staryon, have you had any crashing with your Fuze? TrackMe has crashed no less than twice since moving to the Fuze. I'm still on the stock ROM because I haven't had time to flash my phone. Is there a log I can send you or look at myself? PM if you would rather there than here.

That's strange. It never crashed on mine. Maybe something got corrupted in your local database (local.sdf) or settings (config.dat) so you can try a fresh install. Actually I have never had news of corruption in those files but just in case...

Ok. I think I'll just use this as the excuse to flash my phone this weekend and Hard-SPL too. Then I'll do a clean install of TrackMe and see how it goes then. I don't use TrackMe all the time because of the battery drain GPS causes.

If you want to use TrackMe more often, might look into a bluetooth GPS unit. I don't know how much the Fuze uses, but the GPS in my Tilt uses 120mA on TOP of the normal power consumption. There's still going to be battery usage regardless with something like TrackMe running, but I suspect you'd see three times the battery life using a bluetooth GPS.

hey guys,
I'm making a change in the server files to have the password encrypted in the database. In order to do that I need to run a function in the database to update them.
While this process is being executed, if you get an 'Invalid password' error just try a few minutes later.
Sorry for the inconvenience
_LEM_
10th May 2009, 05:12 PM
ok, the process is complete.
For people using their own servers please check the Release history for the necessary database changes:

New version available
- Added option to minimize the program when Screen Off is pressed
- Some core functions have been rewritten to support easier future updates
- Fixed error in Geofence parameters. If regional setting was using a comma for the distance, the program would crash
- Auto trip names are now formatted using YYYY/MM/D and current regional settings for the time
I have rewritten some core functions in the program. This shouldn't affect the way it works but if you guys see something that was working before and now it doesn't please let me know!

I think, easier way to implement it may be to stop after seeing 'n' number of NMEA ($GPGGA) messages instead of a timer. I have seen one another application doing it. You may be able to make this as configurable. 50 may be a good default.

Is there a way to use this program without internet access? I can't get it to do any tracking, all that keeps popping up is a note that the program needs to use the remote server. Why does it need to do this?
I just installed it and it seems a great way to track my roadtrip and to later geotag my photos.
However, I am currently abroad and don't want $100's of dollars in roaming costs (insofar there is HSDPA or even GPRS available here).
Is it possible to just let the program record my locations and then later, at home, export it to a .kml?

Yes, you just need to use the program in Offline mode.
Later when you have internet connection you can upload the information to the server and generate the kml files.
Check the documentation for more information.

sudermatt,
I don't plan to be rude, but I need to forward you to the same answers that I gave about this:

I have a big list of things to do. Every time somebody comes with a request I add it to the to-do list even I don't reply the post of that person (as it is mentioned in the FAQ). Depending on the difficulty or how fun or useful is to add it I would work on that eventually.

staryon, I have a little request for you. :D
I was looking for the download package to get the new server package for my upgrades tonight. After running my DB updates I went on the hunt for it and was directed to a great tutorial page.
The request is that that page be broken up a little. Maybe a TOC at the top that links to sections. I honestly left that page 4 times trying to find out about the server package. I keep meaning to bookmark the link for the file, but even after I finally do that I'm sure the follow on users will appreciate the minor tweak. Thanks! :)

First of all: thx for this great program; it works like a charm!!
Then I have a question; I searched this thread but couldn't find it. I have Trackme setup with "Clear trip name when program exits". However, if I enter the web interface, all my (old) routes are still there. Is there some way that I can delete the routes that I think are of no more interest to me?
**EDIT: found it already; I thought I could do it in the webinterface but it has to be done inside the app itself..**

I have a Sprint TouchPro and REALLY REALLY REALLY want to try out this program. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it to recognize my GPS using the Intermediate GPS Driver.
I've tried to define the Port in the GPS Admin section as Port 4,5,6.
I've set the GPS port in the software to match the port selected.
I've tried to launch another program (google maps) to get the GPS fix then launch Trackme.
Nothing seems to work.
Has anyone gotten Trackme to work on a Touch Pro?
Is there something I might be missing.
If so, can you please respond with some instructions?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi, I've read all the docs and the FAQ, and to be sure Googled all kinds of variations on 'TrackMe Offline', but I can't seem to find an Offline mode.
I've told it to Always store offline data, but whenever I press the Start button, it tells me "This op requires to use the remote server ...".
I'm assuming the program will only start looking for satellites when the Start button is pressed? Because it's not finding any (- whereas other programs do). BTW, I use HTC Diamond 1.
EDIT: now I see I can't select internal GPS... hm.
In theory, reading the docs and browsing the menus, this is the ideal program for me, it's just so frustrating I can't get it to do anything :(

Yes, you need an account so you can upload your data later.
Just enter a username and password. Since you are working in offline mode, you account won't be created until you decide to upload your data.

