Disconnecting from internet automatically

Is there a way to set the phone to disconnect from the Internet when it is done using Direct Push.. It seems like such a waste for it to be connected all of the time even when you select to disconnect it will just get back on and stay on.. I want it to check the mail and just get offline when it's done...suggestions?

isnt the object of direct push to be online 24/7 for instant emails?

Yeah but does it need to stay connected 24/7? Why can't it just connect get what it needs and log off.. I'm trying to save battery which is the only reason I care. It's not a huge deal
