it and do not see thier contacts, starting typing the name of someone in your contacts and the applicaton starts searching. It defaults to a blank screen when first lanched. Also, once you have picked someone, you can then SMS or Call the person. Once done, simply click the OK button and you are back in the search mode. Dragging your finger from right to left steps you back in your search. Clicking clear starts you from the start...
Great application!!!!!

Absolutly wonderful, i have mine set as the right soft key behind the stock "Contacts" button. this app is quick on my tilt, no delays, something i really like is that it stays with my current search if the focus of the screen gets moved to something else.
Only recomendation is with the help menu, maybe include a discription of gestures and features.

I love it, it's the most professional looking add-on on my tilt right now. I just wish it had the 'scroll through the names before searching' feature like the stock one. That would seal the deal in resetting the hard button to it. Right now, I use it as a secondary contact search in my start menu.
Also, if you could use the D pad to scroll through the contact search results...that would be the BOMB.

I found another interesting thing while using the FFF contact/dialer app. It appears that you are only looking at a concatenation of the First and Last name fields.
The entries that I mentioned earlier (Z-xxxxxxx) uniformly have NO first/last name. In all of those cases, the contact name is in the COMPANY name field.
If my assumption is correct, I think it would be helpful/necessary to also search the company name.
Outlook has a field called FILE AS which is either the first/last name combo OR company name... could you build your index of contacts off of THAT field and then search accordingly?

Cool little app for sure, very usable.
I concur with populating all contacts then "narrowing" down from there with search, as well as allowing scrolling through list with pad from start to finish if you choose.
I have been promptly installing this and mapping it as my left contacts button as soon as I flash one of dutty's great ROMS. LOL

This should be the standard contact app on HTC phones - it is very nice!
A couple of issues I have are:
1. It doesn't seem to recognize contacts that I've added in Outlook and then sync'd up via Exchange Activesync. The new contacts were in the standard contact DB however I had to uninstall and reinstall FFF in order to get it to recognize new contacts.
2. I agree on the speed issues. I've updated my Tilt with a Helmi ROM. But FFF takes a good 5 seconds to load for some reason.
I think I'd prefer to see the contacts fully loaded as well and then the list narrowed. But that is a minor matter as the app just works so well already I hate to see it get cluttered with new features.

I think it's awesome.
Things I'd like to see:
1. Tie this thing into the system instead of making it load as a separate app. For example, the smart contacts manager as part of SPB Mobile Shell. That thing is similar (yours is better), loads in a fraction of a second, and doesn't even appear in task lists. It's worth checking out their free trial to examine the functionality.
2. Include contacts photos in the results.
Separately: A DRMWY-Touch keyboard input panel. Sweet!

That's odd. Some (including me) are reporting a startup time of 2 secs or less, while others experience 5-8 secs. Do you have HTC TyTN II or Tilt? Are you using the stock ROM, or have you flashed it? Is your device connected to your PC when you're starting it?
By the way: did you install FFF in the device's main memory or on the storage card?

Very VERY nice app! I would like to make a suggestion to make it even better. What I really like about the (new version of) the regular WM dialer is that you a can search on first AND last name like this:
few-letters-of-first name SPACE few-letters-of-last-name.
Suppose you know many guys called John, and many people called Smith. Then searching John is going to give you a long list of names, with the one you happen to be looking for naturally way at the bottom and off screen; and searching for Smith will do the same. However when you type "Jo Sm" chances are you will narrow the search down to just John Smith and Joan Smorgasbord.
FFF does not have a space button, so I cannot use the above method. So I guess I am saying I would like a space button.
Once again: GREAT prog.

I'm using AT&T ROM on the Tilt. It is not connected to the PC when I'm starting the app. I installed in main memory. It can take up to 20 seconds to load.
Hope this helps troubleshoot. Thanks again for all your hard work.

I'm running my locally (not on SD card) with an AT&T Tilt, Tilt keyboard fix, and Helmi Kaiser ROM.
I wonder if the keyboard fix is the cause? I may try and uninstall it and see how FFF runs thereafter.