I had problems at first, but then realized I simply did not click on the green arrow start icon.
What the heck is "GPS Intermediate driver"?
My Touch Pro has never needed any special driver to work with any GPS app or mapping software.
EDIT. Just read a little, then looked in registry, and it is enabled and used by default with our WM6.1 phones. Seems the posts that discuss this were made for use with WM5 although I could be wrong since only spent a couple minutes searching, and since no issues here with WM6.1 and GPS.
Settings here that work fine are (not sure if all are required, but it works):
In Sprint Touch Pro settings, external GPS,
programs = com8
hardware = none, 4800
access = checked, manage GPS automatically.
In Trackme:
Menu/config/source =
Cell ID not checked since it does not work with Sprint
GPS checked, com8, 4800, 1 sat lock required.
Also recently changed to box checked for disconnect/connect GPS power saving.
I suggest you do not use power saving until you confirm it all works.

Well, the experiment was only partially successful. I've got a nice collection of points, but when I want to export these to a .kml - even when I specifically check ONLY 'Destination location file(s)' as Local, not Remote - TrackMe makes a data connection.
I don't even want to know how much that has already cost me.
So please, I need your help again: how do I create a .kml on my phone, that I can load into my computer to use, without ever making a data connection with my phone?
Cheers!

KML/GPX files are generated on the server, so offline data need to be uploaded first. Offline data is no valid data for anything until you upload it.

You have probably missed one or more database updates on your server.
I suggest you to make a search on this thread by "ALTER TABLE" so may find what updates are missing.
Since a few versions ago I always post the database changes in the Release history of the program (http://luisespinosa.com/trackmerelease_eng.html). However, your problem seems to be older than when i started doing that, so you will have to try to make that search.
Good luck!

Staryon,
Trackme no longer stays in memory after exit, since I have changed the GPS settings. It now connects to my 'program port' and no longer to the hardware port at a baudrate of 4800, where e.g. TomTom needs to be connected to the hardware port. Thanks for all your support and this wonderful program.

That is great. I really checked that issue several times but I couldn't find anything. Maybe it's a problem with drivers or how WM manages the memory when accessing COM ports but who knows... I'm glad it works now!

Hi,
I used to use TrackMe last summer for the fun of it and it worked great, I've now updated my phone (HTC Diamond) and reinstalled the latest version of TrackMe and it doesn't work.
When the program aqquires a GPS lock it says Error CheckGeofence: [ IncludeLocation ] and after storing an offline position it immideatly says Error: Unidenitfied error [ CellID ] and then it goes on like that forever and I cannot save the any positions or upload the .kml fil to the server I'm using.
Any ideas what might be wrong?
Cheers Daniel
Update:
Solved the problem by uninstalling the program and then reinstalled it again.

Hi chinloyfock,
You need to install the Microsoft Compact Framework 3.5 and the SQL Server Mobile 3.5
You can find both in the first post of this thread.

There's a TOC, it's a javascript menu on the left? Does it not show up?
I have to write something for people who have disable Javascript or if for any reason their browser does not support it.
I would love to improve this first release of the tutorial I made few weeks ago but I have no time for now, I'm never home :(.
I promise I'll go on improving the tutorial asap.

Hello and thanks for this great software and all the documentations.
Would it be possible to send a hash of the user's password to request.php rather than the password in cleartext (I can modify the PHP, but not TrackMe) ?
What about a login/hash protection for the other requests too (e.g. cellid, gm) ?
I found the whole TrackMe solution much more advanced than other (non-free) solutions, but lacking on the security side.

Unless we have a SSL connection to the server it's not worth it.
If I send the password encrypted a potential attacker can trace it and retrieve that encrypted password. Then he just needs to use that to get access to the user records. If you think about it it doesn't make a difference in sending the password in clear text or not. Of course, if we have a SSL connection everything changes.
Passwords are stored encrypted in the database though.

i'm not talking encryption, it would indeed be useless, but about identification.
you could, for example use a hash of the password salted with the coordinates so that only that user can update his data. even if an attacker gets the hash, it would be useless and it would not get the pass.
SSL support would be a plus, but hashing the pass (with salt) or a simple data checksum would be welcome. At least you could be sure about the integrity of the data and not reveal the password.

Thanks for the hint.
Could you provide an example?
You have to keep in mind that we need to reverse the process on the server side, so we can extract the password and comparing it with the one stored in the database. On the other hand, whatever calculation you do on the server side will be known by everybody because the PHP web pages are public.

Client has Coords X, Y, password P, Salt S
Server has MD5(S+P) as HASH in database
Client sends X Y MD5(MD5(S+P)+X+Y)
Server compute MD5(HASH+X+Y) and compares it to the MD5(MD5(S+P)+X+Y) sent by the client.
If MD5(HASH+X+Y) = MD5(MD5(S+P)+X+Y) then
- it's the good pass, without knowing it
- the coordinates are not tampered
You could replace Coords X Y by any part of the data you want to be sure of the integrity.
It doesn't guarantee that it's not a replay of a previous entry and it doesn't guarantee that it's our user. For full user ident you'd need a challenge response sheme, but it get a bit complicated.
The password is never visible and the data integrity is guaranteed.

Client has Coords X, Y, password P, Salt S
Server has MD5(S+P) as HASH in database
Client sends X Y MD5(MD5(S+P)+X+Y)
Server compute MD5(HASH+X+Y) and compares it to the MD5(MD5(S+P)+X+Y) sent by the client.
If MD5(HASH+X+Y) = MD5(MD5(S+P)+X+Y) then

Thanks for that example.
By doing that we wouldn't need a Password column in the db, right?
It would be replaced by that HASH value.
One more thing, if I understand correctly the client should still send the username in plain text so the server can retrieve the HASH value for that user. Is that correct?
I will add it to the to-do list. Thank again

It was the issues of JS and me not looking over the left side. I normally use FireFox with NoScript.

Thanks for that example.

It's not mandatory, but that method would indeed render the storing of the (encrypted) plaintext password in the db useless, as you don't need the password, just the HASH.
One more thing, if I understand correctly the client should still send the username in plain text so the server can retrieve the HASH value for that user. Is that correct?
The username is not needed anymore but it's easier to deal with a username after identification than with a hash, so it's a good idea to keep it (even if it was only for display reasons).
Thank you very much for taking my proposals into consideration. If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to ask.

ouch man, I love this tool.
I got two questions tho:
is the kml/gpx file of a track stored locally? I'd like to be able to save them and top open them later in a tool that allows graphical display of my track, without uploading the data to a website.
are there plans to create a live feature to show the current track in a google-maps-a-like plot on the PDA? That is without uploading it first. That would make this tool perfect for my biketrips :)
I am very interested in the development of the webviewers as well.
Keep up this good work!

The kml/gpx files are always generated on the server, so your data needs to be uploaded first. Once you generate the kml/gpx file you can download it to your PDA automatically.

I don't think so. The reason is because there are already many tools for live tracking on your PDA and TrackMe is not really a navigation tool.
However, who knows, I may change my mind in the future and add that feature! ;)

Just a quick question (I've skimmed the whole topic, but didn't found the answer...) - when using without GSM and only cellID info is being used does track me interpolate location from a few towers and their signal strength? If now, would id be somehow feasible to add/achieve?

I think, easier way to implement it may be to stop after seeing 'n' number of NMEA ($GPGGA) messages instead of a timer. I have seen one another application doing it. You may be able to make this as configurable. 50 may be a good default.
Thanks for the idea. I think I already have too many timers inside the program :)
Staryon, humble request and question. Do you plan to implement this soon. The GPS kills battery around 10 - 15% an hour if inside the building when GPS is getting locked. I looke around, none of the app does this. I tried opening and closing ports using perl. I am able to do it on windows, but not on WM. Please consider inplementing the closing the GPS if locked not achived in certain number of NMEA messages. This will save lot of battery.
Thanking You.

No, I don't do that. Basically I just get the MCC,MNC,LAC and CID parameters and I pass that to Google, OpenDB or whatever database you are using. I'm not sure how they do the calculation internally.
However, if somebody has some information about triangulation and how it can be done with that information that I get from the phone provider please let me know.

I think they only search for location on cell tower with given identyfication and put it on map. Getting more precise location would involve quering for several cels (with signal strenght i presume?) getting their coirdinates back and then calculating position based on that information. It would require more data to transfer I suppouse.
Doing a quick search I've only found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM_localization#Examples_of_LBS_technologies (don't know if it would be userful...)

Hi,
I used to use TrackMe last summer for the fun of it and it worked great, I've now updated my phone (HTC Diamond) and reinstalled the latest version of TrackMe and it doesn't work.
Update:

I have one problem. As You may see on picture on link below the problem is when TrackMe send offline stored track points to server it stops recording GPS position, so i'm getting position gaps (red circles on picture).
Is there a way to fix that or i have maybe setup TrackMe incorrectly.

Basically, copy the original "TrackMe" folder from Program Files to another location, uninstall, delete the original "TrackMe" folder from Program files, reinstall the app as normal. Then copy the old config.dat file into the new "TrackMe" folder.

What happens when you click on 'Upload offline positions'?
Does it tell you that no offline positions are available?
TrackMe does not lose any positions. Maybe you were in an area with a poor reception and your GPS couldn't get a fix. Also if you are in a phone call your GPS will probably disconnect.

I never upload positions manually because i set TrackMe to automatic upload. Only when i come at the end of my route and when i stop tracking TrackMe ask if i want to upload offline positions recorded from last automatic upload. And it uploads it after i answer yes.
In my situation, as you can see from picture few posts before, gps reception is lost every 2 minutes, exactly when TrackMe is set to automaticaly upload track. I didn't receive any call in that period and the problem isn't poor gps reception because i used that route many times for testing and i didn't have those gaps until i began to use Trackme with automatic upload... I've tried different timings for automatic upload and those gaps are directly connected with it, every time TrackMe starts to upload tracks it stops recording gps position...

thanks for the explanation. Yes, that should be normal. When you are in the middle of uploading offline positions, TrackMe won't read any more positions until this has finished. So it depends how short is your upload interval and how fast if your internet connection. You will have to adjust those parameters to make it work better.
frotna
11th June 2009, 08:57 AM
I have been playing with those upload timings and i think that 30s which is minimum interval timing should be even less. Can you allow in future versions that timing to be set on 3s (as minimum gps timing). Therefore we will get situation that after each point taken from gps TrackMe will be able to upload it and gap would be just when uploading one point, just a few seconds. In my situation i set gps to collect points every 3s and to upload it every 30s and in that period TrackMe collect 10 points and gap when it uploads those points is big because it must upload 10 points. I think if we set that upload time to 3s the gap would be smaller because TrackMe would need to upload only one point...
That's my guess only...