I love this app. I hope you will keep it fast and do not add to much function,as it might become bloatware as pocketCM and other PI.
I have tree suggestion to improve it:
- Add a way to go back from a contact to the first keyboard page using a bigger button. Right now, I have to click the OK button, which kind of defeat the point
- Search contact using accented caracters. For example, an "e" should search contact with "é" or "è"
-Search company names. I sometimes take longer to remember the name of a contact than it's company name.
Thanks again for this great idea.

A customizable keyboard is on the todo list (although automatically matching accented letters would be better).

By far the best contact app I've seen developed for Windows Mobile yet. A couple of suggestions:
Allow for scrolling via TouchFlo when there are more contacts that match the search criteria than those displayed on the screen (i.e. the same condition that results in the "more" at the bottom right).
Definitely enable a setting or make it a default function for the installer to modify the registry to make this the default contact application. I don't mind tweaking the registry, but not everyone is comfortable with that.
You have a function to send current GPS location to a friend, how about doing the opposite and have a function to obtain directions from Google Maps from your current location to the Home or Work address of the contact?
In the same direction as #3, I would suggest adding two additional icons to the screen that are labled as "Home Address" and "Work Address". I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to locate some icons that would match the current default set. Clicking on either would display the address and then provide an option to obtain directions to that address from your present location.Other than those suggestions, great application and I'm looking forward to watching its development. I love it!
Just tested this out, and this is an incredible app. I'm using it on a Tilt with stock ROM installed on storage card and FFF takes about 1 sec to load. However, there seem to be a significant delay after I've located the contact and press "send sms". Takes about 5 seconds to open up. No such delay with other options (call or email). Don't know if it's just me and it could be something I installed conflicting here.
Also, it would be nice if FFF could show more than one email address for each contact. Obviously, I can get to the second and third email addresses by hitting "open in pocket outlook" and that works just fine. Just a suggestion.
And I second (or whatever number it's up to now) the search business name function.

I don't think you want to run the old versions, as they will inevitably contain bugs that get fixed in newer versions. Startup time with the GPS feature included will perhaps increase startup time with 0.2 sec. It's not worth the hassle to maintain two version :p

The GPS feature is a cool 'toy', but I agree, in my opinion it's not a core feature. On my Tilt, the first time through it ALWAYS freezes after building the map and will not allow me to send it either via SMS or email. If I back off the screen (OK) and retry, I can get it to go through the motions of sending an email (without freezing), but the map/message never gets delivered... and nothing show in my SENT MAIL folder...

Well the say beggars can't be choosers so I hope this isn't received as criticism. But I have to agree the GPS thing is sort of "neat" but I hope you won't be spending much more time on it. You have the makings of a terrific keyboard for touch screen devices and I'd stay focused and continue to make it even better. Adding finger scrolling, complete list that narrows down, better integration, improving speed/load times, perhaps spinning off a standalone software keyboard replacement, etc.
jomo25
01-11-2007, 04:56 AM
Agree. I will stick with the "old" version as I do not want the GPS functionality. I'm grateful for your creating this and making it available. But since it is your time and app, you can do with it as you please. But IMO, focusing on the contact and keyboard would be my preference.
I used to use PocketCM also, but once the developer included the SMS threading functionality, I decided to remove it. It made the program bigger, and conflicted with the threading SMS software I already use, and he refuses to make the SMS portion optional.
I think FFF is a nice replacement for the functions PocketCM provided, but I definitely wouldn't need the GPS capability.

Jahnotto,
This app totally rocks!!!
With 1,400 contacts on my HTC Wizard, it only takes 250K of RAM, is blazingly fast, looks great, and has hands down the most elegant user interface of any contact manager I've ever seen. My friends with iPhones are going to be rather jealous.
After about 20 seconds of using this, I uninstalled PocketCM. Nice eye candy, but poor interface and almost 1800MB of memory use with that one.
Two suggestions:
1) On the listing window, add "Add Contact". This should only appear when the listing window is clear on entries and should take the user into a Pocket Outlook new contact window.
2) Have an option to preload minimized during PPC startup. Even with FFF's blazing performance, it take a bit to load with so many contacts.
Thanks,
Jeff