That has nothing to do with TrackMe. It depends on your GPS and how much time is on.
If you don't want to keep your GPS on all the time, just select the option to disconnect between uploads.
You can also turn off the screen when using it to reduce the battery usage.

In order to generate a KML/GPX file you need to have data in your SQL tables.
If you already have one of those files (and it's not empty) is because your tables already have some data.
As I mentioned in the FAQ I didn't write the web viewer so I cannot give you too much help on that. Hopefully other users will be able to give you more information.
Just in case, did you make a search in this thread by "One or more TrackMe tables in your database are empty". That question has been asked several times and maybe you can get some useful information from there.

With regards to the config data. Having an option within the program to export the config settings to a user specififed location would make it much more user friendly and intuitive!
ok, send me a pm with your username and password and I will try to export all your data into SQL statements. However, you will have to find a way of putting all that in your database manually.

I hate to ask this sort of stupid question here, but here goes... Does anyone know an iPhone app which can upload data to an arbitrary server? The format of it I don't care about if I can't control that, I can write something intermediate that'll 'translate' for TrackMe's web API.
My wife just got an iPhone and it'd be nice if she could use the TrackMe web service as well. I know there are serious limitations in that regard (background apps) but it'd be handy. If there's anything and anyone is interested I'll give out any code I write to get the data into TrackMe.
Reminds me, I owe Staryon some documentation my Geotagging stuff which I've never gotten to. :(

Staryon, I Was just wondering if you're still thinking of porting Trackme to the IPhone. I am using Trackme for more then 1,5 year and am still very satisfied with the trackme application. The only thing is I'm going to the new Iphone in a few months and haven't found any apllication like Trackme in the Appstore. There are some yet ther isn't any app that can match Trackme!

Hi Paulie,
Yes, it's very possible that can be done. Unfortunately I have been working on other projects for the last few months and I haven't even had a chance to even update TrackMe with new features. I will post any news about possible conversions here.

My wife has an iPhone now so I was looking into apps similar to TrackMe for it and they all have the same serious limitation; they have to be actively running to work.
Apple seriously needs to work on background apps.. I'm sure it must be terribly difficult, coming from a Unix core which..... wait.
They're just waiting for the next iPhone, then pretend the previous versions can't do it.. like MMS, video, etc..

Anyone using GPSToday? If you're like me, you can't have enough GPS related programs... GPSToday is just fun for quick access to maps, closest contacts/POIs, and now they have public sharing of your location, POIs, etc... This last function works on their website, which works fine, still in beta, but works okay.. If anyone isn't using GPSToday, or are using a version older than 0.9.9.8, drop them a line and get the 0.9.9.8 Beta. It's great. I personally use the Today screen version, but their full screen version works well too.
But personally, I keep everything on TrackMe. So that leads to another nice feature of GPSToday, every time it gets your location it can log the information to a file in CSV format. I've had it logging for the last month or so, and it does a pretty good job of it. So then it occurred to me that I could use that data in TrackMe, so I wrote a Mortscript which parses the file and uploads the data to TrackMe.
It works well, and does some connectivity checks before starting, and checks the result code of each upload. If it fails to get a proper return code from TrackMe's web API it re-tries 3 times then exits if it continues to fail. As it uploads data to TrackMe, it outputs the lines to a separate file so the original file can be deleted so it doesn't upload the same data over and over, and next time GPSToday logs a point it just creates its file again, and you have the full log from GPSToday available if you need it.
Set up user, pass, path to your GPSToday CSV file, GPSToday filename, and your TrackMe URI (http://yourdomain.com/trackme) or even Staryon's TrackMe Web if you like (and he is okay with it?). There's no special files needed on the server, just uses the standard TrackMe API.
It's pretty fast to run 15-20 points, or what I typically see on a daily basis.. I had 600 in my file, so it took about 10 minutes on HSDPA on AT&T.
If anyone is interested, drop me a line! Once I run it for a while and make sure it's working consistently and reliably, I'll attach it here for future reference.

You can use the program in stealth mode. There are a couple of issues that needs to be fixed but the main functionality is there.

Feature request: "Time to wake up alarm" for riding the bus
I've been looking for something that will alert me when I'm withing 1/2 mile of my bus stop since I often fall asleep listening to music from my Tytn II. I tried to use the geofence capability of trackme to do this but all it can do is send an email or text message and the alerts need to be reset. Maybe something like this already exists, I just can't find it.
You would need to be able to configure it:
* set location by text entry or by current GPS location
* set distance away to trigger alarm (500 meters, 1 mile etc...)
* set interval (not really necessary I guess but it should check every 30 seconds or so)
* set time boundry for alert (day of week, time of day start and end)
* set alert type (vibrate, play mp3 etc...)
* I really like how trackme can run in the system tray - and you'd need to be able to turn off the screen just like Trackme can do with the right soft key

I had in mind in adding a new notification type, an alarm, for geofence.
This may help you a little bit with your problem.
I don't plan to add new features to the geofence at the moment.

The info was shown eventually, but a few hours later. The programm was terminated after the upload. So it couldn't upload the info later!

I often see a long delay when using google maps, while it still shows old uploaded trip, instead of "Live Tracking".
To confirm all is working right, I check it again with Google Earth, and current "Live Tracking" info does show up instantly there, and old trip is gone, (as desired).
Back to Google maps, and old trip is all that is still showing. Changed browser setting to always get newest every time I visit web page, yet delay still exists only with Google Maps. Eventually it works correctly. Might take 30 minutes or more. Refresh page several times and sometime it works, but then afterwards, it sometimes goes back to old trip, while not showing Live Tracking. Sometimes deleting old trips seems to correct the issue as well. Google Earth always fine and instant.
Using IE7 and IE8, which I don't think is tested as much with this app.
EDIT: Just checked now and it works fine. It might have been a bug with Google Maps that has since been corrected. Noticed issue a lot a couple weeks ago.

Unfortunately, you are right, it did not solve my problem. Would it be possible for you to use a different approach to handling the GPS. A lot of of other GPS software is ok when using the socalled Windows managed access to the GPS. I assume their software calls the Windows API for GPS and get all the information they want. Just thinking....
Still thanks for your software, I don't use it as often as I want, but sometimes I can live with a softreset before continuing to do other work.

Hi everyone,
Hi,
Let me notice a disturbing bug that exists on HP iPAQ 6915 - everything is working great when device "sees" satellites but when the signal is lost for a - and after a while some satellites is found again - application crashes:
TrackMe.exe
FormatException
w System.Double.Parse(String s, NumberStyles style, IFormatProvider provider)
w System.Double.Parse(String s, IFormatProvider provider)
w m.at(Byte A_0, Boolean A_1)

w Microsoft.AGL.Forms.EVL.EnterMainLoop(IntPtr hwnMain)
w System.Windows.Forms.Application.Run(Form fm)
w d.a()
I'm using real-time tracking with my own www server in 15 seconds (also when 30 sec) interval connected via GPRS - applications craseh only when signal is lost and when it is found. There are options:
Start tracking when applications start - enabled,
don't store consecutve points - disabled
Miminum locked sattelites required: 1
i'm using GPS (cell ID disbaled) on COM7 - trying with different baud rates.
Have you noticed this bug before ?
Thanks for help, used version of trackme is 5.4.8.143 - regional settings: Polish.
UPDATE:
Today I have made addtaional tests - I've changed regional settings to english - nothing has changed (bug exists)
more notifications:
1. When I start app inside a building and no gps signal is available app reports that minmum is not reached but work - only when I came out and some sats if found - crash
2. When I start outside - somethinmes it crashes but sometimes in works - so the bug isn't cleary repeatable. However situation from 1. cases crash evertytime.
3. Miminum locked sattelites required - I ve tired many options (1,3,4,5) - same problem

Hi,
I must first say that it's a fantastic app! :D
Works like charm in the free server so I tried to create my own server as well, just to experiment. Everything went fine, I installed as mentioned in the read me.
After I try to open my page located at http://trackme.krishanu.in which is a subdomain redirecting to http://krishanu.in/TrackMe, I get the following message: One or more TrackMe tables in your database are empty. You must generate data by running the TrackMe application on your Windows Mobile device before the map display will work properly.
So I fire up my mobile client and put the following value there:
username: database_user
password: following_password
IP address: krishanu.in
port: 80 (untouched, need to change?)
Root Folder: TrackMe
Ext: php (Untouched)
Now when I start a GPS lock and then I try to upload stored positions in offline mode I get following error message: Unable to upload position:Invalid URI: A port is signaled with ":" but could not be parsed.
Now as you can realize that I am in deep water now and have no idea whatsoever about what could be possibly wrong.
Any help?
BTW, I thank you again for this great app!

On to my question. I plan on going on a vacation, where it's likely I won't have access to internet for a while. During this vacation I'll travel about 4000km. Can you tell me how big (roughly) the database with saved positions will become? My PDA has about 100MB of free storage available. Thanks a lot!

To be honest... I have no idea. However, in my experience the database doesn't take too much space.
Something that you can do if you run out of space is the following:
Before you start your trip make a copy of the file local.sdf to a pen drive or similar. Now, if in the middle of the trip your local.sdf becomes too large, you can rename it to local001.sdf, copy it to your pen drive and copy the original local.sdf from your pen drive to the PDA. Repeat this process many times as necessary.
Later when you are ready to upload your information, do the opposite for each one of the files until all the information has been uploaded.
Hope it helps
PS: Please let us know when you finish your trip how was everything. I'm just curious to see how much space it took. Thanks

I run the software... says Reading current Cell ID...
searching google for 460-0-6243-4193
it connects via Edge to the internet,
then it comes back with
"No position found in database for Cell ID"
I have tried several times and always got this result.
I'm in China for those of you wondering... Shanghai to be more specific.
But Google maps mobile works just great over here.
Can't figure out what I may be doing wrong!
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi joshzzz,
Google Cell ID Database has not been working for the last few months. It seems to be either a problem with my web hosting or Google changed something.
I tried contacting my web hosting but they say that nothing was changed.
My only solution is to try to debug it and see what's going on, but at this moment it's just impossible for me... :(
However, I think OpenCellID database works ok. Have you tried with this one?