01-11-2007, 05:15 AM
The biggest problem with any of these alternative contact managers is the time it takes to load. Even if it's a second, that's still a second longer than the crappy default contacts manager.
However, I think this can be fixed relatively easily. Now, I may be talking out of my ass here, but I think you could preload all the back-end functionality in an executable run on startup, and then just run a GUI to interact with it when someone clicks their contacts button. When the app is closed, just the GUI closes, leaving the back-end ready for its next instantiation. I think this is basically how Slide 2 Unlock 2 does it. 2 executable files are used. That app loads instantly because of it. Check out S2U2.
That and landscape mode are my suggestions. But they're just ways to improve an already great app. I'm loving the software so far. I can imagine how frustrating this constant barrage of requests must be, but it goes to show how much interest your app has generated. Keep up the good work.

Wow...I'm freakin' impressed. Works great on my Tilt, and no lag at all...opens right up, send SMS opens right up, etc...even tried the GPS function, and it had a fix on my location in less than 10 seconds, ready to send via email. Now to set it as my default contacts app...:)
I would however concur with the request to be able to see all contacts when first opening app, and be able to use finger to scroll through them...then narrowing search with the great keyboard. That would make it bulletproof.
i have checked out FFF and i think it's superb so far! great effort.
Pocket CM was removed ages ago, and i'm having to think hard about whether i'm keeping iContact as well!
loading quickly, running smoothly, looks great
Two suggestions:

BEST SUGGESTION YET!
even better than taking us to the Pocket Outlook new contact window would be if you could add this functionality into this app, with the same sleek style and ease of use.
or if that was to bloat this app, perhaps a separate app in your same style?
keep it up, i'm in donating mood :D

Ok, I did a bit more research on the GPS mailing out issue that I reported early this evening. It seems that it sends the email via the OUTLOOK MAIL account - which I have not configured because I don't have access to an exchange server. After digging around for the missing messages, I found them in the outbox for that account.
Why is the FFF app selecting that mail account? It doesn't appear that it can be deleted, either.

Wow, that's a lot of feedback since I got to bed yesterday! How cool! :D
I won't reply every single message (hey, I've got work to do!), but I'll give a few general comment. I am however reading every comment, and I am adding good suggestions to my todo list.
1) I agree that bloatware stinks, and FFF will always be a contact app. However, it shall be the best one! I will never add SMS view, red-eye removal, coffee machine remote control, or other things that are not contact-related.
2) I will however continuously look on how to improve usability (which in my book means "ease of use") and speed.
3) As mentioned in a previous post, I will make it possible to choose which email account to send from.
4) I have started to do some prototyping on a DRMWY-Touch keyboard to replace the built-in WM keyboard. I think that will rock as well. That will of course be a separate application.

If FFF uses the standard WM6 API to connect to the GPS, it makes no difference between the internal GPS and an external connected via bluetooth. But I this that now it only probe one com port.

Great app. More apps should take their cue from the simplicity.
1. Link to GPS apps from the address saved in the contacts. (such as the google maps app).
2. Ability to scroll down the list of contacts that have already been found, using the scroll wheel for this would be good.
3. Show the contact picture. Could be shown in the list (although maybe too small). Should definitely be shown in the individual contact screen though.
4. Sending GPS position. The link generation should not take place until a GPS location has been confirmed.
And many thanks for a great app.

Excellent software, unusable by me (see attach)
Eten X800, VGA screen, default (without any TrueVGA patch).
Keyboard occupies about 2/3 of the screen, with the taskbar, status bar & contacts list taking over the rest 1/3 of the screen.
So:
- keyboard too big, letters too small, too much space between letters, unusable.
- contacts list to small, phone numbers are almost impossible to read
- When I select a contact, a lot if screwed up (see second attach, only the RED lines where added by my - on first line you can see only a little yellow)
My suggestions:
For VGA mode:
- Bigger fonts
- Usable keyboard :)
In general:
- Possibility to import 'contacts' pictures and show it into the contacts list
- Show all the contacts at beginning, then filter by the keys pressed
- Possibility to navigate in the shown contacts with joystick

wow...awesome software.
only two things to enhance would be if there is a way to scroll down. also once you click on a contact and you screw up, you can make a softkey shortcut to go back or cancel instead of clicking on the X on top right. other than that, this takes over my default.
... the keyboard letters should be a little bit bigger
makes them easy to read
... the results are to small, make it bigger (and scroll)
this would result in a faster selection
... the final icons could be in a vertical row and BIGGER
they would be more finger friendly
thanks for your freeware - greetings from Vienna /Austria

Really, really nice work. Just to echo what everyone else is saying, this is by far the best contact manager I've seen on the device. It's a keeper, I think.
The only feedback I have (and again, this echos some of the previous comments) is:
- Please make the font larger when viewing a contact. It's quite hard to read from a distance, and I tend to keep my phone in front of my screen as my contacts database, then dial on my landline.
- Please include an option to easily bind FFF to one of the soft keys.
- A Shortcut on the "clear" screen to add a new contact would be good.
- Perhaps some sort of list of most recent contacts would also be nice? Maybe a button above the keyboard to display your last 10 searches?
- Some way of dialling or SMSing without going "into" the contact would be good too. Maybe a left to right gesture for call, and an L shaped left to right to down gesture for sms?
- Contact photos would be nice, but not essential
Just to reiterate, fantastic app, and I look forward to watching it grow. With a few of the above features, I'd be happy to throw a donation into the pot for this one.

also once you click on a contact and you screw up, you can make a softkey shortcut to go back or cancel instead of clicking on the X on top right. other than that, this takes over my default.
Heh, a lot of folks don't realize that the "OK" key on the bottom keypad (Below the button with the red phone) and the "OK" key on the left side of the phone (below the scroll wheel) both do the same thing as clicking on the red "X" in the upper right-hand corner.
Basically, both of the "OK" buttons will perform whatever action is currently indicated by the icon in the upper right-hand corner. If it shows as "OK" then the "OK" buttons will perform that action. If the icon shows as a red "X" then the "OK" buttons will perform that action.
So, to answer your request, you already have what you need. :)

This is an AWESOME program and the GPS stuff works. I emailed it to my dad using my keychain Holux M-1200. It sends my coordinates as well as a link to a map of where I'm at. So cool. The only problem is it sends out to my Outlook mail which I don't want it to but haven't figured out to change.
The Cons:
- I like the PocketCM all list scroll. However, if that is what causes the slowdown in CM then its fine to not keep it but I do like having an entire list. If they set it up so we can chose options then I would love to see one to open it up like PocketCM finger scroll too.
- Once selecting a contact when the options show up the viewing is 'limited.' By that I mean if their email is even remotely not short it's getting cut off. Would be nice if the length of the string is over X then it will scroll/pan over that length.
- GPS is nice. However, it would be good to have an options screen so that if I send GPS or anything via email I can tell it which email to send through instead of defaulting to Outlook. (Been trying to figure this out.)
- The ability to click 'View Entry' and or 'Edit Entry' like in PocketCM so that it opens the entry in the original contacts.
Most of my cons come from the features that PocketCM have and the Pluses will come from what PocketCM hasn't like loading speed and the GPS sending. Also the fact that pocketCM doesn't allow for internal closing.
If something has been addressed then that is good but I haven't got the time to look through 12 pages of posts right now.
worked great for a week now im having a weird issue, the contact i type shows up fine eg. steve but when i call or text or lookup in outlook it shows up as a different contact eg. ryan. i uninstalled it and reinstalled and it worked fine untill the next soft reset:confused:

i guess loading all photo's in the list would be slow(er). but in the detailed view of one contact, I really think showing the picture would not take so much time, and it's really a benefit.
showing the photo in the list could maybe made possible as in the PCM contact application. The photo's are not loaded directly, but only after all the rest has been loaded, so you don't have to wait because of the photos

I've seen the same thing. My ATT Tilt locks up every time I try to send my location. It gets the fix and reports the location but I can't actually tap on "Send email to a friend", it just sort of freezes.
It will recover eventually but that is the only function I have an issue with.

All these days I was ignoring this thread as I thought this is another PocketCM kind of thing. But after looking into the application today, wow its fantastic. Best application I have ever used.
I have never donated for any member here. But I am going to make my first donation soon for this application developer. Good Job.
Best part is this application gets the GPS fix faster than TOMTOM. That impressed me a lot.