No such luck! Same result. Hmmm... I won't be surprised if it's not found on OpenCellID... I mean it's China! Would have been great if Google's database worked.
Thanks man for a great app. Hope I can use it someday over here.

Thanks for this app. My wife and I have been looking for something just like this. We tested it out and seems to work perfectly on my Tilt. I do have one question though. We did a test route and I would like to delete the information. I deleted the content out of the web link folder from goolge earth, but it just gets re-downloaded at the next update interval. Is there anyway to delete unwanted information off the server?
Thanks again,

Hey :)
I really like where this is going. Tried the app today, but got a couple of weird points - and for some reason it crapped before the trip was finished. What I did was edit the KML and tried to import it, but it doesn't seem to let me do that.
Any way to get the correct data in? Also, is there any way the app can attach my pictures from the trip?
Cheers!

You probably have Live Tracking enabled. Just go to Config->Live Tracking and disable 'Generate KML file'
On the other hand, if you want to delete a trip you can go to Tool->Manage Trips and delete it from there.

Hi,
I'm not sure if I understand. Why are you editing the KML file?
You cannot import KML files in TrackMe.

Thanks
Just completed a 2800 mile motorcycle trip (4500km) with updates every 9 minutes, and the local.sdf file size is 168k. I was worried about if it would work with that many waypoints in Googlemaps (after exporting all dates range), but it displays fine, with no lag or jerky problems (IE6/IE7/IE8 in WinXP).
I did not start with a zero length file, so I guess other trips are included, which puts distance at probably closer to 4000 miles (6500km).

Well, I had to edit it as the signal "jumped" and placed some weird points tens of kilometers away from where I was actually at. I had to remove these. Also, I wanted to remove some points not interesting for the route...
Is it possible to upload them to your db along with some pictures?

No, KML are just exported files from the database and cannot be imported back.
However, you can assign pictures to positions that are already in the database.

Cell Info is not very accurate so that can be the reason.
If you are using only GPS, remember to increase to number of minimum required satellites for a better accuracy.

Sorry if this question has been already answered but I didnt find anything browsing/searching the website and that thread.
I recently tried to use the upload picture function but always ended with the "time difference" error.
I guessed it was because of the photo file time or exif time stored in the file vs the last GPS position time stored.
The default setting for the time difference being 180s, I tried to changed it to much larger, however the result is always the same.
So, here are my questions:
- Would this error be triggered by something else ?
- Would there be a way to remove that check, so no matter the time difference, the photo would always upload to the last GPS position stored ?
Note that I did setup a server on my own.
Everything else is working really great. Great app!

I seem to be having an issue getting this program to work. I've followed (the somewhat dated) guide on how to setup your own server. Configured my client on the phone and turned it on.
The web page shows me
"One or more TrackMe tables in your database are empty. You must generate data by running the TrackMe application on your Windows Mobile device before the map display will work properly."
I can confirm that some of the tables did indeed get filled. It lists a few locations that my phone has sent to the server and my username that i created.
However the CellID and Trips databases seem to be empty. Any idea why this is?
Thanks in advance

I cannot help you with the first question because I haven't written that part but I suggest you to make a search by 'One or more TrackMe tables...' because that has been asked a few times.
CellID table will be empty until you populate it with some information.
Regarding the Trips table... Are you sure that you have specified a trip name when uploading positions?

I there a log I can look at to see why TrackMe crashes when I'm using it with TomTom running? Seems that if I have both programs running periodically TrackMe will crash. I get no indication either, just stops updating. Last night I was driving back home from a road trip and TrackMe ran flawlessly all weekend until coming back home.
It crashed a little ways into the trip home. I can't say it was TomTom that did it, but it seems to be the only common thing going when it does crash. It's not a big deal, just sucks to miss part of a trip because it crashed and I didn't know it.

Thank you for your response,
I was able to get the app to work with the custom server, somehow switching it to your server and then back to my own caused it to generate the information in the database.
The application worked fine all day yesterday with the Cell ID option (getting the cell id from google) that however has stopped functioning as of today. and it seems that the other cell info providers also don't know any of the cell towers that i pass on a daily basis.
None the less this is a great application!

Google Database stopped working on my server a few months ago.
I still haven't figured out what has changed. I contacted my web hosting and they say nothing was modified. I'm afraid I will have to find a workaround to make it work.
However, it seems that still works for people using their own servers.

I set up my own server and that works great and the program is running fantastically. My trips show up online and I can access them from any computer. The problem I am having is downloading a kml from the server. I get the message: "Not Logged in or this is not a private system" every time I click on kml download. This happens on the server as well as on a different computer. Any ideas?