Hey Jahnotto,
Looking really great! One thing I noticed, Regular contacts, no matter how you enter the name (Last, First or First Last) ends up listing it as Last, First in the list. Your program turns it around, say you enter John Smith, regular contacts lists it as Smith, John and alphabetizes under the S's. Yours will alphabetize it under the J's

Jahn:
Just downloaded and installed the Alpha 4 release. As usual, I have a few issues to report:
I realize that the company/File As field for contact name is not yet implemented, but the initial display, before any keys are pressed to initiate the search, shows those entries that have nothing in the First/Last name fields without any contact name. That in understandable since you are not yet accessing either the company name or the file as field. However it was also a bit confusing seeing the phone numbers with no contact name.
Scrolling with the DPAD is quick, responsive and cool - working as indicated.
The GPS positioning function is still a bit funky. The keypad is locked and I am unable to select the SEND POSITON option; the status field reports 'generating map, the position fields (lat/long) are fixed at 0.00000x, and the maplink keeps changing value. I don't necessarily know if that is a problem, per se, but it is behavior that I had not noticed in the Alpha-3 version. I still experienced the screen lockup the 'first time through' the positioning function. Waiting for the device to 'come back', backing off that screen to the contact screen and returning to the SEND POSITION screen allowed me to create the email. This function still appears to require the Outlook mail account, even if it is not configured or active.
Launch time is still very quick on my Tilt.

Second to this, +1.
Contact management only is the best approach!
It will be less complicated for the developer (avoid possible bug) and lighter :D
I was confused by this:
"The users of the Kaiser forum are hereby invited to early testing of Finger-Friendly Friends and the (soon to be) famous DRMWY-Touch keyboard." - post 1 of this thread
I thought FFF was the contacts app.
And soon there would be:
DRMWY- Touch Keyboard.
Sorry for the misunderstanding and high hopes.

Dont confuse :)
That keyboard is still relevant for contact management, isnt?
You need to be able to SEARCH contact for example.
So, you need a GOOD input device/software.
DRMWY keyboard is a nice addition because it HELPS a lot ...
However, what does threaded SMS (or red eye remover? :P) has something to do with "managing" contact?
Hope thats explain.

If you get an SMS from your friend with a map link and you want to open the link on your PC, it's easier to type xlr.us/xxx than to type maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=vads%C3%B8&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=48.287373,64.160156&ie=UTF8&ll=70.077696,29.743595&spn=0.040886,0.125313&z=13&iwloc=addr&om=1

I just installed this app yesterday and have to say it really is excellent.
2 possible amendments / additions I think:
- Its been mentioned before, but when you click on a contact maybe have the full email address in view. Sometime I just need to know what someones email address or phone number is just to be able to tell someone.
- The ability to send Vcards of details (ignore this - I obviously didnt play about enough with software  )
- Ability to send Group Texts.

Oh :( I almost went ahead and carried out the entry. but couldnt figure out how to make a back-up of the entry before editing it
can someone please give a quick idiots guide to this.

1st: great app!
2nd:
- when searching for Gaël it won't find it when pressing the g,a,e.
- it doesn't show all phone numbers in details view, So Home 2 is not shown for instance
- instead of showing in alphabetting order I would prefer having best matches first. So if I type exactly on the "g" i get names starting with a "g" first. and only afther that the less likely (f,t,h,b,v).
- small version of application icon is missing

FFF isn't fiddling with any GPS settings. Unless you're running FFF's positioning at the same time as TomTom, FFF shouldn't affect TomTom at all.

In that case, I got a question for people who use this as their default contacts manager. How do you add new contacts?
Well, there are 3-4 ways:
1. Enter them in Outlook on your PC, and then they will sync to your phone.
2a. From your phone screen, you can still get to the old contact app, by hitting the Contacts soft key at the bottom. (Note: I only changed the softkey shortcut on my Today screen to pull up FFF instead of the old Contacts app. I didn't replace the entire COntacts with FFF. If you did, then maybe the Contacts in the phone will still call up FFF. Not sure.)
2b. You can still call up a number from your call history screen and select it and save it to Contacts. That will start up a new contact.
3. Assuming you didn't delete the original Contact program off your phone, you should still be able to call it up using a direct shortcut to the original Contact app. It should still show up under Programs.