I've noted the same, but I personally think it's a memory constraint rather than specific to a certain program. I actually have written a mortscript which does a loop which checks for TrackMe. If running, it logs the date/time and memory free on the system, sleeps for a while. If trackme is not running, it logs date/time/memory, restarts trackme, etc..
Of course, since writing it I haven't seen much problems, but there have been times I've restarted TrackMe 4-5 times on a trip, and each time I've had quite a bit of data missing because it wasn't running before I noticed it.
I was hoping I would find the memory creeping down really low, I should try experimenting some more. I mainly notice it if I try to use iGO8, which uses LOTS of ram.

Good to know I'm not the only one then. This last time it was after TrackMe running for 2 1/2 days straight. TomTom wasn't added until the last part about the time TrackMe crashed. I'll try to pay attention to the memory next time to see what it shows. Also, why TrackMe? Why not crash TomTom or messaging?
My guess is because TrackMe is in the background running while TomTom is normally in the foreground.

That's a good question for someone who knows anything about WM beyond just using it. :) I see WM do this stuff all the time though, random apps just disappear. I see FlexMail do this sometimes when running TomTom or iGO8, sometimes ArielBattery goes (it's like 1.5k of ram!!!!???), etc..
You could be right, WM might decide it has to kill *something* and it starts with background apps.

I just returned from my trip. It was about 3000 kilometers, and I made a local file (local01, local02 etc) per day. In the end every local file is about 300kB. I have TrackMe set to make a record every 10 (or 15, can't remember) seconds.
Loading and uploading all the seperate locals to the TrackMe server right now.
When I try to login to http://luisespinosa.com/trackme/index.php using the username and pass I use in TrackMe it doesn't let me in. Am I doing something wrong?
I also let TrackMe make a note of every GPS location in a text file. That one is about 6.5 MB. Any programs around that I can load this file into?

Good to see the app still pushing forward Staryon! I moved to an iPhone a few weeks ago and haven't looked back with the exception of this application. The iPhone has an app for everything except TrackMe.
Staryon, any chance of porting this to the iPhone??
I do have some glimmer of hope from InstaMapper.com but they don't have anywhere near the feature set. Despite that I already worked out a display for their data here:

In any case, congrats on what continues to be a successful product!

Not forgetting the fact that iPhone apps are not allowed to run in the background, right? I hear some mitigate this as best they can by ensuring they are running 'on top', but during phone calls, etc, they stop working. Silly limitations...

Not forgetting the fact that iPhone apps are not allowed to run in the background, right? I hear some mitigate this as best they can by ensuring they are running 'on top', but during phone calls, etc, they stop working. Silly limitations...
This is the big thing keeping me from going to the iPhone for this app.

New version available!
- Added Live Map (this is accessible from the 'Show Current Position' button)
http://luisespinosa.com/images/trackme/livemap.jpg
The map is updated automatically every 30 seconds. You can also click on the button located at the bottom right to update it manually.
very cool, when will be able to see my closest buddy on this map? :D

By the way, I plan to release version 6.x soon.
Nothing new... it's just I made a lot of cleaning in my code and have reorganized everything for making updates easier.
But first I have to test it...

I would like 2 things.
1) The ability to send a destination location to the web viewer from my phone.
Say someone is following my movement.
which is great, but they dont know where im going.
This way they can also see my destination, and how far away i am.
2) The ability to mark a destination on the webviewer.
again this way i can see where someone is, and see how far they are.
now i dont mean how far they are with distance and this and that.
just a simple destination dot, and visually you can see the gap closing.
as well, if i am heading somewhere, i can send the location to the web viewer, and a dot will appear. then the viewers can see where i am in real time and where im going.

Dear jcleek,
One quick question please.
May I use SQL Server 2005 instead of MySQL for the installation package in order to TrackMe access my server???
Is there any problem???
Thank you in andvance

Staryon, thanks for this app, it is awesome. I like the new feature which allows you to see your "live" location on google maps from your phone.
I have a couple of requests/questions:
- Is it possible to show the live gps trail from your phone?
- I would also like to be able to see the live track of someone else from my phone.
- I second the request for being able to show the destination.
- I also like the request to see your friends locations.
- Is it possible to save the tracks in Google Earth and view them individually later?
Keep up the good work on this app, it keeps getting better and better. We are putting it to the test this weekend. We are going sailing and my wife wants to be able to see where we are while she is on land.
Thanks!

New version available!!
- TrackMe will detect if connection to bluetooth GPS has been lost.
- Main core functions have been rewritten to support easier future updates. Program is now better structured and a lot of cleaning has been done.
- GPS is now independent from Tracking. You can start your GPS without tracking. This is useful if you want to force an update or use Live Tracking on a map without tracking.
- Fixed problem when using Cell ID tracking on my server and using Google db. It stopped working a couple of months ago, so I added an workaround to make it work (something must have been changed on my server configuration)
- When uploading a position, the timer is reset. This is useful if uploading a position takes a long time. In previous versions if this happened, 2 positions were uploaded almost consecutively.
- Tons of fixes!
Hopefully this version doesn't introduce new bugs. However, I have changed so many things that who knows...
If you guys find something that was working before and it doesn't with this one, please let me know.
Enjoy!

Great the new Version!
Here 2 things that would be great:
On the Live Map a sign that show what used: GPS oR CellID
An an easy change for different server. (p.e. Select between you Server and a private one)

staryon, I have not paid much attention to Trackme for awhile because it lacked the ability to show the tracking directly on the mobile but Trackme has come a long way and I am happy to be using this excellent software now.
I also second the motion to have the actual tracking shown on the mobile tracking page, my reason for this would be if you are in a foreign country and you are looking for someplace/or just sight seeing but now you need to get back to the hotel you can just retrace your tracking.

Not sure what's going on, but this app hangs every time I start tracking. I have it set to use a CellID if GPS is not available, and I'm indoors right now so it times out, gets the CellID, converts it to a position and then, right after the "uploading" entry it hangs up. The Windows "working" icon comes up and spins for a second or two, then freezes, and the application becomes unresponsive. I can quit the app using the X or HTC task manager, but something is clearly still running in the background because the phone is very slow afterwards. A soft reset clears things up. Any ideas?
EDIT: So it appears to be related to CellID only. I had it use GPS only and it updated fine. Note that even with the CellID tracking it does appear to send the position if I let it go for a bit, but the program doesn't unfreeze in any reasonable amount of time (I've let it go for ten minutes or so).

Could you send me your config.dat file located on your TrackMe folder?
I will try to do some testing using your settings to see if I can reproduce the error.

New version available!
- Added tracking log for Live Map
There are some restrictions though. It seems that Google Map checks how many requests are made from a single IP address.
In order to generate a path I need to pass in the URL a list of positions. I cannot pass a huge list of positions because the URL size is limited.
On the other hand, it seems that Google tracks how many positions have been passed and after a certain number, it will block you and you won't be able to get more maps.
I had to reset my router a few times because of that.
For those reasons, the maximum number of points in a path that I am passing is 10. I have also increased the interval of updating to 45 seconds.
I had to add those limitations just in case Google decides to ban my site id because of too much traffic.
Let's see how it goes... if everything goes ok, I will be removing some of those limitations.

For those who have there own display server. . . . . .
If anyone is having problems with getting existing trips (i.e. TrackMe crashes)
Try adding this to the top of the php files e.g. requests.php
Rather than having just:
<?php
Change it to:
<?php error_reporting (E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE);
This may fix other stuff too like uploading pics. Add it to all PHP files.
Also for those who are experiencing slow loading of maps it could be due to the number of positions in the trip.
You can halve this by just mapping the odd numbers.
Try adding this to line 1125 in index.php
AND MOD(ID,2)=1
i.e change this:
$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM positions WHERE FK_Users_ID='$ID' AND FK_Trips_ID='$trip' AND DateOccurred BETWEEN '$startday' AND '$endday' ORDER BY DateOccurred");
to this:
$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM positions WHERE FK_Users_ID='$ID' AND FK_Trips_ID='$trip' AND DateOccurred BETWEEN '$startday' AND '$endday' AND MOD(ID,2)=1 ORDER BY DateOccurred");
Now for a question;
Does anyone know how to change the default zoom for Goggle maps?
I want the trip to be loaded at the optimum level. i.e. the maximum zoom where you can still see the whole trip.
Cheers

As far as I know there are not specific incompatible models with TrackMe.
If you have any problems it should be because of the configuration.
Touch screen devices should be easier to handle with TrackMe, but non touch screen Smartphones work as well.
You can use it with PDAs that have an integrated or bluetooth GPS.

This is brilliant - any idea of the amount of data it uploads/downloads when live tracking? Me and a friend are planning a Euro roadtrip next year and I'd like to be able to provide a live feed of where in the alps we are to friends and family, however roaming data charges will more than likely be prohibitively expensive... I'll probably look into local sim cards for the countries we're in, but any idea on the amounts of data...?

Lem,
Not sure when this started happening, but the last few versions I've seen seem to be very likely to "lose connection to GPS" and that's end of story, it stops logging until you manually re-start it with the blue icon on the main TrackMe screen.
Perhaps this is intentional to a degree, but can you re-try to connect to the GPS? I never have a problem actually reconnecting to the GPS, just it seems for whatever reason it loses connection temporarily.
I'll experiment some to see if I can figure out what's causing it, but I think regardless TrackMe attempting to reconnect would be a good thing, perhaps every time interval that it'd take a reading? Or a separate fixed value would be fine, every 15s or something.

Hi khaytsus,
Do you use a bluetooth GPS?
I think the timeout that I specified was 15s. If during that time TrackMe doesn't receive any data from the GPS, it will disconnect.
Yes, I thought about the reconnect thing. I will try to add it soon.

Yep, bluetooth GPS. That'd be cool, not sure why it seems like it's doing this now and it never did before, but I'll look forward to an update in this regard. :) In the meanwhile I'll just keep an eye on it.