First, and most important, CONGRATS ! this app is nothing but great (already in alpha) !!!
But, as it is still in alpha, I'd like to add some comments and created a short wishlist with -hopefully good- improvements (not sure how many of these already have been mentioned by someone else on the previous pages as I did't read through it all yet):
GENERAL
- create/add a (cool) program icon for the app
CONTACTS LIST
- not sort by "first, last" by default but use Outlook "save as" instead would be a major benefit (or even better add options: let the user choose how to sort)
- for the scroll bar on the right side: the position in the contacts database is reflected here by just a very small line (almost can't see it at all), why not replace it by a round pinhead or so
ACTION OPTIONS
the action options page after having selected a contact is a hammer! I'd have only some few wishes: ...
- first, to be able to select from all (by default max 3) contact email adresses, not just the first one
- on that same page: why not even add a Skype option? In all fields or just in fields like "IM" or "Radio": check if Skype is installed on the device and if the FFF app finds (in the selected contact) an entry starting with "callto://..." (used by Skype) it could forward to the Skype app on the device and start a chat or voice call ... (??) - that'd be more than cool
- also on action options page: "In Outlook" should probably better use the default PIM (it currently ignores changes of the default) instead of using Pocket Outlook, if possible
- after selection "send position": when there is no GPS fix, show "no GPS fix" and provide 2 options: "wait for fix" and "cancel" - now (after trying to create a link) it just seems to hang for a while and then shows an error message "short link failed"
- with 2 more email address entries and one more for Skype, it would be 10 entries (max) on that page, right? There shouldn't be more than 10 anyway as this page is kind of perfect just like it is already.
That "send position" feature is the mega highlight!
FFF OPTIONS
- maybe you could add a "put app on button ..." selection including the 2 today soft keys
- see above: "sort by" selection for contacts list
- see above: to avoid having to detect if Skype is installed ask the user in the options instead; if selected "yes", detect Skype program folder automatically and also automatically add the Skype button in Action Options page when a selected contact is identified to have a Skype ID (see above) - that might help FFF to safeguard a good performance (which is very important)
- add a selection for the entries in the Action Options page: include/exclude buttons (email 1 / 2 / 3, Skype, Send position, etc)
That's it for now.
Do I need to say ... "I love it" !!!!!!

Hi there.
first up; great app! good looking, simple but with a set of great features, just the way I like it!
but! (there is always a but in these posts, isn't there?)
I'm since I'm Swedish, and the swedish letters for ø (ö) and æ (ä) are different, I can't lookup anyone with those characters in their name.
so.. an easy fix for this is to include all the "o" characters for o and all the "a" characters for a (eg. ÒÓÔÕÖŌōŎŏŐő and ÀÂÁÃÄÅÆĄąâãäæåáà)..
that way, people wont be scared for the ø and æ characters either...

Is there a way to make this compatible with IMSMS? When I click on send sms from FFF it sends me to the default messaging inbox. Maybe a reg key I can change? Let me know. Thanks.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
for anyone else thinking about this...
Ditch IMSMS and grab the Palm SMS Threader

Works a thousand times better than IMSMS and works perfectly with FFF too, since it replaces your inbox instead of creating a new one.

Is it possible that you also could specify "hidden" characters for each visible key? (as I tried to explain in my prev. post)

Great app! A couple things I'd like:
1. The option to display the names in Outlook's "File As" or "Display As". In other words, I'd like to be able to have last name/first name OR first name/last name.
2. The ability to specify a particular category and specify a default category. For example, in Outlook I have a category called Favorites. I would like to be able to have just the names in this to show by default.
3. As someone mentioned before, company names are not showing.
Thanks for all the hard work.

Great app. I think with scrolling you've finally beaten out PocketCM for best contact manager out. You should absolutely be proud of yourself for that. One recommendation: give us the option of defining our own keyboard layout. I don't use the Scandinavian characters in the lower right hand corner and I'm sure I could come up with 3 other characters to replace them. Just a thought.
Until then, keep up the great work!

I love how often you post updates. This thing gets better and better.
I think I found a little bug. If you go into the settings and switch the keyboard from "default" to anything else, the default keyboard is no longer selectable. I switched it to sweedish just to check it out, and when I went back to default it didn't switch back. I tried switching to German, which worked. But then when I went to "default" it still didn't switch back. Had to reinstall to get the default keyboard back.

Allow option settings for the GPS coordinates link and do not require users to use your server to send a Google Map. Also allow users to change the default email or sms message body. I know you can change the email after it is created but it would be easier to modify the template.

Again, awesome. thanks for the ENG keyboard. I dont use the GPS feature, so didn't test that out.
Now, I did notice a minor bug. I went to the settings, and changed the keyboard to french (or anything besides default) and then changed it back to default. It stayed as French. And there isn't an English option in the list. But when I stop the program and restart it, it opened with the Eng keyboard again, so I was OK.

just tried alpha 5 on my ipaq WM5 ppc. seems that WM5 doesn't recognize it's certificate so it won't run. would you happen to know a way around this? any input would be very much appreciated.
:)

bugs i have found so far
1.if after typing 2 letters i only have 2 contacts showing. if hit the dpad down i cannot tap on a contact until i hit the dpad up again.
2. also noticed in the same situation if i hit ok to minimzie after i unfreeze the program when i restart the program only the keyboard is showing. the top half of the screen is the today screen.
besides that it looks promising.

Hej Jahnotto

I have a problem with sending an email. I am using FlexMail instead of Outlook. It seems that the configured default email app is not used instead Outlook is called (where the proper Email-Account is not configured).
Also for contact details, it would be very nice if the installed default app would be used instead of Outllook (in my case PocketInformant).
Keep up the excellent work.

Just tried Alpha5 : really cool app ! Congratz !!
Few suggestions :
- add a large bottom button ala-iphone on contact details to return to the list (the [ok] button is too small)
- Menu/Settings/Keyboard > is this just changing the few accentuated letters?
- add a small icon for the StartMenu recent list

just made the switch from PocketCM 0.15 to this
load times are SIGNIFICANTLY faster
with PocketCM my transition time between portrait to landscape is blown out to damn near 10 seconds at times
with FFF there is no noticeable increase in such time (10 seconds to 3-4 seconds is much nicer)
excellent program

Where can I download the latest version?
It seems that @ 1 is on your page not @ 5.
Thanks once again for a great app.

I had tried F5 but it didnt work, so I posted to ask the location. Hitting CTRL + F5 did it.
Whats the difference between regular F5 refresh an CTRL + F5?

F5 is just a reload of the page
CTRL+F5 basically tells the browser to ignore its own cache/temp internet files and load it all from scratch :)
Hope that helps!

I've discovered a problem in the installer on some WM5 devices (which means: I screwed it up!). Alpha 6 will support WM5 for real

Nice app
But I have one question. Is it possible to put the a show/hide option of the item "Send Position" under the Settings menu. This for PDA's who doesn't have a GPS on board.
Thanks

I'm not sure I like the app displaying all contacts on startup - I preferred the other way of doing things. Can we have a toggle?
The main problem I have is that it brings my device to a crawl; I have quite a few contacts.

Hi!
Just installed it... but FlexMail (www.pocketinformant.com) is not recognized for sending mails yet. Would be nice if this could be added.
Best regards,

hi jahnotto,
just tested v1.0 beta 1 on my WM5 ipaq hx2495. like all previous versions, FFF is still not running coz of the trusted certificate problem. is my specfic ppc device the only one having problems of not being able to run FFF v1.0 beta 1?
regards,

I have a specific problem with FFF on my english HTC Tytn II. When I run FFF and go to send my position a 3G or GPRS connection is opened (and stays open), the satelites are found , the position is entered in the field, the status changed to creating map ... but than nothing for 5-6 minutes.
Leaving FFF is not possible , soft reset is the only way out .
Navigon , TomTom and even TrackmeGPS (here in xda developers) works well. Internet both opera and explorer works well
Any idea or does somebody has the same experience ?
